The loud thudding against the wooden door woke the princess from her tired sleep. The grumbled a few choice words before pulling the sheets off of her and moving to the window in her bedroom, pulling the curtain to reveal daylight. Her blonde hair was a mess of tangles from tossing and turning while she slept, drool on her chin and her nightgown wrinkled. If anyone saw her like this they would challenge her word as a princess. Another loud thudding hit against the door and she rolled her eyes, “I will be down shortly!” She said, loudly enough for the guards on the other side to hear her. She hated mornings. Amara had always wanted to be the type of princess who woke up with the sun, surrounded by singing birds and her hair always perfect for the day, but she was far from that idea.

It didn’t take but a few minutes for the princess to dress and make herself presentable. Her wrinkled nightgown was replaced with a pale green colored dress, her face washed and now tinted with light powder and painted lips and her hair combed and relaxed down her back and shoulders. Her father had called for an early breakfast this morning and rumors were already spreading around the castle of what he might be wanting to tell her. Was it another suitor he had for her to meet, hoping she would fancy one and accept their marriage proposal before she was out of the marrying age? Or perhaps it was about the peace treaties that needed attention or whatever trip he would soon be leaving for again.

Amara wasn’t sure, but she always tried to guess. Typically her duties as a princess were a few in the same so it was easy to see what he might be scolding her about next. She loved her father, truly, and she loved her kingdom. Amara had been raised knowing that someday she would rule her country and even as a young girl she took pride in this. She studying hard, she interacted with the counsel, she stepped up at an early age and even made sure to have good rapport with her people of the nearby villages. She wasn’t, however, keen on the idea that she had to marry a man in order to someday rule.

She met several men- many at parties and balls, some who would reach out to her and others her father would set her up with. It didn’t matter how she knew them, they all wanted the same thing: her power. None seemed to ask much about her, only eager to know what riches, land and power they would get by marrying her. She had learned how to quickly turn them away before getting too invested in them just by how they treated her in the first morning of their arrival. Her father found it quite aggravating. While he loved his eldest daughter and wanted her to find love, he was growing weary that she was getting to an age where men would mostly be married already and was afraid his kingdom would have no ruler without Amara wed. She knew his worries were valid, but it didn’t help Amara choose a husband any easier.

After opening her door, seeing the three men standing outside patiently waiting for their princess, she smiled widely and looked at each of them. “Good morning,” she said, closing the door behind her as she greeted each of them. Finally her eyes settled on the one she saw more often than not- Booker. Her smile softened at this knight, her eyes lighting in amusement. He was much more than just her knight, over the years he had grown to be her friend. Since his arrival at the castle her mother assigned him to be her own personal knight. Of course as children this mostly meant they played together, and she was happy to have a new friend. As they grew older their relationship had to change a bit, but they remained close friends. He had been there through most of her life, hardly missing a day. Even when he didn’t work she seemed to find him around the castle and they’d go off on a silly adventure if she could convince him of it. She cared a lot about him, more than she would ever be allowed to admit aloud.

As she began walking beside him, the other two staying behind to guard her room as always, she glanced towards him. “What do you think the big news will be today?” She asked, always making it a game on their walk to the dining room. “I bet it’s about him visiting the Stone Kingdom this month- he has been talking about it for a few weeks now but hasn’t had time to visit yet.”
