Sincere to a fault
Carina Schreier
Ocean breeze, how have I missed you.

From her meeting with Chris to the steps she took to get inside the boat, they all felt so…ethereal. Despite everything that had happened, all the lives that had been lost, all the joy shared by her prisonmates, all the pain coming from her arm, it all just felt like some sort of dream. Surely, things couldn’t be this simple, this must’ve all been a figment of her imagination…right? And yet, once Carina took her seat on the boat, a familiar scent dragged her back to reality: The smell of the ocean. Such an indistinguishable aroma, for a moment it felt like she could simply close her eyes and imagine herself back at home. She could barely tell when the boat’s engines fired up, she didn’t notice the jail progressively getting smaller and smaller and she didn’t listen to a single word spoken by the female soldier. Every ounce of attention Carina could spare had all been taken hostage by the ocean on which they sailed. They had really done it. They were free.

The charming spell that the sea had casted upon her was suddenly cut short by the feeling of cold salty water lightly splashing up against her face. Slowly, her mind drifted towards the person sitting by her side: Christoph. Suddenly, her hand rose from her lap and went straight for her partner’s cheek, giving it a firm pinch. A quick laugh escaped her lips as she let go of him. “You feel real enough to me, I guess neither of us are sleeping, huh?” She sighed with relief, though soon after her lax expression became a pure somber one. “I know what you’re thinking. This would’ve never happened had it not been for me. There’s no way I can simply ask for your forgiveness, nor do I expect you to give it up so easily. I get it, I fucked up, I fucked US up. We barely got lucky.” A shot of pain suddenly went up her arm, forcing a grunt out of her before she could continue. “Listen, despite everything, I don’t trust these guys. It feels like we’re jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire, and these guys are the flames. But, seeing how we got into this mess because of me, I’ll leave it up to you to decide what we do now that we’re out.” She paused, waiting for her partner to respond.

While waiting for an answer, Carina let her eyes wander around the boat. She was ecstatic to see that all her cellmates had made it out alive. While she definitely wanted to check up on them and mingle the time away, her reunion with Chris was long overdue, she needed to set things straight before doing anything else. That also meant Carina would have to wait a bit before treating her arm’s wound. Luckily for her, the shot barely graced her, leaving behind a superficial burn. Speaking of which, she spared a moment to thank god that Lilia had gotten out alive, she owed her her life.

ZENRIAS TAIRA
The Forgiving Fiscal Agent

─── ⋆⋅ 𓇢𓆸 ⋅⋆ ───

For a moment, it looked as though Emilia's reaction would transcend words entirely. In a single stroke, contempt brushed over her face and her lips stretched wide, settling into a wolfish smile that did not quite reach the eyes. When they cracked open, he half expected a laugh to grate the air like knives against slate. Instead, in a single, subtle move, she had turned the tables. The air crackled with unspoken tension as that smile continued to play upon her lips, a facade that masked a more deadly mix of motives beneath the surface. Her eyes, however, betrayed a different story. There was a glint of something he knew all too well, something more profound—a lingering pain, a sense of betrayal at the hands of loved ones.

Maroon eyes narrowed, flickering in tandem with Emilia's guiding thumb. The subtle pressure of her nail against his tie, a seemingly innocuous gesture, spoke volumes. Driven into his chest, it felt as if it were a shard of ice, a tactile reminder of the delicate balance teetering between them. Her question cut through the air, treading the thin line between innocent inquiry and spiteful accusation. It left behind a bitter taste of indignation in his mouth. It wasn't just a query; it was yet another attempt, a mocking insinuation that clawed at his convictions and struck a nerve he hadn't expected to be exposed. His lips parted, laden with a twofold yearning—the desire to prove his sincerity and the burning need to rebuke her assertion that reconciliation was much more than a fool's gambit, if given the chance. But Emilia had already cut to the chase.

The bitter truth in her assessment of their newfound Mogul status reverberated through him. Born from the fallout of all he had known, it was all he could do to not show the rising, simmering despair on his face. The notion that his colleagues in the Ministry of Finance, those in whom he had once kept a pleasant enough ledger of camaraderie, would treat him now as they would a failed investment was a hard pill to swallow. He could almost hear the echoes of bureaucratic whispers branding him an economic saboteur; yet in a cruel twist of irony, Zenrias couldn't help but reflect on how, had he been found guilty of plain corruption rather than branded a Mogul, the outcomes might have been less dire. Emilia was right; Noniellian propaganda, a poison that had seeped into the roots of Floramante's liberal ideals, had effectively transformed his currency of Ministry goodwill and employment into rapidly depreciating assets. The value of his past hard work, his properties, charities and debt-free programs for those simple folk in his fiscal jurisdiction, now all seemed to wither away like chaff in the wind. In the midst of this grappling the question that weighed most heavily on Zenrias's heart emerged: could the same be said for his loved ones? Saddled with the curse of the Mogul stigma, he did not dare dismiss the haunting possibility that even his bonds to family might prove fractious, if not downright dead in the water in this treacherous new landscape. Not that he hadn't had reason to worry before; the violent aftermath of his investigation into the Viscontis over the years ensured a steady number of relatives refrain from seeking his company or decline to show at holiday gatherings, banquets, and events held at his residence. With a poignant ache, Zenrias thought of his darling niece, unable to shake the last image he had of her shrinking, trembling figure at the doorstep of the finishing school. What was it he said?

I'll be back.

Zenrias' chest tightened. Swallowing a lump back down, a thin pool of tears threatened to gather. He blinked it back with as much secrecy as he could muster. How could he have known?...
The wound on his cheek burned. Built on a foundation of sand, she said. Something in that expression sounded so familiar. Zenrias' concussed mind drifted, walking down the lane of weeks-old memory. Once again, he saw the park and Lysandra, and felt the piece of paper being pressed into his hand. The next moment, there he was in his parlor room, setting down cups of hastily boiled tea. The woman before him, desperate for his help, revealed herself as the wife of a Visconti. The fragility of their union had been laid bare, spoken in hushed tones that lingered in the air like the remnants of a storm. Each sip became a puzzle piece, built over the waning fireplace he'd stoked for Atanta, revealing the simple truth of her betrayal: no child deserved to be raised under the shadow of criminality. Down the hall, said child, Calas and Lysandra played a tea party all their own in her bedchambers. As if they'd been sisters all along, oblivious to the fact that their peace would be as transient as the fleeting warmth in their porcelain cups. Back in the parlour room, in exchange for a clean slate and a new identity, Atanta pledged to provide Zenrias with valuable information. It was a delicate dance of mutual benefit, an intricate exchange that required the Ministry of Finance to ensure they were safe in a secret Witness Protection site, awaiting transport to their new lives before ever revealing Emilia's next moves. As the fire crackled and the tea grew cold, they finalized the details of their arrangement. The safety of Atanta and Calas was paramount, and Zenrias committed to his part in the plan. The impending separation, the impending betrayal – it hung in the air, an unspoken truth that both parties understood but dared not articulate. In the end, Atanta had upheld her end of the bargain; ill-timed as it was, the tip-off had gotten to him after all. Which meant, as far as he knew, Atanta and Calas had gotten to the site safely.

But as far as she knew, it was her snake of a father that had dealt the final coup de grace, not Atanta. Considering the present circumstances, it was a small mercy, one Zenrias would have to hold close to his wits, if only to survive the next few weeks with this witch of a woman. Indeed it was crucial, now more than ever, for his head to rule over his heart. It whispered to him, wearing the voice of his late wife, the hypocrisy of concealing betrayal at the hands of a loved one from someone. Zenrias bit the inside of his lower lip, a habit that only surfaced when his inner gears were in the thick of it, chugging away at a thousand and one angles. She was right; newfound power or no, Mogulity restricted movement in nearly every sense of the word. Still, almost no Mogul had ever been afforded a second chance at life like they had; the next logical move would be to seek refuge in Sazzora, the distant, suffocating homeland he had been so desperate to leave all those years ago. But Zenrias knew distance alone would not be enough; erasing the oppressive mark of Mogulity would require a much more drastic move...

Just then, a commanding figure took to the front, like a towering stalk of bamboo amidst bent river reeds. For all the informality in her speech, it was soon clear that what Captain Juna was speaking of was nothing short of a full-scale revolution. These weren't just refugees in her eyes, but potential recruits; supernatural soldiers she could sharpen to strike down the old, Mogul-mad King of Noniel. As admirable as the cause was, Zenrias knew that for now, a snowball's chance in hell was better than convincing his criminal counterpart their respective abilities could be activated for anything other than recovering her 'lost' wife and child.

