We Should Be Enemies [Darren Shan 1x1]

Training with Larten Crepsley was not easy. He pushed and pushed and pushed her to work harder, and she simply didn't have the strength to train as hard as he wanted her to. Kayleigh had never fought before but he expected her to learn quickly, as if she were simply relearning old tricks. But she hardly knew how to punch someone the correct way, let alone slice out an enemy's innards with her own fingernails. The fingernails were another thing she could not get used to. Compared to her human ones which had been tame and filed down and well looked after, these looked tragic. They were sharp enough to cut fabric - which had destroyed a lot of her clothes in the first few weeks - and rather pointy; she didn't like them, but she would have to get used to them. Still, being a half-vampire had its perks.

She could still venture out in the daylight, which Kayleigh was extremely happy about. It gave her time to spend alone and away from Crepsley - a major relief if anyone was to ask her. There was only so much time a seventeen year-old girl could spend with a two hundred year-old man. In fact, that was what she was doing at that very moment: spending time on his own. It was mid-afternoon and Crepsley was deep in his sleep, and she took the opportunity to wander the forest in which they were spending the day. She wasn't going to lie, she enjoyed being out in the wilds more than she enjoyed spending time with the Cirque. The people in the Cirque were more than welcoming to her, especially Evra, who entertained her for most of the day, but there was only so much one could do while travelling with a circus of freaks. As if she wasn't also a freak.

The rays of the mid-afternoon sun fell delicately against her skin and she soaked in the warmth. Kayleigh couldn't quite recall how long she'd been wandering around the forest for, but she was pleased to find herself at a small river. She crouched down and cupped her hands, dipping it into the cool water to bring them back up to her lips. She sipped on the refreshing water and sighed contently. Perhaps she was too relaxed, because she did not register the strange and pungent smell coming from across the river.
