Futuristic The Adventures of the Inquisitor

Blink led James on a wild goose chase through the maze of hallways that made up the interior of the ship. In and out of the cargo bay, the med lab, and several other rooms, stopping now and then to sniff around. Finally they ended up in the kitchen, where Blink sat down in front of the refrigerator, looking expectantly between the captain and the door.

-------------------------------------

"You're a stowaway? I heard the captain talking about you. He knows you're here and he wants you here. You're one of them. You're not a stowaway."

"Oh, no. I'm not talking about right now. I'm talking about a different ship. I got off of it earlier this morning." Zeph explained. Yeah, the captain probably think I got passage legally, he added in his head with a nervous chuckle. Best avoid mentioning that until we are well on our way.

"Wha... Why would I tell you?"

"Well for one, because I'm bored." He answered honestly, a little disappointed (but not entirely surprised) by the lack of trust. "Two; I need something to distract me from my claustrophobia. Three; I was hoping to break this tension between us." At this he motioned towards the gun. He may have been acting calm, but it was just a really good bluff. That thing was making him really uncomfortable.

"And finally; because I'm genuinely curious. Not everyday a kid with a weapon falls out of a vent. If it will help, I can tell you a little about myself fir-" Zeph froze mid-sentence, hearing voices echoing into the room from the open door. "Crap! Hide!" He hissed, momentarily forgetting about the gun and dragging the boy behind the engine and out of sight of the door. He himself then ran over to where he had left Bill's journal on the Coyum and picked it up, making like he had been reading it the entire time.

(( @ActionPony I hate to be a stickler, but there is NO WAY Laiya could have possibly found his stuff. The secret compartments were just that: secret. They weren't included in any design plan, and the only people who knew about them were members of the family... Again, sorry to be nitpicky... I was trying to make sure things wouldn't get too convenient for you guys, but apparently you like that. So from now on, I'm not gonna reveal my plans for the sake of perfectly-timed realizations...))

"Venting system repressurized," said the ominous voice of the AI, and James breathed softly. Hopefuly the stowaway wasn't... you know. Then again, though, if he was, it'd sure as heck be a lot easier to dispose of a body rather than deal with him in person. Suddenly, something slammed into him from behind, and he whirled, only to find Aya, who had fallen back onto her behind.

"You okay?" James asked, offering her a hand up. He didn't apologize. He hadn't done a darn thing. She was the one who had rammed into him, rather hard too. He was too well trained to be knocked over just like that, however, and barely moved when the two came into contact. "You here for the kid, or Zeph?" he asked.

Before he could respond, however, Blink had taken hold of his sleeve and was tugging him down the hallway, away from the engine room. The small alien beast was chirping wildly, and the man almost grinned.