At Emilia's albeit tentative agreement to a truce, Zenrias brightened slightly, a small seed of relief blooming inside the thorny quagmire of turmoil that was his chest. Breathing out a baited breath, he nodded. "Very well," he replied, casting a glance over to the captain. In a rather bold move, he took ahold of her hand, thumb in happenstance grazing over the scuffed knuckles. "Quickly then, follow me; I may have a plan."

Filtering through the gathered crowd, farther from the speech-making leader but still close enough to other Moguls, Zenrias stopped against the wall of the ship's cabin, creating their own little corner. To ensure the conversation remained private, he leaned in, a white lie all his own leaping from his lips like a frog to a lily pad. "You are mistaken, Mrs. Visconti. There are contacts, solid contacts of mine within both the Ministry of Finance and Justice who owe me a great deal, who may be persuaded to offer assistance in locating your wife and child.

"But you are right in one respect; the records stating us as Moguls makes any effort towards recovering them an uphill battle fit only for the gods. Unless..." Zenrias paused for a moment, choosing his next words carefully, "together, with these new abilities, we destroy those records for good."

As if on cue, once more his right eyebrow ridge began to prickle with mystical Mogulic energy, drawn to its counterpart in two of Emilia's fingertips, just waiting for the physical trigger to release a burst of pacifying sapphire-blue.

"Noniellian propaganda can't change the fact that Floramante, being the most lenient out of all the kingdoms, has only one Mogul testing facility," he continued. "One I have audited many times in the past; I know the grounds well enough. Any and all proof of our Mogulity will be there. Torch it, and the facility for good measure, and this whole nightmare can be passed off as one gross oversight. Not an uncommon occurrence; I know a few in my family have suffered false Mogul accusations throughout their careers. What's more, you'll be freer to find your family. And we..." Zenrias trailed off, gaze flickering between one stone-cold emerald eye to the other, his final sentence a self-soothing, soi-disant nail in the coffin. "We can finally go our separate ways."

Damien shot her a look, commenting on how much he sucked at introductions, “Thanks Lily!” Damien said with an annoyed tone she was used to hearing from their time together in school his cheeks beet red, “how about instead of cackling you introduce yourself.” Luckily, or unlucky depending on who you ask, Lilith had an easier time introducing herself, but he could have done without the elbow to his gut, which he let out an “oof” when hit and the comment about being the captain’s footrest, “Jesus, Lily.” He says pinching the bridge of his nose, “Nothing can ever be normal with you, huh?”

Damien glanced at the ones named Shoku and Cherie and nodded slightly at them, “it’s a pleasure, well, in other circumstances it would have been better.” He admitted. Shoku made a comment about lilith’s eccentric personality and Damien sighed, “I’m sure even the most eccentric personality would think Lily is too much.”

What surprised him next was Shoku’s comment about ‘slipping into old habits’. Growing up he learned never to judge a book by its cover, unless that book is named Lilith, in which case you are getting exactly what you think you are getting. “To protect Cherie, huh.” Damien thought to himself before being slightly taken aback by Cherie’s speech about joining these people that saved them to fight back.

‘if we do nothing, the same thing will happen. If we do something, we can make a change!’ those words rang in his head as he turns his head and observes the rest of the boat.

Everyone one these Moguls…People…Gave off the vibe of either being close friends, lovers, or family. However, the one thing they have in common is they all looked capable of answering the call to fight and become free. Then there was Damien. A skinny kid college kid whose mind was running in different directions.

He wanted to go home but knew he couldn’t without putting his parents in danger. He wanted to take them up on their offer and stay in whatever sanctuary they promised but knew Lilith would throw herself into the fight without him and put herself in danger, could he live with himself if she got hurt because he wasn’t there for her to use her power? Was he the only one who had a issue with being in a war he never asked to be apart of? Did that make him a coward? A realist? Sure, they were like lambs to the slaughter in the prison but if they join the resistance won’t they just be another weapon at their disposal?

“We can make a change, huh.” Damien says, his gaze now on the floor. His hand in a light fist and shaking slightly. Was he afraid? Angry? There was so many emotions running through him that this decent size boat felt as small as the prison cell he was rescued from, “pretty big demand for people who never asked for this.” He said out loud but to no one in particular. This was the first time Lilith has seen Damien like this. She knew he had a tendency to over think things but never to this point of visibly shaking and this was probably not the best second impression he has left on Shoku and his partner.

The Cynic
Ciaran Kilbane
The Birth of Monsters - Boat Ride.

Like two sides of a coin, the overwhelming brightness that naturally radiated off of Rin could only be matched by the overbearing darkness that has rooted itself firmly upon Ciaran's very core. One of lifes many undeniable truths was the fact that nothing in life was free. Everything, regardless of how big or how small had demanded some form of price, some form of payment. Whether that be monetary or not was up to those that sought payment. The only question was, what was the price for their rescue? What did their new captors seek to gain from their costly investment?

Only a fool would delude themselves to believe that their rescuers did all of this out of the goodness of their heart. Humanity was incapable of such charity.

"A new beginning isn't always a good thing..." mumbled Ciaran in response to Rin's optimism; distrustful eyes glancing away from his red haired brethren and instead focusing upon their supposed saviours. Unlike those that saw these soldiers as heroes, their ticket to a better life. Ciaran simply could not bring himself to fall victim to that delusion, to allow himself the luxury of lowering his tightly built defences and allow something 'good' to penetrate all that negativity he kept bottled up inside. Lowering those walls that protected him would only invite the opportunity of betrayal, pain. It would just be more fuel to the fire that stoked the fear that corrupted his very essence.

