• vibe check although he seems like your classic closed-off jerk, ren is actually a pretty sweet guy: preoccupation with death aside, he's caring and kind, with a massive soft side that people just don't tend to stick around long enough to see. when he's not getting into a fight (whether it's for a genuine protective reason or just to 'feel something'), he's gentle and laid back. the dark humour and morbid fascinations are what put people off, but ren's one of the nicest friends you can make-- he just likes to act like he's in a tim burton movie. on a more negative note, he tends to neglect himself in favour of looking after others, and doesn't seem to notice when he's spiralling.

  -ahahaha what do you call the opposite of daddy issues? basically, my entire childhood was a huge custody battle. my mum consistantly would try and manipulate me to be against my dad. when that didn't work she just trashed him constantly. there were times when i was genuinely afraid that i'd never see my dad again because of her. they had broken up when i was an infant, so my only memories of them together were when they were switching off who had me and their screaming matches. thankfully, my dad won full custody when i was 13 after my mum kept refusing to let me go back to my dads. she kept it up until my dad threatened to call the police since what she was doing was technically kidnapping. i stopped speaking to her regularly after we moved here and fully cut her off when i was 18. it was not a great time. love my dad to bits, though.

  -to start, i do feel really bad about this. i had an affair with a married man. i didn't even have feelings for him, not that having them would make it any better. but, i was bored and it was kind of exciting. he had kids and a wife, a nice house, the works. i was 19 and angry because i had just turned down my acceptance to the university of edinburgh, the only school i had applied to, because my dad seemed lonely. to be fair, the man i was with should not have cheated. but i knew what i was doing and was perfectly alright with the fact that he was married. i wasn't subtle either. i'd call and text him when i wanted. he would even buy me nice things, expensive things. i think that's what actually ended up getting him caught, all the calls, texts, and purchases he couldn't explain. now he doesn't see his kids anymore.

"has anybody ever tell you that you're no fun? geez ... fine. i nearly overdosed. that's why i'm here. i have - had a lsd addiction back at college and i was caught high up my ass by a professor when i didn't make it to his class or something. in a way it was a blessing i got caught, if i wasn't rushed to the hospital i don't think i'd still be around. buuut after that i got a slap on the wrist from authorities, got kicked out of college, got slapped AND kicked out by my folks back home, so it was sort of a give and take, y'know? i get to live in exchange for getting kicked out of my dream college, my dad hating my guts, and nearly becoming homeless. luckily nay still kept around her nokia - do you know how hard those things are to kill? like seriously i - right. sorry. anyway, all i needed to do was send her a text, backpack a little and hitch some rides, had to do a few favors if you know what i mean but here we are. living in spooky-scary oregon and working as a grocer and sometimes, if i'm lucky, babysitter. you happy now?"

"i mean maybe a little bit when it gets dark but who wouldn't be?"

"cant say i have but nay tells me all about them. she says she'd wave at them back when her hip didn't stop her from walking in the woods but - she's probably joking. i don't think she's joking about seeing them though."

"i mean yeah, i love a good beach day, cant say i always enjoy it. fishes like to nibble at my feet if i stay in for too long."

did you see them while you were there?

"... no? are you telling me there's someone or something there? well shit. maybe those weren't fishes after all. i'll be sure to look deeper into the water next time."

"duh."

why?

"not only does nay tell the weirdest stories about this place but i also grew up being warned about the creatures that go bump in the night. have you heard about a manananggal? it's the stuff of nightmares."

"i gotta be honest with you, i'm relatively new here compared to everyone else but, yeah. of course i've experienced some weird shit that even bill nye cant explain. sometimes i even think twice before taking a night shift at the grocery."

"of course not! i'm not some baby. i do lock my door and windows though, sometimes i have to check twice but, i always manage to keep them all locked eventually."

"... there are days. i try not to think about it."

"i don't know. is it stupid that i sometimes resort back to faith? i keep a rosary in my pocket, even if i don't think it'll do jack shit."
