Realistic or Modern The Placebo Effect

Last night had been a blissful one. Tori had been over to see his parents, which was a rare occurrence. Seeing as how his Visionary identity was unknown to them, he was hard-pressed to find time to see any kind of family. He had stayed the night in his old room, and was overcome with the nostalgia that followed. He remembered what it was like, being a normal person with a normal life.

Then suddenly, this happened. No explanation, just sudden abilities. He had pulled together his friends and together they had created something amazing. Tori didn't regret a single moment of it. Leaving the base had been a foolish move, but since nothing had happened, Tori supposed it had been fine.

He pulled into the parking lot of a dilapidated apartment building and, getting out of the car, pressed his hand against the nearest brick wall. There was silence for a moment, then a buzz beneath his fingertips triggered a rumbling noise that came from the apartment. Opening the front door, he was faced with elevator, which he entered. He pressed the single button, and the elevator descended quickly.

The lift jolted to a stop, and Tori made a mental note to try and fix that. The door opened, and he stepped into what appeared to be a five-star hotel. While there were no windows, the space was wide and yet cozy. A kitchen was on the far left of the room, and several seating options across from it. Tori went to his right, where there was a hallway with several doors lining it. He adjusted the bag he had slung across his shoulder and opened the first door on his left, which was his room. He had kept it simple, and yet well-furnished. Flinging the bag onto his bed, he sat down at the desk and pressed a button on the side. A soft beep rang out across the speakers that lined the facility.

"Hey guys, I'm back. I hope you didn't have too much fun last night." Tori chuckled through the speakers. "Now, back to work. Meet me in the training room in... Two minutes. No exceptions."

Jake had been awake for hours. Didn't get much sleep anymore. Every time he lay down his mind began to race. The last couple of months had seen Jake join this band of misfits and fight against all manner of evil, and while Jake never showed it, it was beginning to take its toll. The others always seemed so full of confidence, which Jake had tried to match but his heart just wasn't in it. Running head-first into danger for random strangers just didn't seem sane to him. After all what had they ever done for him. But for now he did what the team needed him to do. Despite all this they were his family and probably the only ones on the planet like him. Maybe they felt the same way he did, maybe not.

As these thoughts ran through Jakes head the intercom beeped. Their fearless leader had returned. Jake sighed and rolled straight out of bed onto the floor. Before he hit the floor it opened up into a purple gate way that deposited him right way up on the other side of the room next to his cupboard. He pulled out the long black cloak and cowl that mask that served as his costume and got dressed. He took a moment to look into the mirror. "Just make it through today." With that he turned and opened another gateway straight to the training room. He was the first to arrive. On account of the no need for doors. He simply nodded to Tori before pulling his mask on.

Theo was never one to sleep often. Her mind was always buzzing about something, and she ended up looking for whatever she could to gain more insight into... well, anything she felt like. Sometimes she'd stay up late trying to learn new languages, other times, she looked into music theory. Even science was a big part of her daily routine, constantly looking to build or fix things as well as conduct experiments on every whim. This time, she'd been up re-teaching herself the Instrumental case in Russian, re-learning how to write and properly conjugate verbs and objects.

The intercom buzzed over head, and she knew she'd have to be out soon. Fixing her glasses on her nose, she slipped on a new shirt, slipped into jeans, and headed down to the training room. Sure, she might no be able to fight with her glasses, but she was better at deflecting things when she could actually see them. So, she kept them on her face, shuffling quickly through the halls.

"Good to see you, Tori. How was your night, Jake?" She always felt the need to make sure everyone was doing okay. Well, as long as everyone didn't include herself. Those problems were simply something she preferred not to deal with.

Adriana, much like the rest of their motley group, rarely got a good night’s sleep. She struggled to tune out the noises of people breathing or humming; an issue which she’d have to work out at some point. She was already awake when she heard the elevator come down. With a small groan she got out of her bed and pulled on some yoga pants and a t-shirt, already up by the time Tori pressed the intercom. Grabbing an energy bar that was stashed in the table by her bed she made her way down to the training room, wrinkling her nose as the smell of sour milk from the kitchen caught her.

She sighed as she diverted to the kitchen, pouring the substance down the drain and binning the remains of her energy bar at the same time. She always seemed to be the one in charge of throwing away gone-off food, although this was probably because she was usually the only one who realised they were gone off. Addi lazily tied her hair up into a ponytail and stretched her neck as she once again made her way to the training room; getting ready for the day.

“We need more milk.” Addi announced as she made her way to the others. “So, what do you have in store for us today Tor?”

"Good to see you. Hopefully the others will be joining us soon." Tori brought up a panel on the wall, closing the door. The others would still be able to enter, as he hadn't locked it.

"Evil never rests, right? Then neither can we. I've got a funny feeling that something big is coming, which means working as a team is even more important." Tori clicked a few more buttons, and the room's walls began to shimmer. The room itself was rather large, being both wide and long, almost like a football stadium. Those government grants certainly came in helpful in the construction of this place. Blocks and panels began to rise from the floor, creating levels, and hatches opened high on the walls and on the ceiling.

"Your goal is to press the five buttons hidden around here." Immediately, the light dimmed, and the room shifted into forest scene, complete with trees and thick foliage. None of it was real, but it looked and felt as if it was. Out of the panels that had opened came gun-like fixtures, and they began to scan the area.

"Just foam pellets today. If you get hit, you're out for fifteen seconds. But try to get through this without alerting any guns. And please don't destroy them." Tori glanced accusingly toward Jake.

Tori looked down at his watch, pausing for a moment. "Start... Now."

// In case you're confused, this large area has transformed into a forest-like area. Don't question how, because it's science. These buttons you need to press are hidden, so don't make your characters find them right away. The guns are motion activated, and you may make them hit your character if you want.

Jake looked at the guns swiveling back and forth, looked up at the canopy of leaves above him the opened a portal and stepped through onto one of the thickest branches and squatted down. He looked around sure that Tori would have put one up here. One of the closer turrets swung around and started launching small pellets towards him. Jake waved his hand dismissively and a portal appeared swallowed the pellets and deposited them on the ground.