Alas, despite his better judgement he would resolve to follow Rin's lead. Joining their current benefactors was simply the lesser of two evils, the less thorny of the two paths that had been forced upon them. Sighing heavily and taking in the air of their current surroundings, the blonde haired youth would follow Rin upon the boat. Eyes continuing to study those around them, both soldier and former prisoner. While he held some meagre sympathy for those that just moments ago shared his faith, he had no real reason to trust any of them either. He didn't know them, much less care about them. Despite the Kingdom of Noniel classifying them all as being vermin, Ciaran was still aware that just like himself, they were still human and because of that fact they couldn't be trusted.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ciaran had kept to himself for the current duration of their boat ride. While Rin had attempted to seek comfort in slumber, Ciaran could not allow himself to relax. Not yet at least. With no insight as to the motives of their rescuers and no confirmation that they were completely safe from Noniel, there was simply too much potential for trouble for him to close his eyes and relax; to take a breath of fresh air and enjoy the simple fact that both he and Rin had escaped death.
In truth, as far as he was concerned, they were still at the beck and call of oppressors. Surely these new captors wouldn't just let them walk away once they had escaped the territory of Noniel. They had invested so much, sacrificed so much. If they were willing to go to such extremes to free all of these moguls, then surely they wouldn't be so willing to let their new assets leave without so much as reimbursing that cost of freedom. It was only a matter of time before they would all be handed the methaphorical 'bill'.
It wouldn't take long for Ciaran's concerns to be addressed. His attention would shift towards the soldier that had stepped forward; her armor standing out among the others implying a difference in position.
'So that's their leader...' thought Ciaran, as a piercing gaze was directed towards Juna's direction; the leader of their saviors beginning her little spiel about what they should be grateful and what not; gibberish as far as Ciaran was concerned; especially the statement about not being their enemy. Ciaran had to stifle a laugh. The only way that any of them would not be his enemy, would be if they had somehow transitioned into being a carbon copy of Rin. Somehow, Ciaran highly doubted that. Especially considering that throughout the entirety of this captains speech. She had not once mentioned their freedom, she had not once opened up the possibility of them being allowed to walk away. No, what she did do however was to suggest a war. She had dangled the fruit of chaos in front of each and everyone of these power wielding survivors.
Like a politician with their own agenda, this captain was already sowing the seeds of manipulation upon those that had once sat at the precipice of death. She had provided them with a common enemy, a common goal. Using their freshly fueled emotions, she was already attempting to direct that towards a common enemy. This bitch couldnt even wait till they had landed, couldn't even wait to give them the solace of spending one night of freedom to enjoy their reunion with their partner or for the unfortunate to mourn the death of theirs. No, it was straight into the manipulation, straight into the truth of why they had invested so much resource into rescuing them all.
"I knew it..." spat Ciaran under his breath. "....there is always a price..."
What Captain Juna wanted, what her benefactors desired was the untapped power of the mogul and the key to attaining that power was their 'common enemy' and that was all the moguls needed to believe. So long as their goals aligned, there would be no problems... Wishful thinking for those so dependant upon the present. Ciaran however was looking far ahead into the future... a future where the goals of the oppressed moguls no longer aligned with the rightheous heroes of this tragic night. If they were to survive this 'war', if they were to successfully enact their revenge upon the King of Noniel, what would happen when their power was no longer needed? What would happen when the world came to realize that the Moguls stood at the very pinnacle of this worlds hierarchy?
Noniel was undoubtedly a threat. A kingdom of great influence. It was easy for those to envy the position of their superiors, easy for those languishing in the lower echelons of power to covet the power of the strong... or to villainise them if only to eradicate them. That was after all Noniels present stance, fear of the hidden power that remained dormant within the mogul minority. It was entirely plausible that after all this warfare, all this bloodshed. The moguls would only end up becoming a power that everyone feared, a power that the innate selfishness of humanity would seek to reap for their own benefit or to eliminate in order to usurp them.
Who was to say that they were not being lined up as disposable pawns for their new oppressors? Their anger, their power taken advantage off and discarded once it was no longer needed.
Ciaran's thoughts would only linger on such things for a moment, before he would recall the time spent in the cell, the unbridled anger that was bubbling within himself as he sat bundled in a corner and the promise he had made to himself. He had once more fallen victim to the passive approach, to convince himself that it was better to just 'survive', even if it meant living within the shadows, hiding who they were and what they were meant to be. It was the path he had followed, the path that had lead to his and Rin's capture. It was the path to their death, not their salvation.
No more.
A smirk would curl upon his lips, his eyes glimmering against the moonlight above. "Fine then...no more hiding... no more pretending..." he said to himself. He was done hiding, he was done trying to play under the unfair rules of this unfair game. To lower himself so that the world could continue to believe this fabrication of peace. If they were to be depicted as monsters, then perhaps it was only right for them to accept their role in this play, to become what the world seemed to demand from them. Noniel was right to fear them and their saviours would be fools not to.
Ciaran would make sure of that, if only for his and Rin's sake. If there newest benefactors needed the power of the moguls, then Ciaran would be sure to make them fear the very idea of betraying them. Should they even think of betrayal, then he would force them to their knees in reverence, domesticate them into beasts of obedience.
As Ciaran resolved himself to become the monster he had promised to become to give up on the disguise of being human, he would soon hear a like minded individual speak up, His desire for vengeance driven by an inner, almost bestial furore and while Ciaran shared the man's testament, he was thankful that he didn't have to be the one to say it out loud. Though, it did pique his interest that the mans power seemed to be fire related, similar to that of Rin's.
Did this similarity have any deeper meaning or was it perhaps some miraculous coincidence that the only two people on this boat that Ciaran now seemed to share something in common with held fire related abilities.
Was Ciaran destined to be the winds that stoked the flames of vengeance?
Pondering this thought, Ciaran would turn his attention skyward. While Rin was eager to meet the other fire wielder, Ciaran was continuing to steel the resolve needed for the upcoming chaos.
Juna knew very well that many of these people may have wanted to end all of this and go their separate ways. It was understandable after what happened and what could've happened. That's why the offer was on the table, when they got back to land they had that option of leaving or coming with them. With these pairings I could only imagine what mixed bag we even have at this point. Her eyes gazed over the rest of the pairings, seeing how some were either more embraced, distant, and more. No one could deny that the saying "Opposites Attract" was an understatement for these people. Something had caught her attention as her head turned to see one of the Mogul approaching her, flames were licking off of him before suddenly shrinking down to just small embers. Glad he didn't just set the boat on fire. Good to know that's something he possesses. Now she was curious what his partner had on her side of the partnership if he had the firepower. Literally.
The Captain listened to the boy with his speech and a smirk began to tug at the corner of her lips "If we wanted you to work for us, you wouldn't have this offer." She replied "Though I'm glad we're on the same page here, kid." While he didn't look much younger than her, she still felt inclined to call him that. He's going to need training. He has spunk, but that look in his eyes... I feel like he will burn nations down that are even far from our grasp. I'm going to have to do evals on the way back. He then walked off to mingle with some others This is good for them. Reconnecting with their partners. With others much like them. She took a seat on a nearby crate and began to inspect her gun and make sure everything was in tact. If anyone had questions and wanted to talk to the Captain, now was the time because once they hit land there was no way that they'd get a chance to talk to her till they get to her destination. Too much would be at stake had she slip up.
The stranger was intimidating. What with his complete lack of reaction, not to mention his towering height and rebellious appearance. Watching him stare back at her wordlessly, it was difficult to stay completely unnerved. Her violet gaze faltered, then flickered slightly, towards the deep blue sea and sky behind him. The blended sights of her favourite colour calmed her, before she quietly moved her gaze back towards her target.
He was a far cry from Nina. But then again, what exactly was she expecting? Mogul pairs tended to be opposites, just like Lumian and herself. It was terribly presumptuous of her to try and bond with Nina's partner without any forethought. Choosing to only see Nina's shadow in this stranger rather, was an insult of itself.
Closing her eyes for a moment, she reset her mind. This wasn't Nina. But someone completely new and different. Another mogul. One that she could perhaps get to know and befriend, or stay away from. And that judgement could come now, or with time.
"It is nice to meet you Florian." Were her first words, accompanied by a quiet, if passive smile. Lilia certainly wasn't the super outgoing sort, so even if she no longer only just saw him as 'Nina's pairing', it was a bit tough for her to strike up and continue on a conversation out of the blue. "I'm Lilia, Lilia Canteru." She spoke vaguely, finding that her first introduction after being on death row felt a little unreal.
