Eden is currently the largest supercity on earth, covering nearly one hundred thousand kilometers squared, with a population just shy of four-hundred million people. Earth's current population is down to five billion, which is largely due to Earth's natural surface becoming inhospitable after an exponential increase in pollution.

Earth has long since been sucked dry of its natural resources, and the Sun itself is barely visible behind a haze of black smog. The only reason humanity has managed to survive is thanks to the discovery of a unique fuel source abundant beneath in the Earth's crust. This fuel, talson, possesses an unnatural set of physical and chemical properties and dwarfs the output of traditional fuels. Unfortunately, in the race to beat global warming, humanity neglected to test the full extent of the effects of taloson exposure to humans. After a few years of constant subjection, the fuel causes sudden massive DNA mutations, resulting in the formation of unholy monsters. By the time these effects were uncovered, chunks of the population had already lost their humanity.

Most of these monsters have gone into hiding, emerging every now and then only to feed on the human populace.

Scientists of Eden managed to utilize controlled mutations by talson to create genetically modified super soldiers in the hopes of defeating the abominations that plagued the city streets. Most of the subjects in these experiments died agonizing deaths, while some survived and developed extraordinary abilities. The enhanced bodies and senses of these successful subjects proved invaluable in the hunting and killing of monsters.

There's currently less than a hundred Witchers left in Eden. The project has since been disavowed by the government, and Witchers aren't exactly heroic figures in the public eye.

Taloson is still very much a primary fuel source for humanity, but is handled very differently in order to avoid human exposure. The energy crisis is ancient history, and flying cars, laser weapons, invisibility cloaks, energy shields, teleportation, human augmentation, the whole sci-fi charade is now reality for mankind. Naturally the ECPD keeps most of the potentially destructive tech out of the hands of civilians. The currency is now a universal system of credits (C) with 10 credits equivalent to about one 21st century U.S. dollar.

Monsters - mutants born from taloson exposure that attack the human population. Some are simple minded creatures and can generally be handled by the ECPD, others are more cunning and require more experienced monster hunters to eliminate. They're particularly vulnerable to silver weaponry, although silver has unfortunately become something of a precious resource.

Monster hunters - Witchers and foolhardy humans that roam the city streets looking for contracts, usually in exchange for a substantial fee. Witchers usually carry a specialized silver sword and an array of performance enhancing potions, while their human counterparts tend to rely on ranged weapons.

ECPD - the Eden City Police Department keeps the peace, but don't actively hunt down monsters themselves. They're considerably less worried about the poorer districts of Eden, and are usually paid off by wealthy crime gangs.

Criminals - mafia, cut-purses, and the general scum of society are ripe in the lower districts of Eden. They're particularly fond of monster hunters and their credits.