"Hey," he called, turning to Aya, "I think the little guy's got something. I'll check it out. You head to the engine room and see if Zeph's there. Probably is. Shouldn't be that hard to find a kid with huge, green wings, right?" Without another word, the man turned back to Blink, nodding for him to continue forwards.

~~~
"Blink? Secret code words? As if! The last time I tried to teach him that he got bored and fell asleep." said the winged boy, before reaching up and slamming the vent he'd emerged from closed. The other boy narrowed his eyes, still wary.
"You could be lying," he suggested. He would. His brother would. His dad would. He figured he was more like them than he would have liked to believe. It gave him a weird feeling when he thought about it, but tried not to let it show.
"Name's Zephyr," said the seraph, confirming the boy's suspicions as to his identity. "And I'm probably the only other guy here whose been a stowaway and knows how harsh it can be without someone on your side. And seriously, you can put the gun down." The boy didn't put the gun down. Not yet.
"You're a stowaway?" he asked, hearing a small scoff even in his own voice. "I heard the captain talking about you. He knows you're here and he wants you here. You're one of them. You're not a stowaway." Sure, this 'Zephyr' had probably meant in the past, but he could still be lying even then. There really wasn't any way to be sure.
Zephyr began to dig through his bag again, and the boy held his breath. Luckily, it was only a few screws, which the seraph used to re-screw the vent grate back in. Okay, so maybe he was being a little paranoid, but still! After everything he'd been taught, it was better to be paranoid then dead. He didn't move the gun.
"Venting system repressurized." said the voice from above again, and the boy grimaced.
"So as long as you're not taking my advice on hiding, what's your story?" The question stunned him. Zephyr looked at him expectantly, and it took a moment for him to respond.
"Wha... Why would I tell you?" he gasped finally, surprised that this guy would ask such a question so early in their meeting. Usually bad guys gained his trust first (well, tried to). He figured Zeph here would pull out the whole 'Because I'm the One Saving Your Butt' card, but like heck he was going to tell him anything.
((Sorry for the wait, my wi-fi seriously is being a butt =P ))
[i'm sorry. Let's just say Laiya just closed off sections to make the ship harder to navigate, doesn't have the holopad, and she accidentally blocked off the section with his stuff secreted in it.]
Aya took his hand and nodded to show that yes, she was okay, although her butt ached and her pride also ached. This trip was turning out a weirder than she had expected, and that was saying something, given that she knew what she was getting into by going on the Inquisitor. She hoped the whole 'stowaway' matter could be resolved before they reached Evangelion Station, so that they could drop him off and end this business once and for all.
Aya walked into the engine room, and saw Zeph reading Bill's journal about the Coyum with the kind of avid interest that is usually only seen when people wanted to convince whoever might be watching that yes, they were interested in it, no, they hadn't just picked it up the instant before you walked in, and no that isn't porn behind my back, how could you have gotten that idea? She had a pretty good idea that he'd been up to something, and, although she casually greeted Zeph with a:
"Hi. I was wondering where you were. How did you get here?", she also continued her search.
She at first discreetly checked all the more visible hidey-holes around the engine room, and then with enforced casualness walked over to check behind the engine. She immediately saw the boy with the gun and moved quickly. She grabbed his weapon wrist and twisted it, aiming the gun at the wall. This boy was potentially dangerous, and she didn't want to get shot.
She'd learned that the hard way, years ago. Anyone could be dangerous. The most innocent of faces could hide a murderous heart. The kindest words could mask the evilest thoughts. It didn't do to let your guard down. It was always better to play it safe. Taking chances could lead to you being killed, or worse.
"Just like all those other girls..."
She asked the boy, a little harshly if truth be told, "Who are you, and why are you here?"
~
Meanwhile, Laiya was attempting to reach the captain on his communicator while simultaneously contacting Evangelion Station to let them know that the Inquisitor was on its way, and double-checking her route calculations. Of course, that meant that she didn't get too far with any of them, but points for trying. After she'd managed to get the communications with Evangelion Station out of the way, though, things went much faster, especially as she started ignoring the calculations to communicate with the captain.
She started with: "Captain. Captain, do you read me? Over."
She would repeat that until she got a response, or until she gave up, but Laiya was not the kind of person who gave up easily. She was a bit neurotic that way.
James followed the little feathered creature all throughout the ship, slowly becoming more and more impatient the farther they went along. He was starting to believe Blink didn't know what he was doing. Finally, the small alien settled in front of the refrigerator in the kitchen, and James stood in the doorway, a bit tired and all around annoyed.
"You little..." he started to growl, but was cut off by a sharp beeping from his communicator. Still glaring at Blink, the man pulled out the device, betting it was Laiya. Sure enough, he heard her voice crackling through the speaker.
"Captain. Captain, do you read me? Over." she repeated, and James rolled his eyes.
"Yeah. I'm here," he said finally, shooting Blink dirty looks. "What is it? I'm a little..." He paused. "...Busy." That alien was going to get a serious talk later. Maybe not by him, but by that darn owner of his. "Did you find the stowaway?"
~~~

"Oh, no," Zeph shook his head, "I'm not talking about right now. I'm talking about a different ship. I got off of it earlier this morning." The boy had figured as much. Still, like he'd reasoned before, there was no way to tell if this guy was telling the truth or not.

"Well for one, because I'm bored." the seraph shrugged, and the other boy squinted, suppressing a scoff. "Two, I need something to distract me from my claustrophobia." He hadn't expected this guy to give away a fear of his (if he wasn't lying), and was a bit surprised. He tried not to let it show on his face, though. "Three, I was hoping to break this tension between us." At this, Zeph gestured to the gun, and the boy glanced down at it momentarily.

"And finally, because I'm genuinely curious. Not everyday a kid with a weapon falls out of a vent." The boy couldn't help but smile, and a slight chuckle escaped his lips. "If it will help, I can tell you a little about myself fir--" Zeph froze, and so did the boy. Voices were approaching the door. "Crap! Hide!" Zeph hissed, before dragging the stowaway behind the engine, away from the door.

"Hey!" the kid cried, a bit squeakier than he would have liked, but he didn't resist (much; he did manage to yank his arm away stubbornly). Then he grew silent, and watched as Zeph took up a fake action, pretending he was reading a book or something. Good for him. The kid liked to read too. He wondered what it was about, but his thoughts were brought back to reality as the door slid open and the red-haired girl entered.