"You... how are you feeling?" She cautiously unburied the question. Lilia couldn't even begin to imagine what it must feel like. Just one day too late... she would've long gone blind with rage or indignation, hollow and lifeless with grief, or perhaps both at the same time. Lowering her gaze, she took a moment to ponder how to continue.
"Nina was... a sweetheart." She clenched and unclenched her hands restlessly at the thought. "She was kind to me in her last moments, so if there's anything I can do for you... just let me know." She smiled in finality, finding it easier to meet his gaze now that the words had been said.
Having said her peace, Liên Xuân would find herself slowly descending from her gravitational platform, there were calls of various natures, some calling her a liar, others, finding hope, she cared not what the responses were, if there were people who wished to escape, she gave them an option, leaving a door open with a nudge in the direction of safety. Though looking at the boats she'd find a... Dismal affair in her eyes, 'A set of dinghies? That's what these rebels sent to rescue THIS many-- By the Gods we are doomed...' She'd think pulling the hem of her skirt up to step over the side of the small boat, the look of distrust and disgust easily readable in her face mostly at the classless rides that this rebellion secured to rescue so many people standing towards the centre of the dinghy she'd feel herself gravitationally lock her feet to the deck, lest a capsizing event were to happen, she'd be fine just standing with her arms crossed. It was apparent to those who knew the otherwise placid noble, Liên Xuân had had enough of this night, and wanted to simply find a comfortable place to rest, so long as her bed was dry and warm of course. That being said, so long as Aveline was nearby, there was an easy chance the two could make it home, and continue their acts of rebellion against the Kingdom of Noniel quietly. Quietly reflecting on the events, it all felt way too fast, something seemed off, she and various Moguls in her presence were within the encampment for only but a few days before suddenly, this rebellion of sorts attacks and now they're out again. It felt a little too coincidental for Liên Xuân's tastes, especially so given the list of names that seemed to grow, most of which being nobles... There had to be a reason past: 'Sticking it to Noniel!' And the thoughts she had would stir.
Though she would not have to wait long, as a captain of sorts would call attention to those on board, seeming to speak to the various moguls in forced attendance. Introducing herself as Captain Juna, and speaking of the situation they were in, and attempting to excuse herself and her team for if people had died. And... People had died. A failure not only on this Captain Juna but, on Liên Xuân as well, though of a different angle. She had known of various rebellions, and wanted little part in them before, preferring to not send inexperienced people into combat, no matter the training that they gave, at the end of the day, what was a handful of civilians to do against the might of Noniel? Their odds of survival were painfully slim at best, especially so when they attack indiscriminately and openly like this, as all it does is cause reprisal attacks from Noniel within the area, at minimum, and a full purge of all at worst. The game was one with the deck stacked so horribly against this rebellion that they might as well concede at the opening hand, yet, here they were, just like Liên Xuân, struggling from the shadows against the overwhelming foe that wanted the death of thousands, if not millions because of a war some centuries ago. The differences were open, the Captain resorted to violence and destructive means, an eye for an eye. Comparatively, Liên Xuân was less of the violent sort, preferring to traffic and remove, they can't kill those they cannot reach, hide and live.
A sigh would come, before a scoff, as Liên Xuân would look at the Moguls who seemed okay working with the Captain in question, some driven by anger, others, by thirst, but all, with the same desire as the Archduchess, freedom. As people began to introduce themselves, Liên Xuân would mumble to herself, "Mày điên rồi... (You are insane...)" Before setting her gaze on the Captain, her words were blunt and emotionless, she had a plethora of questions, "And where might you find a place to move, house, and feed, at least three-dozen people, let alone your own forces, without the eyes of Noniel catching them? Furthermore, your grouping here seems rather small to pick a fight with a nation whose spending on their military is equal to 4.1% of their Gross Domestic Product. They have entire agencies with more funding than most cities, and you want to fight it, knowing your odds of victory are one in ten-point-two billion? With what income are you going to supply your rebellion? Guns, ships, bombs, food, they cost money after all." Pausing a moment, she'd look over the grouping, before setting her eyes back onto Captain Juna, "Furthermore, the group of Moguls you have gathered, while I do not doubt their capabilities with their partners, do not seem to have a great amount of people who have seen themselves in a fight, let alone know HOW to fight. Thus, you have an army, if we can even call it that, is at best, extremely inexperienced and highly volatile. So, if you are sure you want to go through with it, then, understand that you have a near impossible amount of work to do, and assuredly an unenviable position."
Lumian leaned back against the edge of the boat. Kid, huh, it had been a while since anyone had called him that. Those who lamented losing to a 'kid' like Lumian often had bigger things to worry about by the time he was done with them.
He shrugged lightly, turning to the man next to him. "Just alike? You think?" He inquired with a small grin. Lumian didn't think of himself as someone who necessarily loved to fight. Rather, he'd found that violence was the best way out of any and all conflicts. Then again, there was something cathartic about letting himself go completely. "Perhaps we are, perhaps we aren't. Either way, I'll drink to that next time we hit a bar." He responded with a grin.
"Name's Lumian. I used to live a relatively quiet life in Floramante until I got into a scuffle of sorts with the authorities. Nowadays, me and my partner spend our days taking from Noniel's rotten nobility. Or, well, I suppose we did that, not anymore." He glanced over at Lilia, making sure her conversation was proceeding smoothly. "Authorities don't take kindly to thieves, and they especially don't take kindly to mogul thieves. It was a matter of time until I slipped up."
"But I'm out now, and I'm not stopping at stealing this time around."
He added, extending his hand towards the man called Rin. "What about yourself, can't imagine you ended up in that godforsaken facility by choice. Who would? Their catering sucked."
Juna continued to inspect her gun, making sure her switches, buttons, etc were all in tact while she was being questioned. "You know, I appreciate your impulsive and baseless opinion blondie." The words came off her tongue like venom, she wasn't an Officer for nothing. Worked her ass off to get into this position and was not about to be questioned about it either. "Good luck not being captured by the Mogul hunters once again and getting that ass of yours tossed back into a cell away from your partner." Pulling a lever back on her weapon, she let it release with a loud clink. "You're 0 for 1 now." Her head turned in the direction of the woman, bringing her gun to aim toward the sky but lean on her shoulder as she got up "Also to add a little bit of spice to your day, Little Girl, what in the fuck makes you think that you're entitled to any of the information you're asking for, hmm?" While her mask remained on her face, she tilted her head slightly to the side to give some attitude to her words. "Do you just think we give that shit out for free like candy on Halloween night? I'd say that's a bit of a limp dick way to orchestrate a rebellion, dont'cha think?"
The Captain was not about to have an argument with a mogul who decided to grow a pair of balls and question her every move during this operation. This girl knew nothing of what they had planned and surely she wouldn't get any answers. "Feel free to leave once we get there if you really believe we're not to your caliber, princess." Juna looked around and shouted out "Does anyone else have any stupid pseudo-intelligent IQ hot takes or are we good to continue forward?" When there was really no response, she gave a firm nod "Good." Turning her attention to the woman, she spoke "Go bond with your partner if they're still even alive and on this boat and stop asking stupid questions that'll get you no answer." With that said, she walked away from the Mogul and checked in on her driver.
Whatever Nina had conversed with Lilia about during their time in the same cell, the impact she had formed upon this girl’s life was obvious. For others who shared Nina’s cell along with Lilia, her presence, her name, her personality might all be lost to the filtration of memory within a week or so, but it looked as though Lilia would carry what she knew carefully for the remainder of her life. The tension in the fist she clenched, the catch in her throat during her words, Nina had been the good girl her mother surely wanted her to be.
As a sister, she had been cautious around Florian, especially when he parked his motorcycle on the curb and approached her, but there was no denying the magnetism of their linked bond. The nervous energy accompanied her, but putting others first came naturally unless deep fear overtook her.
But here was the confirmation that Nina’s final few hours had been spent in kindness despite it all. Florian was happy to take that recollection as pure fact, and wouldn’t question it a second. Similarly, if Lilia wanted to provide a nomadic body for that kindness, and pass it onto him if he was ever to need it, he would accept when the time came.
Although, that raised the possibility that Lilia would be within reach for the foreseeable future, and it was at this time that Florian glanced beyond her at the gathered folk surrounding the captain of the vessel, dominant at the centre of it all. Had he missed something?
Probably. He often did; his lack of attention at times had nothing to do with intellectual prowess invading his mobile mind, but more the ability to let himself go and just drift along for a while. With everything that had happened over the course of the last half an hour, the only active decision he had made for himself was to seek out a cigarette from one of their rescuers, but after that point he really did just let himself drift, phrasing that was particularly apt upon his alighting on the boat.
As he pulled his attention back to Lilia, Florian noticed someone else’s eyes drawn the same way. He spoke while looking at the person who had glanced their way.
‘… … Nina… her mother will be glad that she was kind to someone scared, before she died. Thanks for telling me. In return…’
His pale eyes dropped to Lilia, then back up to the young man sat with some other Mogul in the boat. A previous cellmate of his. The precision in his observation of her conversation with Florian told the latter that these two were certainly a pairing. Perhaps Lilia would appreciate knowing what occurred in their cell, too.
