Tommasa de Abbrixio
Tommasa swayed gently in seat atop the Riger known as Budgie. The blue and yellow creature seemed to dance upon invisible winds and Tommasa found it oddly meditative to just observe the world around her as it passed by.

Up here the differences between the strange world she had fallen into and her own home were stark. Sparking blue for miles, Budgie’s rider had indicated it was called an Ocean and it was made entirely of water. Her own home was a barren place filled with sand and rock and little water.

Even the Sun, although she did not look upon it directly, was different. Less red and hot than Ignis who ruled over her home. Still up here with the wind whipping around her and with the strange ocean and water all around her she found the differences were more wondrous than frightening.

Much about this new planet was wondrous in truth, not just the overabundance of what on her own planet was a Sacred Gift. The creatures of this world were fascinating, so different to the cavern beasts and hard skeleton creatures of home.

There were the Rigers, like Budgie, large creatures many human lengths long and several grown men tall. They were jewel-toned, like many creatures from home, but had shovel like feet. They had hard pinchered faces, hard domes upon their heads, and rounded fleshy wings. They made lovely singing sounds though and whatever their awkwardness on land they were truly graceful in the air. She had been told they also “swam” or moved in the water as they moved in the air. She had not understood this concept until she had seen the endless expanse of blue. Water on her home was a precious thing and there had been no source she could think of large enough that the Riger might move nimbly through it.

The other creatures she had met had been as strange although also somewhat familiar in their way. They were known as Psirillas & Psikeys ; colored much like the canyons of home in a variation of red with painted stripes or orange. They had what they called fur in those colors, long forearms and shorter legs. The Psikey had a long tail, long nose, and small face. The Psirilla had no tail, long bones protruding from her face, and towered over Tommasa. The Psikey however had come to her waist when standing. The thing that had made them comforting however was their ability to communicate mind to mind, much like the people and the creatures of home. They had what they called telepathy, or mind speech. The Psirilla, Auberon, had also shared the language of this land with Tommasa as well.

Tommasa had been genuinely sad to see them go, along with their human companion Sue. The woman had been her caretaker during her stay at the Ranger Station. As Tommasa understood it the woman along with Auberon and Cheeky, the Psikey, acted as the hostesses for the Ranger Station. The station itself was something like a guard outpost as Tommasa understood it, home to individuals who monitored the powerful storms of this world and the upsurge of the chaotic version of the Collective that came with it. The Rangers themselves were always busy, as befit such important persons, but Sue and the other hostesses were always on hand to see to a guests comfort. They had also explained what they could of the world although Tommasa had understood little without a proper frame of reference.

Still, she understood enough of the Society to feel she would not shame the kind hostess and her little Companions. And she was told she was going to another place to learn more. A hospitality house they had called it, a place run by those who had agreed to shepherd strange Travelers through the new world they had found themselves in. Tommasa had been shocked to discover such a custom in this strange new land. And deeply impressed by it as well. Hospitality was important in her culture but it was usually tied to familial bonds, not simply the good will it took to help those unrelated or unlikely to be related to you.

Apparently this hospitality house was run by kin of the man who sat behind her on Budgie, Robert. He had assured her of his kinfolks trustworthiness and delight in taking her in. She had thought at first it was a strange type of proposal, the man was beardless but definitely marriageable age. She had been deeply embarrassed, even more so when Cheeky had laughed and laughed at her misunderstanding. He had apparently been speaking more than a taking in an orphaned child. Tommasa was many Turns beyond her girlhood however she was sadly familiar with being treated like a child. She found it oddly comforting in its disappointment that even here in this world with so many differences she was like a child who needed carrying for.

The hostesses had tried to assure her this was not the case and that Robert had only been attempting to make her feel less fearful of meeting strangers. But she had understood perhaps better than they what was happening. She had even been grateful, for in this world she was truly like a child. At home she was a child because she could not connect to the Collective and thus risked shaming her bloodline. Here she was a child because she had literally fallen through the sky from another world. If anything it made the feeling of helplessness and anxiety a lot easier to bare.