"Hi. I was wondering where you were. How did you get here?" she asked Zeph, and the boy held his breath. He almost rolled his eyes at her question. 'Same way you did,' he thought, but managed to keep quiet.

Zeph replied with a sarcastic, "I swam." The kid felt himself smirk. It reminded him of something his brother would say.

All of a sudden, the woman appeared in front of him, and he quickly raised his weapon in defense. He was apparently too slow, however, for she snatched his wrist and twisted it, making him yelp in pain. "Who are you, and why are you here?" the woman barked.

He didn't move. He didn't dare. He simply stared her down, a tactic he had so often used against his father, not to mention picked up from. His father had never liked it. Once it happened, he knew he was going to get in big trouble. He mentally shook himself and focused on the girl. Once she seemed indulged in his gaze, he swiftly brought up his leg and kicked her in the stomach. He had no trouble hitting a girl. A little less chivalrous than he liked, but girls could be tough to beat, and just being a girl didn't give her a free pass. He hoped this move would throw her back, giving him enough time to reposition himself and regain authority over the situation.

Alyssa looked over at Yahlie and her eyes widened. If she pressed that button, they'd all die. It would close the security doors first, lock the piloting system, and then the alarms would begin to flare, the bright red lights would accompany the loud shrieking of warning. And then..
BLAMMO! THE END! They'd all die in one gigantic fiery ball of hopeless doom and complete utter destruction. And for nothing, for nothing!

She had to do what she had to. Alyssa got up quickly, leaving her coffee on the mini-table extending from the control center, (where the Holo Board was), and tackled Yahlie. "No. No pressing buttons of any kind like that.", Ally would say, her face extremely close to the alien's. If she had to, she would beat that information into Yahlie's head.

If anything, Alyssa didn't want to die before at least visiting one planet, and especially she didn't want to die in such a stupid way.

Aya stumbled back, and hit her head on a part of the engine. She fell to the ground and curled into the fetal position, holding her head with one hand. With the other, she pressed the 'panic' button on her communicator. The (unsettlingly calm) voice of the A.I. announced throughout the ship:

"A crewmember is in distress in the engine room. A crewmember is in distress in the engine room. A crewmember is in distress in the engine room."

The A.I. would continue to repeat that until the distress was disabled, which Aya was in no shape to do. Her head was pounding and her stomach was rolling. She was barely conscious, and barely holding on to her last meal.

~

Laiya had just told the captain: "No, I'm on the bridge. I was calling to see if you had." when the voice of the A.I. floated through the ship:

"A crewmember is in distress in the engine room. A crewmember is in distress in the engine room. A crewmember is in distress in the engine room."

The A.I. continued to repeat that ominous message in an unsettlingly flat tone. Laiya told the captain:

"That was probably the stowaway. I just need to fix a few things and then I'll be there. Who do you think the crewmember is?"

Laiya cut off communication and then did a few things she wanted to do. First, she primed a distress signal. One short code, and the Inquisitor would be telling everyone in the system that it was hijacked. The Inquisitor's mission was an important one. It wouldn't take long before the burly men with the mirrored sunglasses and the big guns showed up to put the hijacker (please note- she doesn't know what he's there for- she's just jumping to conclusions) in custody, and even if they didn't board the ship they'd be waiting at every spaceport. If the hijacker landed anywhere there was significant human presence, he would be caught. Next, she asked Alyssa:

"Can you imput and finalize our route at short notice? We have a hijacker and I think it would be a good idea to be able to deny him port. I'm going to go check the engine room."

Laiya grabbed one of the emergency TASER guns from where it had been stashed under her chair. The guns had been put there in case something came up that would require force (on an exploration vessel you need to be prepared for everything). They delivered an electric shock that went from 'mild zap' through 'stun' to 'death by electrocution'. She set it somewhere between 'mild zap' and 'stun'- enough to temporarily drop the hijacker, but not enough to really incapacitate him.

Thus equipped, Laiya headed off to the engine room. She was going to help bring that hijacker down.

Of course, she was a horrible shot, but she wouldn't let that stop her.
[Warning: This is told through the perspective of Laiya, who isn't thinking too clearly at the moment, and overreacting to everything. Take her opinions with a grain of salt. For example, Laiya really knows nothing about the stowaway (I can never remember his name), and is just jumping to conclusions.]

Laiya was in a rather frazzled state of mind. That hijacker was getting on her nerves, and she couldn't concentrate on anything else than (as she imagined) that shadowed, mocking form lurking at the edge of her imagination. He was taunting her, she knew it. He'd take over the Inquisitor, and she'd lose the chance to be on its historic mission. It would all go wrong.

