The Cycle of Life and Death (whitepaperplatesx Paddie)

PaddieCake

The Piggie Lord

Before anything there was Darkness, and there was Light.

And then there was Life.

And then there was Death...

In the beginning, there was nothing but chaos. Primitive matter -- uncontrollable, unstable -- clashed about. Within that maelstrom two beings were birthed. The Light and the Darkness. Ignis, the one of Light. The Creator. The Pure. Their counterpart, Malus. The one of Darkness. The Destroyer. The Corrupt. The two used their innate gifts to create and destroy. A natural pattern fell into place, one of equal parts creation and destruction. Between the two, the universe came into being. The galaxies emerged and were populated with the planets and the stars.

Ignis looked down from her realm above, Sursum, and saw that the universe that they had created was barren. Deep, in her core, she felt a sense a melancholia. They were not finished. Closing her hands, Ignis softly blew into them and created Life. The infant goddess was created out of everything that Ignis cherished. And Ignis adored her.

She swiftly brought passion and life, to the universe. Happening upon Earth she took a liking to the small, homely planet and settled there, finding a place of her own. She painted its surface with anything and everything she could conceive and conceptualize. From her fingertips the flora rose from the dust and the fauna took their first steps. She was content with herself and with what she had done. Being surrounded by her beautiful handmade family was all that she needed.

Life was Ignis' mistake. The balance had been skewed. The equation was left undone.

Malus looked up at their shared universe from the realm below, Deorsus, and grew furious. Seeing that Ignis had created something without his knowledge angered him. Especially since that something was a being with such unadulterated power. Malus slowly grew suspicious towards Ignis. He believed that Ignis was attempting to undermine his authority over the universe. Already with Life in existence Ignis held a clear advantage. Malus resented the possibility of Ignis gaining control over the universe and plotted a way to prevent it.

Confronting Ignis, Malus demanded that she create for him an empty vessel. One for him to mold out of his own essence. A being in his likeness. She repeatedly denied him. For she feared that if Malus made a god of destruction like himself, Life would take it poorly. Life was unused to having her creations taken from her. Ignis would protect her.

When the first mortals were formed by Life's hand, Ignis then understood that she needed a counterpart of her own. So, Ignis relented to Malus.

With the creation of death, the final part of the equation was written.

Death existed, he did not live, he could not. But he existed, and he saw, and he felt. Malus was the reason he existed, his purpose in existence was given to him, from the moment he was created.  Malus was his master, his teacher, he knew his purpose was to destroy. He was to take the creations living on Earth and take them away. He was awed by what he found when he caught his first glimpses of Earth and the creatures and beings Life had created, but the steely grip of Malus on his shoulder reminded him of who he was, what he was, why he existed. He appreciated the world he saw, but he knew it must be destroyed.

And so Death destroyed. As he walked the green grass turned brown behind him. As he touched tall trees, they shriveled beneath him, showering Death with its brown leaves. And when he neared the beings that inhabited the Earth they grew weak, if he touched them, they too fell. He left everything in his path cold, still, silent... And as he continued to exist, continued to destroy the creatures and plants around him he grew to enjoy the power he had over the living, to take that away from them.

He grew, from an empty shell, to a being filled with the desire t control the life around him, to take it, to destroy it, bend it to his whim. Malus was please, Malus was proud. The force of destruction he had so desperately wanted was doing what he so desired. Balance had been restored, destruction, chaos, it was once again equal to the purity and creation of Ignis, and he was pleased.

Death existed to destroy and he reveled in it. He was overjoyed, each step he took killed the living things beneath his feet, each outstretched arm fell another plant, animal, human being. Malus was pleased, and so to was Death.

Then he was free to destroy, all on his own, out from under the watchful eye and steely grip of Malus, and he got to see Life outside of his master's influence... And he hated it, he hated her. He wanted even more to destroy everything she created, and he set out to do just that...

It was not that she had become unhappy with what she had. She swore to that. Never, could she be so ungrateful. It was just that, for all the creatures that Life had surrounded herself with, she had grown. . . Tired of them? She really was not very sure how to describe what she felt towards them and it made her feel terrible.  She loved them with every fiber of her being, but they did not understand that and she supposed that, that was part of the reason. When in the presence of her Mistress, she felt wholly overwhelmed. Insignificant and not fit to be in her company. On the other hand, around the exquisite flora and fauna, Life at times could feel utterly detached from them.

She felt the wisps of loneliness for the first time in her existence and it gnawed at her. Eating her from the inside out. She was alone. Life was not one to wallow in self-pity though. She went to work. Creating something far more advanced than any of her previous works.

