Sounds good ^^

It would be best if players knee each other for this (or I think so). Try and think of some interesting connections with each other ^^

I already have an idea for my character’s backstory. Can I just share it so that other players can come up with connections.

Keyleth Barazas spend her childhood and adolescence living the slums of a city. She would’ve stayed there, had she not been conscripted to go to war. She proved to be pretty good fighter, and a better leader. She rose up to a modest rank in the army.

However as she got higher in the chain of command, she began to notice the corruption of the higher ranks of the army. Using to power to ends that caused immense and unnecessary suffering of both soldiers and civilians on both sides. All to appease the guild masters and politicians who promised them wealth and power should they just do their bidding during the war.

She tried convince her other commanders to oppose this demagoguery, however the highest ranking officials didn’t want to have their exploits interrupted. They did everything they could to silence her. Because of this (and also likely because she was a Tiefling from the lower class) her higher ups grew to disdain her and her unit. It’s no surprise then that when they needed a unit to be sacrificed, they picked hers.

One day an important battle came. She was instructed to take her soldiers into a nearby forest. It didn’t make much sense to her. Why was she needed in the forest and why must her soldiers go alone? However orders were orders. While in the forest her messengers came with confusing news. It seemed that the other commanders where acting in way much different than the plan she was told.

She puzzled over it for hours, until they came. She was ambushed on both sides by enemy soldiers. It was mere minutes when she realized. Her troops were being used as a mere distraction. They tried their best to fight the attackers off. But it was too late. The enemies defeated line after line. She attempted a retreat. She now remembers little of the rush to escape. However she does remember sudden pain and falling unconscious. She woke up with an arrow at her side. After taking it out, she realized that both sides had left. She was forgotten in the heat of the situation.

She never found out what happened to her troops. It didn’t matter. The army probably was happy to assume that she was dead and she didn’t want to go there again anyway after what happened. While trekking her way out of the forest, she came across a black cape from a slain enemy soldier. She was overcome with a strong desire to take it for herself.

After that she began a spiritual journey. She left her nation unnoticed. She lived a simple life. She repressed the anger she felt during her time at the army for many years, throwing the cape into a river. One day while hunting in the woods she found a old black cape in the forest. It was the exact same one she saw in the woods all those years ago.

This caused all the rage to resurface. She took the cape and made an oath to avenge the soldiers who died in that people, and everyone else harmed by the avarice of the elites. And she became a paladin! However she had lost a lot of her skill from all those years after she left the army. She would have to get stronger if she wanted to fulfill your mission. So she became an adventure to get the experience and skills that she needed.

I need to write a description of her personality later.

Awesome.

Some possible options for a tie-in:
  • Maybe I (Zasheir) found you after the battle and help you back to town. That also means I was there and watched silently when you took that black cape in the forest.
  • During simple life time, I lived in the same town/village and we knew each other.
  • Our paths crossed after you had taken your oath and I thought it might be interesting to see it through with you.

Maybe all our characters can be from this certain city since my character (Rolph) is a dwarf mason and jeweler who got screwed over by his guild and went to the priesthood of Lathandros to restart his life.

My bard is a charlatan who recently left her traveling carnival because people from her past were so she could have gone to the same town to lay low.

I think it would make sense that our characters would know each other, as we both get our powers from divine sources. Perhaps you could’ve introduced me to your religion or something.

Our backstories have that similiar element of getting screwed over and getting powers from divine sources so I can agree to that! :3

The only problem I could see with this is that since you’re a life cleric and I’m a vengeance paladin our powers are thematically very starkly different. Since this is an official module, I assume that we’ll be using the gods and deities of the Forgotten Realms. Does anyone know of a god or religion that would fit?

Ilmater, god of endurance.
Helm, god of protection
Shar, goddess of darkness and loss

I would suggest those three. While your paladin oath could be vengence the backstory also gives nods to the soldier so Ilmater and Helm could have been gods that Keyleth could have prayed too since then and became her patrons as she took her oath. Or Shar as the focal point on Keyleth refusing to forget the pain she and her comrades fept and her promise to exact that same pain to the greedy bastards that put her there in the first place.

It doesn't *have* to be their god's if there's one you like. I'm not gumma be picky about yhat
I think maybe we could just make up a religion that worships a few gods and have one be a god more suiting to my character and another more suiting to Good Doctor’s character.

I would say that a paladin working against those who do oppose a particular god's ideals (Lathander in this case) would make sense for them taking an oath of vengeance.

So I had a long explanation of an idea with a lot of details.

Then rpnation forced me to reload.

My idea to incorporate vegence and life is a goddess with an equally dual nature. I was thinking maybe a night or twilight goddess

I think for my part, the Arch Mage died at the University I had grown up in and his replacement displaced several mages who would have stood in the way of his ambition. I was one such.

After moving on, I settled in a quaint town and made a modest living for myself as with minor magic and rituals to help people of the surrounding towns.

I’m super flexible with the timelines and placement of all of that and can fit into anyone else’s situation.
