The Academy of the Protection.

HappyBeingMe

That Music Loving Loner

The year is 2193. It's been one hundred and eighteen years since humans were evacuated from the earth. In 2075, creatures came and stole the earth from us, killing our people and turning them into their own kind. Mindless hungry savages. A quarter of the Earth was evacuated to the nearest liveable planet, which we now call New Earth, and the others were left to die. The small quarter managed to scrape together what they would call a life on New Earth, before the war began. In a foolish battle in which we were unequipped and dumb to the ways of the creatures who had taken over, our population was quartered yet again. Four of the remaining population forged The Protection, agents to protect New Earth, and try to retrieve what was left of our old world. Over time our population grew, and a life was truly established on the planet. But we still needed protection. And so the training school was created, to train those who wanted to help to protect the people left behind. I am part of The Academy of The Protection.

Micah was up an hour before the wake up alarm rang in the small rectangular dorms. His own dorm, empty and plain, was just there to get him through the day, and had no luxuries that other people preferred. He had woken up in cold sweat, haunted by dreams of his parents, and paced the grey room for an hour. When the bell, however, did eventually ring, he stood straight and opened his wardrobe door, pulling out his academy uniform, a beige short sleeved tshirt and a pair of combat trousers. The day would hold annoyance and discomfort for him, he knew that new recruits were being pulled into the academy system, and being the top of his class he would be used an example of what the academy could teach you.

Nikki stood straight, her hands clasped behind her back. She was wearing the academy uniform along with a pair of combat boots, and her brown hair was tied back in a ponytail. She was a new recruit, and she was going on a starter mission soon. She didn't know who'd be assigned as her partner, she just knew that it would be one of the top of the class. She was nervous, to say the least.

Micah walked into the academy centre, where students were assigned to their new partners. He had never had much luck with partners, last year his had died, and there was nothing that anyone on his team could have done to save him. So this year, Micah was hoping that he'd end up alone, less of a liability. He walks towards the male line confidently, his jaw set in stone. When the other recruits had arrived, the females and the new recruits in separate lines from the males, the names began to be called for registration. Your name would be called and you would shout here, and that would be it. A few eyes were trained on Micah when he shouted his confirmation, but at the end of it, a silence filled the room. The partners were about to be called.

Nikki lets out a shaky breath as she waits for her partner. She hears the commander shouting names, and ordering them their partners. Do you have to be so loud? She asks the commander in her head, but she stares blankly ahead. Her body straight, and her mouth in a straight line. "Nikki Manson!" The commander shouts and Nikki walks four steps in front of her. "Yes, sir!" She shouts back at him. Who was her partner going to be?

Micahs jaw was clenched, if he could just make it through partner call without having to be paired, then the year would be a breeze for him. He listens to the names carefully and listens to people being paired. Once they were paired, they were to wait till they were dismissed and then they would meet their partner for the first time, or for the more lucky ones, meet their partner again. Micah hears a girls name, and her shout, and then, to his surprise, his own name. "Micah Kadence!" The commander shouts, and something sinks in his stomach when he realises he's been paired, and worse... With a new recruit. "Yes, sir!" He shouts back, stood confidently with his eyes trained only on the commander.

Nikki's eyes travel up and down the boy's body. So this is my partner? She asks herself. She was confused, she always figured that the new recruits would be paired with somebody less.. 'Professional?' Nikki walks respectively over to Micah's side, then she salutes the commander. "Yes, sir!" She says, her voice demanding and the commander nods at her curtly. Nikki lets a rigid breath escape her lungs, but she keeps her posture.

Micahs hands are behind his back and he stands straight, waiting to be dismissed. Eventually everyone is paired, some with old friends, some with new people, and they are dismissed to the common rooms for an hour before mission assignments. Micah leaves the room, walking quickly and with his eyes trained only forwards. This girl would be such a liability to him, what if she got killed? He couldn't let that happen again but she would be so useless to him... Micah walks into the common room and into a corner silently, hoping he had left the girl behind when he had walked away quickly.

