  frankly, halie has no clue how human fashion works. she's been wearing whatever idonea's given her, but a lot of these clothing are terribly stuffy and restrictive. she's fond of flowy materials that feel light as air against her skin as well as purple fabrics! it's her favourite colour, after all. halie is quite intrigued by some of the appliques and embroidery and is rather interested in trying some out for herself. she's especially curious about flowers, since the flowers on land look vastly different than the flora in the sea.

  halimede's naivety juxtaposed against the timelessness of her species is surely an irony in the most literal sense. that said, nymphs would agree that it's difficult to discern time when you live at the bottom of the ocean and halie is the youngest of fifty. she had forty-nine older sisters to look up to as a young fishling and about forty-five of them coddled her. the last five are perhaps the only reason halie has even a semblance of a moral code.
  
  despite the spoiling, halie didn't end up arrogant or presumptuous, likely because of her endless curiosity coupled with the deep mythos surrounding the mystical world. as a supposedly fabled species herself, halie was taught to respect, or more specifically, be respectful towards the unknown. after all, you are but a sardine in the jaws of the beings who made this world. whoever that may be. that said, respect does not disallow curiosity, and halie is filled with it. an insatiable thirst for exploration and adventure, fed by the myths of the world
  beyond her ocean-sized fishbowl. yes, she's not the always the brightest bulb in the room, but she knows much more than she lets on and she's always ready to learn more. perhaps it's this inquisitiveness that allows halie to act with as much fearlessness as she does, for better or for worse.
  
  her apathy to rejection makes for a sociable mermaid that is equal parts friendly as she is unsophisticated. there is a certain shamelessness to her habits that doesn't come off rough, but speaks loudly of her obliviousness to social cues and norms. you may call it adapting to new society (since, yes, fish rarely use sarcasm), but her obtuseness in social situations was present even when she was among her sisters. easily distracted and eccentric in a way that toes the line between endearing and plain annoying, halie's the type of girl you decide within the first few minutes of meeting her whether you can tolerate her or not. she's not everyone's cup of tea, but there is charm to her airheaded antics.

  there are several tales surrounding mermaids-- some that paint them as enchantresses who devour men for surrendering to temptation, others that revere them as powerful protectors of the sea and all who dwell within it. some hold truth, others are terribly exaggerated but the sea nymphs remain elusive and intangible to most creatures that reside above the waves.
  
  certainly, the sea nymphs thrive on these beliefs. they're a peaceful species, and to be a mythical creature is to be undisturbed. perhaps once upon a time, they might have shared a pool with landdwellers, but nowadays they have little care nor interaction with humans, save for the occasional daunting seafarer who soon learns to fear the sea.
  
  halimede is the last of the sea nymphs, born from seafoam a century or so after their existence had become nothing more than a myth passed down the generations. found by a brine pool and named accordingly, halie was raised as the youngest, sheltered daughter of the sea, brought up with a gentle hand that coddled her beyond necessity. no one had been expecting another, after all, but they loved her nonetheless.
  
  for as long as halie can remember, she and her sisters have remained separate from most other societies, their sole interactions and news from marine creatures who make passage through their territories. she has heard snippets of gossip about what the land dwellers have been doing, but never enough for her to glean anything interesting. they are a touchy subject, one that halie, despite all of her inquisitive nature, has found difficult to breach. all they tell her of humans are of the danger they represent and the cruelty they champion. monsters that hide their ruthlessness behind the shadow of a smile.

  growing up, halie was known for one thing: having an endless number of questions. her curiosity towards the world, both mystical and exoteric, was initially endearing and a trait her sisters encouraged. it was a move they would quickly come to regret, as the confused little fishling quickly developed into a slippery, reckless nuisance who made throwing caution to the wind her favourite past-time. does it come as any surprise to hear that halie is the fastest swimmer of all the mermaids?
  
  crossing the bounds of their territories became a common occurrence in halie's lifestyle, much to her sisters' concern and chagrin. no amount of nagging could stop her, despite their repeated emphasis on the dangers of the world beyond their waves. halie was quite certain, however, of the relative safety of the ocean. she was a daughter of the sea, after all, there was a limit to what the other residents could do about it without incurring the wrath of the tides.
  
  but safety was far from halie's priority, which was precisely what her sisters were worried about.
  
  for the most part, though, halie spent her first few "adventures" ooh-ahhing over the surrounding ocean, collecting anything interesting she found on her expeditions from pretty seashells to the rusted gold coins of lost treasure. her taste in collectables were quite specifically in things that sparkled and she amassed quite the collection throughout the years. she takes pride in her little riches despite her limited understanding of their purposes, though you'd have to give her credit for the extent of what she managed to discover through trial and error.

