I have a head canon for Dragon and Luffy’s mom and the mystery behind her. His mom was a celestial dragon so the relationship with Dragon and her is likely taboo she went to great lengths to get with Dragon. The Celestials look down on others outside of their ‘race’ they wear those suits and bubble helms as they don’t want to be caught breathing the same air as normal civilians. I have a belief they are superior they want to keep it in their ‘race’ among their other hedonistic beliefs. His mom was promised to her male cousin who is older than she is it’s an arranged marriage by force. At the point and time she met and fell in love with Dragon. Being of the Celestials who don’t share the belief that she’s above anyone she denounces she’s a Celestial. She chose to marry dragon.
With the help of Dragon and bribing a guard she escapes Marie Jois to live a quiet life with Dragon. It’s difficult as she’s used to having servants waiting on her hand and foot she refuses to be like the other Celestials anymore adapting to her new life with her husband. Eventually she’s pregnant and gives birth to Luffy. Tragically while Dragon was on a mission as he was marine there was a plot to assassinate Luffy’s mom and I have a head canon Luffy was just three months old back then. CP9 ( I like to think the original CP9 existed long before Rob Lucci, Kaku, Kalifa, Blueno, and Kumadori joined) Using her the last of her life force she unconsciously kills the CP9 agents and the gunmen in clandestine suits with her haki. She falls down to her knees and dies holding Luffy’s crib. It feels like she unlocked haki with her maternal instincts.
