Fandom Arpeggio of Blue Steel

Jean Otus

Would-Be Prince
By the 2030's mankind had lost a great deal of its terrestrial holdings to global warming and rising sea levels. From this rising sea appeared beings known as The Fog; super powerful warships the likes of which humanity had never seen before, armed with such futuristic weaponry as to reduce even the massed forced of the world to burning wrecks. After the great battle of 2039, humanity was effectively removed from the seas, and any attempt to cross the sea by air or space were immediately destroyed by the Fog. Humanity became isolated again, individual nations tried to act self sufficiently, with tragic results. Europe and mainland Asia fell into a brutal war over the ever shrinking pool of resources available. Only small splinter governments across the world remained to attempt to overcome the Fog. As the years went by, the Fog began to evolve, producing "Mental Models". These models were human bodies created by nano machines, designed to allow the Fog to gain humanity's ability to improvise and change.

After the battle of 2039, a strange thing happened, a Fog submarine, I-401 arrived at the Yokosuka port with all systems locked. For seven years the Japanese government tried to unlock the secrets of the ship, but to no avail. The submarine was eventually awakened by a young student at the Yokosuka Naval Academy, Gunzou Chihaya. Her Mental Model, a young girl named Iona, convinced him to take the submarine from port and use her to fulfill his goals, to fight back against the Fog.

After Chihaya, Iona, and the rest of the crew of the I-401, now called "The Blue Steel" gained fame for fighting agains the fog, a ripple spread throughout the fleets of the Fog. Human crews made a ship stronger, perhaps the secret to strength and happiness, though it went against the Fog's laws, was to seek out and ally with humans. So some ships left their fleets, and sought out partners, captains who they could use to become stronger, to find out who they are, where they came from, where they're going.