‘… I can tell you that Lumian was fighting for you the whole time you were apart. I’m not so sure if he ever said your name aloud, but he was driven by someone… you probably knew that but…’ Florian trailed off, looked elsewhere and shrugged, the whole action culminating in one go to finish the phrase for him: ‘no harm repeating it.’
Money....
Freedom. A feeling that seemed so far and now was gripping him tightly with a vice grip. He didn't care they had to witness the violent means that granted him this ocean breeze once more. It also felt like a great weight has been lifted off his shoulders. Knowing Carina was relatively safe now put him at much needed ease. Despite his selfishness, he couldn't help but think about Carina and her well being while in the cell. Now all those feelings sunk into the ocean like a rock, fading away from his mind. The only thing that kept him mildly uneasy was being at the mercy of their 'saviors'. He didn't know what plans they had and it was hard to guess as to what they wanted. Christoph was dragged out of his thinking with a pinch of the cheek. Seems like his mind could wander another time.
Christoph rolled his eyes as Carina apologized. She always too apologetic, he didn't even care. You can't control fate or that's what he thought. "No need to apologize. It happened and that's the end of it." His voice was monotone, but he meant every word he said. The thought of her actions wasn't even in his mind, in fact, the stolen goods he still had in his pocket made up for his prison time. He was more interested in her other statement. He has extensively thought it through and there wasn't much they could do. They couldn't flee, jumping into the ocean would be a suicide sentence. They just had to hunker down for a bit and slip away when they could. That was the only way to get out of this.
"We can't do anything right now, in fact, we are in almost the same situation as the prison. Being at the mercy of someone else isn't the freedom I was looking for but it beats getting shot in the back of the head." He understood her uneasiness as he felt it himself but they just had to stick it out for now. "Just lay low and don't do anything stupid. We don't need any eyes on us right now." Simple instructions that should be easy to follow. Making a scene would be the last thing they needed. Keeping calm and being steadfast was all they needed to do. Hopefully Carina would be able to do the same as him.
Shoku accepted Cherie's pushiness as he did not want to upset the girl, that was the reason why he loosened his hold and moved away, but if she wanted it she would get it, so Shoku threw his arms once again around Cherie into a loose hold and he just sat there listening and observing.
"I have to agree with Cherie, this group knew what to do, following them as their subordinate or an ally is better than making enemies out of them."
Shoku felt proud at Cherie's little speech he even moved one of his hands to pat her head and spoke silently and softly so only she would hear.
"And that's why you are the inspiring talker here, Cherie they need motivation, not a harsh reality check to act." Shoku heard Damiens's little retort so he spoke to him with his empty melancholic depressed eyes.
"You think anyone asked for this? Do you think anyone wanted to be a mogul? To be hunted down? To be a prisoner on death row? To have to watch people die? No one asks for those things but it happens, we cannot change the past kid, the past is a part of us even if we don't want it. It shapes us, it molds us, but it does not define us. If I had a way I would change many things in my past, but thinking about it will only spiral us down into madness. The only choice we have is to learn from the past, not to make the same mistakes and to push forward, for our future, for the future of those to come. Look I'm not berating you, but I don't want you to end up like me kid, if you spiral down with your thinking you end up like me... Ok maybe better than me at least you don't have my traumas."
After his little speech, Shoku let out a deep sigh and sunk deeper into Cherie as he embraced her tighter, remembering his past, preaching to someone as if he was any better than him, it.... It didn't feel right to him.
EMILIA VISCONTI
The Vindictive Vandal
TAGS | Seraphine Seraphine
MENTIONS | Britt-21 Britt-21
In his eyes are the reflection of some great mistake that he now dwells on. The words cut deep, like stakes to the heart. Cruel, perhaps. But Emilia cares very little about his feelings when Zenrias had every warning, every opportunity given to back out. To stop with his damnable crusade against the shadows of injustice. But he is here, scrabbling for any sort of leverage, anything that was stop her from enacting vengeance for what his idealistic nonsense has cost them both.
She’s sure that he thinks himself a hero. The great Visconti heir, brought low by his actions. But a feeble mind like his surely aches for all that he has lost. All his wealth, all his family and friends, ripped away with a decision and the undying stigma of being Mogul. The latter is not exclusive to him, but the acquisition of power, though distasteful as it is to share it with him, could be useful in the short-term. It is a sting to his pride.
The idea had merit, at least. On paper. Only a handful of men had seen with their own eyes that they were Mogul. But rumors spread fast, propagated far beyond what the government could reasonably handle. Noniel’s grip on the perception of Moguls, of their powers, ensured that what could have allowed for a significant legal battle that would’ve ended in her going free instead sent her to the execution facility. They proclaimed it from the spires of ancient cathedrals to the rocky, unpaved roads that led to the Broken Lands - Emilia Visconti was Mogul, and would be executed.
But it was still possible to twist the truth. Perhaps there was no need to destroy the documents. Maybe Emilia Visconti really died an inglorious death after years of evading the righteous arm of the law. Another name, another life, another lie. Once Atana and Calas were freed from Amadeo’s clutches, the world would open up. They could go anywhere. But where to go?
Yes, Emilia thinks, the foundation stones of a plan setting into place, it could be useful.
She hears the captain’s announcement and blanches. Freed only for the sake of fighting against that wretched monarch? It angers her, stirs the roiling clouds of anger in her breast. Emilia Visconti was not some pawn to be placed on the board to be sacrificed. Certainly not for some foolish revolution that was already doomed to fail. Were they to be their forlorn hope, the ones to charge into the fray so that their saviors would claim the mantle of hero? Dying as a mere footnote on the stage of history, never seeing her wife and daughter again?
No, Emilia seethes, she would not like to be part of this. Damn their notions of overturning Noniel’s hegemony; the whole thing stinks of idealistic fools who detest Noniel’s ascendancy over the rest of the world. The Mogul? Convenient excuse. A masterstroke in securing desperate, needy people to render services unto them out of gratitude, much as she had when consolidating her grip on parts of the Floramantine capital.
If their revolution is carried on the backs of freed Mogul who have other desires than fighting for their cause, then their heads will be rolling off the guillotine.
Whatever. A place to stay, to recuperate and eventually set off will be most welcome. Feigning gratitude and interest in their cause would open up opportunities to filch weapons. Though Emilia doubts it will be up to her exacting standards. The reminder of her impoverished status stings, and as she looks up to Zenrias, she suppresses that sweet voice that tells her to hurt him, to maim-kill-burn. It would be so easy to throw him overboard.
But she needs a shield. Someone who will willingly carry the burden. The fool has proposed this plan, and so Emilia wishes for him to be the one to see it through.
“Burn the facility,” she repeats slowly, tasing the words on her tongue. It is a flavor that soothes and calms, but burns hot with the fires of vengeance. “Yes, I can see the benefit in that. Time it with this… revolution we find ourselves caught in, and we can both slip away, our names swept away by the the flow of time and drowning in obscurity. In peace, of course. You will be freed of me, and I of you.”
The hand is extended, burning with shame.
Peace. For the sake of this act of their play, Emilia will play her part to the hilt.
NEW BEGINNINGS
1708205338999.png"I like the sound of that. Sake all around!" He said through his bandages as he rested against the boat. He continued to listen to his new companion as he goes on about his previous life before all this. He was a thief within the very kingdom Ciaran and himself were just taken from. He was surprised they haven't crossed paths one way or another. Especially with Ciaran's ties with the criminal underground of Noniel. He had no opinions towards him being a thief, especially since he stole from the corrupted nobles within Noniel. However, knowing Ciaran hearing this, he'll keep Lumian under his constant radar. What's that famous saying Ciaran always tells him? There's no honor amongst thieves. He had no reason to believe that everything Lumian said to be true, but this is Rin were talking about. So of course he's gonna believe him, what reason did Lumian had to lie to him.
His eyes glances down at the hand that extended towards him for a second, before he looks back up at Lumian and gladly shakes his hand. "I've actually sent most of my life with a group of monks within Sazzora. It wasn't until recently, that I made my way back to Noniel to meet up with my brother." He says glancing over at Ciaran. "There, I just spent my time training and enjoying the corrupted underground nightlife Noniel had to offer. I can't tell you how many fighting pits I ended up in for a bit of cash. Though being apart of that type of scene is what exactly got us caught up. We had intentions to go back and mess up the guy responsible, but know it seems we have a new calling elsewhere." He says referring to Captain Juno and her plan. "I exactly excited to see what this may lead for us in the future. I have a feeling this just may work out for us."
He then peers over to the captain and what looks to be....wait is that Liên Xuân. "I know that woman....well I know of her. She's a noble out in Sazzora. Who knew she was a Mogul as well. Small world we live in." He continued to look over in their direction and as the scene played out Rin would just lean closer and closer, as he eating up the drama. And as the Captain finished her last words to Liên Xuân, a snicker would escape his mouth. "Looks like someone pissed off the Captain." He said looking over towards Ciaran and Lumian.