Indeed, she was so distracted, that she ran headfirst into one of the barriers that she herself had erected. She rubbed her aching nose and slid down to the floor. She needed to calm down. To think. Breathe deeply, that's what the therapist said, right? The therapist had been right before. The breathing calmed her down. It collected her thoughts, stopped them from flying off everywhere. Stopped the latest issue from grating on her mind like a wire.

Breathe. It isn't working. Everything is falling down around her. The hijacker has hurt a crewmember. The Inquisitor will be lost. She's losing her mind. Her nose is hurting. She needed a quieter environment. Her room-yes, she'd go to her room. A good solid silent time would help her out a lot. She'd leave her communicator outside the door. Someone else could answer the distress signal.

Laiya was a horrible shot anyways.

She shakily went off in another direction, over to her quarters (or at least, she hoped they were hers). She left her communicator outside the door, and she lay down on the bed, breathing deeply and trying to order her mind. Lying down as she was, she grew tired. She closed the door and turned off the alarm in that room. She lay down once again, and soon, she was blissfully asleep.

The red-haired girl fell backwards, and slammed her head on a part of the engine, sending her sprawling to the ground, before curling up into a ball. Oops. He hadn't meant for that to happen. He started to crawl towards her, and muttered a quick, quiet, "Sorry." Suddenly, the ever-present voice of the AI emerged from the overhead speakers, startling the boy.

"A crewmember is in distress in the engine room. A crewmember is in distress in the engine room. A crewmember is in distress in the engine room." the voice repeated, and the boy almost felt his heart stop. Now everyone would be heading to the engine room. He needed to move. He scrambled to his feet, desperately hoping Zeph wouldn't say anything. He also hoped he could get away and get back to his stash before anyone came to the engine room.

The boy rubbed his wrist irritably, before giving the seraph a look. He didn't dare speak, nor did he know what he would have said, anyway. He just stared for a moment, hoping Zeph was distracted and he could get out of there.

~~~
"No, I'm on the bridge. I was calling to see if you had." Laiya crackled through the communicator, and James huffed quietly to himself, shooting a death glare at Blink.
"No, not yet. Zeph's little pet just led me on a wild goose chase." Why the alien had done that was beyond him. "Where's Rassa? Maybe send him to the engine room to get Zeph. I haven't heard back from Aya. I just sent her there not too long ago."
"A crewmember is in distress in the engine room. A crewmember is in distress in the engine room. A crewmember is in distress in the engine room." came the sudden, reoccurring voice of the AI. It continued to repeat the message, and it didn't take a genius to figure out what was going on. Then again, maybe it did; Laiya immediately responded.
"That was probably the stowaway," she said, and James supressed an agitated, 'No kidding!' "I just need to fix a few things and then I'll be there. Who do you think the crewmember is?"
"Yeah, get down there, and maybe bring Rassa with you. Chances are we may need some brute strength." He wondered if the Coyum would take offense to that, and he swallowed. "As for the crewmember," he continued, "it could be either Zeph or Aya. The stowaway's probably there, so I'm going to see if I can head him off."
The man deactivated his communicator, then turned and faced Blink. "You're gonna get it, you little..." The sentence remained unfinished. He still didn't understand why the alien had led him on this goose chase. Unless... oh no. "Zeph's gone rogue...?" the captain said aloud, to no one in particular. Only one way to find out. He pulled out his communicator again.
"Zeph. Zeph, where are you? What's going on?" He slapped himself mentally, placing a hand on his forehead as he rushed from the kitchen back towards the engine room. "Do you have the stowaway?" He tried not to sound panicked, but darn, was it hard. He tried not to ask too many questions, either, to sound almost casual.
"Hi. I was wondering where you were. How did you get here?"
Zeph glaced up and raised an eyebrow at her. "I swam." He answered sarcastically. Come on, how was he supposed to answer that question?
From the lack of any farther attempt to communicate, Zeph could tell the red haired girl (it was Aya, if he remembered correctly) wasn't here for him. Please don't look behind the engine, he prayed. Of course, that was the very next thing she did.
The next several seconds were a blur as the next thing Zeph knew, Aya was on the ground and there was an alarm blaring across the entire ship. "Hey! Are you alright?" Zeph asked rushing over to the girl's side. To add to the chaos, his communicator began bleeping at him.
"Zeph. Zeph, where are you? What's going on? Do you have the stowaway?" He heard the captain's voice coming from the device when he had finally found which pocket it was in. "Well I had him until Aya decided to barge in and get physical with him! She got injured in the struggle. I don't know how bad it is." Noticing the kid watching him, Zeph added, "The kid managed to get away." And motioned for him to leave.
"Now, Captain. Have you seen Blink any- POP- Aaaah! ... Never mind I found him."
"Hey! Are you alright?" Zeph cried, rushing to Aya's side quickly. At the same moment, something in his pocket began to bleep, and the kid instinctively thought it was a bomb, or a tracking device. It was neither, however. The winged boy pulled out a different device out, and from it came the crackling voice of the 'captain'. The boy refused to acknowledge the man as such.
"Zeph. Zeph, where are you? What's going on? Do you have the stowaway?" said the voice, and the boy froze. There was no way he was going to get out of this now. He stared at Zeph, unable to move. He couldn't, no matter how hard he tried. His eyes were locked into the other boy's, anxiously waiting for his response.
"Well," Zeph began, "I had him until Aya decided to barge in and get physical with him! She got injured in the struggle. I don't know how bad it is." The boy didn't dare to breathe. He glanced at the red-haired girl, apparently named Aya. He hadn't meant to hurt her too bad, maybe wind her at the most. He felt really bad, and figured he would have to apologize to her later sometime. If he ever got the chance.
"The kid managed to get away." The boy's eyes widened, and he gave Zeph a half-confused, half-grateful look. The seraph motioned for him to leave, and suddenly, his legs were working again. He snatched his gun off the floor and dashed towards the engine room door, before looking back at Zeph, mouthing a quick, 'Thank you.' He wasn't sure if Zeph would rat him out once he left or not, but either way, this guy wouldn't know where he was going anyway. It was a secret.
"Now, Captain. Have you seen Blink any--" Pop! The little feathered alien suddenly materialized into the room. "Aaaah!" Zeph screamed. "...Nevermind; I found him..." The boy smirked to himself before dashing away down the hallway.
~~~

