Sector Hub

Well, the first post got me grinning, The first paragraph threw me off somewhat and the last paragraph at the end I felt snarky.

*hearty laughter* *embarrassed* Oh, I feel flattered!. As long as Shireling doesn't smile.

Feeling the need to criticize? Go right ahead, sure it was a wee bit pompous and arrogant but hey.
When it comes down to it shits not far off.

Whats that? You want another tease? Mkay boi.

The air crackled like the Fourth of July, gunfire everywhere. Her feet stomped against the scorched ground, littered in shattered concrete, spent shell casings, and the occasional corpse. Half the squad with them was dead, and everyone was running low on batteries. Her weapons had gone dead once already and overheated twice. They wouldn’t hold out much longer. Worrying about her weapons, she failed to notice the latest body on the battlefield as her foot caught it right in the thigh, stiffened by rigor mortis, and she nearly ate a mouthful of ash & brass. “C’mon, get up!” her sister Kate tugged at her shoulder, helping her to her feet. Their evac shuttle wasn’t much farther but enemies were getting closer and cover was getting sparser. No sooner was she back up than the shooting started. Metal slugs shot past them, each with a resounding crack. The remaining soldiers with her sent back hot bolts of plasma and screamed for her to get moving. Kate was already ahead of her, but had stopped to let her catch up. She broke into a sprint to close the gap, but the incoming tungsten rounds were faster. Her sister must have seen it coming just a second before, because her eyes had gone wide and she was yelling. “Kris!!” She felt a sharp pain catch her right through her back, and then woke up with a start, clutching at her chest.

She was covered in sweat and had managed to rip the sheet off the bed entirely. It took her a moment to stop hyperventilating and regain control of herself. Her thumb impulsively rubbed at the scar the slug had left, but that hadn’t been the only permanent damage it did. She slid herself to the edge of the bed, setting her feet down gently. Her balance was never great right after she got up. She got to her feet slowly and took a few steps towards the door. Maybe a cold drink of water would calm her mind. She made her way towards the kitchen and was promptly distracted by her sister awake with a field stripped pistol on the coffee table. One of Kate’s tells was excessive, impulsive weapon cleaning. “Couldn’t sleep?” she asked.

Kate shook her head. “And you had the nightmares again didn’t you…”

Kris nodded her head with grim acceptance as she toppled over sideways onto the opposite sofa. She stretched out her arms to get herself comfortable and let out a hefty sigh. The weight of the life she lived wasn’t always easy to carry. “How do you deal?” she poked.

“Technically you’re the one who runs the nation,” Kate answered unhelpfully.

“You know what I mean, dealing with what we went through,” Kris corrected.

“Poorly.”

“Is that why you don’t sleep anymore?”

Kate hesitated for a moment, pausing with one of the pistol’s rails in hand and a rag in the other. “Your nightmares are memories. Mine are … worse. They’re not what actually happened, it’s a different outcome.”

“You never said anything about that….”

Kate sighed. Though Kris had her moments of being heartless when handling diplomacy, Kate’s mind was far more sinister and it loved to play hell on her. “It’s the same dream every time. It’s the same battle but … instead of dragging you to safety, I can’t make it… and I go down too. But that’s not even the worst thing about it. What gets me is after, when I recover … it changes me.” Kate’s voice had gone flat, much like Kris’ would when she was dealing with aggressive diplomacy. “I become cold, not cold like your moments of handling stubborn diplomats, completely unfeeling. All I concern myself with is seeking revenge. It’s like I don’t have a soul anymore.” Kate noticed Kris’ hand had taken the pistol rail from her, set it on the table, and taken Kate’s hand gently. She just bowed her head in a somber silence. “I wonder what it’s like...” Kris interrupted the quiet reflection.

“Huh?” Kate didn’t fully hear what Kris had said.

