With many of the students arriving either earlier that day or the previous night, the school was already bustling with activity. But as each of the students would notice, there was a note placed on their dorm's nightstands, in official school lettering;

Welcome, students, to Tempest Academy.

I am Richard C. Hawke, your headmaster. Take today to explore the campus and meet some of the other students- classes will start tomorrow at 8 a.m., sharp.

But don't think you have today off.

Later today, you will each receive personalized challenges- do try to complete them as quickly as possible. Consider it an aptitude test. These will determine your starting class rankings.

Best of luck, and I do hope you enjoy your time at our esteemed academy.

Richard C. Hawke, Headmaster of Tempest Academy

Leo walks into the school trying to avoid getting attention since his father is all over the newspaper from the battle of New York. Getting inside his dorm he places his stuff down and reads the note. He decides to get everything organized into their places. After that he wonders the halls.

Amy was one of the very few (potentially the only) students who had permission to stay in campus accomodation during the summer. This wasn't normal by any means, but she had no family to speak of and as far as the care system was concerned she was The Tempest Academy's problem now, so an exception had been made for her. She had the same room as other years, on the third floor near a fire escape, making it excellent for sneaking out of at night. She'd spent a few weeks of the summer abroad in Wales, spending some of her saved up allowance on tickets and hostel accomodation and had arrived back a few weeks ago, raring to start the new school year. Amy couldn't help but smirk at the sight of the neatly typed note on the bed stand, she didn't need to read it to know what it said. She knew there would be an aptitude test of sorts, tailored to her skillset, just just didn't know what it would be, the tests varied from one year to another and try as you might, one couldn't exactly study for them.

For that reason she had a bow and quiver concealed in her backpack. She pulled on her fingerless leather gloves and checked her nails (the only form of beautification she ever did to herself was paint them black) before heading out, locking the door behind her. As the weather was nice she decided to go for a bit of a stroll, maybe there'd be a football match she could join in for a bit or something.

There was a steady creak, and then a wheezing squeak as the prison transport pulled up in front of the school. Tyern's lawyer had argued against this transport, calling it cruel and unnecessary. The judge had disagreed. He was deemed a danger to the public, and had to be treated as such. The judge had even had the nerve to say that he had gotten lucky the Academy had been willing to take in someone like him. Tyern didn't feel lucky. Lucky didn't feel like the power dampener bolted around his neck. Lucky wasn't having his hands and feet kept mostly immobilized by the chains cuffed around his wrists and ankles. The guards around him didn't help either. He could practically feel their anxiety as they kept shooting him glances. It's funny they're so nervous, as so far, he's been a model prisoner. Tyern breathed out a sigh. Today, he was going to get his freedom. Whatever freedom could be offered at this Academy. There's grumbling and plenty of nervous glances as the guards unlock the shackles from the bench he's seated upon. Tyern is led out of the transport, and up the steps in front of the main entrance. It's quiet, only the clank of chains and the shuffle of footsteps breaking the silence. It is only inside the main doors that his chains are removed, and the power dampener is unlocked and pulled from around his neck.

After much growling and paper shuffling, Tyern was released into the school. Following the directions of the very stern seeming secretary to the Headmaster, Tyern made his way to his assigned dorm. Seeing his name on a letter, Tyern picked it up and opened it. Reading quickly, Tyern tossed the note to the side.
"So they are giving me free reign. At least that's better than prison, though the idea of being tested seems like fun," Tyern muttered to himself. "Still, better than being stuck in a windowless block all day." Tyern stretched, letting his muscles stiff from a cramped ride loosen, before rubbing his wrists where the manacles had chafed. The restraints had been too tight, and had bitten into the skin of his wrists and ankles. Tyern would definitely remember that. For now, however, he would look for something to eat. Nobody lets you snack in prison, after all.

Yue woke up to the sound of people entering the school, wiping his eyes he looked at dorm nightstand and saw the letter. He had heard something place it last night, but after seeing they left after placing the letter, instantly fell back asleep. After skim reading, he summed it up to be the basic introduction to the school, lesson times, what today will be and then some introduction test, seems like it was personalised. It sounded interesting, but all the same he hoped it wasn't public, the last thing he needed was to be seen actually being active on the first day. He got out of bed and looked around the room he would be staying in during his time here, he had come the night before just to escape the clan that bit faster and so he didn't have to wake up early and it seemed like there were a few other who had already come in as well or were there before he even arrived.

After getting dressed and finally committing to going outside for the day, he proceeded towards the entrance of the school to see what types of people were flooding in or if there was any form of navigation he could follow to find an interesting place. He had already decided todays mission was to scout the students, this school seemed to be committed to taking in weirdos with abilities and giving them a education in that set skillset, so surely everyone else must be abnormal right? As he walked out towards the front gate, he was thinking that maybe they will be more normal then he thought, he looked up to see a prison bus drive away, he just stared at it as it drove down the road before seeing its obvious passenger getting escorted to the stairs. Letting out a defeated sigh, Yue moved on towards the gate keeping an eye out for food stalls, maps and other students, as he slightly whispered under his breath. "From one crazy place to another..."