"Well I had him until Aya decided to barge in and get physical with him! She got injured in the struggle. I don't know how bad it is." James silently cursed to himself. Of course, the over-exuberant cook had to get in and get hurt. He was about to ask, but Zeph managed to answer his unspoken question regardless. "The kid managed to get away." As if things couldn't get worse.

James sighed, very annoyed, "Where's Laiya and Rassa? I sent them down there after the alarm went off. Did you see which way the kid went? I'll try to head him off." The captain's mind was so full of... stuff, he almost forgot he was suspicious of Zeph's behavior, and didn't bother to think about whether the seraph would lie or not.

"Now, Captain. Have you seen Blink any-" Zeph started to say, when suddenly, pop! "Aaaah! ... Never mind; I found him." James glared just at the mention of the alien's name, and his accusations came back to him.

"Yeah, that little creature of yours just led me on a wild goose chase throughout the ship and ended up at the kitchen. Any idea what that's about? Maybe keep your little pet under control from now on. This is important." And the man switched off the communicator before dashing down the hallway.

"No, I'm on the bridge. I was calling to see if you had." Laiya crackled through the communicator, and James huffed quietly to himself, shooting a death glare at Blink.

"No, not yet. Zeph's little pet just led me on a wild goose chase." Why the alien had done that was beyond him. "Where's Rassa? Maybe send him to the engine room to get Zeph. I haven't heard back from Aya. I just sent her there not too long ago."

"A crewmember is in distress in the engine room. A crewmember is in distress in the engine room. A crewmember is in distress in the engine room." came the sudden, reoccurring voice of the AI. It continued to repeat the message, and it didn't take a genius to figure out what was going on. Then again, maybe it did; Laiya immediately responded.

"That was probably the stowaway," she said, and James supressed an agitated, 'No kidding!' "I just need to fix a few things and then I'll be there. Who do you think the crewmember is?"

"Yeah, get down there, and maybe bring Rassa with you. Chances are we may need some brute strength." He wondered if the Coyum would take offense to that, and he swallowed. "As for the crewmember," he continued, "it could be either Zeph or Aya. The stowaway's probably there, so I'm going to see if I can head him off."

The man deactivated his communicator, then turned and faced Blink. "You're gonna get it, you little..." The sentence remained unfinished. He still didn't understand why the alien had led him on this goose chase. Unless... oh no. "Zeph's gone rogue...?" the captain said aloud, to no one in particular. Only one way to find out. He pulled out his communicator again.

