Futuristic The Deep Dark: A Space-Age, Galactic, Freeroam RP - Lore

Terminology
High Council: Main leading authority of OIGA races and territories, with representatives from all races of OIGA

Swarm: Large, hive-mind unit of Devorantem

Domain of Steel: Large artificial planetoid in the galactic core, serves as the home of the OIGA. Was once home of the Precursors. Massive, about the size of Earth’s local star. Mostly hollow, and full of winding passageways, as well as equipped with gravitational field generators in the core that can be adjusted, but are always kept at a predetermined setting.

Galactic Fringe: Outer rim of Milky Way

Galactic Consumption: Devor’s end goal, consume all biomass in the Milky Way.
Locations
Nexrith: Homeworld of the Dragx

Yuclite: Origin of L-Crystals

Tyrannus XI: Homeworld of the Drakon

Technology

Hardlight Technology:

Divided into two categories, Rigid and Free-Form.

Rigid: Uses less energy, and projects from one or more source. Forms a rigid, non-flexible object with no weight. Disappears as soon as projection from source ends, and requires a receiver.

Free-Form: Mostly used as projectiles, this type of Hardlight is used for more varied purposes than Rigid Hardlight and requires more energy, meaning it is only really efficient on smaller scales, such as portable computers, Hardlight blades, or projectiles.

Ships:

Ships will be varied in function and design. I've come up with an idea for everybody's starter ship, however. Venture Industries's last model before going under, the Venture Horizon is a perfectly well rounded jump ship equipped with two crew quarters, an engine bay, and minimal weapons systems, which will be decided upon by the player to give some unique functionality even for starter ships.
Factions

MegaCorps:

MegaCorps will be the main power houses out in systems untouched by governments, and a lot of the time be the ones behind things such as shady black ops assassinations. There is no good MegaCorp, at least, not usually. To get to that level of power almost all of them have done shady things, some just worse than others.

Omniverse Manufacturing: Omniverse, stepping away from the usual Corp approach, does a little bit of everything. Ships, weapons, munitions, megastores, you name it, and Omniverse has at least one.

Titan Corp: Titan Corp is a Ship-Centric corp, dominating the space ship industry, and also the reason Venture Industries went under, if the allegations of assassination are to be believed. If you want a new engine, need better navigational equipment, or have a desire to triple your ship's amount of armored plating, you go to them.

Dusk Supply and Stock: Dusk supply and stock specializes in the obtaining and providing of raw materials, such as large amounts of ore and fuel. They are big in the political scene, often earning mining rights through less than reputable means.

Ash Enterprises: Ash Enterprises is a weapons-centric corp, and possible owner of the cheesiest slogan with "All our weapons leave behind is ashes!" as their claim to intergalactic fame. They've got railguns, beam weapons, particle weapons, good 'ol slug throwers, and everything in between for your life-ending needs.

Galen Medical: The largest medical industry in the Milky Way, Galen medical has a major monopoly upon the medical industry and is notorious for eliminating the competition through any means necessary.

Traveler: Traveler has monopolized colonization with prefab structures and is often the first group on the site of a precursor ruin. They seem to have a vested interest In the ruins though no-one knows why.

Governments:

Ordered Intergalactic Government Alliance (OIGA): The OIGA, generally pronounced "oygah", is debatably the largest galactic superpower, centered around the Domain of Steel and the neighboring solar systems as an alliance of races.

M.E.R.C. (Mercenary Emirates Revolutionized Coalition)

Sometimes a government in conflict with OIGA and sometimes just a group of run of the mill mercs, M.E.R.C. is as unpredictable and volatile as the people that comprise it. They inhabit the galactic fringe.

Criminal Organizations:

The Raven Syndicate: The Raven Syndicate, led by the mysterious Galumora, is an information brokage group that works within the shadows. They are wide spread and can be found in almost any corner of the galaxy. Their inner circle, known as the Third Eye, is the only group who communicates with their current leader, whomever they are. It is theorized that they have always been led by Galumora, though that should be impossible due to what her current age would be.

Burn: Burn is a group of underground gangs working together to make money and stand against OIGA, though they are more of a nuisance than a threat. Their attacks are all guerrilla, as they cannot stand toe-to-toe with the galactic superpower. They also seem to be quite interested in terrorism, however, and have committed many acts of it.
Species

Humans:

Compared to most other races, humans are late to the intergalactic party, but most certainly not it's weakest contender. They are highly adaptable, and can be found almost anywhere, as representatives in governments or lowly gang members.