Another scoff would come from the Noble's lips, as she watched the response of the supposed Captain, who fiddled with her gun before resting it on her shoulder, to Liên Xuân, it was an attempt at intimidation, one that would fall short of the desired effect, in fact, it more amused her, that Juna so quickly had gotten defensive over simple questions and prodding. Adding insults and barbs to her comments without even so much as attempting to answer any of the questions posed, shaking her head, she'd glance to the soldiers that were there, then to Ava, knowing that if things started to boil over, there was at least someone who looked with reason, as opposed to simply accepting what another said without questioning it. Returning her gaze to Juna, Liên Xuân would take a small step forward, her body language said it all, 'You don't worry me one bit.' Before speaking with her tone getting progressively colder, "Well, child. I ask, as right now, there is little to convince me that you've actually thought any of this through, and judging by the response given, It is a 92% probability that you will likely get those around you killed before you even strike another facility. After all, you've very much agitated the Hornet's nest, and likely are Public Enemy Number One to Noniel and their allies." Pausing a moment, she'd adjust her glasses, which slid from the wind before speaking once more, "The questions that I had asked, were questions that anyone with any knowledge of rebellions would, or, quite honestly, anyone who puts logic and reason above all. And to lash out like an ill-tempered child is not quite the way to gather allies, which you so desperately need with who you're up against. The questions I had posed were not hard to answer, and you didn't even need to answer them fully, there are ways to give information without flushing your entire hand, especially so to a possible ally. Of course, that is if you can retain your poise and refrain from belittling and attacking said prospected allies." With a Noble smile, Liên Xuân would soon turn her heel, giving a single handed wave as if to tell Captain Juna that the conversation had finished, for now.
Deep down, she was livid, her questions were not hard to answer, as she very much would have accepted half-truths and partial answers, so long as she could verify that, this rebellion was actually thought through and not some rag-tag team of vagabonds who wanted to pick a fight with the biggest nation in the world. Yet, despite her frustrated feelings that boiled within her chest, Liên Xuân kept her poise, showing a calmed and logical demeanor, as if she disconnected her emotional responses from her mind, however there were subtle hints to her emotion, undetectable except to those closest to her, as she'd make her way to where Aveline was, she'd give a confident, smile, her lips pursed in a familiar way that displayed the frustration and annoyance, as in the back of the Archduchess' mind, she thought Juna and her Troops to be idiots with a death wish, she'd, however, speak in her normal, calmed voice of reason tone, "How're you doing? It's been quite a few days, and I want to make sure you are okay." She'd pause, shaking her head to herself, "N-not that I... Think you're weak or anything, but, it's assuredly been a stressful time, I'm sure, and wanted to make sure that you're holding up fine."
Gods she was bad at this...
Saturday Evening - 12:45am - Coast of Yamor Kingdom - Northeast side - Pulling off the Boats and into the trucks.
The body of water was fairly large and while they did have speed boats to cross from Noniel to Yamor it did take time for them to make it to land without being caught by casual coast guards. The rebel group was quiet and did their best to avoid any attention and suspicion while trying to get to their rendezvous. It was clear that they knew more than what they seemed to know. They were organized and did things accordingly and accurately as possible. Eventually they got to their destination and boats had been brought up onto the shores and many were beginning to unload. The Mogul who wanted to go home or go elsewhere had began to disperse while the remaining Mogul had been left with the Rebellion. The men were already moving things from the boats and into the trucks that had been sitting not too far from their landing point and they moved swiftly. Lucky for the group, the city was further up north which allowed this to happen under the noses of the government. Now it's almost 1am and it was time to load onto the trucks if you so please. Though, it looks like Juna is gonna talk so you may wanna see what she says.
CAPTAIN JUNA
"Give me full coverage, boys. I want 360 security until we are all piled in and get some distance from this clingy ex of ours."
Wordlessly, the rebel soldiers fanned out to form a loose circle formation around the Mogul escapees. They took a knee once in position and kept the rifles at the ready pointed outwards with their backs to the trucks.
The captain made her way over to one of the trucks with a quick, confident gait, slinging her rifle across her shoulder and hoisting herself up by the handrail. She then turned to face the remaining stragglers, letting her gaze sweep over their dirtied faces and hollow eyes.
"Now's the time to make your choices. Our objective today was to take out an important facility to Noniel. This was not a rescue operation. We just have a little something called a conscience and didn't want to lose sleep over getting innocents caught up in our sabotage mission."
The armored woman pauses for a moment, giving her words time to sink in before continuing, "Part ways here and that will be that. You don't owe us anything. But if you decide to climb into these trucks with my men, you are willing signing your lives to our cause and I intend to use them to further our goals without hesitation."
Again, another pause. There was a wave of discomfort and concern that visibly swept its way through the small crowd. There were no verbal objections but no one loved the idea of being freed only to willingly put another pair of shackles on their hands and feet.
"We are fighting to rip the still-beating heart of Noniel's king out of his chest and to make this damned nation one we can actually be proud of. One where we dont have to look away from the atrocities committed to our neighbors just to save our own sorry asses."
Juna then fully swung herself into the back of the troop transport, hands returning to her rifle in a swift, practiced motion.
"I'm not asking you to join. I'm being clear with what happens if you do."
"You climb in here, you are one of us until the fat lady sings. And I will personally shoot you like a damn dog if you do anything to jeopardize our mission. I will not tolerate insubordination or treason within our ranks. Understand that before you join. Otherwise, good luck. May whatever gods you believe in help you this time 'cuz they sure as shit didn't help you before."
The captain then looked up past the crowd to the soldiers pulling security for the group, "Load up! The faster we get back to base, the faster I can shower. You all know I despise having this filthy blood touch me. Even from inside the armor."
"Yes, Ma'am!" Came the resounding reply from hooded gunmen before standing from their kneeling positions, pivoting and swiftly making their way into the trucks.
The Cynic
Ciaran Kilbane
The Birth of Monsters - Boat Ride.
Ciaran's attention would subtly be stolen away from Rin and Lumien, drawn towards the blonde haired woman that had begun to question Juna. Without having to be a psychic or a master at 'reading' people, Ciaran could already tell that the air around this woman was different from those he had seen thus far. Something about her felt more authoritative, as if she exuded an aura of 'being above' the common people. Given this initial impression, Ciaran could not help but scoff in her direction; his recent experiences with those of 'higher class' being less than savoury.
That being said, despite his present impression towards her, he could not help but find himself in agreement with most of what she said. While the vast majority of those present seemed content with simply being 'free' from their death sentence, this woman at the very least was asking the real questions. She was looking beyond the here and now and taking into consideration what happened next and whether her motivations were the same as Ciaran or not was simply trivial at this point.
"Finally... someone with some sense..." mumbled Ciaran, watching attentively.
It was in Ciaran's nature to question and to doubt. To replace optimism with scepticism. It was the only way he truly knew how to survive, to move forward and to protect himself. He didn't have the confidence to simply walk blindly, the courage to accept that high rewards required high risk. It wasn't him and it would perhaps never be him. There was safety in casting doubt and in adopting caution. The act of trusting others opened the door for betrayal and of pain while the act of trusting himself brought safety. Rin was simply the exception to this rule, the one anomaly that prevented Ciaran from closing himself off entirely. Had Rin not been here, then it was a dead set fact that Ciaran would have taken the first opportunity to leave, to avoid the risk of war and of death.
Thus, if Ciaran was going to follow Rin down this path of chaos and death, then he would need to know as much as he could, he would need to factor the entire situation in order to best protect what was important. If the plan of Juna and her benefactors held no real foundation, then despite Rin's optimism, Ciaran would have to act.
A brief glance would be afforded towards Rin and Rinnosuke, the two embodiments of fire unsurprisingly getting along with one another. Ciaran would sigh ever so slightly as he overheard part of their conversation, particularly Rinnosukes remark about the future. This was the exact difference between the pair of them; Unlike Rin, Ciaran could not help but feel like trouble awaited them.
That being said, it was what came after that remark that would cause Ciaran to think back on the present situation. "I suspected she was of high birth..." mumbled Ciaran, his gaze now placed back upon Liên Xuân and the captain. While Rin eagerly looked forward, Ciaran had instead sat back into his seat; casually watching the scene before them.
While Ciaran was appreciative of the fact that someone else seemed to hold reservations towards their present situation; he wasn't as keen or interested in how the conversation was now devolving into who had the bigger dick among the pair of them. If anything, Ciaran's already lacklustre opinion of the Captain had regressed even more, considering how easily she had lost her composure. On top of that Ciaran already wasn't too fond of those born of higher status and the privileges that they were afforded for simply winning the lottery at birth. It was the way they talked... the way they acted as if that pretentious and obnoxious arrogance they seemed to carry actually made them any better than those born of lower status.