Nikki loses her posture when they're dismissed, and she goes to say something to Micah, only to see that he was gone. "Oh." She says to herself before walking towards the training center. She needed to get a bit of a work out before mission assignment. When she arrives she pushes past a couple of people and gets to the pull up bar. She grabs a hold of it and starts to lift herself up, counting in her head. One, two, three, four, five, six. She did twenty without a problem, then she hopped down and rubbed her slightly sore arms before walking to the weights.

Micah was sat silently in the corner of the room, debating whether or not to go to the commander about how much of a liability this Nikki girl would be. He stands up and walks out of the room, towards the commanders office, he knocks lightly and waits outside it, trying to come up with something to say that wouldn't be too childish. The commander knew about what had happened last year, what had happened with his last partner. The commander called for him to come in, he was sat at his desk with some paperwork in front of him, and Micah sat in front of him silently, waiting to be allowed to speak.

Nikki sighs, then puts the weight back on it's holder before walking out of the work out center. She walks up some stairs, and around some corners until she sees Micah walk into the commander's office. He curiosity got the best of her, so she quietly walked by and stood by the door, pretending that she had to see the commander as well. I wonder what he's asking the commander.. I shouldn't do this, I could make Micah hate me even more than he probably already does.

The commander lets out a short breath, "Micah Kadence, am I correct? Let's see... Top of your class. Your parents... Yes we knew them very well. And Styles... I'm sorry for your loss. What could possibly bring you here?" Micah keeps his eyes on the commanders, not breaking contact, being professional. "Sir," he says, clearing his throat slightly, "it's my partner. She's new, she doesn't know anything, I highly doubt she even knows what Earth looks like. She'll get killed, or me killed." He breaks eye contact for a moment, remembering his partner. He had been new too. "It'll just be like Styles all over again, sir."

Her eyes went cold and she glares at the door, her mind wanting her to break it down and show Micah how much she knew. "Doesn't know anything?" She whispers angrily, then she raises her fist to knock on the door. Before she does, though, she stops and just walks away. She didn't have time for this, she had to prove herself. "I don't have to prove anything to that twit." She says to herself, but she knew it wasn't true. If they were going to be partners than they have to learn to work together.

The commander shakes his head, "Even if we could do anything, we won't. She is your partner and she will be until next year. You cant change this. And you'd be surprised by how much she actually knows, Kadence. You'll be fine, both of you. Now go, your mission assignments are in ten minutes." Micah knows not to argue with the commander, his temper and determination being well known amongst the recruits, and so instead he nods his head and stands up, leaving the room. Once out of the room he walks straight to the great hall and sits in the seat with his name on, next to Nikki's, ready to wait for ten more minutes for his assignment. Last year, his first assignment had been easy, he and Styles had to guard an area of New Earth, and it had been uneventful. Naturally, the assignments through the year had grown harder, and eventually had resulted in Styles death. Micah wasn't going to let anyone else die on his watch, and he hoped that Nikki would be easy to save.

Nikki gets to her destination, the great hall, after walking around for a few minutes. When she gets there she has to fight the urge to turn around and leave when she sees Micah, instead she just walks to her place and stands straight as the commander walks in.

Micah stands when the commander walks in, he hadn't looked at Nikki properly once. He didn't want to look at her or get to know her, he just wanted to get rid of her. The commander told everyone to sit and Micah did, his back straight, his eyes on the front. "Your assignments are, naturally, harder than last year, recruits. Your skills will be tested in four categories. Survival, combat, intelligence, and teamwork." Well, teamwork was definitely out for Micah. "First, we will call the partners names, you will stand, and a professor will lead you out of the room to discuss your assignments. Now, if that is understood, I shall begin..." The names began to reel off and people were led from the room, and when "Manson and Kadence" was called, Micah stood up and waited for Nikki.

