Agreed, if a fight were to happen, they would have to start it, because Russia was a wasteland before the nuclear apocolypss.

Just because Napoleon and Hitler didn't know to pack winter clothes when they invaded Russia doesn't mean that it was a prewar wasteland. Plus the Soviets and Tsars practiced scorched earth policies and logistics was difficult.