Regardless of his opinions, the questions asked were completely justified. Lives were at stake here and if they were to commit to the cause, then they would need their reservations addressed. Unlike Juna and the others that had chosen to become soldiers, most of those here didn't. Not everyone here sought that battlefield, not many here had the confidence to put their lives on the line for others. While there were a few who would gladly rush forward blindly upon the wind of optimism, there were others here that still held doubt, that still sought to attain a life of peace beyond this witch hunt.
So what right did the Captain and her benefactors have to try and manipulate them?, to use the recent imprisonment as a tool to manipulate their emotions towards a common enemy and to then have the gall to not even attempt to appease their concerns. If they truly wanted to work alongside the Moguls, to gain allies against a common enemy, then surely the first step would be one that nurtured cohesiveness, not one that sparked divisiveness.
Ciaran sighed. "We are all going to die..." he said under his breath, turning to glance away from everyone and instead towards the water around them. Once more, it was only Rin's presence here that was stopping Ciaran from taking his own preferred actions.
Upon arriving at the shores of Yamor, Ciaran like the others would find himself among a crowd of other Moguls, eyes scanning the unfamiliar scenery around him whilst also attempting to pay attention to the soldiers that had escorted them here. It would be a short while before they were addressed, those that wanted to leave being granted the opportunity to do so.
"So..." spoke Ciaran, turning to face Rin. "Are you adamant on joining these soldiers?" he questioned, glancing towards Juna. "I am all for revenge and punishing the king of Noniel, I would gladly watch his head be severed from body and his remains fed to the dogs if it meant we could live without concern for our lives... however.. I cannot bring myself to trust these soldiers... nor do I feel any inclination towards putting my life on the line for them. I trust you and I want to trust in your optimism despite my better judgement... so if you truly think that this is the best cause of action for us... then I will go with you. Not to help them, but to help you. I couldn't care less about their lives." he finished, focusing on Rin.
Shoku sat there cuddled into Cherie, eavesdropping on most conversations that he could hear happening on the boat, it was his professional deviation so to speak, after all when you work in espionage you gather all the information, but he was still thinking about how his words to Damien sounded. Shoku knew he was harsh to the boy, and that he was contradicting his advice of motivation to Cherie with his own reality check to the boy. It wasn't right but it needed to be done or at least he thought of it that way.
What pissed Shoku off though was the actions of Liên Xuân, she clearly knew nothing of how not to trust anyone with any information till the dues were paid. She probably lived a good life without having to watch out for knives in your back. Thankfully the boat ride ended and they had to disembark so Shoku supported Cherie's back with his hands as he stood up before putting his hands under her armpits to stand her up the quick way, he then looked at Lilith and Damien and said. "Let's get going kids. We still have a long way to go before we get to moderate levels of safety."
He then moved out of the boat alongside Cherie making sure she was never outside the reach of his arms, almost like an overprotective owner of a too-energetic puppy, that's how Shoku probably looked to others. But truthfully he did not want to let Cherie go, the time they were separated from each other after such a long time of being together made his heart grow fonder. Not that he would admit it to anyone especially not Cherie herself, but it was a good feeling, a feeling he had not feel in a long time.
Now with everyone out of the boat and standing on solid ground with a truck in the backdrop of this whole scene, Shoku listened to Juna's speech, before speaking himself.
"At least you have a human conscience, unlike my previous boss. And while I know of my decision whether to follow you or not, I do not go alone and I have my partner's opinion to listen to as well. After all, what is a mogul without his partner than a lone soul? No offense Florian!"
Shoku then turned his head towards Cherie, looking deep into her eyes with a small pretty much formal smile, he then spoke once again while putting his hand forward towards her. "Well then Cherie what is our choice? You are the heart between us two, after all, so it's your choice to make."
Cherie noticed Damien's gaze drop and his hand in a fist. Curiously, she had watched before he spoke again and her eyes had softened. In her mind, it was better to do something rather than nothing. If it weren't for these people coming and getting them out of there, they'd be executed one by one just because they existed in this world. It was a thought that endlessly played within her mind and why would she allow anyone who was just as innocent as herself and many others to suffer this horrible fate? The conversation had ended after that and instead of trying to mingle, she felt exhaustion pulling her down into a slumber. The girl eventually fell asleep against Shoku as she found herself safer here in his arms and on the speed boat instead of that cell with guards watching every move they made, or heard every conversation they had. The warmth of her partner's chest was so comforting, almost like a blanket on a winter morning. It definitely went against the cold of the air as she could barely feel it within her slumber.
Suddenly, she felt movement and her warmth removed as her eyes opened and looked around before being hoisted up by her pits and was suddenly on her feet. "Hey I'm not awake yet!" Rubbing her golden eyes, she yawned and looked towards her partner before taking a good look at where they were. We're already on land? Not that I'm complaining! She thought happily as Shoku even spoke with the pair from earlier "I would say we're pretty safe! These guys definitely look like they know what they're doi-" As she got off the boat, she noticed that there were trucks ready and soldiers were already packing one of them with the supplies that they had. "These guys work very quick... But it's kind of to be expected after blowing up the biggest execution facility." While not exactly talking to someone directly and was merely her thoughts coming out, there was no doubt that Sho may say something to reply to that. However, Juna began to speak to the group, explaining what was going on. Cherie's eyes widened They werent here to rescue us? Then maybe we should be a little bit more grateful that they decided to give us mercy by releasing us before blowing the building up.
They were given a choice, that was to either go back to where they came from or stick with these guys and basically sign their lives to their cause. Even if Shoku and I did go back... Her eyes side-glanced him but didn't move her head too much to gain his attention We wouldn't be able to go back to our normal lives. We'd have to stay in hiding throughout our entire life and run when things get tough. On top of it all, they have our faces and there's no way to avoid that without someone snitching... The orange-haired girl already had her mind made up and knew that she'd rather choose Life over Death. The captain continued to at least reveal some of their plans and that was something that she could get behind. To her, it sounded like that perhaps they were running like an army? Those who went will begin boot camp the moment their asses get into those trucks. Once Juna had finished, she immediately turned to her partner and looked up at him as he locked gazes. It was as if he knew already, despite asking her what she wanted to do.
Golden hues dropped to his hand and she immediately grabbed it and spoke "Our choice is to stay with these guys. If we choose to leave, we will be in hiding all our lives. People will report us if they're that soulless. There would be no peace for us. I'd rather fight for the future of us Mogul and the generations to come than just sit idly by while others get taken from their friends and family. This needs to end, and I know you know that better than anyone." Looking back up towards him, she locked her eyes with his "The king has always been corrupt for as long as I've noticed. He's the influence to all the other kingdoms and danasties. I don't like to take revenge, it's... It's just a dirty word for me." With the shake of her head, she continued "But I want the future to flourish. Not die out." With a gentle squeeze of her hand unto his, she spoke "What about you Shoku? What do you want? It's alwas about me and what I think. But I want to hear from you." Cherie's other hand lifted up and she poked his chest with her finger to make a point
Choices
1710006930854.pngA childish grin formed under his bandages, as he sat forward listening attentively to the conversation between Lien Xuan and Captain Juna. From his time he spent at the monastery growing up, he was forced to study the history of Sazzora all past and current nobles. He's read a bit of Lien Xuan and her families nobility. She rose to become Archduchess of her estate at the early age of 19 succeeding her father. History books as always depicted her as a calculated woman, who analyzes everything to the minute detail. Seeing it in person, was will I guess you can say interesting. Someone like Rin cause truly care for all the extra details of things. A few is good, but once you started adding numbers its gets real boring. Someone like Ciaran though can appreciate it. As the scene continued to play out towards the ending, Rin simply just looked at them, both eyes narrowing down upon them. From that rather short and quick interaction, he's learned that Captain Juna is not the one to who likes to be questioned no matter what and who seems to have a bit of a temper. Her side is understandable, she already said that their objective here wasn't to free us, but just to destroy a facility. So us being here, a favor from them, and using us in their revolution is returning the favor. At least that's what it seems like. For Lien Xuan, he learned that she was truly analytical and knows how to reserve her temper, figuring that after a interaction like that, one would be pretty upset. And her ability to hold that in seems pretty legit. "This boat ride just got a bit more spicier ." He said chuckling leaning back against the side of the boat.
After a few more hours within the boat ride, the shores of Yamor Kingdom could be seen in the horizon. Rin peered over at Ciaran with a bit of excitement gleaming in his eyes. He was getting anxious to be honest just riding this boat for the longest time. After the finally boarded the shore and escorted off, he stood by Ciaran as the two of them followed the soldiers and Captain Juna to a location not too far from the shore. There were military trucks lined up one by one behind one another. Looking around he noticed soldiers unloading the boats and loading everything into the trucks. He then noticed that there were moguls who decided to leave and return back home or start a new life elsewhere. There was no judgement amongst those moguls who decided to leave. Some would rather continue there life in hiding, than live free and fight back against their oppressors. No judgement at all. He then looks at the soldiers as Captain Juna ordered them to set up a perimeter around the ones who stayed, their guns pointed outward. Then another announcement began.
