Advice/Help Invisable

Rareraven

I like to rp fandoms.
Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? I have a thread listing fandoms and yet I can't get anyone to rp with me.

Uhm... You did get a good number of replies, right away too, and some as recent as yesterday. Credit where it's due of course, it's not exactly complete, but the thread does have a lot of the basic information needed to start a roleplay (even if not all of it) and the fandoms are general enough that I would see them being taken.

So the only conclusion I can come to is that people are contacting you for RP but either some new information you only tell people after they contact you is turning them away or you yourself are rejecting to roleplay with all the people who have so far posted in your thread (so far being for the past 10 days).

Still if it's more partners you want, I recommend giving your interest check a bit of flavor. It's too to the point right now, I've told people this before, many times, but you need to sell yourself through your interest check, your interest check is most people's first point of contact with you and your preferences and your goal is to convince them you're worth being the one they roleplay with over all the other options. Right now, your interest check feels more like a grocery list.

Laifan Laifan since you said you had the same problem I also took a look at your interest check. If you're having trouble finding partners, I wouldn't say those are in your interest check at least. It's just that what you want to roleplay and how you want to roleplay it, is in a very narrow slope, and since 90% of users never look at any given thread, narrowing things down as specifically as you did, by choosing to roleplay essentially only via PM and by having specific cannon characters, and only roleplay against cannon characters, can make it a lot harder to find RP partners. Still, far from me to suggest you can't or shouldn't have your preferences, so all I can say is patience and good luck!

Hey, thanks for taking your time to give advice! Yeah I had the feel my problem might be being too specific in my search. I guess I can only be patient and wait. Thanks again!

So a bit of a background. I've done one year of web design and now i am in my last year of game development/artist studies. In both studies i've learned a lot about marketind and it taught me a lot when it comes to making noticable forum threads as well. So let's break down some of the main point I use to get what i want from my posts.

1. Attention!

You need to grab someone's attention. You have 1 second to get interest, 5 seconds to make someone find what they look for. If you don't meet those requirements it might as well not exist.

So let me explain that for a moment. Someone has to in the first second be willing to read your post. Just one big blob of text or too little text may instantly turn someone away. So look at the visuals. Use white lines, headers and titles and clearly chop up your parts.
Then you have five seconds to make someone find what they look for. If they want clear plots they need to find that in a 5 seconds, if they want fantasy they need to spot that word in 5 seconds again. So make sure you use propper titles! Also a nice layout with lists or short lines is a lot easier to read.

2. balance

Many people will find it hard to find the right balance in their text. Don't make too long of a story. Instead go through a checklist and don't add anything more or anything less. Too little and people will think you dont put effort in your writing. Too much and people are unwilling to read the whole bookwork.

3. the checklist

Make sure you add all the points in someone needs to know and make it clearly visible.
These points are always the W's. Who, why, where, what.
Who are you?
Why are you looking for this thing.
Where should they message you to find this?
What is it that you want and you can offer to them.

4. titles!

Make sure your title gives just a little bit of interest to it and it will attract the right people.

So here i will add in some links of some good and bad posts with reasons why added.
DISCLAIMER: I dont mean to say anything bad about these posts except constructive criticism. Do not take this as an attack as it's never meant as such!

Post 1 Great post, well made.
Good:
- check list with requirements, easy to read.
- good use of headers and spoilers, makes it comfortable and nor overwhelming.
- links to some characters, also nice.
Could be better:
- Sometimes a bit long to read, but it attracts the right people as well.

Post 2 Meh... bit overdone.
Good:

- Clear rules at the top, great!
- well explained
- pairings at the bottom are always nice and leave chance to a lot of freedom
Could be better:
- soooo much text. it's too much, they should have used spoilers.
- the titles aren't all that clearly formatted.

Post 3 Not great, but not bad either
Good:

- clear on what they want
- nice intoduction, not too complex, easy to read.
- the actual text is very pleasant to read and doesn't feel long
Could be better:
- the lay out is so boring, there is no interest and the lines feel really long until you start reading. I really think their clarity towards what they want makes this post.

I hope this can give you some help to what you could do better perhaps. Have a great day and i wish you to best of luck in finding a great roleplay!

I know this is probably meant to the original poster but hey thanks for giving examples of good posts! I think mine is missing a nifty cover image to draw attention (I'll have to look for a good one).

No problem! it's meant for anyone that can use it. I'm glad you like it!

Everyone else has given great advice on spicing up your interest check so I thought I’d give you some advice on searching

I am someone who works hard to find partners the second my current roleplays go on hiatus.

The first thing I do is put my ideas out there. I will contact people with similar interests on their own interest checks or message them about ideas I like.

I can usually find at least four or so interested parties through just putting myself out there and approaching others rather than waiting for them to come to me.

Yes, as rae2nerdy rae2nerdy stated, you can also try approaching other people through their interest check threads if you find something that coincides with your interests.
Having fancy partner search thread is great, but you can wait for people come to you forever, especially if you're looking for very specific or rare things.

I found my best rp partners just by looking through their threads and PMing them if I saw something interesting in their threads, even if it didn't 100% corresponded to what I would look for if I posted a thread of my own. I don't even have a search thread... but I have a few rp partners despite my rare fandoms. Magic? No, power of contacting people! ^^

Yes, sometimes it won't work out, people you contact may refuse rp or not be interested, but that's normal. Either way you need to be patient and keep looking, maybe broad your search thread a bit, unless you really want to rp something very specific, and there is nothing wrong with that if you do, just need to be prepared that looking for partners may take longer.

Having a neat search thread is handy anyway because you can always refer people to it when you contact them to show more info about your rp rules and ideas.
