Seoul Uni

School for the gifted.

A large domain where a building was standing on could be seen at the outer edge of Seoul, South-Korea. It had been abandoned for many years until they decided to create a school from it. Only twenty years old, it had built itself a steady reputation of prestige. Only those that received an invite from the school itself could enter the grounds. If there were outsiders to be found, they were removed accordingly by the highly trained security. Unlike what many people thought, it wasn’t a school for solely the rich but for people with several backgrounds who got inside by only one thing: talent. Be it scientifically, artistically, etc. If they saw potential they would send an invite.

The youngest students were at the age of 19, there wasn’t a maximum age as even those who were in their forties could be invited to go to the school if they wanted. Mostly those that lived alone, took on the challenge. The entrance fees could be paid in instalments, the student could choose themselves how much they wanted to give each month. They were also allowed to have part-time jobs as they looked at the realistic side as well.

However, there was a dark secret lingering around the school. Mainly involving the students of the special classes as they were held separately, at max only 20 students at each lesson period unlike others. Unknown to the majority of the students, these handful of people weren’t human. They were vampires. They went to this school in order to learn as much as possible about living in a human society without pulling too much attention to themselves.

Now it’s the school’s 20th Birthday and for this event, more invites had been send to those who were deemed as ‘interesting’. Welcome to Seoul Uni, the school for the gifted.

First day of school, 21st August 2017. The sun was shining, almost no cloud to be seen in the sky. A radiating brilliance which pleased the civilians on Earth. Well, most of them were. Seoul Uni was a prestigious school, one that couldn’t be compared to low grade universities as they offered much more and those who graduated had a 98 percent chance of finding a job within three months. Some even got an offer from companies themselves which they could join. Mostly after they had gone as interns, the employers would see the potential of the student and make an offer by the time they would no longer be in this university. Some students decided to just keep on studying for as long as they could, having several masteries upon their sleeve, only getting a job in their mid-thirties. It wasn’t for everyone but it certainly was a possibility that shouldn’t be overlooked so easily.

There were several signs placed in the form of an arrow to show the new students where they had to go. After all, the university was a pretty big place so at the first day everyone got a map, even the older students in case they lost it. The principal of the university however was a mystery as nobody had seen him before except from hearing his voice through the speakers hanging in the hallways of the buildings. It was quite interesting yet nobody felt like discovering him as they had their priorities on something else. For some it was graduating, others wanted to have the best times of their lives, then there were those who just wanted to learn something, etc. The school had all kinds of different people in it which made it have its own personal touch.

Yawning deeply as mornings weren’t particularly her thing, Hyebin made her way to the university. Driving her car towards there as her house was just way too far away to go by public transport. Hence the reason why she always packed 3/4th of her whole wardrobe so she didn’t need to go back and forth all the time. Only going home on special holidays such as Christmas but besides that, she preferred to just stay in the dormitories. Once she arrived she quickly looked for a nice parking spot which was near the main gate but not in the domain itself as no cars and such things were allowed inside. Unless a delivery van had to pass through but they were one of the few exceptions. Locking the car completely, stuffing the keys in the pocket of her black ripped jeans. Her white blouse hung loose around her body, her feet were secured in combat boots with a small heel.

Being in her 3rd grade now, she didn’t feel the same excitement anymore as she did in her freshman year. Everything was new and interesting, now it was only some kind of routine to get to this school and live her daily life. It was actually quite reassuring by how it went, it even made her feel more at home than when she was with her family. Odd but true. Her parents still wanted her to take over their company but as stubborn as she was, she refused and kept studying medicine. The only thing that she still needed to work on was her self-control at the sight and scent of blood. It was crazy to think that a vampire even wanted to become a doctor in the first place but she had always been interested in the job. A childhood dream was it called.