Lilith walked slowly to the entrance of the school, as her nervous emotions caused a group of butterflies to flutter around her. She tried not to draw any attention from the crowd of students in the lobby: even though there might have been some heads turning her way, she wanted to at least drop off her things before mingling with her classmates. Still, she hoped that everyone would not have scattered by the time she carried her bags to the dorm.

She arrived in her dorm, and immediately noticed the letter from the headmaster. Some students might have groaned at the mention of the aptitude test, but Lilith was excited. A chance to learn about her powers, from someone that would actually be able to help other than just telling her not to use them? Lilith had wished for that all her life. Surely her powers could protect people, make the world better for everyone, it was time to start using them!

Just after this thought, there was a flash of light, and when it cleared, her bag laid open and empty on the ground. She opened up one of the drawers on her dresser, and found out that she'd magically unpacked and sorted all of her belongings. Well, actually, they weren't really sorted. In the drawer in front of her was a bottle of hair conditioner on top of a handful of skirts, under which were a couple of notebooks all next to a pair of sandals. So her powers weren't perfect yet. That was fine. That was why she was here. Brightened by the thought of her powers, she decided to save sorting for later and headed to the lobby.

The crowd of students was still there, which Lilith was relieved by, but she was still a little anxious. Even if she did definitely want to become a hero, she didn't know the first thing about being one, so she was afraid of looking foolish. Ideally, she'd find one or two students that she could get to know for now, without attracting too much attention. Unfortunately, she was pretty good at attracting attention to herself, so she stayed at the edge of the crowd and looked for people in a similar position as herself.

"From one crazy place to another..." said one boy not too far from her. This guy looked promising. Lilith gave a friendly wave and walked over to him.

"Hi, I'm Lilith. Are you new here?" she asked. That felt kind of awkward, but it still seemed nice to ask. "Actually, wait, is everyone new here?"

Leo wander ed back towards the entrance and back outside. With a sigh he flopped down on the grass. He pulls out his phone and checks social media which is still news from the battle of New York. "Why dad?"

Amy's wandering ended up taking her to the front of the building where the rest of the students were arriving. So far she hadn't seen any of her (small group of) close friends from previous years, but that didn't worry her, there was plenty of leniency with arrival times at the Academy, so chances were they just hadn't arrived yet. So she took the opportunity to see the new students. For her it was pretty easy to tell the new students from the old ones, most of the old ones she knew, even if it was just in passing (she had a good memory for faces). The new students usually fell into one of three camps- 1) overwhelmed and shocked at everything on offer, 2) walking in like they old the place and were completely competent in their abilities or 3) like they were questioning their life choices and wanted to be anywhere else that wasn't Tempest. Amy had been in the first camp when she arrived, she knew she had skills, but didn't consider them big league enough to warrant a place at the academy. She'd spent the first two(ish) months convinced she'd be told to leave because they'd made a mistake and didn't want her. But she was over that now. Mostly.

The sight of a prison transport in the drive didn't really phase her, but it did pique her interest as she looked around for anybody who could potentially have been the prisoner, but saw nobody. Her attention was then caught by the conversation beginning between two of the new students, one male, one female. She probably shouldn't have been eavesdropping, but this was a school that catered to people with superpowers damn it. Normal rules didn't always apply here. So she answered the question, even though it hadn't been aimed at her. "It's a mix of old and new new students actually. There's not really a set age or date for graduating from here, nor for getting offered a place, so age can be deceptive. It all depends on your particular skill set and/or powers, and how much work needs to be done to make you flourish. That's the good thing about this place, they really do cater for a person's specifics." Her Welsh accent was prominent as she spoke. A sight pause which was followed by an easy grin, then she added "I'm Amy, by the way, and if that rambling explanation didn't already give it away before, I'm not at all new here, this is my third year."

After finishing his little remark, Yue looked up only to notice someone waving at him. He gave a small look around just to make sure, but no one else seemed to be the person she was looking at. Then she proceeded to walk up to him and introduce herself. All the while, Yue couldn't exactly put his finger on it, but something was off with this girl, he felt way too at ease with her despite not knowing her at all, realising he had to actually respond to her instead of daze off, he bit his lip slightly and finally responded "Hey, I am Yue. Sorry I was in my own world." Then almost like clockwork another person came answering a question that had apparently been asked that he probably missed while caught up in his head. But in almost seconds what started as an answer became an advertisement for the school. Pretty much instantly he thought to himself 'Oh no... Lets hope she gives us pamphlets or whatever and then moves on, between lack of interest and the still mostly unknown girl next to me, this situation is already considered dangerous'.

But thinking about the situation some more, he did still need to find out more about the students and the two he is currently speaking to, while unknown, weren't going to give more information on themselves without him actually staying and probably asking. Looking towards the newcomer he started the mission 'Information Gathering'! "Third year? So does that mean you don't have to do this test, or is it given every year. Its just it says personalised, so I assumed there was going to be set tests for different skills instead of a different test for every student. But if I am being honest, I am mostly guessing. I got here last night and was going to look around for some sort of map."