  There's not a citizen in the land who hasn't heard of their infamous chancellor, for Idonea's notoriety extends further than even the Prince's contentious reputation. A serial flirt and partygoer, Idonea is superficially painted as an irresponsible young woman, plopped into the head seat of Parliament by the fumbling hand of fate. She causes more stress to the conservative party than their actual day job, and understandably so. Idonea is socially competent and a charmer for sure, but she talks like she has nothing to hide -- who knows what she could spill? Even in Parliament, she doesn't abandon her playful demeanor; unorthodox everywhere she goes, especially in her job, Idonea's methods are innovative at best and offensive at worst. Her attempts at political decorum are painfully half-hearted, and she only gets away with her disregard for social customs because of her position.
  
  In reality, Idonea's reputation isn't completely wrong. She certainly does attend way too many parties held by some millionaire's third daughter, and spends too much time gossiping and flirting to be socially acceptable for a political figure such as herself. But even after hours of discourse, Idonea always leaves her fellow conversationalist with the feeling that they learned nothing about her at all. She's surprisingly enigmatic, knowing how to be sociable yet discreetly distant, and if her peers tapped into that aspect of her party-going ways, maybe her political success would make more sense to them. Her insincerity, decorated with blasé flirtations and small talk, only strikes you after the party's over.
  
  In Parliament, her persona is refined and put on full blast. She leans into her social competence and lazy charm and weaponizes it. For all the complaints issued about her unconventionality, Idonea is an effective chancellor, even if she does bypass official channels and does most of her work under the table. Idonea's playful sociability does well to disguise her machiavellian methods. She's unscrupulous, cunning, manipulative, disingenuous, and juxtaposed with her light-hearted exterior, the lengths Idonea is willing to so flippantly go to in jarring. She's socially competent, but not emotionally sensitive; she flirts like it's a game, leads people on with no intentions of seeing it through. But even so, Idonea is not cruel or ill-intentioned. She's not one with a bleeding heart, but she doesn't have a cold one either.
  
  Idonea's outward demeanor may conceal her inner vices rather well, but the latter muddles her true motivations even more so. She's machiavellian by nature, but not motive. She has no all-consuming ambitions, no hunger for power or money or even victory. Nothing drives her to be disloyal or cruel or acquisitive. Idonea's one true desire is to play the game and have fun -- not even to win. So when Aeneas fucks up, she stays there with him, because using her connections to get away without struggle is boring. When she's goaded into betraying her friendship in exchange for political power, Idonea laughs, and stays staunchly by the prince's side, for power is not as captivating as it sounds.   On the night of her birth, her parents take up residence on their manor's moonlit patio -- stars dripped onto the wood, the dark of night reflected in the seas. The moon is full, and pulls at the tides like a puppeteer at pulls at strings. They wait until their daughter bleeds from her mother's form, her cries drowned out by the crashing waves.
  
  Only the sea knows why the couple never went to the hospital. Why they had their daughter born to the sound of the ocean. Only the sea knows of the arcane relic, tucked within the underground treasury of the manor. Only the sea, and its ancient practitioner of magic, know the truth.

  The daughter was born into the infamous Zhao (兆) family, and though she would not be aware of her roots, she would grow just as cunning as her predecessors.
  