“…to have a normal life, be a normal girl with normal problems. To have your biggest priority for a day be finding the perfect pair of shoes instead of finding twenty trillion credits to reshuffle into agricultural development, maybe have a boyfriend… someone who cares about you for you and not the 19 billion people who depend on you.” Kris stopped herself as she started to ramble.

“To see things for their beauty and not for the threat they might pose,” Kate’s own confession breaking the silence caught Kris off guard, “to have your biggest worry be whether or not that coffee stain will come out, not whether or not you’ll have to blast someone’s head off when trying to arrest a band of smugglers…” Kate let out a facetious chuckle, “And maybe get to stop worrying about smugglers for once.”

“I suppose a girl can dream….”Kris trailed off, staring into the ceiling as though it wasn’t there and she could see straight through to the stars.

*Throws hands up in the air* Brilliant... Now ALL of my pictures aren't working...

The ****...

Good question.

Your humans are in an entirely different galaxy right? The Far Quadrant I believe you called it.

My civ doesn't have warp capabilities and are still residing in the milky way.

Nah. I changed it. They're back in the Milky Way.

I suppose that some small outlying small confederate exploration fleets could accidentally make contact with some Amalgam navy vessels or maybe even stumble upon the Javat controlled space.

So, @NeoLeaf, how are we getting our humanz together?

Nothing personal, quite sorry old sport.

As for how they get together... Hmmm...

Your civ's clan politics are somewhat complicated but I believe that some would try to garner influence and favor with the confederate council. The confederacy being what I made it out to be are trying to unite worlds across the sector and would have an interest in the more advanced and alien Terran Amalgam. They would try to send an emissary or envoy at some point after the discovery of one of your worlds or fleets.

Hmm. Ight.

If you want we could go the 'Trump route' and declare war on each other simply just because of bigotry or the worst aspects of human nature...

That way the OP races such as the Seria'Drakhul and among others would come, either to destroy us for good, enslave us, use us or if we're lucky to influence us...

What will most likely happen is that the Confederacy would eventually become another Great House, or they would try to structure it that way. They would establish trade in exchange for the Confederates adopting Shalun Law which would allow the De Valtos or Cadar to manhandle the Confederate economy through sanctioned trade wars. OR, try to outright absorb the Confederacy through military action if they refuse Shalun Law. A group recognized under the Law cannot be subjugated by another faction, because of the automatic war clause that would trigger all the other factions to be justified in then cannibalizing the offender. If the group is not recognized under the Law, they are fair game. This is why the Independent planets in the Far Quadrants pay mercenaries to protect them or pay tribute to a faction in exchange for independence.

Makes sense.

Mmmm... Abolish the council to replace it with a house and to accept the laws and ways of the Amalgam. Go to war to keep their sovereignty and way of life.

They wouldn't necessarily have to abolish their government. There's no rule that says that the Shalun-sanctioned factions have to be Syndicates or Great Houses, that's what they just happen to be. If anything, it would set a precedent for more Independents to become sanctioned by the Law, as many of them have democratic or representative governments.

But reuniting with humanity comes with a cost. Namely in the form of being inundated with traders, assassins, spies, and constantly having to haraunge and harass for resources with the closest faction. It doesn't help that every individual faction's navy could probably squash yours like a bug. (no offense, just from technological advancement and there being more of them)

Quite a bit more. Their fleet left Earth with a few billion live souls as well as pre-prepared test tube babies. Seeing as it's two hundred years after the landing and the policy of every faction has been to have as many children as possible, also given better medical technology, their overall population is probably close to 20 to 30 billion spread out over their various worlds.

Why does everyone have such a bad Idea for the Dredge man? They've never blown worlds up for no fucking reason. I've never declared war for no reason. Neo where did I go wrong?!

Sounds more like you're describing the Grand Federation of Order.....

I'm just stating that they have the capabilities to do those things, Jarkov.

And holy- That's a lot of people. By my estimates the confederacy numbers around 8-9 billion, Shireling.
