Age range would be from around 16-19, depending on when their mana is fulfilled. That’s the age most are finally trained in magic but our dear orphans don’t have any of those so. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As for the academy not yet, their first day of arrival the very first thing they do is face the Chromin and discover the magic archetype.

One thing I wasn’t super descriptive about (my bad) is the time period the persecution of Sorcert was occurring. There was a space of many years, say enough to span most of our characters childhood with their parents, where sorcerers were simply not allowed to use their magic. They also were often denied methods of work or support, so it forced them into states of great need. Winter would be especially harsh.
As for the literal time period, I’m thinking a manipulated medieval era that’s kinda clashed with a tad bit of steampunk in that it’s highly advanced when compared to the real thing. Simple machines, advanced clothing or society, the whole shabang.
Anyways if you have any questions about this feel free to go ahead and ask, I know I’m a confusing dude at times.
(EDIT: Another thing to note about mana is that a characters coming of age as no correlation with their magic ability! If their a later sprouted they can still grow to be a very powerful sorcerer!)

Everything looks good, BUT I’d prefer if we’d keep the Assassins Creed III outfit out of it. Also the stats aren’t necessary and won’t be important for the roleplay. They’re cool though!