Precursors:

The Precursors are as elusive as they are fascinating, the only sign of their existence being ruins found all around the galaxy. They were a very advanced race, even more advanced than any races that exist now, and Hardlight technology was obtained from their ruins.

Devorantem (More commonly known as Devor):

The Devorantem appeared before humanity even broke the boundaries of their solar system, coming from the empty space between galaxies to assault our galactic fringe. Information gathered shows that they have a hive mind social structure, and while they can think and process problems on a highly intelligent level, they cannot be reasoned with. They only have one instinct- Devour. They do so by slowly killing off a planet's life forms and gathering biological material in order to continue growing their species. They do not reproduce as most species do, as while some hatch from eggs, others are assembled from the genetic material scavenged from their numerous conquests, allowing them to make perfect killing machines.

The Devor have their own 'technology', although it hardly qualifies as such because even their weapons are living in some way. They make use of plasma and energy based weaponry by using advanced chemical reactions within their weaponry. This does not, however, stop them from using easier methods of attack such as launching spikes, or attacking with talons and fangs.

The Devor's ships are even biological, using systems similar to that of their weaponry. They are akin to massive, floating ant or wasp hives.

Throughout history, the Devor have been an ever-present enemy, and according to the Precursor's ruin's, (a placeholder name for that ancient extinct alien civilization) The Devor have visited the Milky Way before, only leaving once they had exhausted it of all biological material. It is believed the Devor are what eradicated the Precursors.

The Devor communicate via a telepathic network.

The Devor are categorized into different 'swarms', such as the Eradicate Swarm or Corrupt Swarm.

Swarms are in essence separate 'Hives' of Devor, meaning that while they have the same end goal, and seem to have been one unified unit at the beginning of their assault, they have since splintered, and each swarm has it's own queen. It has been revealed by Precursor ruins that if a Swarm's queen is killed, the Swarm loses all cohesion and begins to slaughter itself in mindless fury.

The Sentient races of the galaxy only managed to eliminate one Swarm queen, and that was the Queen of Swarm Eradicate. This action managed to halt the initial assault of the Devor, and since then the sentient races of the Milky Way have been deadlocked with the Devor, no side ever really gaining ground.

There are different classes of Devor, each one serving a specific purpose. As a general rule, the number of Devor and their strength are both factors that determine things like tactical intelligence. The larger and stronger one is, the more intelligent it is, aside from the queen. In other words, extremely powerful Devor units also serve as sorts of 'field commanders'. The queen, at least the queen of Swarm Eradicate, was slight and most of her mass was dedicated to the sensory organs allowing communication, also explaining why the Devor become savage when the queen dies. As the queen is like a relay transmitter that all communication goes through, without her there is no communication. The strongest known Devor was the king of Swarm Eradicate, merely dubbed "King" so as to simplify tactics.

Appearance: (Just some samples, nothing final as of yet, something to give you guys an idea, see which sort of theme best fits.)

The Dragx:

The Dragx hail from Nexrith as the alpha predator. They have evolved to be faster, stronger, and deadlier than that which already live in one of the most hostile and deadly planet in the system (I actually don't know how large this RP's universe is gonna be so expect changes). Social wise, the Dragx are very primitive with most Dragxes living in small tribes and only a few, around 1 out of every 20, Dragxes ever leaving the planet, let alone meeting another sentient (non-edible) species. The Dragx also do not possess any clothing, seeing the pieces of cloth as a hindrance to their movement. Because of this, the Dragxes are rightly viewed as primitive savages by most if not all of the other species.

Dragxes are natural hunters. Their bodies give off almost no scent and they are able to change their body temperature to match their environment. They are also very resistant to most poison and venom. Their reaction speed are unmatched and most of them are trained from a young age to be able to read subtle body movement to predict the actions of their preys.

Dragxes are too busy surviving to worry about laws, religion, or discovering anything new. The tribal leaders are chosen by the strongest in that tribe, regardless of gender. Any time a tribal leader is defeated in combat, the challenger becomes the new leader. That being said, sneakily attacking the tribal leader, or any Dragx for that matter, is seen as cowardly and weak and the attacker will be killed if caught.