Her mind drifted further as the flight continued. Sometimes she thought of home, although she usually tried not to dwell on those thoughts long. They did no good and only made her more anxious than she already was. She spared a few unpleasant thoughts about Duccio and his accidental genius. The man had insisted for months that he could teach her to join with the “Outer Collective” and transcend to the Realm of Auras. She was fairly certain this new place was NOT that Realm but she found it amusing that she had indeed apparently connected with an Outer Collective. It was perhaps mean spirited but she found it amusing how right he was when it was likely he had no idea what he was doing and would face dire consequences when her family found her missing.

But even those thoughts could get dark after a time so she focused instead ongoing over the basics she had been told of the world from the Hostesses, turning it into a type of repetitive chant in her head. Like those long ago history classes with her first teachers. In time she even dozed, lulled to sleep by the swaying movement of Budgie and the repetitive thoughts.

♦♦♦

“Brace yourself Miss Abbrixio we’re about to land.”

The voice came from the coverings over her ear jolting her awake. She had fallen asleep and been having pleasant dreams of watching Chimes paint the sky. Looking around groggily she saw that they were indeed rapidly beginning a descent. Budgie was aiming for what she realized was a large blue lake of surrounded by green and brown things she had seen in pictures, Trees they were called. Distantly she thought she saw square clearings filled with animals but it was a little hard to see past the blurring of the wind. She distantly noticed a translucent dome covering her head and blinked when the next moment they hit.

There was a wave of water and then they were underneath it. The translucent dome kept them safe and as they dove deep she got glimpses of creatures swirling out of Budgie’s way. When they resurfaced Tommasa was breathless and gripping her seat. Budgie lumbered onto the shore of the large pool and settled down as if he was exhausted.

“And here we are. Budg, give us a Slide eh? There’s a good boy.”

Robert called out to the exhausted creature. In a moment both of his long fleshy wings were stretched on either side of him and the creature was as flat to the ground as it was possible to be.

“Right I’ll get your hospitality bag for you then I’ll take the slide first. It will give us an anchor string I can use to help you down and then get anything else I need while we stay. “

Robert said with a cheerful grunt. Toma turned around to see him stretching a little. She had no idea what he had just said but she gave him a small smile besides. He was a nice man and had gone to significant trouble to help her.

And sure enough in a short amount of time he had gotten her off Budgie, riding along a rope down the fleshy wing. Budgie twitched a little as she went but not so much she toppled off.

“Sorry about that he doesn’t like doing Slide overmuch. But it’s the easiest way to get off the doesn’t involve going down his tail or just straight climbing down. Anyway you got your bag right?”

Robert double checked as he moved the rope slightly. Budgie gave chirping noise and shook, uprooting the rope and sending it whacking into his side. He gave an even higher chirp at that and seemed to glare down at Robert.

“ Well ’s what you get. You’re gonna have to keep that on until we get back home. Now you behave yourself while I take Miss Abbrixio up to the house.”

Robert said clucking at the creature in affection. He then turned to Tommasa and indicated a path ahead through the tall brown and green things.

“House is up this way we’ll make our way up and I’ll introduce you to the family.”

He said leading the way.

Joan Tomslin
It was a sunny day. The weather just right for many of the Elistriks residing in the sanctuary. Joan was making her routine checks in Quadrant A of the sanctuary. Many of the troublesome Elistriks or those who were abused resided here since they would never survive long out in the wild. Right as she reached the edge of the forest, Joan pulled out one of her many notebooks looking over the checklist that she had today. Her main objective today was to look over the Amphibirch population, especially a few certain individuals. But at the bottom of her checklist was an odd entry. 'Greet Uncle Robert and new guest.' Uncle Robert was a Ranger that Joan greatly admired. Recently Joan and her parents were asked to house a newcomer. Her parents were received all the intel on the guest, while Joan was left in the dark.

This didn't bother Joan since she really didn't care much about visitors. It wasn't that she didn't like people. Joan felt more comfortable around Elistriks, probably since she has something in common with them. It seemed that her parents agreed to open their doors to the visitor since they instructed Joan to be back soon. Which probably meant that Joan would not be able to get through her list today. "Well let's just see how much I can get done." With a decision set in mind Joan quickened her pace to try and accomplish all her objectives of the day.