"Zeph. Zeph, where are you? What's going on?" He slapped himself mentally, placing a hand on his forehead as he rushed from the kitchen back towards the engine room. "Do you have the stowaway?" He tried not to sound panicked, but darn, was it hard. He tried not to ask too many questions, either, to sound almost casual.
"Hi. I was wondering where you were. How did you get here?"
Zeph glaced up and raised an eyebrow at her. "I swam." He answered sarcastically. Come on, how was he supposed to answer that question?

From the lack of any farther attempt to communicate, Zeph could tell the red haired girl (it was Aya, if he remembered correctly) wasn't here for him. Please don't look behind the engine, he prayed. Of course, that was the very next thing she did.

The next several seconds were a blur as the next thing Zeph knew, Aya was on the ground and there was an alarm blaring across the entire ship. "Hey! Are you alright?" Zeph asked rushing over to the girl's side. To add to the chaos, his communicator began bleeping at him.

"Zeph. Zeph, where are you? What's going on? Do you have the stowaway?" He heard the captain's voice coming from the device when he had finally found which pocket it was in. "Well I had him until Aya decided to barge in and get physical with him! She got injured in the struggle. I don't know how bad it is." Noticing the kid watching him, Zeph added, "The kid managed to get away." And motioned for him to leave.

"Now, Captain. Have you seen Blink any- POP- Aaaah! ... Never mind I found him."
Unfortunately for him, Aya wasn't listening. It's kinda hard to, when your ears are ringing like hers were, especially when you were just kicked in the stomach and are not in any mood to listen to any opinions from the person who just kicked you in the stomach. She managed to catch onto the conversation between Zeph and the captain, and managed to choke out a few words: "You didn't have him... You didn't try. He was there the whole time. You were deliberately ignoring him. You were helping him. How could you?"

Aya was feeling particularly uncharitable, as she had just gotten kicked in the stomach by this boy, and now it appeared that Zeph had helped him out.

She saw the boy run, and she felt a sinking feeling of hopelessness. She'd failed. She'd had the perfect opportunity, and she blew it. Now who knew what the boy would get up to. She began to quietly sob.

[Please note, Laiya isn't quite in contact with reality at this moment. She's not the most reliable of narrators.]

Meanwhile, Laiya was about three steps away from a mental breakdown. And I'm not talking about a mild-freak-out-she'll-be-okay-tommorrow mental breakdown. I'm talking about a no-holds-barred, you-need-pharmalogical-help-and-perhaps-a-straightjacket full-on meltdown.

She had thought the sleep would help, but it didn't. She had had bad dreams. He was taunting her. That imp, in the shadows, with the malicious laugh. He'd stolen the floor away from under her, and she'd fell. Fell into the cold void of space, as she froze and suffocated, thrashing helplessly. She could do nothing. He was shadow, and she couldn't touch him. She reached desperately for him, to take him out, to stop it. She missed. Always she missed. Her wild swings passed right through him, and he laughed. She cried, and he laughed.

Stop him. She needed to stop him. Otherwise, it would all be gone. Her dream journey. She'd longed for it, planned for it. Hoped for it. It was gone now. Gone, like the floor. Gone, like the air. Gone, like the warmth. Gone, gone, gone. She began crying, but she mustn't cry. She dried her tears, took her gun and communicator, and focused on her task.

Well, as much as she could focus in her current mental state. After running into her own barriers three times, she decided that it was time to lower them. She made her way to the bridge, running into her own barriers some more. After the second such incident, she thought she heard a snicker. She whipped around, but saw nothing. And then the voice came, from the shadows behind her.

"Ha ha! You've lost! You know you've lost! You've lost everything!"

Laiya yelled at the voice: "I'm not lost! Not lost! I can do this! I can! You're wrong!"

But that was a lie. She knew it was a lie. All lies. Everything was a lie. The ship was a lie.

She stumbled on towards the bridge. Once there, she presented a sorry and somewhat disturbing sight, her hair and clothes messed up from sleep, and a wild and desperate look in her eyes. She nearly ran to her computer, and she raised the barriers and repressurized the sectors they had been sealing. She then tried to calm down and focus her mind, doing the exercises the therapist had taught her. It only worked somewhat.

That voice still giggled in the shadows, the floor still buckled and gave way. The air retreated, and cold came in its place. It all kept on. Aya gasped for breath when the air failed her, she shivered when the cold got to her. She clung to her station like her life depended on it, and she cried for the voice to just stop.

This would confuse the others there, as the ventilation system was working fine, the heaters were on and in perfect condition, the floor was steady, and no one was laughing from the shadows. But still Laiya choked, shivered, and fell.

[Wow... this girl needs help.]

Of course Yahlie knew she wasn't supposed to touch the button. Naaaaw, she just wanted to look at it... And maybe there was nothing wrong with lifting the glass lid... And maaaybe it wouldn't hurt to put her finger on the button...