Nikki stares straight ahead and walks straight pass Micah, she didn't need somebody who thought of her as a burden. She stands at her full height, some of her hair falling down from the ponytail she had it in. She nervously chews on her lower lip, the anticipation was killing her.
((Sorry for the short replies I was on tapatalk))

Micah walks behind Nikki and follows the professor who was leading them into a small room. He walks in, and the door shuts automatically behind him, and he sits at one of the two chairs in front of the professor. On the surface he's calm, collected, confident, but inside he's nervous, and slightly afraid. He didn't know what to expect. The professor clears his throat and clicks a button on their desk, a floating hologram of earth appears in the middle of the room. "Survival," he begins, his eyes shifting from Nikki to Micah, "you will need to work together, you will need to fight. Earth is dangerous, there are things there that want to kill you. Personally, I don't think any of the recruits are ready for survival on Earth. The commander disagrees. He is sending you both to a small secluded island that we managed to contain on our last trip to Earth." The image in the room zooms in on an island with trees and water and all typical island things.

Micah raises his eyebrows and clears his throat, "I don't understand. Are you sending us to Earth?"

Nikki bites hard on her lip, ignoring the taste of blood filling her mouth. She didn't say anything, she just looked at the island. She had just started here, and they're sending her to the most dangerous place in the galaxy? Are these people crazy? She asks herself, but she shakes her head. She wasn't going to show any sign of weakness, as that thought ran in her head she raised a finger to wipe the blood from her now sore lip.

"Yes, we're sending you to Earth. Tomorrow, you will be escorted to a pod, and you will be flown to this island. All of your equipment will be on the pod. I know that you, Manson, are new, and you're inexperienced with this, but trust us. We're sending you with Kadence here because he will not let us down. He will not let you down. Trust him. And Kadence, trust Manson, don't let what you think you know deceive you. And stay alive." The professor nods his head and looks from one to the other. "Any questions?" He asks, his eyebrows raised. He taps his fingers on the desk as the image of the island rotates in front of them.

Trust him? TRUST HIM? How can I trust somebody who 'knows' I'm going to die? This is incredibly stupid. She thinks to herself then allows a long sigh to escape from her mouth. "No, sir." She says, then she looks at Micah through the corner of her eye. No doubt he's going to ask if he can have a new partner, and honestly I wouldn't care. She thinks to herself before connecting her hands behind her back.

"No, sir." Micah shakes his head and looks at the professor who nods and dismisses them. He stands and walks towards the door, and just as it opens and he's about to walk through, the professor says, "Work. Together." Micah turns back around and nods his head once, "yes, sir," he confirms and walks out of the door, waiting in the hall for Nikki. He was going to have to talk to her at some point, maybe now would be good? If he was going to be forced to work together with her then he would have to make some kind of effort.

Nikki walks out of the room to see Micah standing in the wall, perhaps waiting for her. She crosses her arms across her chest and raises an eyebrow. "You're not going to make me call you sir, are you?" She asks, a slight smirk forcing it's way onto her face. She knew she probably shouldn't speak to her superior this way, but she was angry. She did stupid things when she was angry.

How long had it been since someone had called him by his first name? He didn't have friends anymore, and he didn't have parents or family. He felt uncomfortable when called by his first name now, like it was something personal that belonged only to him, no one could use it. "No." He says, looking down at her, "But you can call me Kadence." He crosses his arms across his own chest and mirrors her facial expression. He didn't know how to talk to anyone who he wasn't giving orders to or taking orders from anymore. "First things first, Manson, what do you know about Earth?" He jumps straight in, willing to just bypass the small talk and friendly business.

"I know that it's been overrun, and it's highly dangerous. I know that everything on Earth has been enhanced, and the plants have overgrown." She says, her smirk turning into a straight line and her hands going down to her sides. Her blue eyes stared straight ahead, at Micah's neck. She was tall, but he was taller. She had to hold back the urge to stand on her toes to seem taller.