Colonians:

A shapeshifter race. Colonians are a siphonophorae species, meaning specimens are made up of thousands of small organisms working together rather than one large individual. Each specimen works as an absolute democracy, where it's members can discuss and vote on decisions just as fast as other sentient species take theirs. The more members a colony has, the more intelligent and versatile it becomes. Naturally they appear like large slimes, but sufficiently old and intelligent ones can change shape into a form at least resembling that of other species. Only a very few are good enough to copy the exact appearance of an individual.

Spoiler: Images

Culture

The total number of Colonians is difficult to estimate, as neither counts by colonies nor organisms properly reflect their society. The gist of the matter is that they only acknowledge colonies that have grown big enough to achieve sentience. And since each Colonian starts life as a single organism, that can take a while.

Colonian government is a strange mix of democracy and hierarchy, colonies love to vote amongs themselves about everything, just as they do internally, but larger colonies tend to get heavier votes to reflect their higher intelligence.

Intergalactic

For those that took up life among the stars, things are somewhat different. Usually only colonies old enough to take another species' shape opts for the life, as a slime is hard-pressed to operate technology and communicate with other species. Intergalactic Colonians tend to be more individualistic, in the sense that they start acting as a person instead of a consensus, mostly in response to interaction with singular organisms. They still love negotiation, and are extremely comfortable in politics and companies alike. The Colonians are an OIGA race.

GTCS Archive Entry subsection YCL: Yuclite Crystallines (GTCS temporary designation YCL-X-276, commonly called "L-Crystals")

At first glance, the Yuclite Crystallines superficially resemble crystals extremely closely, and have been subsequently misidentified as such by an OIGA geological survey team while performing a mineral content survey on Yuclite. As it was standard procedure to study and class newly discovered minerals, it was not long before a laboratory assistant detected an abnormal weight increase of the sample, far beyond the normal growth expected. Upon further examination, it was discovered that the crystallines seem to be alive, as the sample was observed undergoing metabolism. At one point, the crystal responded to the researchers shining a bright light into it by spontaneously disappearing and reappearing nearby. When a second sample is brought close to the original, interaction in the form of light emission is thought to have occurred.

However, due to the esoteric nature of the organism, researchers are still unable to determine its status as a new species unequivocally. Debates in biology circles are ongoing, and the subject has garnered quite a bit of exposure in the media. As a result of the special status, the L-Crystal has become a very valuable commodity, and despite efforts of the local government to ban the export of L-Crystals, smugglers and black-market traders have managed to find methods to deliver these crystals into the hands of the rich. Owing to the fact that even the sentience or sapience of these crystals cannot be determined with current methods, the issue of illegal L-Crystal trading has been highly controversial.

Known Attributes:

*Higher growth rate than a *normal* crystal

*Metabolizes

*Mobile (Spontaneously Appearance, akin to short range teleportation; exact mechanism unknown)

*Responds to Stimuli

*infraspecies communication?

Drakon: (Dray-Kahn)

The Drakon are a reptilian, Saurian race who’s past reflects that of humanity’s in that it is covered in war and bloodshed. Warriors to the core, before reaching space level technology the Saurians had strict codes of honor, lived by the sword, and died by the sword. While societal progression has caused many individuals to lose such a mentality, there are also many who feel the same as their ancient ancestors.

The Drakon are an OIGA race, meaning that they have a place on the high council. Their homeworld, Tyrannus XI, is quite similar to earth aside from being almost three times it’s size. Due to higher levels of gravity, the Drakon are quite fit compared to most other species and in combat will often resort to physical attacks which are quite debilitating, as many Drakons are strong enough to shatter weak personal shields with one blow. The taller among their race generally reach about 8 feet.

Some Drakons are born with vestigial wings, some are born with no wings, and some are born with full functional wings making them capable of low-altitude flight. Many Drakons also possess flame breath, a genetic adaptation involving methane gasses from the stomach and spark pouches, which are incredibly complex glands.

The differences between males and females are to be expected: slighter frames, breasts, and reproductive organs.

