Fantasy The Great War

Over a hundred Years ago, there was a balance of power, one that had existed for a millennia. While there were the occasion skirmish or border war, the world seemed to have entered an age of peace and prosperity. This Balance was upset by a revolution in Adrana, which put a new, and very aggressive, government in power, which was headed by an equally aggressive emperor. While some nations began a military build-up, none of them compared to the new empire's military build up. It quickly invaded its neighbors, conquering lands at an unprecedented rate.


Over Half of the continent was overtaken, before the Empire's advance was halted. The fighting would go on at a stalemate for another 5 years, before a truce was agreed upon. Since that Truce was signed, 143 Years ago, most of the world has been in a cold war, between the Empire, and the Federation of Free States. Each side pushed to be more prepared for war than the other, developing deadly new technology and keeping massive militaries. The latest innovations originally meant for war have transformed the world, causing it to turn to skies. Massive Airships, both used for war and peace time actives, roam the skies, and planes are nearing ubiquity.


Advances in the arcane arts have been compounded with the advances of technology, reshaping the everyday lives of people, in the Empire, the Federation and even the neutral nations. However, the shadow of war still looms and many know it is only a matter of time before the world is thrown into a war the likes of which have never been seen. Even now, the major powers have begun the steps to war, using sky-pirates to raid each other's ships and incite conflict between neutral nations and the opposing super power.

I'm curious about the narrative though. Specifically, I'm curious about how involved would created characters (by players) be in the grander machinations leading to whatever major event that plays out in this particular setting. Could characters be, say, a Grand Minister of some description in the Empire who directly influence events leading to an actual war? Or would characters have to be the 'little people' directly affected by the major events that play out behind the scenes, and then developing themselves via said events?
 
Fascinating! Definitely looking forward to this! Especially how our characters would fit into a such a grandiose scheme!
 
You are allowed to be higher ups in the various factions, just be sure to play the role well. Of course, you may also be smaller people and just experience the world through the Common Eye.
 
So the culture overall will have more of 1920s, 1930s and 1940s feel, since most of the technology will be of that era. Most mythical creatures are allowed, however the dominant species is human, and they are by far the most common of any of the races. Airship armaments will be similar to the armaments of World War era warships, and planes will be propeller driven. The most common type pf magic would be healing, since the medical field will be quite large, due to the massive population, however there are still other types that exist.

Oh... Things are only getting more and more interesting! But simply for clarification, what are (more or less) the types of magic that are allowed? Or maybe you can make a list stating which types aren't?

Well nothing crazy powerful. Typically the kind of magics you'd see in like skyrim or dark souls, like fire spells or some sort of barrier. I am basically just on an ask if its okay, because as long as it doesn't seem overpowered, odds are it will be okay. You will have a sort of mana limit, and if you go past that limit and do not give time to recharge your magic, you will quickly become exhausted, much like an athlete that has performed beyond their limits.
 
Oooh (:3) How about that technology and magic, as in how has it been merged together in their development. Elemental bullets? Engines powered by magic? Magically enchanted locks (which adds another layer of protection on top of a traditional lock, perhaps?).
 
The Fuel Source that drives larger airships will be of magical origin, since it would yield an immense amount of energy, and yes there would be elemental bullets, but they would not be in military use since most of the major militaries will have opted for mass producing standard bullets. Medical technology will be very much integrated with magic, causing the medical field to actually surpass modern medicine in terms of what can actually be fixed.


The various races will also have advantages and disadvantages. For example, Elves are much more magically capable, but physically they are weaker than Humans. Humans are very much all rounders and Jacks of All trades.
 
P.S could we create a third faction against both the federation and the empire like the USSR/the Comintern irl ... ?

Yes, however they would not quite be a superpower like the Empire or Federation.

Yes, and everyone can end up still using magic or technology. I'd say a dwarf's weakness would be movement speed and agility.

Indeed. However, their knowledge in the field of machinery is unmatched. Therefore I'm sure they'll compensate their physical disability by building geared constructs to ride on.

If they can afford it, then yeah. The Species are very integrated, much like how modern society is now more of a mosh-pit of cultures and races.

Ah... I see... That's an interesting allegory to modern society.
 
Any person of any race can be very powerful, so long as you use them correctly and play them to their advantages.
 
Now i have a question for you guys: How do you prefer your airships? Do you like them to be designed more like actual ships, or do you prefer Zeppelins?
 
I would definitely prefer actual ships over zeppelins - the latter just feels tame by comparison, less exciting. That, and I haven't exactly seen a modern battleship flying around in the sky yet, so that's something cool to think about, I feel!
