  The sun was unrelenting, summer air sweltering and thick with humidity. With the garage door left open, sweat trickles down the backs of four boys as they pour heart and soul into their instruments. Once the last song comes to an end they scramble inside, relishing in the cool air. They praise one another for their sound, all agreeing to meet up again next week. THE STORYTELLER pauses and grins, “We’re going to make it big.”
  
  Reno, Nevada. December 2016.
  The wind howls outside, blanketing the dirt and barren maple trees with bitter snow. With the windows shut tight and a fire crackling with warmth, four boys huddle together on the living room floor. They talk about everything and nothing all at once, hours passing by. What did they want to do? Who did they want to be? Would they still be friends after graduation? THE FIRECRACKER hesitates before clearing his throat, “Let’s start a band.”
  
  Los Angeles, California. March 2022.
  THE STORYTELLER was right. They were going to make it big. The band makes their move to the City of Angels, but problems with their bassist begin to arise. THE SNAKE happens to see a video of a small town band from Reno and formulates a plan, reaching out to THE DESERTER to recruit him. He declines, but eventually THE RELIABLE convinces his friend to chase his dreams and six months later THE DESERTER is on a bus to Los Angeles.
  
  Reno, Nevada. November 2022.
  With his lover and bassist gone, THE FIRECRACKER is heartbroken. The band crumbles and no matter what THE HEIR does, it can’t be fixed. The three of them drift apart and go their separate ways, lives turning a dull shade of gray without the music and passion they’d all held dear for the last six years. THE RELIABLE stays in touch with his friend in Los Angeles, but the rest of the band is unaware of his influence on THE DESERTER’s decision.
  
  Los Angeles, California. October 2023.
  It happens out of the blue. Something stirs in THE FIRECRACKER and he demands the band get back together. They arrived in the city three weeks ago, unprepared but full of hope and determination. Meanwhile, THE STORYTELLER’s words continue to ring true as the band soars to new heights. They fight tooth and nail everyday to earn recognition, never a moment for doubt as they strive for greatness and play their music for anyone who will listen.
  
  
  
  In the heart of the City of Angels, a twist of fate will bring together two bands, eight beating hearts, and change their lives as they know it forever. THE HEIR has considered THE DESERTER to be a close friend and when he left, it felt like a betrayal. He became at odds with THE RELIABLE and his nonchalant response to the whole situation. What really solidified that everything was falling apart, however, was THE FIRECRACKER pushing him away. It was what hurt the most. He was skeptical when talks of reviving the band came up, but after welcoming THE BABY not only into the band, but his home, there was no more denying it. This was his last chance.

  On the surface level, Wren is a seemingly uncontrollable ball of restless energy. He is constantly itching to get his hands on something and can be easily swayed to participate in 3am adventures to the Walmart two miles away. He cares deeply about others and what they have to say, but his attention span is painfully short. This can sometimes cause Wren to come off as rude as he fidgets or starts multitasking while someone's requiring his attention. He loves to laugh and make others smile. A great lover of memes and stupid jokes. Wren is also very impressionable, quick to indulge himself, and a bit of an adrenaline junkie. He is essentially a human ferret.
  
  More than that, Wren is deeply troubled. He trusts too easily and allows himself to be taken advantage of. He has little to no self respect and he is willing to do just about anything for money. This isn't to say that Wren is unaware of his faults and vices, in fact he is sharper than most people take him for. He knows how to hide his demons. It is simply that he lacks control on a greater scale and has fallen so far, he does not know how to pick himself back up. Wren is creative soul and has a deep appreciation for the world around him.   Born in Portland, Oregon, little Wren grew up in a low income household spending his days running around the mobile home he lived in. Wren was a handful as a child, always bursting with energy with little ability to focus on one thing at a time. In elementary school, his teachers suggested that Wren may have ADHD. It wasn't late until seventh grade that he was officially diagnosed with both ADHD and Dyslexia. His school counselor suggested a number of creative outlets for Wren to cipher his energy through, such as sports or music. When he decided on learning an instrument, a non-profit organization helped him acquire his first bass guitar. A slightly used Rickenbacker had become the second love of his life. He constantly wanted to hold her, take care of her, read her bedtime stories. When she was diagnosed with degenerative hearing loss at a young age, Wren split his time dedicated to music and started learning sign language in preparation for the future.   the first part of life

  
  Alec grew up with absent parents, not because they wanted to, but because his mother was constantly ill, in and out of the hospital for long periods of time. His father worked multiple jobs to cover medical bills and keep a roof over their head.
  
  Many years of his early childhood were spent at the hospital with his mother, no extended family to watch over him and his father unable to pay for any kind of child care on top of their ever growing bills. Ever the charmer, even as a child, the nurses didn't mind him always hanging around.