She adjusted her leather backpack and made her way to the central square. There wasn’t exactly a speech going on from the principal as he hadn’t even shown himself since the moment he started working here. The only time when there would be a speech it was in cases of emergency which was a really rare thing and even then, it was done by one of the teachers who had more authority. She squinted her eyes as she made her way to the kiosk, relaxing once she was in the shade again. It felt a lot better already instead of walking in the blazing sun and she was still outside. It was a win-win situation for her. Plopping down on one of the two benches that were in it, placing her bag next to her feet so she could keep an eye on it. Taking out her cell phone to check if she received any messages from someone in the special classes that she had to take with a few others. They were mandatory but wouldn’t be punished if they didn’t go once in a while but if one took advantage of this, it would turn out badly for them. Luckily, nothing was posted for the students which meant they didn’t necessarily have a special class today.

Of course Baekhee had to work the early morning shift on her first day of school. For the past week she had been asking her boss if she could swap shifts with someone but he still refused and so Baekhee just had to suck it up and serve customers with a smile at 6am.

Working in the morning wasn’t that bad, it was generally quite and nobody had any fancy orders to make a small everyone just wanted straight coffee to give them a kick start in the morning. The only part Baekhee hated about working the morning shift was the delivery. Every morning like clockwork the same green truck would pull up outside the coffee shop and unload 10 large bags of coffee beans. In the contract with the supplier it says that’s they are supposed to help bring in the bags into the stockroom but they always just leave them on the road. Baekhee walked outside and pulled the first bag into her back, she felt like an old lady going to market. 10 bags later and Baekhee had a light sheen of sweat over her forehead but she didn’t have time for a break as more customers needed serving.

8am finally rolled around and Baekhee had finished her shift but she was already exhausted. “Baekhee~ah. Isn’t it your first day back at Seoul Uni today?” One of her colleagues asked as Baekhee nodded. “Wow, you must be so smart to get into that school.” She spoke but the modest Baekhee just shook her head “Anyway good luck today!” Her colleague says as Baekhee just nods as she begins to change out of her uniform into the outfit she prepared for school.

10 minutes later Baekhee was ready. She wore a light pink overall dress with a white blouse underneath, on her feet she wore a matching pair of pink loafer shoes with a pair of frilly socks. To some it may look like a childish style but Baekhee felt her most confident when wearing clothes like this. Still that wasn’t that confident still.

She left her work place and took the subway to school as it’s was the quickest and least expensive way to travel to school. Baekhee got off at the Seoul Uni stop as she headed up the large set of stairs into the warm sunlight. “Such a nice day.” Baekhee said to herself as she followed the other stream of students up to Seoul Uni.

You could tell from a single glance which were returning students and which were new students. New students had this look of excitement and fleek in their eyes while returning students looked extremely worn down from the extremely harsh curriculum. Everyone tries to get a head start but without a professor the content it very hard to make sense of. Even for Baekhee.

This year all of Baekhee’s classes had shifted from the main buildings to one of the smaller buildings. To make sure that she wouldn’t miss any class time Baekhee picked up a map of the school as she walked in through the front gate. Baekhee walked as she opened the map trying to figure out where she was and how she could get to the smaller building. In order to concentrate Baekhee walked over to some benches underneath a kiosk and sat looking at the map. Finally at her whitts end with the stupid map Baekhee turned to the person next to her. “Excuse me, Do you know how to get to this building?” Baekhee asked the stunningly beautiful lady sat next to her as she pointed at the building on the map.

Shey was sighing as he held a book in his hand and tried to find where it was supposed to be placed. He was getting a bit annoyed at the disorganized system his friend used to sort the books into the shelves of his bookstore. Nothing was where a sane person would think it should be.
"Seriously Jin I am giving up! Here you have the book and put it where you want to. This system of yours is so illogical it's giving me a headache" he said and handed his friend the book before he sighed again, it seemed like he was doing that a lot today.

"Shey your joking right? You worked here long enough to know where the books go, let me guess, something else is on your mind and you're pretending that its the books so you don't have to talk about it" Jin said and crossed his arms over his chest before giving Shey a knowing look that made him feel a bit uncomfortable. His friend seemed to know him too well by now and it unsettled Shey a bit. Instead of answering he walked up to the box by the counter and took the next stack of books he needed to sort into the shelves.