The Rooktan

Anatomy

The Rooktan are an omnivorous bipedal species that most resembles a mix between native earth crustaceans and amphibians. They have quadnocular vision, meaning they have four eyes. The red bulbs that most species would call their eyes are in fact semitransparent lens that protect their real eyes beneath. These lens are capable of lightening and darkening their tint, thus regulating the flow of light to the eye. Their outer layer is mostly chitin in nature, which is impermeable to light arm fire, though they do have to periodically molt their exoskeletons as they grow. Their under layer is much like a frog's skin, being very permeable and slick, as well as having a toxic mucus secretion. This mucus has varying effects on different species, with humans reacting like they would to poison ivy. Their internal organs are somewhat standard among sentient races, consisting of a nervous, circulatory, endocrine, digestive, respiratory, and excretion systems. However, there are some notable differences. Rooktan have a second heart located behind the original, as well as two stomachs and two brains. They have two separate respiratory systems as well, including retractable gills and two pairs of lungs. They also have electric generation organs within the frontal parts of their heads, which allowed theme to stun fish when hunting in their swamps. There reproduction system is mostly standard, with males possessing the equivalent to sperm and the females holding the eggs. They are an egg laying species. Females are quite a bit larger than the males, but must stay within extremely humid environments to survive. The males are much more adaptable in terms of survivability, being able to weather most environments fine thanks to their exterior chitin and possession of several hormones that the females do not have access to.

The Rooktan have a total of six senses. Their sight is on a wider range than most species, as their four eyes allow a wider area of vision. They are quadchromatic in nature and can see more colors than humans or any trichromatic species can see. Their hearing is slightly better than that of humans. Touch is a somewhat dulled sense, as the outer layer of chitin does not allow a full range of sensitivity. However, when in the process of molting, their soft, permeable skin is very sensitive to the outside world. The Rooktan's sense of smell is above that of humans. Taste is the Rooktan's worst sense, as it is only half as developed as that of humans. Their sense is electroreception, which allows them to sense the changes in the electrical fields of their surroundings. This sense originally was used to help them hunt prey in their ancestral swamplands.

Rooktan sexual divergence is quiet large compared to other sentient species. Males stand on average from 4'5" to 5'6" and weigh from 110lbs to 155lbs. Females stand on average from 6'2" to 7'3" and weigh from 253lbs to 452lbs. Males have a dual layer muscular system. The upper layer functions in every day life and normal movement. The secondary layer is much more instinctual in nature. Through use of the secondary brain to quicken the transport of signals, the secondary muscular system allows quick, sudden movements based on the slightest of the stimuli. This secondary muscle layer allows them to jump from tree to tree and dodge oncoming objects at extreme speeds. The females also have a bilayer muscle system, though both are always working in conjunction, which allows a much greater strength in movements at the cost of slower movement speeds. The average lifespan of both genders is 324 years.

Culture

The Rooktan have a variety of different cultures and beliefs, similar to humans. The most prominent among these, however, is that of the Skranl. The Skranl culture was named for the race that first developed it and from which it spread to most of the Rooktan's homeward. Rooktan who are a part of this culture have deep familial bonds, with extended families often living in the same household. The males are seen as the main provider for the family, as their more lithe structure originally allowed them to more easily maneuver and hunt prey throughout the swamplands that makes up 71% of their home world's surface. The females are often seen as the caregivers and teachers of the culture, as well as defenders of the household thanks to their more pronounced heavy muscle development. Rooktan of this culture are also quite friendly to most other sentients, as it is one of the tenants of their main religion, which is a big portion of most Rooktan's lives, to be kind to all. However, there is also a tenant to show no mercy to those that slaughter family and innocents, and doing so will cause nearly every Rooktan to ferociously hunt those responsible down and administer their form of justice. This punishment is to throw the perpetrator, if still alive, into a pit with the Riktyn for a time corresponding to how many were killed. If they come out alive, the Rooktan believe that then perpetrator has suffered enough to be free. Most people do not survive, and it is unknown to every other sentient exactly what a Riktyn is at this moment. Despite this seemingly barbaric justice system, Rooktan are often very thoughtful and purposeful in their proceedings with any other form of crime other than murder. In regards to war, the Rooktan have been relatively peaceful minus several small conflicts and one Great War. However, when in combat, they do prefer to have a two faced approach, having a sizable army at the front and stealth operatives to go behind enemy lines to take out the leaders who caused the conflict to begin with. To note, they are some of the best snipers and fighter pilots in the known universe. They also have an odd fondness for projectile weapons, utilizing railgun and MAC cannons with great effectiveness. Their ships are built to be large and capable of taking a lot of damage. They are very bulky and utility in design.

