Fantasy A Forest Between Us

It was funny to wake up to the same sound this morning, like all other mornings before, to the sounds of the singing birds outside in the garden. Nicolai had slept fitfully, and he lay in bed staring up at his four-poster for a long while before turning to his side and staring out the window. It was cold. The fire in his room had gone out hours ago. Everyone in the castle was in mourning. Truth be told, it still didn't seem like it was even real. One moment his father was sitting jovially at the head of the table, holding meetings, and sitting atop his throne like always. Things that Nicolai was used to. And now? Now his father was dead.

Supposedly it was just a hunting trip, but things had gone horribly wrong when they ran into a group of highwaymen in the forest. His father had always taken one or two of his most trusted guards with him, regardless of safety issues the council always brought up. It wasn't safe for a king to be on his own away from his castle, not in this day and age. Rumors spread around the castle like wildfire–rumors that he had been set up. That there was a spy among the staff, and that the highwaymen were paid off.

But they were only rumors. And Nicolai preferred to think of his staff as innocent until proven guilty. He had grown up with them, after all. And he knew most of them as well as his own parents. They were like a large family. And now, he would be taken from his family and brought to another castle. One he was quite familiar with because his one friend lived there. He didn't have many, his kingdom was small and they were isolated here. Still, the prospect of leaving made him anxious. He would be the king once he came of age, and it wasn't exactly something that he had ever really wanted. Regardless of the unease in his heart, he forced himself to get up and dress quickly.

Several moments had passed, and yet Dain's eyes were still distant as he stared at the castle walls. It had been several years since he'd seen the family coming to visit. Their kingdom wasn't as noteworthy as some of the others, and as such they'd easily accepted being absorbed into the mass of other allies of his own kingdom. This meant that they hadn't needed to visit as often, or at all, really. Now, however, they had a reason to visit. But it wasn't a pleasant one.

Dain's attention was finally pulled away from the walls by a shout from down the hall, informing him that he was to be ready. He quickly threw his bag together, fastening his quiver and arming his bow, as his own mother, the sole ruler of the castle, had informed him to. Apparently, they'd be on a higher alert now, and he'd been told to be armed. Well, he'd been told to be armed with a sword, but he was shit with a sword.

When he arrived at the kingdom's gate, he saw people of all types fussing about, but no sign of the other kingdom's arrival. He took a seat at one of the many chairs littered around, surveying the crowd.
