Family Disappointment
"Alright, is that everyone?"
This had since become one of the most commonly uttered sentences for many heroes in today's society. An abnormally large influx of villainous activity had begun to wash over Japan, almost as if it were a tsunami, meaning that more and more heroes were called in each day to assist civilians -both with and without Quirks of their own- in escaping capture. After the disappearance of the notorious All For One, it would have seemed as if the League of Villains had fallen off of the radar alongside him- until now. Each day, villains more powerful than the last rampaged the city, quickly exhausting all available resources and heroes in their attempts in defeating Izuku Midoriya, the successor of All Might, the number one hero.
It was this exact desire that had brought several heroes to where they were currently standing, post-battle in the middle of the city. Several pawns from the League of Villains had taken hostages within a nearby building. It was only when the pro-heroes arrived that they began to rampage, setting things alight with flame, crashing into buildings, and calling all-around chaos. Luckily for the public, and for the heroes that had responded, the majority of their nefarious counterparts were low-level, proving them to be less of a threat than they had previously been perceived. However, that had not stopped them from exploiting every weakness they could find- fire, exhaustion, an overwhelming instinct to protect citizens first.
Helping another civilian to medical services, a young woman clad in black slid the limp arm from around her shoulders, ensuring the other's safety before turning to survey the scene that had been left in their wake. Police and heroes were rounding up captured villains, dragging them into armored vehicles to keep them from escaping back into the public and causing more damage to anyone or anything. Innocent bystanders- men, women, and even children were being taken to hospitals, the catastrophe having worn on their bodies, minds, and underused quirks. And those who did not make it, who could not keep up their fight, were being taken away from the public eye to where their families could say their final goodbyes in peace.
"Todoroki," this same young woman began as she turned to the hero known by his given name, someone she had known since her days at U.A High School. "Have you ensured the safety of the building? There is no one else left inside, correct?" Turning her gaze back to the smoldering remains of what had once been a business complex, she grit her teeth slightly.
"Yes," the aforementioned male confirmed as he walked up behind his fellow peacekeeper., Uraraka assisting him in getting another injured civilian transferred into the care of professionals. "And Bakugou is assisting in making sure there are no villains left around the perimeter." These words calmed the female, and she visibly relaxed. The large black wings protruding from her exposed back disappeared, sparking out of sight.
"Besides," Uraraka chimed in, her persona as uplifted and bubbly as ever- how she managed to remain in such a state after fighting numerous villains and seeing things most people would not be able to bear intrigued her. And, if she were being honest, she was a bit envious. "You need to get checked out as well, or at least by Recovery Girl. Those villains really focused their fire on you, literally. I know how fire affects you, Raiu,"
"I'll be fine, but thank you, Uravity." Waving her hand dismissively and addressing her by her hero name rather than her family name, the female dismissed any notion of needing assistance. "You two should go rendezvous with the others and get status reports. This was a rather large moment for us, and I can't help but believe that there was something that we did not see. Call it intuition, but..." She trailed off, giving a small motion with her hand to emphasize her point. She felt that whatever had just happened was not the end of their battle, not by a long shot.
If the other heroes were to be honest, many of them had the same intuition at the blonde woman. After everything that had been occurring as of late, this battle seemed too easy. Yes, many people and heroes had been severely injured and experienced some very difficult opponents, but they were weak compared to some of the monsters that they had been tasked with facing as of late. This was too easy, almost as if they were simply the minions for the final boss battle that they would have to fight their way through if they wanted to survive.
As her two comrades separated from her side and went to their respective positions, with Todoroki following public officers with the intent of assisting in moving a villain to their vehicle and Uraraka hurrying over to where Iida was doing his job, the woman relaxed more. Her name was Raiu Munakata, or better known as Impundulu, a lightning bird of legend- a sign of bad luck. She had a particular weakness to fire, as the heat restricted her ability to draw breath and hindered her flight. It was common practice now for her to require at least a breath of pure oxygen after a battle- after all, these days she very rarely got involved in battles where the villain did not know her weakness and use it to their ability- and nine times out of ten, her partner would see to it himself that she got it.