Of course, his friend wouldn't give up that easily and followed him around until Shey couldn't stand it any longer "would you stop it? You're driving me crazy! It's nothing for you to worry about okay? There is no big problem behind my mood, nothing to pick apart and solve, its just me being a bit nervous about school and my hunger acting up, nothing more" he said without realizing he had just spilled his guts in his frustration over Jin's behavior. Jin chuckled and shook his head before taking the rest of the books out of Shey's hand "look my friend, that's something we can solve in no time. Go to school and get something in the cafeteria, it's not like I cant put these into the shelves myself" Jin said holding up the books for a second before starting to do the work Shey had been doing so far.

While usually, he would have complained, he had to admit it was a better idea to just got. He would have to eventually and if he would be there a bit sooner he would at least have enough time to find the cafeteria, go to his room and maybe go for a walk around the uni to see where everything was located. He nodded at his friend and went to grab his backpack "okay then, but next time don't complain about me leaving early today, it was your idea" he said and secretly smiled a little before heading for the door "have fun at the uni and for crying out loud don't be so icy to people or you will never meet anyone" said Jin and Shey felt tempted to throw something in his direction but instead grunted a goodbye and left the bookstore. There was no point in commenting about it since Jin was kind of right, not that Shey wanted to meet anyone of course, but he could try to be a bit less distant, at least to others of his kind.

He went to his car, which was parked a bit further from the shop and started driving towards the uni. He was a bit nervous but distracted himself by turning on some music.
As he arrived he could see a few people walking by and towards the school and sighed. He just hoped that he wouldn't smell any blood along the way, in his current state it could cause him trouble. Grabbing his things he stepped out of the car and locked it before waking the short distance to the uni and decided to stop by the kiosk to buy some chocolate for later.

The sun was shining overhead, pure white on a blue canvas. Despite the passing of summer it has still not lost its touch, laying its warm fingers on everything within reach. The young woman, who was starting to regret her choice of dress as the fabric began sticking to her skin, lazily fanned herself with a small map handed to her by a passing figure as she walked across the campus. With the other hand she tucked a tousled piece of her outgrown bangs back behind her left ear, regretting her decision to wear her hair down. She didn’t need the map, she had learnt it by heart during her first year at the university, but she had taken it anyway in her absent-mindedness. She wasn’t looking forward to the start of a new term. Being back in the classrooms, hidden away from the lingering summer air, listening to the monotone buzzing of her professors… Kang Sora tilted her head back, facing the sun with a sigh and closed eyes, reminiscent about the season that had just ended.

She stayed like that until the felt the hard push of a broad shoulder colliding with hers. Her eyes instantly opened, staring into the back of the culprit who was now in front of her. He didn’t stop to apologise, not even sparing her a glance as he strode forward. Rude. Sora scoffed but simply followed the student, now closing in on the main building.

She had reached the staircase leading up to the entrance, and she climbed it with ease, avoiding the small groups of people who sat on the steps, few and far between. Seeing them sitting two and two, laughing and gossiping, sharing stories and food, made her feel somewhat lonely. She had no friends eagerly awaiting her arrival, no, the only thing that awaited her were the worn out books in the library. But she didn’t mind, she wasn’t here for herself. She was here for her parents. It was her way of repaying them, really. For all they had done for her, for all they had sacrificed. She knew she should feel grateful, and she did in a way, but it was the feeling of being indebted that made her bow her head down and stubbornly pursue the dream that wasn’t hers.

Now at the top of the staircase, she entered the building, leaving the sun behind. Once inside she was met with cool air, a welcome change. Park Sora stopped in her tracks. She realised that she had been walking without an aim, as she couldn’t remember where her first lesson would be. Out of her right pocket she hauled out her phone, opening the schedule application to see where her curriculum would lead her.