  In middle school, Alec started spending more time in his empty apartment than at the hospital with his mother. He learned to fend for himself with the entertainment of cable television and frozen dinners. Though he wasn't particularly interested in any subjects at school, his Music Teacher took an interest in him when he noticed Alec took to music like a fish in water. He invited Alec to use his classroom after school whenever he wanted just to play around with the instruments he had, thus growing his fascination with guitars. The end of his middle school years was also when he met THE HEIR, who was what would become his first true friend.

  The beginning of high school also brought upon the death of his mother, which threw both Alec and his father through a rough spell. His father picked up drinking, and though he was home more often now he'd lock himself away in his bedroom, barely coming out to even eat. Alec felt an anger towards himself for not visiting his mother more, and took to taking that anger out on others violently. The few adults in his life, mostly teachers, were concerned where this new anger would take him.
  
  Then THE HEIR introduced him to THE RELIABLE and THE DESERTER. Having real friends with similar interests to his helped him find an outlet other than aggression. Music became more of a passion for him during this time, as well as the need to make a name for himself in order to feel like he could make his mother proud.
  
  That December day in 2016 where he hesitantly asked his friends to start a band that he was so sure would succeed would be forever engraved in his heart. Around the same time, he and THE DESERTER realized there was more between them than just friendship, and Alec felt like he could face anything with his band by his side.
  
  He still doesn't understand where it all went wrong. Why THE DESERTER left not just him, but their band, why they all drifted away so easily, or what he could have done differently. But he knows one thing: they were still a damn good band. LA may be his last shot, but he'll die trying before he lets it all fall apart again.

  Throughout elementary school, Kai's primary home was his dad's cheap 1-bedroom apartment that was a five minute walk from the beach. To most, this would sound like harsh living, but to a 10 year-old boy, it was a dream. Kai lived for the beach. He'd count down the minutes until the bell rang every Friday, knowing that he and his parents would go to the pier and eat pizza. A tradition his parents decided would help their son know that they were both there for him, and each other. Drives to school were filled with legends like nirvana, evanescence, metallica, and other rock bands blaring through the cheap speakers of his dad's beat-up truck. It was his dad who taught him how to play the bass, since that was the instrument he played in the rag-tag band he and his high school friends started. The young dad loved sharing his interests, and his son wanted nothing more than to be just like him.   The summer of 2012 was when the rug was pulled from under him. What would mark the end of elementary school, and the start of a new beginning, would instead shape itself into being the everlasting memory of Christopher's father's death. Everything after that was hard to recall for the eleven year old, who would from then on go by Kai and only Kai. The pre-teen was numb, especially after her mother insisted that they both move to Reno where they would be closer to his maternal grandparents. Despite the numbness he felt, he grew very protective of his mother, and the memory of his father. Somber sounds of the late dad's bass guitar thrummed through the walls of their home almost nightly, playing his dad's favorite songs as if they'd bring him to life again.
  
  Middle school in Reno was when he decided to try and form a band with his classmates. However, they never stuck. None of them felt like his dad's band did. No one could play their instruments right, and if they did, none of them seemed to care. This often left Kai irritated, not willing to come to terms with the fact that he cannot resurrect the dead, nor can he expect his friends to achieve the impossible. Through this desperate search for other musically inclined people, he met THE HEIR.   Freshman year. The year THE HEIR introduced him to THE FIRECRACKER. Kai had become much more introverted after the loss of his father, deciding to focus his time on his music and his studies. His grief dragged him inward, while THE FIRECRACKER's made him explode on others. THE HEIR respected Kai's aloof nature, leaning into it rather than trying to push Kai out. Meanwhile, THE FIRECRACKER couldn't help but thaw the icey shield the bassist build for himself, thanks to his sheer silliness and determined nature. The three boys helped each other, making music and bonding over jam-sessions. Despite this apparent bond, Kai knew that THE FIRECRACKER and THE HEIR would always be closer to each other than he ever would. After all, he couldn't contend with the advantage of time. It left the bassist feeling a confusing sense of jealousy.
  
  A year would pass and what was once confusing became abundantly clear. Kai had feelings for THE FIRECRACKER, and somehow, THE FIRECRACKER miraculously felt the same. Everything was perfect, especially now that Kai had finally found the band he had yearned for for so many years. Unfortunately, time proved to not be on his side. Dreams of success were smothered by gigs with no audiences, and odd-job shows that left the bassist feeling unfulfilled. It was a difficult and conflicting time, because he knew that he was meant for more than this. All of them were. Yet, no one seemed to feel the same. How could THE FIRECRACKER be so optimistic when it was clear they were heading nowhere? THE RELIABLE was the only one who listened to his concerns. Kai wouldn't dare tell THE FIRECRACKER his feelings, for fear that it would shatter his heart. He had already been through enough, and Kai loved him too much to drag him down with his pessimism.
  