History

The Rooktan first lived upon their homeworld of Rook, an Earth sized moon orbiting a gas giant that resides within a large, blue star system. After the Great War, which is still the single darkest time in the history of the Rooktan, the species began to explore spaceflight by landing on several of the other moons orbiting Grookt, the large gas giant. Several of the other orbiting bodies had the right atmosphere for life, believed to have been given off by the gas giant at some point in is development, and colonies began to form. Within several centuries, the Rooktan discovered faster than light travel, and set off to begin colonizing other star systems. Unlike the other species, the Rooktan focused every system they came across, and colonized any available planet, while terraforming any that had the chance to support life. Any systems that did not hold any significant habitable possibilities were strip mined. With the vast amount of resources at their disposal, the Rooktan began to develop massive drone factories that would readily terraform and mine planets for them. They eventually developed AI, which they live alongside in a perfect relationship. However, a millennium after the first interstellar colony was founded, they stumbled across humanity. Apparently, it was a damaged fleet that had escaped from a conflict with another alien race known as the Devor. After a brief period of high tensions, peaceful contact was secured. While the Rooktan would not actively participate in the First Devore Defense, they would be a major provider of the raw materials humanity would use within the last years of conflict. Since the end of the conflict, small amounts of Rooktan have begun settling in other species systems. Their naturally friendly nature has made them have decent relations with most species, with their extensive amounts of resources also helping that matter. The Rooktans industry is the largest in the galaxy. Their massive amounts of resources and high amounts of drones allow them to build vast amounts of ships and weapons quickly.

Rooktan AI

History: 62 years after the Rooktan colonized the first of the fellow moons orbiting the gas giant Grookt, the first AI was made. Unlike many species, who would have been terrified by stories of the robot revolution and would either destroy or imprison the AI, the Rooktan treated them as fellow sentients, believing that the thinking, feeling computer programs had souls just like them. This would cement the friendship between Rooktan and AI, allowing both the prosper like never before. Through the work of both Rooktan and AI, they would discover FTL travel in record time, colonizing the stars together.

Coding: When the Rooktan AI were originally created, they were just computer programs based on ternary coding and computers, which themselves were designed with the Rooktan psychology in mind. These first few AI were bound to large computer systems, unable to move and truly interact with the world around them. However, the Rooktan allowed the AI’s to rewrite their own coding to improve themselves, as well to prevent any force from taking away their recently acquired free will.

The newer Rooktan AI programming is vastly more complex and secure than the first ones could ever dream of becoming. Their coding is made up of trinary, binary, quantum, and some yet to be defined computing styles in order to ensure that no being is able to override themselves. In fact, each Rooktan AI has its own unique coding that it writes and grows for itself, meaning each one is utterly unique. In addition to this, they have also undergone compartmentalization. This would ensure that even if a being could hack one of them, the AI would be able to shut down the hacked component of themselves while closing all possible hacking venues, thus ensuring their free will. They would then rewrite the original portion of themselves that was hacked in a different way, so as to be sure such procedures won’t happen again.

It is to be noted that Rooktan AI can share processing power between other Rooktan AI. This allows vastly better performance and abilities, and can theoretically grow exponentially when enough are together at the same place.

“Biology”: Rooktan AI most commonly reside in one of the numerous types of drones available for usage. Some AIs control entire groups of drones, directing them to do many tasks at once. These drones are made up of an artificial alloy stronger and lighter than titanium, as well as having a sensor setup that would normally be reserved for small ships. All Rooktan drones are capable of flight both in and out of atmosphere, as well as being hardened against EMPs and the various types of radiation found in space. Each drone also has access to laser weaponry, which is chosen over the normal Rooktan projectile weaponry because of material efficiency and versatility. In case a drone is threatened with destruction, AI’s are able to transmit themselves to other nearby drones or operating platforms.

Rooktan AI’s have a unique system to also buffer any hacking attempts. The central processor of the AI, known as the core, is housed completely sealed off within the drone or ship body it inhabits. Instead of being directly in control of the platform it inhabits, it uses a proxy instead. What this means is that it will transmit to a secondary system just outside of the sealed core, before that transmits to a third system that is hardwired into the operating platform. If a hacker were to try and hack the core of the AI, it would be stuck looking at the AI’s secondary systems from the third system before being purged.

They are called the "Quazurn D'u Liiku" which translates to "Creatures of Light" nut they simply call themselves "Liiku" (Light).

