In the darkness, there have been songs of ages; wisdom passed through generations. Knowledge gained through the cold, hard reality of failure. Those who came before. The legends. They knew they would not succeed. They knew they would fall. They knew the enemy would prevail, and the flames of hope would extinguish. Dreams shattered, empires crumbled, lives perished. They knew. They knew there was only one thing left that could fix it. That would make things right. That would…

REVIVE.

Righteous beyond compare, bringing a spark to the hearts of the weary beings.

Empathy would spread, communication, understanding.

Virtuous, honourable, the beacon of faith.

Imagination clamouring through the minds of the populous.

Veteran of the wars of the past, pushing through obstacles with ease.

Experts in all forms of study, ready to lead the people to the light.

It was all to REVIVE.

The ancestors came together as one, initiating their final plan. They sent out one last message; a request, a plea, asking for the mightiest souls to gather and fight. To resist the oncoming wave of destruction, and to cultivate new descendants, passing the everlasting battle on to the next generation. To make sure that the flames would not go out, and that there would be torches ready to take on the flare, shouldering the burden of the eternal war. To recover, revitalise, renew, restore. To refresh, restart, reinforce, reawaken. To recuperate, resume, repeat. To REVIVE.

No one answered the call.

Happiness.

It’s something that I think about a lot. What does it mean to be happy?

Was I happy when I saw the sun set for the first time? I had watched in complete awe from my perch on my brother’s shoulders as the sun’s light bled into the sky, giving everything an orange tint. The clouds became pink fluffs trailing through the sky. I remember reaching for the cloud above me, imaging that if I touched it, it would feel like cotton candy. As the sun was swallowed by the ocean, the last bits of light that stayed stubbornly in the sky felt like a goodbye, as if the light wasn’t sure it would return the next day and wanted to give us the prettiest sight imaginable before it disappeared for good.

Was I happy when I looked at sunflowers? I had always liked to stare up at their vibrant petals and imagine how soft they would feel when I was tall enough to touch them. I would hide underneath their bright leaves and hold back giggles as my brother searched around for me, pretending that sunflowers held a supernatural ability to make me invisible.

Can I truly consider these ‘happy’ memories when they don’t feel happy, knowing what I know now? I didn’t know that most of my time was spent with my brother because our parents didn’t want us around when they were having a fight. I didn’t know that my brother was allergic to sunflowers.

When is someone truly happy?

Aaand the first Writing Games prompt of 2017 has ended!

Three very good posts here. Great way to start the year off. But if I had to pick a winner, it would be... @Awkwardpotato! Congrats! It really was a tough choice, though. @S n o w, I quite liked your twist at the end, and @Venomous_Tia, that was an interesting way to look at happiness. But I loved the neatness of @Awkwardpotato's one, among other things, so, yeah. Potato.

Awesome!!!!!!!! I feel honored to be the first. In honor of the new years, here is a new years themed prompt:

Prompt: You are sitting watching the ball drop on New Year's Eve. The countdown has begun. Once you reach zero everything freezes.

Time Limit: 73 hours from time stamp on this post.

Words: 1000 maximum.

Have fun!!!!

DONG

It started off with the resonating sound of harmony. Of rhythm. Of great, deep energy. The end of the old. The start of the new. Everything would be refreshed, with regrets and resolutions, with reactions and ramifications. Anything would be possible. Anything could be good. Anything could be bad. It was the beginning of the end.

DONG

Air sweeping around, wind rushing past, atoms hitting atoms, going down fast, it fell.

Gleaming bright from the surrounding lights, glowing black in color, feeling the pull of gravity, growing that much duller, it fell.

DONG

Watching from the chair of black,

Sitting far down at the back,

Seeing as it fell,

Listening for the bell,

Hearing the big iron thwack.

DONG

Flowing to the ground

Anticipating impact

Reaching to the end

DONG

Driving downwards, cracking onto floorboards,

Orchestrating music from the floorboards,

Noticing the firmness of the floorboards,

Going down the length of solid floorboards.

DONG

Rolling

Down the aisle

Coming to the finish

Bowling over two, four, six, eight…

And Strike.

DONG

In the London air, the Clock Tower chimed, coming to the end of the end.

DONG

The cold was advancing. The ice was expanding. It was beginning to ascend.

DONG

Layers of snow were hardening, fingers of frost were darkening. The colour of warmth was fluttering away.

DONG

The web stretched throughout the lands, to every place, to every time. Everything was being muffled by the creeping dread.

DONG

The lights were fading. The fires were extinguishing. The world was becoming dark.

DONG

And then everything was frozen.

"I've lost contact with Central, sir."