"6 inches tall. Vegetation on Amphibirch seems to be growing. And I think we're all set," Joan slammed the small notebook, in her hands, shut. A tiny, bright-green amphibious/leaf hybrid stood tall on a branch that met the red-head's height. The Amphibirch appeared to be at ease as Joan began packing away her many journals full of sketches and data on the multiple Elistriks that resided in the sanctuary into her backpack. "Alright little guy. I'll be back in a week to che-" Joan never had the chance to finish her sentence as the Amphibirch in front of her released a sudden croak before jumping away. Joan's blue eyes looked over and saw a flash of green and a new creature was in the Amphibirch's place. But she recognized the Elistrik immediately.

"Toby! What did I tell you about chasing the Amphibirchs?" A canine-appearing Elistrik of green and brown stood in front of the furious girl. His orange eyes looked up to his companion in front of him, the Elistrik's bushy tail wagging softly. Joan had her hands on her hips and her upper torso leaned forward in an attempt to intimidate the Canidous in front of her. But Toby knew Joan all too well and saw through her bluff. With a slight bark he rolled himself onto the ground, revealing his grassy stomach to her. Joan's posture relaxed as she stood up straight. She placed a hand on her face, "Ugh Toby, stop it. Fine you're not a bad boy, okay? Now come on. I have other things to do like..." Her sentence drifted off as she thought about all the other things she needed to do today. Suddenly she remembered the most important of them all, "Crap! We were meeting up with Uncle Robert today."

"Oh so Mom sent you to retrieve me didn't she?" Joan tightened the straps on her backpack as she directed the question to the Canidous. It appeared as though he understood the question since he promptly responded with a bark. "Alright Toby let's go before Mom forces me to watch over the next young trainer session," the red-headed girl took a large step forward before transitioning into a jog. Toby followed after, soon passing Joan so that he could guide her back home through the shortest route.

"I'm here! I'm back!" Joan bursted through the doorway, panting heavily as she placed her arms behind her head. "We told you to be back soon. Robert just landed with our guest. Now go change before they reach the entrance. You look like a mess," Abby Tomslin, Joan's mom, was running around in the kitchen, trying to hurry and add her finishing touches to the meal she had prepared. "Honey you know Joan had responsibilities she needed to take care of," David Tomslin, Joan's dad, entered the kitchen and walked over to Joan, "Here let me take your things so that you can go get ready."

"Thanks Dad," Joan stretched up on her toes to plant a kiss onto his cheek before she walked off towards her room.

It didn't take long for Joan to change her clothes since she didn't worry too much about her style. But much to her surprise she was feeling nervous and self-conscious. The thought of someone new entering into their lives was different. It had been a long time since they have had anybody over that wasn't family. Honestly the last person ever to visit the Tomslins was Jeremy back where they used to live.

Joan sighed as she reminisced about Jeremy. Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a bark. She looked over and saw Toby patiently waiting for her outside her room. "Coming to retrieve me again?" Toby yipped happily upon receiving her attention. He ran in a circle before bolting off. Despite Toby being past his youth time, the Canidous was always full of energy. Especially on sunny days like this where sunlight provided him with a lot of energy. Joan shook her head and laughed at the crazy canine as she walked out of her room.

Tommasa de Abbrixio
As they began their journey to the hospitality house Tommasa found herself amazed at trees they passed. Back home their plants were largely squat things that hid from the sun or grew but briefly with the aid of the Collective. Nothing like these towering winding behemoths that wove in and around one another like tangled hair with bits of green fastened to the edge. The path was a little more familiar, a messy type of dirt that wound beneath the trees.

But she didn’t waste time staring at her feet though when her head was continuously craning to take in the various plant giants around them. There were the tangle hair trees, by far the most common, with some winding rope trees. These look like spun spinnersilk, gray-ish with a winding pattern that ended up with frayed edges also topped in green.

There were trees that appeared to have swallowed animals whole with rounded bobs handing from their tips along with their green bits.

