EYES LIT ON SHARP THREATS FROM DARK LIPS.

Burned old buildings, blackened farm lands, even a playground left with the slides blistered and asphalt cracked from pure heat. With seemingly no evidence left behind, people handled their losses and continued on with life.
Then came the blackouts. Escalating from neighborhoods, to city blocks, to the entirety of Los Angeles County being left in the utter dark. People left stumbling in the abyss, fearful of what it could contain, of what could happen to them.
It wasn't until a certain someone found a once derelict church in ruins, almost entirely engulfed into the soft soil below. Amidst the broken glass and the splintered pews was a book. Despite the cover being soft and worn from its old age, the title simply read The Forever Deep. The book was pocketed and taken home out of sheer curiosity, and whoever found it soon suffered the same fate. Their home, collapsed in on itself, and the reader buried deep beneath in an eternal grave.
Curious phenomenons continued around the world, leaving breadcrumbs of what was truly happening. It took a trained eye to realize their meanings.

The paranormal investigator was smarter than most; they were not blind to the truths of the world, no matter how horrible, how gruesome, how harrowing. As these random occurrences arose, they would appear only days after to pick through the pieces and see what could be done. This work could not be done alone, however.
One person from each accident, each fear; victims given the knowledge to see.
They were told of the Entities, or more commonly thought of as the Fears. Sometimes referred to as gods, or powers, or deities, are multiple aspects of an amorphous force of fear that exists next to reality. Their influence upon reality manifests as supernatural happenings - all supernatural phenomena in the world are simply extensions of them. These phenomena can take various forms such as people, animals, monsters, books, objects, or places, all with the goal of evoking fear, terror and paranoia from all who encounter them. These entities do not simply feed off of fear, but are fears made manifest. It is not only human fear that counts, but that of animals as well. The more fearful the world is of a certain thing, the more powerful the related entity becomes, becoming empowered by the increased fear of its realm of influence.
As far as the investigator knew, there were fourteen. And so they got to work, traveling across the country to pluck one individual affected or marked by each of these Fears, their last hope for a fighting chance.
See, these Entities normally do not and cannot exist in the physical world - in order for them to do so, they must "merge with reality" by changing the world to be closer to the essence of the Entity. Servants of the Entities can perform a ritual to accomplish this. If the ritual succeeds, the entire world will be reshaped in a way that reflects the Entity, making the Entity's fear-energy much more plentiful. Rituals require massive amounts of power built up over years, and if the ritual fails, that power is lost and must be rebuilt before another ritual can be attempted.
So far, they knew any ritual attempted by an Entity had failed. However, that did not diminish the investigator's fears of another one happening anytime soon. They were usually violent, disastrous, and resulted in the deaths of many. What better way to fight fire than with fire?

This roleplay will be focused around a paranormal investigator and their ragtag team of folks, mainly survivors who have first hand encountered different Entities or avatars of such fears. As their investigations into a newly planned ritual develops, it seems they will be soon discovering the much bigger picture.

Often manifests as graves, deep water, financial issues, dirt/earth, tight spaces, and caves.THE CORRUPTION. Also known as The Filth, or The Crawling Rot. The fears of corruption, disease, and filth. It manifests as mold, bugs, rot, decay, and infection, and is often linked to feelings of disgust or revulsion. Elements of it also show themes of love and companionship with unhealthy boundaries, where several of its victims find a comfort in its manifestations, growing fond of company others find vile.THE DARK. Also known as The Forever Blind. It is the primal fear of the dark and the unknowns regarding what lurks within it. It, along with The Hunt and The End, is said to be one of the oldest Entities. It often manifests as dark, sticky, or brackish water, as well as coldness and blindness.THE DESOLATION. Also known as The Lightless Flame, and The Devastation. It is the fear of pain, loss and unthinking or cruel destruction. Many of its manifestations include flames, burning, wax, extreme heat, and destroying something before its potential is reached.
THE END. Also known as Death, Terminus, or The Coming End That Waits For All And Cannot Be Ignored. Its sphere of influence includes death and the fear of death, as well as the cruel and unstoppable end of things.THE EYE. Also known as The Beholding, The Ceaseless Watcher, and It Knows You. It is the manifestation of the fear of being watched, exposed, followed, of having secrets known, but also the drive to know and understand, even if your discoveries might destroy you. Many of its manifests appear as eyes, books, libraries, or even security cameras.THE FLESH. Also known as Viscera. It is the fear of mutilation and having your body changed or destroyed as well the animal fear of being slaughtered for meat. It is thought to be the newest of the entities, born from the fear created by the increase in the industrial farming of animals for meat.
THE HUNT. Also known as The Apex Predator. It is one of the most primal powers, the animalistic and instinctual fear of being hunted or chased, of becoming prey. It doesn't affect humans too much due their self-removal from the natural food chain, but still manifests through with an affinity or love for tracking, finding and hunting.THE LONELY. Also known as The Isolation, or The One Alone. It is a manifestation of the fear of isolation, of being completely cut off and alone, the fear of being disconnected. The Lonely often manifests as fog, ships, travel and faceless crowds.THE SLAUGHTER. Also known as The Warmonger. It is the fear of pure, unpredictable, unmotivated violence, with strong ties to war. It is the fear of not knowing where, how or when pain will come but that it will, and can be violent like a frenzied killer or calm, cold and regimented like soldiers firing on the battlefield.THE SPIRAL. Also known as The Twisting Deceit, Es Mentiras, It Is Not What It Is. It is based on the fear of madness, that your world isn’t right, that your mind is lying to you. It deals with deception, lying, distortion, deceiving the mind and senses.THE STRANGER. Also known as I Do Not Know You, The Uncanny. It is the fear of things that are almost human, but not quite, a fear of the unknown and the creeping sense that something isn’t right. It manifests as objects pretending to be humans, like mannequins, wax models and taxidermy, and is often connected to skin, faces, identity, and the uncanny valley.THE VAST. Also known as The Falling Titan. Its domain is our fear of our own insignificance in this universe, of losing yourself in too much space, as well as heights, falling and open spaces. It commonly manifests as void, vertigo, and falling.THE WEB. Also known as The Spider, and The Mother of Puppets. It is the fear of being controlled or trapped without knowing it, and your will not being your own, of being manipulated. It manifests as spiders, webs, web-like patterns and puppets.
- extra infoAVATARSAn Avatar is an individual who gains otherworldly abilities through their connection to an Entity. Becoming a fully-realized avatar requires an active choice on the avatar's part. Dying is a necessary part of the transformation but the death can be either literal or metaphysical in nature. An avatar's powers vary from person to person, and two avatars serving the same Entity will not necessarily have the same powers. An example: an avatar of the Desolation could have pyrokinesis. In order to survive, an avatar must "feed" their Entity, or the Entity will begin to feed on them.ARTIFACTSThere are many objects in the world that are tied to the Entities in one way or another, and as such are referred to as artifacts. More often than not, these artifacts are books, usually listed as owned by a Jurgen Leitner. Whoever the person may be, it seems every book with his name on it has supernatural properties. In general, the books are more powerful than any other supernatural artifacts, though individual books may range from "innocuous" to "unsettling" to "murderous". Leitner refers to them as "the essences of The Entities in a purer form"; they generally only correspond to a single entity. Other artifacts can truly be anything; mirrors, toys, instruments, even coffins.
