It's been a while since I've hosted a truly detailed role play, so I'm just gonna do a canon ball into cold waters and race to see if I can touch the bottom and surface again in just one breath. Here I go! *splash!*

Torrent is a mind-bending mystery story set in 1937 America. Most of the middle class had been decimated by the Great Depression and the lowest income families are trying to find any way possible to stay warm during the winter. President Roosevelt continues to battle the Supreme Court over legislation included his "New Deal", and the world faces rising tensions as fascism and communism spread through Western Europe and East Asia. New ideas take hold of societies and ideological change steamrolls over the stagnant status quo. Scientists are excited, tycoons guard their coffe rs, leaders are paranoid, and hard working men can only spin in circles as the enigma that has become the world stage blurs around them.

But while the universe seems to be raveled in endless chaos, one man's place in life is clear and his mind is grounded; yet thirstily ambitious. As a psychiatrist, Dr. Thomas D. Evenway has always been fascinated by the seemingly limitless potential of the human mind. One can poke and prod all day at a dissected brain in a lab, but it means nothing without the attachment and control of the soul. And when a brain has a soul, it is capable of astounding--he would dare say ineffable--wonders. To study the phenomena that the mind can directly acquaint itself to, Dr. Evenway founded a special institute for the parapsychologically gifted; or, simply put, psychics. This institution, McKinley Hall, as it came to be known, was located well outside Chicago, Illinois; far from the pesky noses of the curious and critical. It's locale was meant to provide a sense of peace and security to both the scientists under Evenway's employment and the volunteer residents under their care and study.

In the cold winter of '37, Dr. Evenway declared he and his team had made incredible breakthroughs in several areas of parapsychology, claiming that psychic phenomena aren't "hoaxes" or the stuff of pure fiction. Curious as to whether or not there is a kernel of truth to Evenway's claims, five major newspapers have sent their top-notched and most skilled reporters to McKinley Hall. If the good doctor can articulate his findings and prove to the reporters that he isn't another pseudoscience quack, perhaps the world may find a pleasant distraction from the plaguing troubles massing all around... or maybe their findings will only add to everyone's fear and confusion.

In this role play, you'll take the reigns of one of five journalists that have been "pre-built" specifically for this story. -- Now, I know what you're thinking, "Why can't I make my own character, sensei?" Because this will turn out to be a mystery game (sort of like Clue) and each of the main characters will have special traits that can aide the group in specific situations, or will have had experiences that will allow them unique insight into certain puzzles. Their pre-defined personalities will also ensure an easy mesh among the cast for smooth dialogue scenes and even add a dash of challenge to dramatic moments.

The reporters will all arrive at McKinley Hall on the same day, at around the same time. This will start everyone together and orient the cast in an easy direction going-in. Afterward, the scenes of the RP will be "episodic"; meaning that the actions your character can take are ultimately limited to being confined by multiple start and end points, between which points the plot is then unraveled like a knitted tapestry. Throughout the role play, I'll continuously update how much time (counted in posts) is remaining before the episode needs to be wrapped up; at which time, I'll reveal information that either concludes a plot point or starts a new one (or both!).

More details about how I'll control the advancement of the plot will be explained in the OOC thread if this garners enough interest. Same goes for the summaries and bios of the five journalists, as well as the other main characters.

Simplified hook:

You play as one of five respected journalists sent in by your newspaper company to learn whether or not a pseudoscientist can prove that psychic phenomena isn't the stuff of tall tales. During your stay at the McKinley Hall Institute for the Gifted, you bare witness to the strangest events in between your interviews with the enigma that is Dr. Evenway. It's clear from your restricted access to areas and information that there is more going on at McKinley than meets the eye, leading you and your skeptical peers to dig deeper into many mysteries and puzzles that make up a much larger picture. You'll meet interesting residents and hear their stories, why they volunteered as a subject for Evenway's ambitious research; stumble across cryptic documents, giving insight into the depth of the experimentation; and overhear hushed conversations between shady characters, hinting at conspiracy and closely held secrets.

Will this be your biggest scoop yet, or a delusional rant on page six?

I'll start working on some OOC posts and formatting then. Having at least three interested was my goal before pressing too far into the planning, but I'll wait for maybe one more before putting up anything. Thanks for the interest so far, everyone. :)

And I.

Looks like you're full now, but if you end up being short a player send me a message.

@WinterSoul,

You were my first five, so please take a look at the RP here. I'm still adding in a few details about the journalists (skills and traits, etc.), so please stick with me as I wrap things up. You can go ahead and start using the OOC tab if you want to discuss the story and ask questions.

@Church418, since you're my runner-up, go ahead and take a look as well, in case one of the five drop out.
