XORA
A city that has gone through centuries of technological advancement, Xora has become one of Earth's capital cities. Due to the collapse of government in most countries, all regions on Earth have lost its home rule. The fall of many cities across the world spawned the creation of megacities such as Xora. However, along with the lack of a governing body comes with the absence of the police force that enforces safety and law. Instead, most crime is handled by the community as a whole. However, some felons aren't caught if they go unnoticed. Cautious murderers and thieves thrive in Xora. Unfortunately for them, if they mess with the wrong people, they end up angering those who would go to great lengths to find revenge.

A string of perverse murders have popped up over Xora's city district, Bayside Cross (B.C.), which have prompted an investigation by vigilantes and detectives, amateurs and professionals alike.

Light peeked past the unruly blinds, gradually invading every crevice of his small, disastrous bedroom. In front of him was the LED screen that kept his eyes glued to it, fingers tapping relentlessly against the keyboard whose letters were eroding due to the rate of which he was typing. It had been days since he'd had any sort of excitement in his life, being a hacker just didn't have its thrills anymore. He went from foolish, meaningless intrusions to endless bouts of nothingness.

His fingers tapped against the keyboard quickly, signing into every media surface he had: Reddit, old game accounts, etc. With every click, he was redirected to several different forums and other people's accounts that he had gained info from. In every corner of every website, the tragic happenings kept resurfacing. In Xora, there had been many murders, gruesome enough to make Hannibal Lecter look like a damned Care Bear. Eventually, his browser was lined with articles about the killings, the news even got to the X.C.O.

The hacker sat there, elbows rested on his desk surface as he read onward and scrolled through the forums, trying to dodge everything that was related to what was going on in the city he resided in. Gore, kitten videos, he tried everything but every time he would continue to dig through deeper details of the merciless killings.

"It's already seven? Jesus," Reggie mumbled under his mask before covering his computer's webcam and sliding off his studded cover. A groan left his parched lips as he stood from the comforts of his cushioned desk chair. "Hey, Reggie Jr. Mind handin' me a slice of pizza? Kinda hungry over here." Within minutes, his robotic companion rolled in, a slice of cold pizza hanging limp in its robotic appendage. "Uh. Thanks?"

"Anything new on the murders? Give me somethin' juicy, Tri," Reggie spoke into the mic of his mask. "Like maybe a new murder? An update? Anything?" There was silence over the line, accompanied by the light tapping of the other hacker. And with a groan, Reggie knew exactly what they were gonna say.

"Nada. Listen, I'll call you some other time. Didn't know you were into this stuff."

"It's fucked up. And anything fucked up is interesting. Thanks, though, Tri," the hacker hung up and continued to scroll until a request caught his eye. It was a post, seeking help in an investigation that circulated the gruesome string of slayings

"The number you have dialed is not in service..."

The young girl puts the phone back on its stand, groaning as she does so. It was only a month after her close, and only, friend had passed, yet the phone company that held the number had already terminated her contract. In business, it was practical, yet it felt torturous and unfair to Gaela. She regretted not saving any recordings of her friend's voice, deleting all the spams of selfies her friend took. It was as if all trace of Dierdre was gone from the living. Now, without the soothing voice that is Dierdre, Gaela turned to listening to her voicemail over and over again. Of course, that too would be taken from her. Tears threatened to fall off her face, and so Gaela moved from her spot to her laptop, hoping to find something that would remind her that, perhaps, Dierdre's love for her was still present on social media.

After several minutes of searching, it was to Gaela's dismay to find that even D's accounts were wiped. Frustrated, Gaela lays down on her couch, rubbing the headache away. Turning her head to look at the time on her laptop, she sighed once more once she realized it would be about 30 minutes until she had to leave for class. Getting up, she dragged herself to get ready and approach the day with a less gloomier outlook. Perhaps school would clear her mind of her lost love.

It was almost an hour after class started when rumors about a new murder spread throughout the students. It made her blood boil, but she tried to pay no attention to it. Death only reminded her of Dierdre. However, the more her classmates described the crimes, the more Gaela realized that it was exactly how Dierdre was found. Instead of all the blood in her body boiling, all she felt was a cold chill. Pulling out her laptop, she slyly searches throughout numerous forums for a way to exact revenge. She knew of amateur detectives who were interested in this type of stuff, so after finding a suitable website, she posted details on the situation and awaited a response.

I love you.

She exited the classroom, holding her textbook close to her chest. University constantly stressed her out, but she continued to work hard to achieve her dream of being a veterinarian. As she fantasized her future, she didn't realize until she looked down at her phone, which was lying on the textbook, that she had received an email about the investigation. Startled, she stopped walking to check on the notification, eyes glimmering as she grinned.