"Raiu!" A rough, curt voice cut through her thoughts. Speak of the devil, and he shall appear. Snapping out of her trance, Raiu looked to her left just in time to see Katsuki Bakugou, her partner, stomping toward her. The look on his face could only be described as frustrated, as if he were being forced to approach her, as if she were only a menial chore. Of course, Raiu knew that this was his default look, but that understanding changed nothing of its appearance.
Taking a mental note of Bakugou's appearance, Raiu took one step closer to the blonde male decorated in green, orange, and black. He looked horrible, as if he had taken one mean shot to the face. He had a very deep laceration underneath his left eye- superficial bleeding, of course, but it seemed to be rather deep. She would have to look at that first. "Are you insane? Why the hell did you run in like that? We told you to stick to the air, where you thrive the best. I swear, you're begging to get killed!"
Sighing, Raiu took Bakugou's chin in her grasp and turned it to the left, allowing herself to get a better look at his injury. Paying no heed to his struggling, she wiped the blood away, eliciting a hiss from between his lips. "He had a child in his hold, and from what I saw, everyone else was preoccupied with other villains. Nobody would be able to get to them, except for me. Now, shut up and let me look." The two fell into silence for a moment, before Raiu mumbled something under her breath.
"You bastard. You're going to need Recovery Girl here soon. It's deep, you may need stitches. I'll patch it up for now, but there's nothing else I can really do. I don't having a healing quirk like she does." Releasing him, she watched as Bakugou rubbed his jaw, not realizing until then how tight her grip truly was. Mumbling an apology, she put her hands on her hips before re-materializing her wings. Using this to her advantage, she pulled him towards her and briefly pressed her lips to his, hiding this interaction from the press with the large feathered appendages.
Releasing him once again, she began to lead him over to where the others had begun to gather. "Alright, everyone. Let's give our mission details and get out of here quickly before we attract more villains. I'll start us off- Looks like we had a total of 9 villains to deal with today, three of which were high class. Unfortunately, this means that those three were the ones who managed to pick out our weaknesses, but it also means that we're getting stronger day by day. We're working around their own villainous quirks and figuring out how we can use ours without playing into their hands. So, good job everyone." She offered the group a small, rare smile.
As she spoke, the paparazzi flashed around them, all trying to get an audio recording of their classified meeting. They had questions, wanted statements and interviews, and would not stop at anything to get what they wanted to increase their views and popularity. In a way, they themselves were villains as well. Ruthless, cunning monsters of the media. Just as despicable, self-preservationists that would do anything for a scoop.
"We lost people, three of them. But that also means we saved 35 who sustained minimal to no injuries," Bakugou spoke after receiving a sharp hit of "motivation" to the back, in the form of a lightning jolt from his girl. "Jeez, can you cut that shit out? That hurts, damn it!"
"Not until you learn to work like this on your own, Katsuki. Become a bit less self-centered and make me stop having to shock you, or face my voltage again." Giving him an innocent smile to accompany her cold words, Raiu focused once more on the group, listening to the next speaker.
CRASH!
A loud crashing sound shook the area around them, causing the paparazzi to scatter and duck for cover as buildings quaked and debris fell. Raiu had since pulled several towards the ground, extending her wings to offer as much protection to the group as she could spare.
At the same time, Bakugou remained close to his fiancé’s side, attempting to keep her nearby in his own form of protecting her. He’d practically thrown himself in front of her, his arm carefully keeping anything away from her middle, shoulders and torso protecting the rest of her.
"What the hell was that?" She heard Bakugou yell, over the sound of her abilities charging, preparing herself for a fight.
"We aren't alone anymore. It would seem as if the party is just getting started," came the cool tone of Todoroki's voice.
"Those bastards. I'll kill them all!"
"Wait!" A hand shot out, hitting his chest and stopping him. "Not yet, we need to see what it is that we're dealing with here. IIDA! Think you can run fast enough so that they can't see you?"
Looking out from her wings as the debris ceased its descent, she folded them carefully as she called out to the other.