There were even winding brown bits like a corona woven into a woman’s hair. They also had little flowers attached almost like the bitty baubles that made a woman’s hair stand out.

She could have gazed around her for hours in fascination but soon the burning ache in her legs, that had started shortly after they left Budgie, had her limping and slowing to a halt.

“You alright there?”

Robert said. He had been moving ahead of her at a steady clip but her breathing or slowing steps must have altered him that she was no longer keeping pace.

“I - I am fine. Only a little winded.”

She said trying to ignore the pained tightening of her lower thighs and throbbing pain of her feet. She was still growing accustomed to wearing foot coverings for more than the most special of occasions. And the ones she was wearing today where particularly painful to move in.

Robert gave her a somewhat disbelieving look and looked at her feet. She was absentmindedly lifting one of her legs and trying to stretch.

“Yeah I guess I should have warned Sue about the walk up here. She gave you a full flight suit and those boots are not for walking. Well tell ya what why don’t you try taking them off for the walk up to the road and once we get there we can put ‘em back on. “

He said somewhat sheepishly. She hesitated for a moment, not wishing to appear improper to her new hosts. But if they put the coverings back on once they reached the home that shouldn’t be too scandalous. And her feet were hurting so after a moment she nodded and knelt down to remove the coverings from her feet.

“Right now try stretching your legs a bit, sitting so long on Budg can get first timers a little knotted up. After you’ve worked out some of your kinks we’ll finish the walk to the house. I’ll even tell you a bit about the trees and whatever critters decide to come out and investigate us. They mostly know this is a trainer’s path so most of ‘em scatter when they hear us coming’. But we might get a few curious ones up to see what the commotion is about. “

Robert said as she stretched her legs carefully and finally clamored to her feet. She held the foot coverings uncertainty and indicated she was ready to finish the walk.

True to his word Robert told her as much as he could about the trees and creatures they saw on the path. He mostly knew the common names for the trees and the types and names for the animals. He admitted he had never spent much time studying the particular creatures around them as he mostly focused on the kinds of Elistrik that could be found in the Collective fueled storms.

Still even the scant knowledge he could share was truly fascinating to Toma and helped ease her anxiety and distract her from the slight burn remaining in her legs. She did have to stop a few times as her feet were poked but nothing that penetrated deep enough to bleed. She turned down Robert’s offer to carry her as she would prefer to keep to her own feet.

At last they reached the road and Robert had her sit and don the coverings again. They were still equally uncomfortable but he insisted it was better to wear them on the “hot” road. She was a little puzzled by this as the road did not seem particularly hot and indeed was in much better condition than the forest path. She supposed insufficient trees and their falling green bits and the various other things she had stepped on in the woods made it better. This was made of a strange gray stone but not significantly that different from the pathways back home.

The walk to the House was long and her feet ached mightily again by the time they made it. But this time Robert just let her slow their pace or rest. He did say that once they entered the house she should remove the coverings if she wished. Something about it being family policy.

At last they reached the main two buildings. One one side was a large dwelling that almost resembled an indoor market or bathhouse, except for the the angled roof and the large rod rising from one side. On the opposite side of the house there was a smaller square dwelling held from the ground by a woman's length. It had a similar rod rising from one side although this one seemed to also act as an anchor for the dwelling.

As they approached there was a strange sound coming from the house Robert laughed and claimed it came from something called a Canidous. He assured her it was harmless and would likely greet her exuberantly.

The sounds gave way as the door to the home was opened and a man stepped out and smiled a greeting at Robert and Toma.

“There you two are, were about to send Joan off to see if you had gotten lost. Come in Abby has some food ready and Joan is eager to meet our new guest.”

Tomma started to respond only to be startled with a large green thing burst through the doors and knocked her on her rump. She gave a startled yelp and stared into eyes the color of the sun on a red and green face. The creature gave some loud noises and sniffed her curiously.

The man gave a sharp word which the creature ignored and the next thing she knew someone was pulling it back.