  Secrets led to distance, and eventually, one fateful call led Kai to make a decision that he still wonders was the right choice. He released THE FIRECRACKER from the chains of their relationship, and said a bitter goodbye to his former friends. His heart aches at the loss, but Kai knows that he cannot have it all.   Taro in Japanese means eldest son, a fitting name for Taro Morita, the first-born child in a first generation Japanese-american family.
  From the moment he was born, Taro’s world was rampant with sound. Loud, and ever-changing. Arguments between his parents formed the backdrop of his early memories while his baby brother wailed in the background, cradled in Taro’s arms as he hid in quieter corners of his apartment. Screams and door slams became his daily soundtrack, and the shrill laughter of other kids as they mocked the “unfamiliar” foods he’d bring to school. Even his thoughts were noisy, in rare moments of silence Taro found it difficult to breathe freely when his mind was thinking too loud. Sounds were ever-present and so Taro opted to drown out the constant noise with more noise.
  
  At a young age, music had already become a part of Taro’s life, an unwitting escape. headphones blasting and chopsticks drumming away to a beat. Drumming had become an unconscious habit, it was something he’d developed from fooling around with his family’s chopsticks and he found it soothing to drum to a steady rhythm. This new habit of his however, was not what his parents wanted. Constantly scolded for breaking chopsticks and making trouble at school, Taro felt like he was burdening his parents. They were already struggling with their unhealthy marriage and Taro felt like he was weighing them down more. His mother always told him to turn a blind eye to their arguments, “be a good brother, grow up well, be a better man than your father.” and especially, “don’t get angry.” to little Taro, being angry meant being like his father, soon Taro would soon learn the weight of all these words in his coming years.

  When Taro was 10, his youngest sibling was born, and an already raucous household became more chaotic. The arguments in the Morita family grew tenfold, their fighting came right through the thin walls of their much too small apartment, with too few rooms and now five residents— even the neighbours had complained.
  But it was only a few months after his sister was born when little Taro experienced an irrevocable change in his life. Taro’s father left, abandoning his family due to petty feuds— the man was fed up with the arguing and constant demands. Taro hated him for leaving, he had kicked, cried and screamed. The old man had left Taro and his mother with her three children, without even a farewell or a single note in his wake. The Morita family was crumbling but Taro had to bottle up his feelings for his mother’s sake and his two younger siblings as well.
  
  10 years old and already changing diapers, Taro ended up having to forego much of his childhood to help his mother with the household. “don’t be like your father, focus on your studies, take care of your siblings.” His mother’s words rang in his ear constantly, replacing the music in his head with a list of expectations he’d have to meet. Gone were the days of drumming on sidewalks. Chopsticks left behind for steel forks to fit in with the new world they lived in. Taro was expected to be the responsible older brother; always patient, always kind— a good role model for his siblings, a good student, a good son.

  Somewhere along the way taro managed to get a handle of all his responsibilities. How? by bottling up his emotions. (certified foolproof - taro) He became the responsible older brother that his mother wanted him to be, but it was a facade. Taro’s fingers itched to play again; during his few periods of free time, Taro would run to the music store down his street, greeting the lovely owner and rushing to practice playing the drums. His interest in drumming began to rekindle, and he soon found himself diving back into the world of music. Eventually he bought real drumsticks and began to buy drum kits as he saved up.
  
  The beat of his life took a pleasant turn when he crossed paths with a group of friends who shared his musical interests. Together they formed a tight-knit band, and their music became a form of therapy, a release for both himself and his friends. Taro found himself contributing not only rhythmically with his drumming skills, but also as an emotional crutch for his friends. Maintaining his image as a "cool guy" and a reliable, trustworthy friend became of paramount importance to Taro. He understood that his friends relied on him not just for his musical talent but also for his unwavering support. In their eyes, he was a rock that they could lean on in times of need, the one who could be trusted with their secrets.   Forming the band in 2016 was the greatest thing to happen in Taro Morita's life. But when they reunited years later in 2023, Taro has a new fear added on to his list of ever-growing anxious thoughts. Unfortunately for him, life had taken its toll on Taro. All those years of blasting his headphones and slamming on the drums came back to him in the form of a faint ringing. The telltale signs of early tinnitus had come to haunt him. A cruel irony that the very thing that once brought him peace was now threatening to steal away that same peace from him.
  