  The Zhaos had an ironclad monopoly over the kingdom's oil industry, with a successful enterprise that lent them a significant amount of control over the Thalassan economy -- even more so than the royal family. The king was too concerned with other matters to focus on grappling with the Zhao clan, but the queen, on the other hand? Vicious, control freak, greedy. There are many words to describe the woman under that porcelain mask, but few can express the sheer ire she felt towards the Zhao family. She watched as a nouveau riche business clan cornered her family -- a pristine, well-established lineage that had ruled the land since the birth of their kingdom; soon enough, the millennia-old monarchy would be overtaken by a couple whose fortune was amassed in only a single generation. There was no hand of providence that corralled the mortals that dared disturb fate, so the queen resolved to do something herself.
  
  A few weeks later, all the newspapers in the kingdom were painted with the tragic deaths of the Zhao couple. Murders, they proclaimed. Could the old aristocracy be next? They crooned their sorrows about the missing daughter -- most likely deceased as well. The management of the Zhao conglomerate will supposedly go to Mr. Zhao's brother.
  
  Well, it didn't. Two days later, the newspapers were bustling with the indictment of the elder Zhao brother and his own family. The senior Zhao was plagued with envy -- it is such a shame that his brother and his wife had to suffer at the hands of this criminal and his accomplices. He will be sent to death.
  
  (Under the cover of her impenetrable royal status, the queen sends assassins after the Zhao couple and has them plant evidence to get the rest of their family arrested for life. When they raid their manor, they discover the underground room and an innocuous artifact of foreign origin. They do not take much else, but they do take the artifact, locking it away in the royal treasury, as it is something never seen before in their lands. It remains there, forgotten for years. The queen reads the newspapers every morning, sadistic joy hidden under a false display of sympathy.)
  
  In a span of under a month, the entire Zhao clan was snuffed out -- either murdered, in prison, or awaiting execution. The royal family, offering their deepest grievances, absorbed the conglomerate into their central government, as there was no one left to take the helm.

  Unbeknownst to Thalassa, the daughter was not deceased as well.
  
  The man who found her will later recount the tale to her at least once a week, like a crazed priest delivering a sermon. He tells her of how he travelled to his second residence -- a beach house in Asiminero -- earlier that day because of a feeling. Of how he never slept that night, turning in his bed before heading to the kitchen for a cup of chamomile tea.
  
  It was there where he had a vision of sorts (this is where the daughter can't help but raise an eyebrow, but humans cannot say that they know any certainties of the universe, so she refuses to disprove his claim). A cold rush jolted up his spine, and all he saw was white, then the pitch black of night. He glanced up at the starless sky, eyes trailing from the full moon to its rays, reflected in the lapping waves. It's there that he sees her tiny form on the shoreline -- young still, and near dead, with creases for eyes.
  
  And then it's over, but he knows with an inhuman certainty that it's no hallucination. He rushes to the beach, runs until he feels the slow tide lap at his bare feet. It's like the daughter is a beacon, and he finds her instantly, taking the small baby back to his estate in the capital the next day. Raising her as his own.
  
  That man is The Most Honorable Lord Coeus Seymour, Defender of the Holy Scrolls of Thalassa. He is the head of the Seymour family -- one of the five old aristocratic families, one of the five who stand right next to the monarchy. Under his patronage, the daughter of the Zhao family, name lost to time, becomes Idonea Seymour. Idonea, derived from a goddess of the old religion -- the dying religion her father was raised on, the religion that birthed their kingdom. The religion he left out of scholarly cynicism, the religion he returned to after that fateful vision. Idonea, meaning "loved again."

  Idonea grows up as her father's only child and only companion. She is told early on of how her father's wife and son passed away during childbirth. How his attempts at a normal family were thwarted. Idonea is written in as the heir of the Seymour family, a choice that arouses protest and discontent from the more traditional of the upper class. Her father is unmoving, however. He does not fall to the chiding of others.
  
  Idonea's father is not the warmest or most affectionate of men, but he's a loving father and shows his care through subtler gestures. A natural scholar and an introspective man, Idonea's father decided that he would not treat his daughter as an inferior, but as a student and a peer. Their relationship is a free-flowing river of information; anything Idonea asks, her father answers to the best of his ability, and if he does not know, he urges her to discover for herself. He helped foster her curiosity and hunger for intellectual battles, and although he is significantly more reserved than Idonea grew to be, they share the same sharp eye and love for a good endgame. They may have a more unconventional father-daughter relationship, but they're closer than many others can claim to be.
  