Fortunately, That trip down the slippery slope when Alyssa tackled Yahlie, Knocking her to the ground. Alyssa got right up close to the surprised Yahlies face, nose to nose, and said said, "No. No pressing buttons of any kind like that."

Yahlie lay pinned with her ears flat and tail tucked. "Yahlie no push button." she said defensively, avoiding eye contact like she knew she had been a bad girl.

(Rassas part is coming)

Rassa, who had been watching that brife fiasco, sighed, rolled his eyes went back to his game. He was SO far past caring.

Then he overheard the conversation going on next to him between Laiay land her talking-stone.

"Captain. Captain, do you read me? Over."

"Yeah. I'm here."
That sounded like the captain "What is it? I'm a little... Busy. Did you find the stowaway?"

"No, not yet. Zeph's little pet just led me on a wild goose chase. Where's Rassa? Maybe send him to the engine room to get Zeph." Rassas ears perked up at that. "I haven't heard back from Aya. I just sent her there not too long ago."

Suddenly a loud voice rang throughout the ship, causing Rassa to jump. "A crewmember is in distress in the engine room. A crewmember is in distress in the engine room. A crewmember is in distress in the engine room."

Sounded like Rassa had something interesting to do. Cool.

Laiya did a few thing on her com-pew-ter, said something unintelligible to teammate, grabbed a taser (he learned the hard away what those things do) and with that Rassa followed her to the engine room.

...

A little while later, Rassa was standing in the door of Laiyas room looking confused. THIS was the engine room?? Why The heck was she sleeping??

Suddenly the woman set up in her bed, her hair all messed up, with a crazed look in her eyes. She got up grab her weapon and her talking stone and plan out the door back down the hall. Rassa followed her.

...all the way back to the bridge. SO confused.

[A little nitpicking- Laiya's look is more desperate. And it's now definite- Rassa knows nothing about human social cues. She's acting in an extremely disturbing manner by this point, or at least it would be disturbing to a human. She's talking to nothing, reacting to things that aren't there, and generally acting freaky. The poor girl is extremely desperate by this point. She's terrified that the Inquisitor is going to be hijacked and it won't get to go on its journey of exploration, which she's hoped for for a long time.]

Before Zeph could answer her, Aya struggled to her feet. The tears still glistened in her eyes, no matter how much she tried to hold them back. She staggered to the door and told Zeph:

"No... p-point staying... here now. Get... to bridge with me. Y-you answer questions... on the way there."

Yes, Zeph had a lot of things to answer for. She still felt betrayed by him, and she wanted to know why. But she was in no condition to do anything, so she had to settle for answers, instead of the beating that her first instincts had suggested (stomach and head injuries sure make you cranky).

"R-right." Despite her being hurt, Zeph could almost feel the hostility coming off of Aya. He was going to have choose his words carefully...

"Ms. Beaulieu? That was the last crate."

The buxom doctor looked up from the holo-pad she was holding and found one of the dock workers standing in front of her, wiping his brow. "Was it the sanitation chamber?" She asked.

"That's what the label said."

"Excellent! Everything is here." Annabelle checked it off the list and handed the pad to the Omnitrii representative next to her, who took it and walked off. Two more dock workers approached her.

"Excuse me, kid, but where is the ship that we are supposed to load these on to?" The first one asked. Anna gave him a glare, but it was gone almost as soon as it had arrived. She did not appreciate being treated like a kid, however she rarely stayed angry for long.

"That's 'Doctor', James. Not 'kid', 'Doctor'. And as for your question-" She pulled out her own holotab and turned it on. "The email that I got says that the Inquisitor left not too long ago, so it could be here at any moment or we may be waiting a while."

The second worker raised an eyebrow. "And what are we supposed to do until then?"

The sixteen year old grinned at him and reached into her lab coat pocket. "Oh, I don't know. You could always play some poker with me." She answered, pulling out a pack of playing cards. "Consider it a paid break."

[Just so as you know, Inquisitor may be a little delayed. I'm not sure what standard procedure is when the ship has been compromised.]

"You... were... in that room. You... could easily... have found him. Why... didn't... you... report him?"