"Joan could you pass me some silverware?" The red-hair girl heard her mother's question as soon as she returned to the kitchen/dining room. She didn't verbally answer her mom's request but Joan walked over to where they stored their silverware and grabbed the exact amount of utensils needed. "Here," Joan mumbled as she handed over the utensils. "Thanks dear. Now if you could-" Abby Tomslin never got to finish her sentence since David Tomslin announced the arrival of Robert and the guest. Which was quickly followed by a slight yelp from an unfamiliar voice, but Joan knew immediately what caused for the commotion.

"Toby!" Joan called out as she stomped over to the entryway.

The Canidous was simply curious. He also felt it as his duty to try and test new individuals who take step into the territory of his loved ones. Joan found Toby on top of a girl that appeared close to Joan's age. She sighed and pulled Toby off of her. The bushy canine whined slightly as he was pulled off, wanting to continue sniffing the curious girl. She smelt other-worldly but sensing Joan's anger told him to hold off. With a reluctant bark Toby sat obediently at Joan's side. "Stay," she commanded to the Canidous, whether he listened varied at times. But judging the situation of a new guest he decided to follow her orders this time and stayed sitting in his spot.

Joan returned over to the person Toby had knocked over. She stretched out a hand to the girl, "Here let me help you up. Sorry about Toby. He is a Canidous who still needs to learn some more manners." Her icy, blue eyes shot a mean look over to Toby who simply wagged his tail as if he didn't understand her body language. Joan then returned her attention back to the newcomer, taking the opportunity to gather a first impression of her.

Beautiful. That was the first word that popped into Joan's mind as she noted the colorful hue of purple of the woman's hair, eyebrows, and eyes. It was different compared to the average colors of blonde, orange, brown, or black that colored people on this world. Then also came the sharp look in her violet eyes. Joan could tell that this was someone with much knowledge, of what exactly? Joan would perhaps find out in the future. Lastly Joan noticed her outfit. What was she wearing? Was that a tight jumpsuit?

"Did my aunt, Sue, give you that to wear? Hm seems like something she'd do. Well I'll open up an offer to you. I can lend you some different clothes if you aren't feeling too comfortable in those." Despite not having much contact with individuals Joan spoke with no stutter, as for how she was feeling on the side was a completely different story. In fact she felt nervous and a little antsy on how she should continue on entertaining the new guest.

"Robert! I'm glad to see you," Joan's mom had entered the entryway from the kitchen wrapping her arms around her older brother, "How are you? Oh and this must be our guest. Hello there I am Abby Tomslin, my husband who greeted you is David Tomslin, and the girl in front of you is Joan Tomslin." Joan felt her cheeks turning slightly warm, perhaps showing a tint of pink from her mom introducing her. Introductions were always awkward for Joan, and this one was no exception since she had completely forgotten to even offer a name to the girl in front of her.

Tommasa de Abbrixio
Toma blinked as the green thing was taken back by a young woman with fire opal hair. She seemed somewhat embarrassed by the green Canis misbehavior leading Toma to believe it must be some kind of house beast.

She started to reassure the girl that she was not overly harmed or inconvenienced when the girl mentioned her clothes. She was truthfully not at all found of the flight suit and thought it extremely uncomfortable but she hated to speak ill of her former hostess. The woman had clothed her when she had first arrived in nothing but her jewelry the rest of her clothes ripped away.

She was thankful for the offer of new clothes though. She started to mention that she believed that she had some outfits in the hospitality bag she had been given when an older woman approached. This was certainly the lady of the house. Her appearance closely mirrored Robert and she had about her face a similar look to the fire opal girl. She introduced the family as Abby, David, and Joan.

“It is a pleasure to be welcomed into your home Abby Tomslin. I am known as Tomamasa daughter of Priore and Masina, of House Abbrixio. You may call me Toma.”

Toma said bowing low in a traditional greeting of a honored guest to their hostess. When she rose the others were smiling. The hostess gestured with her hands to welcome her into the house.

“Well it’s lovely to meet you dear. I am just finishing our meal so why don’t you go to the guest room. Joan can bring you some spare clothes to make you a little more comfortable. The room is upstairs and the second door down the hallway.”