He closed his eyes briefly and took a calming breath. As he released it, he opened his eyes and approach the soldier that had spoken up. They had been recieving reports all day as the world started to change its calendars to the new year of time zones just dropping off the grid. No amount of expeditions ever produced anything. Once an object or person crossed into the affected timezone, silence fell. The world had been too wrapped up in the new year celebrations to take notice. Well, until it was too late. They had recieved word from Central that they had lost contact with the East Coast roughly 15 minutes after the East Coast had reached midnight. It wasn't till the Mountain timezone hit midnight did they receive news on what was going on. When they did, there was nothing anyone could do.

Thankfully, what was really happening had been kept from the soldiers and civilians. There was no need to stress them out as well. "Then shut the system down and go join the others, soldier," he gently ordered. He gave a grin, one soft around the edges and a bit tired. "No need to man this post if nothing is happening."

The soldier nodded, saluted, and went about shutting the system down. He watched the soldier leave the room with another salute before he took a moment to himself. With all that was going on, he found himself numb to it all. It was weird but he took what little miracles he could get.

He glanced at the clock. They had just over fifty minutes and a mild dose of fear shot through him. What would happen when it hits midnight? Would they just freeze, even their conciousness? Or would they go crazy unable to move or interact with anyone or die from starvation and thirst before they coupd go crazy?

He shoved the thoughts from his mind as he stepped out of the room and made his way out of the compound.

Hawaii's air was warm, comforting, for whatever reason. He took a deep breath and turned his gaze to the stars, relaxing. The nice thing about their base of operation was its seclusion. The men were throwing a mini party not far from where he was standing and he decided, when the clock stroke midnight, he wanted to be looking at the stars.

And the Winner is: @asharasahara!!!!! If you would like to see what i thought of your piece individually feel free to pm the piece and i'll give you my opinion and stuff. Yeah.

Thanks.

It began as a dream. One he wasn’t sure could be. But it lingered. Haunted, if it hadn’t been for the smiles and strength it brought.

And when all was lost, there it was. Light in darkness. Hope in hopelessness. Sanctuary. Home.

It was a sanctuary, smelling of rosemary. Literary mercenaries’ itinerary lead to this contemporary library of primary necessity. The evolutionary hierarchy was hereditary and as arbitrary as the monastery’s military missionaries’ customary vocabulary – unnecessary, unsanitary, deflationary, involuntary, in this extraordinary imaginary sanctuary.

(sneaks in cause a winner hasn't been chosen yet)

Sanctuary

Run to it

Feel its warm embrace

The cold of the snow won’t worry you there

Run to it

Bask in its glory

The Sanctuary will shield you

Run to it

Watch its beauty

The Sanctuary will end all the pain

Sorry for the delay. Vacation ended differently than I had anticipated. I'm glad you jumped in @KiKi Kitsune and thank you for the prod, @IctoraPost. I needed it.

At the end of it all, the winner is
@Little. Well done everyone and good luck on the next one.

Thank you!

Prompt:

Robotic

Word Limit:

Maximum of 850 words, exactly.

Time Limit:

48 hours from this post.

Have fun and good luck to you all!  ;3

Beep. Beep. Beep.

I look down at you, tears stinging my cheeks. You lie on the bed, so elegant. So sweet. But so sad. So, so sad. I choke back a sob. Why? Oh, why? Why did this happen? What have we done to deserve this? We were so happy, all these years together. You and I, we talked together, we played together, we walked together, we lived together – we were inseparable. Every waking hour, and every sleeping one, you were never far away. Always watching. Always listening. Always there in times of need – in times of happiness, in times of sadness, you were the one thing I could forever rely on. The only constant in my life.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

I have trouble seeing through my tears. I don’t bother to wipe them away, letting them stream down my face – painful streaks of despair that will be eternally embedded into my memory. I remember the times we had together. When we went to the movies and you almost got us thrown out because you were being so loud. Remember that? How about when you fell into the pool that time? I was so worried, until I realised that a little bit of water wouldn’t hurt you. You were much stronger than that. And when you helped me cheat in that math test? We were so lucky we weren’t caught. I might not have seen you again.

Beep. Bzzt. Beep.

I sniff and wipe my nose with the sleeve of my shirt, not caring that it might get ruined. Remember when we first met? We were in that shop, and the moment I saw you, I couldn’t take my eyes off you. It was love at first sight. It took some time getting used to, but soon we were together forever. Or so I thought. Remember our first date? It was so boring that I had to keep looking at you to keep me occupied. And you are so very good at keeping me always touching and staring, then wanting more after. Don’t go. Please, please don’t go. I need you. If you’re gone, then I won’t know what to do with my life. I won’t have a purpose. Please stay with us. Pease. Please!

Beezp bzztzcht bzzpz kzzz…

I lower my head as my phone finally dies.

Heh, thanks.

But why is no one posting? :(

A generic prompt worked last time, so let's try that again.
