A Game About Something [Night Vale]

Grey

Dialectical Hermeticist
The title of the Interest Check is familiar to you, as is the voice on the radio narrating your actions, even those you have yet to consider enacting - like the way you're about to offer interest in this roleplay, fingers settling absently on the keyboard, eyeing this post with a blend of wry amusement and mounting unease; much like being approached by a homeless derelict, a worn and desperate smile on his face, a shakiness to his step that makes you wonder how you might best defend yourself.

All he asks is the time, maybe a dollar if you can spare it, and leaves you with a lingering sense of guilt, relief, and irony that will haunt you in an idle moment on the bus days later.

Welcome to Night Vale.

This would be a FATE: Accelerated game about five Concerned Citizens from Night Vale's militia, protecting their neighbours and assisting the Sheriff's Secret Police in combating threats to your beloved little burg.

I'm interested - I've been looking to play a FATE game.

Will it matter if I'm not up-to-date on Nightvale? What kind of detail/activity are you looking for (I can only guarantee about Casual level and once a day posting. Unsure on if that will vary.)

No experience or background really necessary. I even have some pre-made characters in case anyone is stuck.

I do not operate by RPN's detail standards. A post every day or so will do, and if you regularly post over 500 words I will be displeased.

Absolutely groovy~ Then count me down.

Cool. Here's an example character from a different version of this RP, as an aid to anyone interested:

The reanimated head of Shia Labeouf

Raised in Los Angeles by your mother following your parents’ divorce, you have always loved them both and tried to remain close, supporting them financially as you became a child actor and worked you way into Hollywood to star in 2007’s box office hit, Transformers. You’re not too proud to accept work offered, regardless of what it might be, but a stint with terrifying auteur filmmaker Lars Von Trier left you irrevocably traumatized. In an effort to curb the resultant cannibalism and fugue-induced plagiarism, you took up performance art. You’re thoughtful and observant, frequently going the extra mile to get things just right. You handle criticism with patient open-mindedness.

Precisely how you came to be decapitated and in Night Vale is a mystery, but life is a mystery, and you mostly try to enjoy the ride while using these experiences to find and shape yourself into the best person you can be.

You are a member of the Desert Blossom Community Militia, Cell 42. It’s your job to act as Concerned Citizens when trouble rears its head; like dangerous outsiders, unsanctioned ritual stoneworks, and anything else the Sheriff’s Secret police tells you to gloriously throw your life away in slowing down while they line up a shot. This, also, is probably best not contemplated too deeply.

Spend a Fate point to plagiarize any other power in fiction. as long as it doesn’t require a body.

You certainly know how to make a proposition I cannot resist.

I'll have to learn the system, but I'm totally down!

I know nothing about FATE and little about Nightvale, but it looks like everything I've been searching for. I'll listen a few hours of anything Nightvale you recommend and read any FATE books I can get my hands on.

I'll probably need to take a pre-made character, though, unless I get a REALLY great grasp of FATE.

Have a listen to the first five episodes over on YouTube. I think the show was best in the first year or two so it'll resemble that era more.

FATE you can just download for whatever price you like but it's pretty simple.

Once I've got a few confirmed players and character concepts, I'll explain how FATE works. So tell me who you might want to play and we'll go from there.

I found FATE 2.0 for free in pdf form and I've got Nightvale running in the background while I read.

You're gonna want FATE Accelerated in this case. Trimmed down version, also free.

I'm not sure if I want to run with the metaphysical manifestation of the color orange or one of those gray aliens named Hugh Mann working as a Pineapple Fabricator.

Isaac Sims Sims

Originally from San El Diepasoquerque, Isaac Sims Sims is the son of a wealthy oil baron expelled from home due to a strange, but intriguing mental quirk. Isaac Sims Sims believes that everyone and everything actually exists in some kind of computer simulation game. He cites large green crystals as the means of power for this machine that saps control and free will from all the worlds inhabitants.

Even so, none cared much, Isaac included. After a past including several isolated incidents of drunkenness (more than one of them not involving a smartphone) he rode out on his faithful steed, Platinum.

After that, Isaac Sims Sims remembered little of what happened, but sure enough he rode dehydrated and hungry into a little town called Nightvale with nothing but his trusty revolver, leather hat, and the clothes on his back. Isaac isn't exactly sure how he rode into town without his horse, but those are the times he now lives in.

I think I'll be holing out for a pre-made character. Or I'd at least like to look at them to get a 'feel' for what I should be aiming for in creation.

Intern Priscilla would like you to know she is SO excited to be here, like OMG! Intern Priscilla would like you to know that she has dreamed of pioneering the field of community radio since she was a little girl. Intern Priscilla would like you to know how disappointed she was when she realized that community radio was actually already a thing and she would have to settle for destro- er, dedicating her life to bettering it.

So. Disappointed.

Intern Priscilla would also like you to know that she has a dog that she loves to walk and play with all around town! Except the dog park, of course. Intern Priscilla would like you to know the dog is a total stud magnet and she has attracted the likes of Carson Porter, the dreamy hunk that graduated last year and is currently majoring in Hipster Studies at the university, with her dog. Intern Priscilla would like you to know that sometimes, her dog gets really sad, and it just cries in the corner for no real reason and tells her how scared it is of everything... of life. Of the universe. Of a planet lit by no sun. Intern Priscilla would like you to know that, oh yeah, her dog talks!

Intern Priscilla would like you to know that her dog is not actually real, which is probably why it gets so depressed sometimes.

Intern Priscilla realizes she has gotten off track. Intern Priscilla would like you to know that she also has a snowglobe collection, three pairs of socks, a poor sense of direction, and rage.

So much rage.

Intern Priscilla would like you to know that she's a perfectly normal seventeen-year-old girl, honest! Intern Priscilla would like you to know that she has no plans of sabotaging Cecil's radio equipment, coffeemaker, or vocal chords. Really. Also, Intern Priscilla would like you to know that if you have any ideas on how Station Management might best be killed, it would be awesome if you emailed them to her. For research purposes, that's all.

Intern Priscilla would like you to know that she likes to eat dirt - but then, who doesn't? Dirt is an integral part of a healthy breakfast. Everyone knows that. Even Mayor Cardinal eats dirt. Intern Priscilla would like you to know that.

This has been a word from our sponsors.

@Anomaly - for half a paragraph I thought Intern Priscilla was a doppleganger from a... more sunny town than Nightvale. Which is... actually not a bad idea.

She's still being developed, so anything is possible.

I'm just starting the series (only made it to probably episode 3 last time? I got quite busy), but I could very well be interested. Not very familiar with the system, though I think the Core version is in my downloads folder somewhere.

I'll be trying to keep up here - exams are on top of me right now.

If you'd like to have me, I'd like to play~
