LORE
—The Society.
New Orleans.
— Nola is filled with those who can use magic. The community is a melting pot of different cultures and backgrounds. If asked about the magical community one might say that it’s the most peaceful that it’s ever been while others, those brave enough, speak of the darker side. Within the community there are many problems. Pureblood familes are seen has higher than many, with halfbloods next in line and then finally, mudanes. There is prejudice, as “lighter” magic is typically favored over dark. Magical creatures are looked down on, seen as beast and given a range of restrictions in keep them in place.
LA MAGIE ACADÈMIE.
— La Magie Académie was created during the first half of the 19th century, during the time of which New Orleans was known as America’s wealthiest and third largest city. It was built with the help of all three ruling magical classes, the magi, the vampires, and the werewolves, after the conflict between them was resolved and a treaty was set in place. La Magie Académie survived the trails of time, standing strong even as racial tensions took place and many of the freed residents were forced to flee and the effort to contain, segregate, and disempower those who stayed increased.
La Magie is located in a place that is known as The Other. It is technically but not exactly, the workings of this mysterious place is unknown but is said to have been created by the original founders of the school. Only those within the magical community can access The Other and can leave via portals that transport them to different places within New Orleans.
La Magie is a large building with architectural influences. There is a certain beauty to the school and The Other in general, some call it haunting. La magi is surrounded by a vast forest of Southern Live Oak and cypress trees, many are adorned in spanish moss. The forest has a number of swamps.
The dorms are separated by house and the rooms by genders. All students, excluding those on patrol, must be in their dorms by 10 pm sharp.
The are three houses of La Magie, each belonging to a different religion/culture;
• Le Revenant - Home to those of the voodoo faith and the set of magical beliefs known as hoodoo. Revenant members are of the earth and the other side. On one hand they work with nature, from the sweetest honey to dirt from the graveyard and on the other they invoke spirits, be it ancestors or the mystical beings called Loa, offering up gifts of things loved in during their time alive. These are the ancestors of the enslaved, the oppressed, who are guided by those who lived before them. It focuses on teaching its students the importance of being connected with their ancestors. Students of Revenant learn about the different groups of loa and their history. They learn of their met tet, their guiding/ruling loa and receiving their pot tet, sealing the bond.
• La Terre - House Terre is called home by those who Wicca. There is great diversity among individuals within this house and Wiccan religion, but many are duotheistic, worshiping both a female goddess and a male god (sometimes referred to as a Mother Goddess and a Horned God). They learn of rituals that often include holidays centered around phases of the moon; solar equinoxes and solstices; elements such as fire, water, earth and air; and initiation ceremonies. Terre is nature based, teaching its students the importance of respecting the earth. Many believe the Threefold Law, a religious tenet held by some Wiccans that states that whatever energy a person puts out into the world, be it positive or negative, will be returned to that person three times. Because of this they are seen as “lighter” magic users.
• Le Maléfice - Those who practice Theistic Satanism reside here, also known as Satanists. Maléfice members view Satan and other demonic entities as being to work with. Lilith is also a good example, as well as Asmodeus. Maléfice is seen as the more accepting of the houses, the least willing to conform. Maléfice is one of the newer houses compared to the other two.
— Headmaster Dubois: The headmaster was a beloved figure in the community for many years, so it made sense when he was appointed headmaster, after the tragic death of the previous one. It was he who saved them from destruction when they became exposed to the humans so long ago, offering tough solutions when no one else would. Dubois is a mysterious yet friendly man with a warm, grandfather like aura.
Feast of Feast - A feast where two of the top students are chosen to offer up their flesh to members of the staff and other students. It is seen as an honor and ultimate sacrifice for the good of the community.
—WEREWOLVES.
GENERAL INFO.
— In human form, the werewolves have superhuman strength, durability, agility, senses, and accelerated healing. When riled in human form they are able to show their aggression and beast-like features such as black , yellow glowing eyes, popped veins, and sharp canines. They have higher temperatures and are considered warmer than most, sometimes even wondering if said individual is catching a 'fever" by human standards. In wolf form, their heightened senses increase and their bites are deadly lethal to vampires.
Although they heal quickly, things like silver and wolfsbane will cause them to be severely weakened or even killed depending on how much they are exposed too. They are more vulnerable in their human forms as well.
COMMON WOLVES.
— Common werewolves can only turn into a werewolf during nights coinciding with the peak of the lunar cycle during their sleep. Regular wolves who were infected often have short-term memory loss, leaving them in confusion of wounds which might have been caused during the night or their actions.