That was the big, driving question. Had Zeph at least called for help, the Captain at least would have been with her, and perhaps Rassa and Laiya (although Laiya had been acting strangely, so Aya wasn't sure she wanted the help). The situation would have been very different. But he didn't, and now Aya had a pounding headache and the stowaway was gone to who-knows-where to do who-knows-what. She had several ideas about what he was going to do, but it was hard to think rationally when your head hurt. The more she thought about it, though, the more she felt that he didn't mean any harm. He had a weapon, but he was up against a whole crew with their own guns (the ship had a supply in case of emergencies). Also, one of the crewmembers was Rassa, a big, hulking wolf-man (although the stowaway might not have known that). Several crewmembers were trained in combat, and there's no way one kid could take them all out on his own. The martial arts movies lied to people- numbers really did matter.

The only ways he could probably overcome the crew that she could think of then was to hack the system, and either trap the crew in the closed-off sections, depressurize them, and wait for the crew to suffocate (in which case, that sick bastard deserved to die), or take out the power system, which was, if Aya remembered her lessons on spacecraft right, was such a monumentally stupid idea that she discounted it. After all, if he took out the power, he took out the carbon dioxide filter/recyclers. He'd suffocate everyone! If the suppliers were as paranoid as Aya thought they were (and in this type of trade, paranoia was a good trait) the crew had breath masks and emergency air supplies. But the boy wouldn't have one, and, if he did, he would still be up against the crew of the Inquisitor, only now they'd be desperate to stop him before the air ran out for them all. And that wasn't even the only way that turning the power off would kill the ship. Spaceships depended on their energy, so far away from any ecosystem that could support human life.

And then, if Aya was correct about the amount of paranoia that had gone into the ship (probably quite a lot by ordinary standards, which meant somewhat average for space standards), there would be a battery-powered distress signal programmed to activate the instant all power was shut off, because that could only mean the spaceship was in deep, deep yogurt.

Zephyr raised an eyebrow at Aya. "Oh sure!" He said sarcasticly, "An armed kid drops down from the ceiling in front of me. Huh? Better call the captain while he's got a gun pointed at my head!" He was pretty sure he had made his point. "Why didn't you treat this as a hostage situation the moment you noticed something was off? And for the record, I was the only reason he hadn't left the room. Guess who ruined that?"

Maybe Aya's head wound was scrambling her logic, but something didn't make sense. This situation was much too complicated for her. If Aya had gotten three wishes right then and there, the first wish would be to get their unwanted hitchhiker out of there (phrased far more specifically, in case the wish went with the literal interpretation). All she'd wanted was to go see the universe. Why, oh why, did she have to deal with stowaways?

Well... at least, Moraya Frost hadn't shown up, so they had her rations to spare.

Wait, what was she thinking? It was like she was already considering the kid part of the crew. And given what he'd done so far, he really shouldn't have her confidence.

Alyssa got off of Yahlie and smiled, getting back unto her chair. She grabbed her capuccino and took a seat in her chair, beginning to spin in it. She didn't know what the others were doing, but she was having a blast. Spinning brought memories, ones of when she was little and spun in her father's chair, but it also brought dizziness, which didn't bother Alyssa.

However, the more she spun, the more her stomach churned. Alyssa halted the spinning with her right foot, the sock bringing a stop to all of the kinetic energy. (Yes, she's wearing a sock, Alyssa was too lazy to put on shoes, and it's a habit). She then stretched as the dizziness wore off.

"Hey Yahlie, do you want some coffee? It's sweet, I promise.", she said to the alien. She had a lot, so at least the crew didn't have to see her when the coffee was running low, she was a perfect example of Satan.

Rule 1. of bringing Alyssa somewhere, don't run out of coffee.

James rushed down the hallway, headed for the engine room. If Zeph had anything to do with this... He nearly rammed into them on his way there, and it seemed they were headed for the bridge. The captain's yes flicked from the boy to the girl, then back to the boy. It was obvious to anyone something had happened, and the stowaway was nowhere in sight.

"What happened?" the man barked, hurrying over to Aya's side and staring Zeph in the eye. "Where's the guy? Which way did he head? I wish we had our medic..." This last part he muttered quietly to himself under his breath; of course they had to pick her up later than the rest. Now Aya was probably suffering internal bleeding in her brain or some crap. Well, okay, maybe that was an overstatement, but he was no doctor; he just knew that was something seriously bad.

"Zeph, what happened to Aya?" James asked again, trying to relax a little bit. They'd bring the cook to the med bay (if she was in a healthy enough condition to move; he still didn't know her condition to begin with), then stock her up with a bunch of painkillers or something. He'd have to ask around for advice.

[Zeph and Aya are heading to the bridge, if slowly. Aya can stand with help, and is currently asking Zeph hard questions. Yes, Laiya blocked the stuff off to begin with, but now, with her mental state as it is, she keeps running into her own barriers, so she lifted them all.]