Abby said. Robert also reminded her that she could remove her foot coverings which she did with some relief. Her feet throbbed a little when she straightened back up. She thanked Abby again and placed her foot coverings near the others before heading up where Abby indicated. She was fascinated by the stairs, they did not tend to have them in the homes back in the Oasis. The interior was a lot more rigid as well, most of their interiors back home where rounded or moulded in luto.

The room itself though was very similar to what she might see in a guest room back home. A little less open but the same basic configuration. There was a raised pallet, a drawer, an overhead light, and a box which she knew was called a closet.

She placed her hospitality bag on the pallet and worked it open in the same way that Sue had shown her. Inside there were papers in a clear covering that she carefully placed on the drawer where they would not be harmed. She then pulled out the thin boxes that housed her jewelry. She did not have time to put them all back on but she did reach in and pull out her corona. She wanted a little bit of home to show her hosts.
After she had her corona out she looked at at the remaining contents of the bag. There were rolled clothes, some cloth cups attached to straps, and two sandal like coverings. There were also a bag inside that she picked out. There were many bottles inside as well as a brush. She grabbed the brush first and put the rest of the bag on the pallet next to the larger bag. She then picked a soft pink cloth roll and unraveled it. It turned out to be a pre-tied tunic with the smaller underwrap that was this world’s version of the strophion.

She was reaching into her jewelry box to find a fonz to fit the dress when she heard a knock on guest room door. She turned to see Joan at the entrance.

“Hello! I was looking at the hospitality bag Sue gave me. Would this tunic be suitable for dinner?”

She asked the other girl.

Joan Tomslin
Joan backed off a little from the newcomer as she stood up once she had helped her up. The young-appearing woman returned her mom's words with an introduction of her own. Tommasa de Abbrixio. The red-head girl was feeling slightly hesitant as she tried to repeat out her name in her head, but only to find herself constantly butchering it. Fortunately she included a nickname she was comfortable to be addressed by. It was already complicated enough with some of the species names Joan had to deal with but to try and pronounce the name of someone who she was probably going to be hanging out a lot with would have been hard.

Abby Tomslin was quick to open her home to Toma as she told the woman the directions to her room. Joan wasn't quite sure at this point what she was suppose to do; continue to help her mom set up for the meal? Wait patiently for Toma in the living room? Feed Toby? The last question in mind was not a bad one. "Toby, let's get your dinner ready as well," Joan made her way over to a smallish room that contained their washing and drying machines and in one corner items belonging to Toby. Some days the Canidous would eat the kibble that Joan pours into his bowl, other days he refuses. Sometimes Joan wanted if he still craved natural foods.

"Joan?" her father's head had popped around the corner in search of his daughter. Eventually he spotted her in the laundry room, "Hey kiddo would you mind retrieving Toma? Your mom is just about ready for her to join us for our meal." Joan looked over to him and flashed him a thumbs-up, "Roger that father."

As much as Joan may have appeared calm on the surface, she was in fact nervous internally. Her hands were tightly holding onto each other behind her back as she climbed up the stairs to reach Toma's current room. There shouldn't be any reason for Joan to be nervous. It was not like they have never had guests over. Although many were either individuals who were family or helping the sanctuary. They have not had a guest to stay for some years or really ever.

If this had been a situation of an incoming Elestrik, Joan would be completely calm and collected since she understood and knew how to read Elestriks. But this was a person. Well at least an individual who was probably far closer to a human than an Elestrik was.

While this small conflict was churning inside of Joan, she found herself standing at the doorway of Toma's room. The red-head girl watched as the otherworldly woman began to unpack her belongings. Joan stood there for a moment watching until she realized how creepy she must look now. So to grab the girl's attention without startling her, she knocked on the door. Toma was quick to respond, almost as if she was aware she was there, by turning around with a dress in her hand.

The dress was simple but pretty. It certainly complemented Toma well. Joan was ready to speak out a compliment when she heard Toma's question, "Tunic? What tunic? Wait, do you mean the dress?" Joan chuckled for a moment before she answered the woman's question, "Yes the dress should be fine for dinner. Really you are free to wear what you like. Although that dress will look nice on you."