  Idonea develops an inquisitive nature and the ability to think for herself, but she carries two lessons from her father, buried intrinsically in her persona. Number one: she learns that convention is an imaginary box that only ever constrains; and number two: she learns that knowledge is power.

  Idonea meets the crown prince when she is seven. Her father works regularly at the royal library, and when she joins him on that fateful summer day, she bumps into the prince in the castle's grand corridors. His hair looks to be sewn from gold, and Idonea immediately recognizes the royal family's patrician breeding. She can't quite remember her first impression of the prince, but she knows that they become fast friends, and their names grew attached to each other with an all too familiar conjunction.
  
  As the two of them grow up alongside each other, the divergence in their personalities grows far more apparent. Aeneas is an affable, joyous boy, but he's ignorant. Ignorant of how he comes off as cocky, ignorant of how others think, ignorant of how everyone approaches him like they love him because he's the prince.
  
  Idonea, on the other hand, grows up as a second-class daughter. Not by her father's treatment of her, but by that of the upper class. Her lineage is very clearly of another family, and the aristocracy's traditional views of bloodline and prestige do not agree with her existence. Idonea never cared for their opinions, but if there's anything she has learned from being the crown prince's best friend, and from hearing the whispers of his mother and other aristocrats, it's that people lie. People put up a false demeanor and do their workings under the table. Masks are the most well-worn accessories in their castle of marble and gold, and Idonea adopts her own rather quickly with ease.
  
  If she's to be particularly honest, this is where the peak of the prince's ignorance lies; he grew up in a position of the highest privilege, under the false assumption that everyone loves him. The entire world faces him everyday with their own porcelain masks, and the prince knows nothing else. To him, the cold, lifeless white and grays of pretenses are genuine, flushed with color and love. To him, every kind word spared toward him is a word from the heart. No amount of schooling can save him from his crippling mindset. But Idonea has never entertained the prospect of being seen as a god, and she attributes that to why the crown prince is blind and she isn't.

  As they advance through their adolescence together, Idonea watches Aeneas fumble along in his princely arrogance while the mind-numbing, sugar-sweet taste of deceit grows all the more familiar to her. She mentions it to him many times in off-hand comments, but he doesn't see the issue. "What's so wrong with being honest?" he answers with childlike bravado. "I'm just being real, and people love what I say."
  
  It's here where Idonea rolls her eyes. "Not everyone," she says.
  
  Aeneas would stare at her blankly, like he couldn't fathom the idea of people disliking him. "Well even if that were the case --" he would entertain Idonea's statements, even if he thought they were ludicrous, and while Idonea sometimes couldn't help but bemoan her friend's ignorance, she did appreciate it "-- why should I stop anyway?"
  
  Idonea can't say no to that. Afterwards, they ask the head chef for pastries, and Aeneas tries to show off by eating three of them at once.
  
  As they graduate and begin to settle into adulthood, Idonea has many approach her in her bid for political success. Many who accuse her of faking her friendship, faking everything for power. Many who wish to join her. Idonea does not think much of it; she simply laughs and moves on.
  
  Frankly, their logic isn't unfounded. But preying on the prince is the easiest, most predictable thing, isn't it? Every time someone approaches her about it, Idonea hides her mouth under her champagne glass and chuckles. Perhaps one day, someone will see that she simply doesn't care. She doesn't need to falsify all her relationships to win, nor does she want to. Not every connection she makes is something she desires to wield for power. Not every game needs to be cold and manipulative; in fact, none of them should be, for a lifeless game is work, not a game.   as the only son of the ruling family, aeneas grew up extraordinarily spoiled. fun-loving and most definitely irresponsible, aeneas is usually harmless, spending his time partying and enjoying life while his mother handles the reins of his kingdom. though he is far from malicious and is typically well-meaning, his selfish nature, inconsideration, and above all, complete ignorance of what he is doing wrong mars many of the positive qualities he possesses. all those around him kiss at his feet, before turning around when he's gone and throwing foul insults about their prince to the wind.