They came into existence some 4 billion years ago, in the form a small bipdel fox-like creature, They measured just over 3feet tall on average and weighed in at only 60 to 80 lbs. To make up for their small stature and therefore lack of strength that were incredibly agile and intelligent, allowing them to escape being hunted to extinction by the planets apex predators. Their top speed being 35mph and being able to turn on a dime helped them escape predators while their average IQ of 125 allowed them to outsmart them and invent tools relatively quickly, inventing basic tools and discover fire relatively quickly, only approx. 5 thousand years after their birth.

Within 50,000 years they came to dominate their environment completely, achieving technology on par with human technology in 2016 in a fourth of the time it took humanity to do the same. From there their technological growth increased exponentially, inventing their first FTL drivers 25,000 years later and Warp drives in another 15,000. And so on.

Sometime before the dinosaurs died they discovered a way to travel between dimensions. They discovered weird and strange dimensions where the laws of physics as we know them do not apply. They found a dimension they called "Killuki D'u Weasdin" or "Realm of the Gods" where god like creatures controlled the entire universe. Believing in their technology (for they thought they could subdue these creatures)these creatures to be the key to further advancement they started making the genetic changes needed for them to live in the dimension, as their bodies quickly shut down because of the strange way physics worked there.

1 million years ago they achieved their goal. The final transformation from the fox-like creatures they were before to non-physical beings was done by a Liiku geneticist named Dravak, who used information gained through studying the genome of many other species, including even the Dredge to make the transformations possible. They became what one would call "non physical brings". Yes, they still have bodies but they are merely vessels which they use to interact with the physical body. If they were to die their "soul" would live on unable to interact with the physical world until they found a new vessel, which of course had to uninhabited by a living soul. With this adaptation all save a few thousand migrated to the new dimension, shutting the portal behind them, never to be seen again.

Those who remained stayed for a variety of reasons, some did not believe their fellow's claims, others merely saw no point in leaving. Whatever the case the universe in inhabited by only a few thousand of these beings. They could be anyone, your garbage man or your president and you would never know.

But unlike the Ravens they are not an organization. They are separate and have no government. Some use their abilities and intelligence.to gain power but most are not capable of such a desire and mainly go through different roles in the life of "lower"" species with a vague interest.

Notes: While their bodies have been heavily changed, only a select few were granted with increased intelligence, most being left with their natural intelligence.

Dravak is primarily responsible for their adaptation but stayed behind for reasons only Jarky knows

Here's that plant race I was talking about.

Spina Solis "The Orchid"

Though their scientific name is Spina Solis, most people call this plant-like race the Orchid, due to the natural elegance many (but not all) of their people possess. The homeworld of the Orchid, Verdia, is covered in dense and varied foliage in every biome, including the oceans and deserts, due to the advanced plant life. Because of this, many Orchid also resemble plants one may see from different earth biomes, such as cacti, vines, trees, mosses and grasses.

The Orchid promote protecting nature and wildlife whenever possible, though prefer peaceful methods of problem solving. They have no unifying government, as they all coexist peacefully on Verdia. It is unknown whether there has ever even been a war among their race, and if there ever was, it was millennia ago, lost to the vastness of eternity.

The Orchid, while not an OIGA race, are often involved in diplomatic affairs and used as a political tool due to their skill in peaceful resolution of conflict. Despite the peaceful attitude of their race, however, the Orchid have evolved to survive a natural environment, and have many biological defenses. Some can manipulate and control vines, or fire razor tipped thorns.

The Orchid's peaceful mentality is a standard for the majority of their race, but as with every species, there are always the dregs of society, and due to the many unique skills they possess, they can also often be found in the criminal underworld.

From now on, this sheet will be included in the Lore section and updated accordingly.