Water and soil meshed together in her palms and skillfully she crafted the model. One similar to her own physical form. Beings shaped like the Gods, but lesser as Life was not given the power to create Gods of her own. She mended their rough features and named the two Man and Woman. She blew life into the two of them and admired their bare figures upon the ground. Furless and scaleless. Smooth and silky to the touch. She grinned at the two. They were her most lovely creatures to date. Touching her lips to the man and woman, she blessed them. Not with the qualities of swiftness, or flight, or strength. Those were taken. Instead Life gave them the ability to walk upright as she could, and intellect and wisdom, both of which allowed them to surpass the animals amongst them who could only rely on instincts. Before her, the two stood and showered her with praise. She flourished under their admiring gazes. Plucking a strand of her hair, it shone like a ray of sunshine in the light. Life tied one end to Man's wrist and the other to Woman's. That way the two could never lose each other. They were the only ones of their kind after all.

No longer was Life lonely. Man and Women stayed by her side. Yet, even as they were superior to all other earthly creatures, they lauded her as supreme. Life only became more pleased as the humans grew in number on the land.

The pain appeared out of thin air and was negligible at first. It grew rapidly and spread. It was soon unbearable and she struggled to find the cause. An intangible force lead her to the beginning of the trail of destruction. The sight of it hurt her more than anything could have ever imagined.

Once supple green grass was brown and dry. Mighty trees looked haunted as they were now gnarled and splintered. The putrid scent of death made her collapse. Carcasses scattered across the expanse and wasted away. Life wept. As the tears cascaded down her tawny cheeks, she touched every dead thing around her, but no matter how hard she tried they would not come back to her. Her first lesson, what was dead could not be brought back to life

Trailing behind the evil force that brought ruin to her home, she created new life in its place. She had yet to catch up and see what was wreaking all of this havoc on her land, but when she finally did, she was too late.

Led back to to her humans, she could only watch in horror as the original Man and Women grew wrinkled and crumpled to the ground at his touch. In his wake they turned to dust and were scattered to the wind in his steps. "Death," The cowering humans whispered his name in panic, as if it would summon his return.

"Death." His name left her lips and she felt something she never had before. Fear.

Because of this, she removed herself from the place of the humans. What use was she to them? She could not protect them. She was unsure if she could even protect herself from his malevolence. Too fearful to even try, Life attempted to keep herself hidden from his view even as she replenished the life that he extinguished.

Death had not meant to kill the humans, at least not right away. He had been intrigued by the strange beings that looked so much like them.  He had merely wanted to get a closer look, but as he drew near, they grew old, weak, slowly decaying, but as he watched them slowly die, fade away to nothing, Death could only watch. He was ecstatic, but he also seemed to understand the fear he had created as he watched the humans dying, fleeing before Life could see him, but watching from afar.  He could see the sadness and fear in her eyes.

Every time Life created new beings Death would destroy them. Malus was pleased, to him it seemed that he had the upper hand. It was too easy, bringing down the living. His child...his pet, he had been doing more than Malus could have thought. He could not help but let pride swell up inside, he wanted to gloat. He wanted Ignis to see , a grin on his  face as he felt the power, the excitement of the chaos and fear swirling around them. Malus wanted Ignis to know the destruction her own creation, for him, had caused. He couldn't have been more proud. He watched the destruction his protege caused. While the decaying, rotting, massacre did nothing but disgust Life, Malus had found nothing but delight.

For Death, who had wanted nothing more than make Malus proud, to destroy, to create chaos and eternal despair, could not help but understand how much he was hurting Life and her creations.

"Do you honestly think it fair? She can create as she pleases? Who's to stop her from gaining too much power. Things need balance, you provide balance." Malus said in a whispery voice as Death voiced his concerns. His eyes were downcast as Malus spoke to him, Death understood, his duty was to keep balance by taking, it was his job to make sure things stayed equal, but Ignis was not pleased.

She could see that Death was taking Life's creations away faster than she could make them. She knew, deep down, that things needed to be balanced, she did not want to create another being and have Malus once again complain about inequality. She closed her eyes, she could not stand how terrible Life felt, watching as her creations die, but she knew it must be done. Instead she decided to give Life Time, Time to let Life's creations grow , to exist. Ignis created Time to live, Time before Death would steal Life's creations away.

As Death roamed Earth he found himself having more and more difficulty doing what he was supposed to. While many of those he neared would die as they were supposed, he found some to be far harder to kill. No matter how many times he reached out to them, trying to get them to crumble beneath his grip, they would not, only slowly aging, until Time relinquished her control over them, and would finally allow them to die...
