StrixDesmodus

Totally human, I swear!
  • If you don't understand what somebody else means, ask for clarification. There is no shame in it, and if anybody gives you flak about it then it is not your fault.
  • Hostility on our side of the fourth wall is needless. If you cannot discuss matters in a decent fashion then you are reprehensible.
  • Insensitive language belongs to insensitive characters. Ableist, racist, ageist, sexist, or otherwise essentialist language is prohibited from third person narrations. If you use it by accident, or if it's something that doesn't have connotations that are too bad, it can be excused, since many people don't know any better ways to phrase things. I won't hold it against you as long as I know it's an honest mistake.
  • Differences in style or creative ability are welcome here. Write script style, novel style, or anything outside and in between; Be as loquacious or laconic as you please.
  • You may not control another person's character, or make big changes to them without the consent of the roleplayer that made them.
  • You may make as many characters as you want.
  • Please do not make any characters younger than 10 years.
  • Please give your characters reasonable ages. Lifespan differences are allowed, but please no thousand-year-old student or adolescent Detective.
  • The list of possible creatures is not comprehensive, but I retain the right to reject certain creatures or ask that they be modified. If you want a specific creature type to be listed, ask and ye shall most likely recieve. Outright angels and demons are banned from this rp.
  • You may contribute your ideas for subplots, lore, and other stuff, but please run it by me first.
  • Please stay with this roleplay as long as you can, and do not permanently leave while your character is interacting with somebody else's.
  • Wait at least four minutes after the last in-character post to make your own in-character post.
  • If you have any other questions, feel free to ask and I'll answer when I can, and update the rules if need be. No worries, I'll let everybody know when the rules are updated, and the amendments will appear both in this post and in an additional one.

Overview of Magic in Canada

While the Canadian government has been historically aware of the existence of magic, a treaty was made between Magical Society and the government to (among other things) grant secrecy to Magical Society as long as they handle most of their own problems and refrain from interacting with most nonmagical citizens without hiding their magic. As a result of this treaty, Magical Society has been granted land, which has been made into secretive towns such as Barrowwood where magical folks don't have to hide what they are, magic-wise.

Magical Society in Canada is partially self-governing, though the authorities of the magical world have no jurisdiction outside their allotted land. Not all magical lands, even within the same province, are ruled by the same government. Barrowwood is a part of a small federation, currently ruled by Queen Dierdre II. She's known for her bureaucracy, but is otherwise well-liked.

Barrowwood School of Magic

Located in the central Ontario town it's named after Barrowwood is about average as far as magic schools go. There, middle and secondary students learn to develop their powers alongside other subjects such as History and Science.
The school is divided into three houses that are named after native plants: Spicebush, Elder, and Thistle. Students are placed in these houses based on their magical traits and abilities.
  • Spicebush- Humans with magical capabilities, but no other apparent magical traits
  • Elder- Shapeshifting and other such humanlike creatures with other magical traits in addition to their abilities. (Satyrs, werewolves, vampires, etc.)
  • Thistle- Students who do not show magical abilities at the time of enrollment, but are still affiliated with Magical Society. May be late bloomers, or just plain unable to use magic. Can be any creature, not just humans

Creature Examples

While by no means comprehensive, this is a list of Species your characters might be.
  • Sorcerer
Though they are considered to be human, sorcerers come to develop magical abilities like many nonhumans, usually between the ages of seven and ten and less commonly as old as sixteen.
  • Vampire
Characterized in appearance by pointed ears and canine teeth, vampires require daily consumption of blood to remain healthy. Vampires are able to turn other creatures into vampires with a bite, though this can be suppressed by various means. Vampires can live indefinitely, recovering from almost any injury or disease without actively using magic to heal themselves; However, this can take a lot of energy and nutrition to achieve, meaning that a vampire without sufficient resources may enter a state of cryptobiosis if seriously sick or injured.
  • Werebeast
A werebeast usually looks human, with one or maybe two features of the animal they resemble in their beast form, which generally looks like a human sized or slightly larger, bipedal carnivore. Their beast form may be taken at will, or involuntarily during full moons and eclipses. A werebeast's shapeshifting abilities are usually the first manifestation of magic, and involuntary transformations do not occur until they develop their magical powers.
  • Dullahan
There are rumors that the progenitor of this species is a being vastly more powerful than his descendents, and that he is the harbinger of death as either a psychopomp or a soul-stealing monster. Whether or not this is true, a dullahan as is known to exist bears only this superficial resemblance to the Dullahan of legend: Having a head which is detached from the rest of themself, which can see for a long distance even in the dark. Dullahans are very uncommon, and they usually stick to areas governed by Magical Society since it's almost impossible for them to appear human.

A Non-comprehensive list of roles. Roles in orange must be filled before the roleplay can start.
  • The Thief - Open -
Older sibling of the Recipient. Due to their sibling's seeminly complete inability to use magic, they have striven to find a way to help them with this problem. Upon discovering that magic can be taken from those with magical ability so that someone without it can use it, they take to stealing magic for their sibling. Problematically, the stolen magic seems to go away completely after about a week, meaning that they have to continuously take magic for sibling in order for them to keep using it.
  • The Recipient- Taken by @Blackrose7 - Janet Decaro
Younger sibling of the Thief, student at Barrowwood. All their life, they had waited for their magical abilities to work, but even past the age where most people start to get their magical abilities, and even past the point where they might be called a late-bloomer, they show no signs of being able to use magic. Their older sibling, the Thief, eventually learns to steal magic for them, but each person's magic that they receive doesn't last long.
  • The Detective - Open -
This private investigator has been tasked with investigating the growing problem of stolen magic. When they find out that students at Barrowwood, the Sleuths, are also trying to investigate, they become concerned for the students' safety and try to discourage them from getting involved. May appear later than sooner, depending on the preferences and ideas of whoever's character takes this role.
  • The Miscreant - Open -
Having witnessed the Thief stealing magic, they try every which way to get the Thief to teach them the secret to taking another person's magic, but to no avail.
  • The Confidante - Taken by Kitteh Kitteh -
Best friend of the Recipient, they are aware of how the Recipient got their new magic. They are willing to keep the secret despite worries of the magic theft getting out of hand, if only to stay friends with the Recipient.
  • The Sleuths - Unlimited -
These students are trying to investigate the magic losses, but eventually butt heads with the Detective, who worries for their safety. Even after being admonished by the Detective, most of the Sleuths do what they can to find out why people have been losing their magical powers.
  • The Diverters - Unlimited -
Those who keep the Sleuths from their investigations, whether out of concern for their wellbeing or to intentionally cover up the truth. May be a staff member, student, or perhaps a relative or friend of the Thief or Recipient. Could also be a concerned or corrupt government official. The possibilities are endless. This role may be major or minor, depending on the roleplayer's preference.