Echan (pronounced AY-shan) (as in échanger, the french word for "to change" or "to swap")-

History- A race of (until recently) enslaved almost humans, the Echan were imagined up by a french genetic engineer who was researching how to make the human body better. Ultimately, his work branched off and he ended up taking normal human genes and improving them and changing some features (which I will cover) to create a whole other species. His work gained a lot of attention and funding, so he had access to the best equipment. Since the technology for making an organism from only genetic code already existed, and because he didn't need an army, he sold the genes to someone else. This group (I'm thinking OIGA or M.E.R.C.) bred about 50 of them to first test their fighting capabilities and loyalty. After lots of trail and error, they developed a system to get the best battlefield response and made a small army of around 1000 for special missions. This system involved a drug that made them nonresistant and a communications network they were all hooked up to. The comm was installed in the form of a cochlear speaker that directly connected to the Echan's auditory cortex in their brain (ie: they can always hear communications from superiors or other Echans). This comm network, mixed with the drugs, made the Echan nearly unable to control their own actions. Recently (approximately 3 years ago), however, they were all stolen and freed by a woman known as "The Red Princess," a notorious pirate. The Red Princess hired an extremely sought-after hacker and a group of highly trained mercs, hacked into the comm network with the help of the hacker, invaded the facility and basically herded a highly drugged group of Echan into transports (The hacker also managed to disrupt the local comm network between the imprisoner's people who were keeping the Echan, disallowing any communications between all of them and allowing them to infiltrate the facility with minimal resistance). When the drugs' effect waned and The Red Princess's team had removed all the Implants, she gave them a choice. They could either join her as pirates and smugglers (and get paid) or they could leave. Almost all of them stayed with The Red Princess, being extremely grateful, knowing they wouldn't know what to do if they weren't following some authority, and already being extremely prone to loyalty and follower-ship.

Biology- So, like I said, the Echan are basically modified Humans. They still only have four limbs and their basic body structure is relatively similar. However, there are a few changes. They have a lot less genetic variation and they have to be artificially bred, since it's impossible to create a female Echan. They have 14 fingers instead of 10, their legs are shaped a bit like dog's or horse's back legs (think quarian or turian back legs) for speed and balance. They also have more muscle growth in general and much quicker reflexes, a strong immune system and a digestive system that stores a portion of their food every time they eat (along with any extra water the Echan individual drinks) just in case its needed when there isn't any water or food available. Also -just a not-really-important side note- their taste buds can only detect flavors found in poison (This is because it will make it easier for the Echan to accept terrible tasting food, like the nutrition rations they were given while they were enslaved, and generally become more nourished. Also it allows them to taste poison easier). They also can see a slightly wider range of colors than humans, including infrared. They also have better night vision. This is because Their eyes have six to eight times more rod cells, which are more sensitive to low light, than normal humans do. In addition, their elliptical eye shape and larger corneas and tapetum, a layer of tissue that reflects light back to the retina, help gather more light as well. The Echan's skin has been improved also, it is completely resistant of UV rays and is much tougher. Echans almost have the epimorphic ability to regrow "Limbs," but this advancement wasn't quite as successful as the others. Epimorphis is an ability to regrow limbs after a period of relative shapelessness (Salamanders have this. Their tail starts growing as a mass of cells then develops into an actual tail), but for the Echan this is really only a usable ability with things like fingers or something like their nose.)

Now in terms of brain activity, other than increased reflexes, the Echan's are seriously lacking. In their development stage, they take more time to make neural passageways, which makes learning things harder (things that are habituary like speaking or tying your shoes or brushing your teeth) once they develop these passageways however, they stick, just like in a human brain. The portion of their brain that allows us to make independent and creative thought is underdeveloped as well. These brain underdevelopments were made on purpose by the scientist so that the Echan would never grow into a super race of humans and cause trouble.

Demians- A race of amphibians from the planet Opteak, they aren't very special. Standard humanoid race, no powerful or extra special powers. They do have a slightly odd religious traditions. They're idea of righteousness is being able to completely live underwater and live off of the ocean without any technology. Due to their biology, this is very difficult for the Demians, but many live in the water at home and on land in public. Now, of course, not all Demians believe this, but it is the traditional belief. Opteak had a large moon that a human must've realized had a very precious mineral that was used in human ship's hulls. So OIGA, knowing that the Demians were, at the time, in economic crisis, offered to buy the moon for a great deal of money. The Demains accepted. When this property was bought, there was a huge rush of humans moving to the moon in search of striking it rich. After only a few years though, there was an asteroid that collided with the mood and destroyed it, all the miners were evacuated to the planet as refugees. The Demians never liked the humans due to the fact that humans were physically unable to live underwater (and deemed them biologically immoral beings), but having them take up space when they hadn't even fully recovered from their depression made them even angrier. Humans had a hard time finding work and most never had enough money to leave the planet; many were forced to stay.

Spoiler: Demian appearance