Her announcement was pretty straight forward, leave and live the rest our lives as we see fit, up until we're caught again or simply killed. Or, join her ranks devoting our lives to their cause, until we either die or succeed. The choice for him was pretty obvious. The simple life was never for Rinnosuke. The years he spent back in Noniel were peaceful, but he was always looking forward towards the next exciting thing. He loved the thrill, he loved the adrenaline, he loved to fight. So fight he will. He's tired of hiding, and won't allow to live the rest of his life on the run. His mind was made up. He looked over to Ciaran preparing to tell him, what he wanted to do, but he was already asking his questions. "You know me the most out of anyone in this world. I'm tired of living the peace and quiet life. And I won't be living my life on the run either. I want to join them. want to see where this revolution leads. I'm already knowing that you don't trust em, shit I barely trust em. I just have a feeling that this will lead to something greater than working the criminal underground within Noniel. The monks knew I would do great things one day, maybe this is the start of it. We go and do this together, and we watch over each others backs as usual." With his final words, he holds his hand out ready to receive the dap from his brother. Upon making contact, Rin's eyes would blink golden for a mere second and steam would be seen flowing from behind his bandages and a few spots from his body. After a few more moments the steam would stop and he begins unwrapping the bandages. Once complete, he looks around for his new acquaintance Lumian. "I'll meet you on the trucks, Ima go see what our new friend is planning on doing." With that, Rin walks from Ciaran and heads right up to Lumian. "So what are you planning on doing Lumian." Voice was clear as day, no longer muffled by the bandages.
Not a rescue mission, Captain Juna said. That was obvious. They’d failed, after all. Although Florian wasn’t stupid enough to spit a sly remark like that into the cold air while surrounded by Juna’s men with high-powered weaponry, he was unable to shake free from the digging claw of the sensation that knotted his brow and narrowed his eyes.
Within her next few phrases though, Florian’s expression would be disguised amongst those of the Mogul group: what could be interpreted as a recruitment tactic wrapped up in an expectation of gratitude-based obligation was probably not what the others expected, and the general fug of distrust present in the various responses showed that perfectly well.
Florian blinked slowly in the face of Juna’s proposition, and, just for a few moments, relinquished any care he held over his position in the world.
Juna proposed that the death of the King of Noniel would ensure a brighter future in the kingdom for posterity, and her determination to bring this goal about would see her take any measure she deemed reasonable to achieve it. She had her holy grail, and she would reach for it with both hands.
Next, the Mogul around him. Murmuring mouths, loyal sentiments, questions built from the care and appreciation the majority had for each other. There would be no agreement without their partner’s acceptance, and whether that agreement was founded on the desire to wield Mogul power and improve their chances of success, or the kinship or romance they had found in each other, it didn’t matter. Here and there, Mogul pairs were weighing up the choice, some partners agreeing, some even asking other Mogul pairs what their thoughts were. They had found brotherhood in their binds, sisterhood in their shackles and, although cut free by these agents and their captain, would move with the Mogul blood and not strike out alone.
Seven months ago, Florian didn’t even know he was Mogul. The vague memory of something happening with Nina when she was a tiny girl shifted in its dark recess, but Florian knew the importance lay not with the events, but with the days after. The days his parents’ faces held controlled panic, and the absquatulating of his mother with Nina under the pretence of… something. Florian had forgotten that part, admittedly. He grew up with the knowledge that he was a brother, but never with direct feedback to that effect until he met her again, and that spark reignited. For six months, he understood what place he held in the world, and that place was by Nina’s side, soothing her anxiety with the cool hand of his relaxed nature.
If he was still Mogul, if Nina stood beside him now, what would they do? What choice would she make, what choice would she want to make?
He suspected he knew. She would want to run away. Even if the idea of future safety or idyllic revenge tempted her, she would not want to climb in the truck with Juna.
But, Florian continued the thought, pale eyes brushing past the Mogul pairs nearest to him, Nina would climb in if she had these people to rely on. If Lilia had been kind, she would want to fight to help Lilia.
Right?
Possibly. Probably.
He was probably right.
Florian’s eyes had run out of people to look at, and they were fixed on the railing Juna had leaped over. In the gloom, he could just about make out his reflection in its scratched surface. His features were distorted, and the world behind him curved, forming an oval of land, and beyond that, a swathe of sea that gave way to dark sky. He blinked slowly again, at himself in the railing, and saw no one else was doing the same.
Lone soul, indeed.
Florian withdrew his hands from the pockets of his coat and stretched them above his head, yawning in the process. As he was blinking away his fatigue, he looked up at Juna and, while his eyes narrowed and his brow fell a tad, he let that easy smile come at its own pace to his lips.
Hoisting himself up by the railing into the truck, he found a space near Juna and fell into it, sitting without decorum and rather awkwardly due to his height. Without warning, he reached a hand out to flick a finger against the rifle she held.
‘My only condition for being here is that you teach me to shoot. I’m not exactly Mogul anymore, after all.’
Lilith stood aside as things got unexpectedly tense. She'd never seen Damien look so serious. And Cherie's lucky partner, Shoku, went full lecture mode to her partner. Brash she may be, she knew when to really keep her mouth shut. Whatever was going through Damien's head, she doubted anything she could say would help. She also hadn't considered his feelings up to now. Of course, not everyone would be willing to fight a war. It wouldn't feel right to force him along... But that's as far as her consideration went, as a whiff caught her attention.
"Damien! Damien! They've got real MREs here! Like, actual military stuff! I'm gonna check it out!" She ran off just like that.
And the day passed into the next.
Lilith gazed up at the authoritative Captain Juna in awe and hormone-fueled admiration. A drop of drool dribbled from her lips.
"Oh, Captain, my Captain, I would never disobey a word you say."
Though, as much as she wanted to haul ass climb onto the trucks, she had to find her partner. And discern what he truly felt about their situation... For Lilith, there was one easy way to find him. Climbing onto a small pile of boxes, she took in a deep breath. Forming a cone with her hands, she yelled,
"Damien! Get your butt over here so we can talk like big boys!"
Damien
Damien looked at the one named Shoku lectured him, was he being self centered that he didn't even think of how the others must of felt? As shoku stopped talking Damien's gaze did not leave the ground. Was he embarrassed? ashamed? was not wanting to be apart of a war so foreign to these people? No, it wasn't that it was foreign it was that this was the only option that didn't just make them waiting to be killed. Should he follow suit? be another cog in this war? another possible body? Gods, he hated thinking like this, it was times he wished he was like Lilith, just take things as they come and not over think things like he was doing now.
Damien! they got MRE's here! like, actual military stuff! I'm gonna check it out!
Ok, maybe wishing he was like Lilith was a little off base, "Lily," he says in his usual stern tone as he chased after Lilith, "those aren't for you! Lily!"
The next day Damien was spending his time thinking of Shoku's words, there was a certain shame that washed over. Either join them in a war or stay in one of their shelters. It was a non choice, fight a war or wait to die either out in the world or in one of their shelters. Either way, they die, "Jesus, Damien, get your mind of this funk." he says to himself as he rubs both his hands through his hair. He sighs one last time and looks at one of the trucks, "Die doing something that could change the world or just die...a non choice." he took a single step towards a truck when he suddenly heard his name being called. When he looked he saw Lilith standing on some boxes shouting, "really, Lily." he says with a sign and walks towards her.
"OI!" Damien calls back looking up at her, "Do you really need to yell like that? I mean really." he crosses his arms across his chest before pointing at one of the trucks, "they are getting ready to leave, hurry up and lets get on before they leave us." he blinks and adds, "Lily, stop drooling over the commander you're being rude! and kinda gross..."
Lumian kept one eye on Lilia as they moved from the boats to the trucks. He always did, but after the time they spent apart he was more focused on the task than usual. Yamor, he'd never even considered going here, the kingdom was much too cold for his tastes. But, well, he was here now, might as well make the best of it. He was used to having his life uprooted, forced to move from place to place after that faithful day in Floramante. He was used to leaving his belongings behind, though his hip felt particularly empty without the revolver he usually carried there.
Lilia on the other hand, she was just as used to moving around as he was, that much was true. But this was only the second time her regular daily life had been completely ripped away from her. He glanced over again before sighing softly. He'd leave her to her conversation for now, planning to catch up with her on the truck.
He turned to Rin as the man approached, smiling casually at the question. "I wonder, miss noblewoman made a few good points." He replied, gesturing over with a wave of his hand. "Besides, it only takes one of the weaker ones cracking to bring this whole rebellion to its knees. Even if we succeed, this lot doesn't exactly strike me as capable in the governing department. But..." He met Rin's eyes. "Well, I don't particularly care. These guys want to kill the king, and I'll be damned if I'm not present to watch that piece of shit draw his last breath."