Despite having no control over and during their transformation, certain fragments of their personality and fears can be imbibed by the werewolf's mind, especially strong ones. Aside from hunger, suppressed fears or aggression can drive them to kill in their beast form. When someone is bitten the transformation takes three whole days. Because of the possibility of them going haywire upon changing created werewolves are few, with rules surrounding them.
PUREBLOOD WOLVES
— Their human side retains more control over their animal side, and they can remember afterwards what happens during their transformation. They can transform any time they want. Pureblood werewolves are born rather than bitten.
Purebloods can also feed on just animal hearts, but if they get a taste of human hearts, it is harder to control themselves. They will be drawn to eating human hearts, the temptation escalating with each heart eaten. It is still difficult for them to eat animal hearts even if they can resist.
THE CRESCENT PACK.
— The main werewolf pack is The Crescent Pack. The Crescent Pack resides within and close to the bayou of New Orleans, far away from the prying eyes of humans and other supernaturals. The majority of the pack lives within the bayou but there are a few who live outside of the pack house, mostly to act as informants for the pack. The role of Alpha is passed down through bloodline. The New Orleans werewolves are based on the Cajun werewolf the rougarou.
— Bastien Comeaux: Bastien is the current leader of the Crescent Pack. It is his responsibility to watch over the werewolves of New Orleans, be it those in the pack or rouges. Bastien is a Cajun man, a descendant from french canadian werewolves who settled in New Orleans long ago. His family has been the alphas of New Orleans and are the ones who founded the pack.
—VAMPIRES.
GENERAL INFO.
—
Vampires possess supernatural senses, strength, durability, agility, speed. Vampires also possess a healing factor, which is more effective depending on the amount of blood they consume. They also have the ability to compel humans, and only humans.
In order to complete the transition into a vampire, the person must then consume a significant amount of human blood, at least a sip's worth, within the next twenty-four hours, or else they will die. Vampires can only feed on human blood in order to complete the blood need not be from a live human and can be completed by drinking from blood bags. A vampire in transition is neither truly living nor truly dead until they make their choice to either complete their transition or to abstain from feeding and ultimately die. If a person is turned at a young age then they will continue to grow and age up until they reach the 21.
A vampire's true face is the appearance they are hiding under their normal human face. When a vampire's true face is revealed, the sclera of their eyes turns blood-red, dark veins appear under their eyes as the blood pumps forcefully through them, and their canine teeth extend into razor-sharp fangs. On some occasions, a vampire's fang teeth can include both their canines and their lateral incisors.
While immortal and near indestructible vampires have a number of weaknesses.
Broken Neck: Breaking a vampire's neck will not kill them, but it will render in a death-like state for varying amounts of time, depending on the diet and age of the person in question.
Decapitation: Dismembering or manually removing the head of a vampire will result in an instant and permanent death.
Desiccation: Vampires who abstain from blood for extended amounts of time will eventually desiccate and mummify.
Fire: Vampires are highly flammable and sensitive to fire, and will quickly burn and die from it if the flames are not extinguished in time.
Heart Extraction: Removing the heart of a vampire will result in permanent death.
Invitation: Vampires cannot enter a home without an invitation by the owner.
Sunlight: Sunlight and UV rays burn vampires on contact, and prolonged exposure will cause them to burst into flames and die. However, this weakness can be mitigated by the use of a lapis lazuli stone enchanted with a specific protection spell by a witch for a particular vampire, which is usually affixed to jewelry, though it requires the vampire to wear the stone at all times.
COMMON VAMPIRES.
— Common Vampires are those who have been turned by original vampires or are descendants of an original vampire. Common Vampires have the ability to turn humans and sire fledgling vampires.
ORIGINAL VAMPIRE.
— The exact history of Original Vampires is unknown but it is common fact that they are some of the oldest vampires around and rumored to be the first of vampire kind. Original Vampires are much more resilient than common vampires and so are those that they create. They have the ability to compel humans and lesser vampires.
CLAN AUGSTIN.
— In New Orleans there are many vampires who live alone or with their makers, however the most well known would be the Clan Augustin. The head of the clan is a original vampire who settled in New Orleans long ago. Clan Augustin acts as the representatives for the vampire community.
— Claude Augustin: Claude is the leader of the Clan Augustine. During his time as a human Claude was a freed man of color, since he was the son of a French aristocrat and his black mistress. Claude was closer to his mother but was not able to spend that much time with her. Instead he was forced to leave for France with his father, who later made him join the military, it was during battle that he was turned. Claude returned to New Orleans later in life, exploring the world before eventually settling and forming his clan.