  Taro keeps this secret close to his chest, his love for his friends runs deep and he didn't want to burden them with his own worries. He knew that his tinnitus, while still in it's early stages, was a signal from his body that the needed to take better care of his hearing. So he began using musician's earplugs more often during practice sessions and performances, a precaution he hoped would stave off the progression of the condition. However, the fear of what could happen still lingers in his mind.   In Momo's group of friends and bandmates, he is a beacon of optimism and light. He is always energetic, always moving, and always looking towards the next best thing. Usually he is (annoyingly) cheerful and laidback. For someone so big and muscular, he is also a pushover and a people-pleaser at times, though he is working on finding his spine. With his normally dopey and smiley face, people write him off as one-dimensional and absent-minded, but those who really know Momo understand that he wishes to keep the peace within himself and his band. As the STORYTELLER, he understands his words can reach people if they come deep from within; during writing sessions, he takes himself to dark places and it can be hard on him at times. Maybe Momo compensates his own inner demons by being generally cheerful and friendly -- and some may say it is an act, but he genuinely loves and admires his friends and never hides it. He speaks of success and light constantly, and that very fire may have kept their spirits up and inspired them to move forward in their budding careers. Momo is a wonderful speaker and master of words, and he hopes to never disgrace the wishes of his bandmates.

  Nina Morozova

  Momo's older twin sister. The original lead singer and guitarist of the band. Brooding, edgy, but always meant well. Naive. Thought about her mother a lot and always tried to find things to fill the gap her mother's death left in her life. Always tried new makeup looks. Wanted to dye her hair black, but her father flipped out, so she kept it her natural color. Got tatted immediately on her 18th birthday.

  "Tata"

  Mikhail Morozov but called "Tata" of course by his son. Currently full-time Humanities/History professor at university. Tries to stay strong and steady for his son, who he has a great relationship with. Fervently supports Momo and keeps all the pictures of what he has been up to + social media postings of their band. Gets rather lonely but is grateful for the company of Motya, who he knows tried his best to save his daughter. Probably has a great relationship with all of the bandmates too.

  He was born minutes after his twin sister, Nina, on a Summer day in St. Petersburg. The family had a relatively normal start. His mother was from Kazakhstan, while his father was Russian, though they did not stay in the country long. His father was an esteemed professor at St. Petersburg State University, while his mother stayed home to care for two very demanding babies. This idyllic life eventually went agonizingly downhill when their mother caught an illness that she could never shake. Though family from Kazakhstan and Russia shuttled in and out of their home to keep up with her care, the illness took her in the end. Momo's earliest memories of his mother were of her small, malnourished body and pale chapped lips. Their father, pushing through the grief, felt the twins needed a present parent and a fresh start -- so when they were seven, they emigrated to America. Their father accepted a job part-time at another prestigious university in Phoenix, Arizona. They needed the sunshine. They settled into life easily in Arizona (thanks to their father), and Momo and Nina had an engaging environment growing up. They were in many extracurriculars together, and wherever Nina went, Momo followed. Especially to the music. She was a beautiful singer, and due to inheriting his father's master of languages, Momo was a beautiful lyricist. Their tradition every week was he come up with words, and she with music. When the band was formed, she was the lead singer, and he was behind the scenes cranking out lyrics every other week. It was bliss.

  18 - 21 years (TW: SU!C!DE)

  Nina started dating. Momo hated him. Everyone hated him. And when he did the unforgivable to her, she slowly faded from the front of the stage. He kept it inside, kept a brave face, but he despised himself for being unable to protect her. Momo and his father tried to help her. She said she had been wanting a cat since she was young, and Momo gifted her a black cat named "Motya" to lay in bed with her. It worked for a little while, and during that time, Momo hit the gym. He got into boxing. He got stronger, bigger, better than he ever was before. Everything was looking up, everything was returning back to normal -- and then Nina decided to end it all. Momo and his father found her body in bed one morning. He remembers shaking her to wake her up, and he remembers his father's hurried footsteps to phone 911. Everything else was a blur, a dissociative slideshow of monochrome and a funeral and black suits. No worries. The gym had been paying off. Momo hunted the guy down and now, he would be eating from a straw his entire life, but this is not something he has ever confessed to. Everyone knows probably, but they don't talk about it. After "recovering" from his grief, he returned to the garage where they all practiced and, with a sunny exterior, requested he be the new lead singer, guitarist, and lyricist.

  With that signature optimistic push from Momo, everyone found themselves in LA. He kept repeating it: we're going to make it big. Since the death of his sister, his lyrics have become more heartfelt and have touched crowds of thousands. He sees her sometimes, a crown of platinum blonde hair in the audience, or in the early morning she sits beside him while he puts pen to paper. He talks to her and tells her all the adventures they've been on and all the plans they're making. He has a lot of guilt for leaving his father in Phoenix (though his father encourages him to follow his dreams), and Momo calls him every day and sends him pictures through the mail every week of what they have been up to.