Taking a casual stroll through the park on route to the academy London would once more regard the various letters she had received. Sure school was necessary and a whole site better than the constant cramming her brother had been subjected to with all those expectations, but still she was exactly looking forward to book cramming, ettiquete or whatever else the school had in mind.

Dressed in a puffy large coat it would appear the girl had been used to far warmer climates but in either case she looked her new home over now finally upon the steps of the academy, the classes were tomorrow but they did say something about challenges? well that was later so time to focus on enjoying the now.

This other new boy, Yue, looked a little nervous as well, so that made Lilith feel a little better. "That's okay," she responded to him. "I'm kind of in a whole new world, to be honest. I hope they don't kick me out after the first test."

Just as their conversation was starting, another girl walked in, who introduced herself as Amy. She looked barely older than the two of them, but she introduced herself as a third-year, and it seemed like she knew the place better than anyone else. Lilith listened to this girl talking to Yue about the test, and her eyes widened. "When do the tests start?" she asked, alternating her gaze between Yue and Amy. "Or, wait, are we already supposed to know about them?"

Leo walks back into the school passing by the group of students. Keeping his head down he arrives back at his dorm room. He decides to take a nap.

Amy nodded at his questions, the guy had clearly been lost in his own thoughts and slightly startled at the sound of her speaking. It was hardly surprising he'd get caught up in his own head, given where he was it was pretty damn easy for one to get lost in their own thoughts. "Yup I'm a third year" she repeated. "And yes, I've still got to do the test every year. Probably intended as a way of allowing us to move up the ranks, but it really just makes me a paranoid that I've forgotten how to do my thing over the holidays." She gave a self depreciating shrug, before continuing. "But it varies from year to year and usually person to person too, at least that's what it's been like for me. Then again I don't think anybody else here the other years has had the same mix as me. As for a map? There's a plan of the whole facility in the main lobby, including all the floors and grounds. My advice would be to take a photo of it, makes life a helluva lot easier."

Then the other girl spoke up, looking wide eyed at what she was getting herself into. There was something about her that didn't quite feel right, but Amy couldn't put her finger on what exactly it was. The school catered for all types, Amy would know, she herself was half alien. "Ah well that's the great mystery of it" she sighed "they always give you notice for the start of year tests. They just don't tell you when it is or what it'll be, which are arguably the more important parts. I guess they want to either catch you off guard, or maybe they get a kick watching us all squirm waiting for it to happen Who knows?" She shrugged, then gestured at her backpack. "Either way, I've come prepared."

A young woman entered the academy grounds through the gate with a bright smile on her face. The girl had long, brunette hair, a young face, and youthful, sapphire eyes. She was wearing a jean jacket with a blue sweatshirt and gray skinny jeans, along with a white backpack slung over her right shoulder. Her body was extremely lean, to the point of looking and being fragile. However, she had that genuine bright smile on her face the entire time. As she stepped onto the academy grounds, she happily looked around the campus, her bright smile filling with glee.

The girl giggled happily and adjusted her bag a bit as she tracked onwards, looking at the variety of people around her.

Lilith saw Amy gesture toward her backpack. Prepared? She had to come prepared? That was news to her. She opened her mouth slightly and almost asked what "prepared" meant, but decided not to before she could get any words out. She didn't want to look that clueless. Besides, maybe it was only the returning students that needed to bring something in advance. And if she really needed something for her test, she could always try to conjure it.

"I'm... I'm prepared!" she said over a nervous chortle. A handful of vibrant yellow butterflies started flying away from around her. "Well, prepared as I can be." She looked over at Yue, wondering how he was taking all this.

Amy answered his questions one after another, she almost seemed used to most of them, but if she was this open to random people, he could only expect as much. What what she explained it seemed the school worked in a hierarchical system ranging with ranks based on the test, but still what the test was about he hadn't got a clue, which was one of the parts he wanted to know the most. But he did manage to find out where a map is, the main lobby seemed like a good place to remember if it has multiple facilities. Lilith began to speak up next to them, looking quite panicked as her eyes widened and she asked when the tests started, her gaze fell on him a few times, but the whole reason he was asking about the tests was to find out more about them so he stayed silent looking towards Amy for the answer.

When she did though, it was little to no help as it seemed she basically had no clue either, apart from the fact it wasn't at the moment. Letting out a small sigh, he looked up as Amy gestured to her backpack, making it very apparent she was hiding something in there. Yue didn't have a clue what was in there, but could take a good guess it was a weapon or tool of sorts. Lilith stepped up to the challenge declaring she was also prepared... While also stuttering. Yue looked at her not really convinced, but suddenly some yellow butterflies appeared around her flying off. In normal circumstances this would narrow down the ability of a person to a certain skillset, but it only made Yue more confused. 'The power of butterflies? ...No that doesn't explain this weird feeling about her, who is this girl?' Snapping back to his senses, he realised she was looking at him in expectance, "O-Oh, erm well... Its hard to be prepared for something I don't know about, but if it really is made towards us and our skills, I should be fine." Glancing between the two girls in front of him, he wondered if the others at the school were as unusual as them.
