SOLEMNLY SWEAR
Thursday, September 23rd, 1978.
The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry seemed to have a special glow to it tonight. The halls would typically be rather bare on a night like this, the beginning of a new semester bringing surprise projects and a hefty amount of homework. Students trickling in and out of the library after hours of studying, or returning from evening practices on the pitch with their jerseys still stuck to sweat-soaked skin yet boisterous smiles on their faces. Tonight, however, the school seemed to breathe with a newfound air, students trickling out of their dorms to the Great Hall, a quiet hum of excited voices bouncing off the stone walls to give it a newfound life.
Floating swirls of stars lined the top of each ceiling, decorating the halls with a starry glow and silvery tinsel hung from each window. Music filtered out through the tall doors of the Great Hall, which had been closed off directly after dinner to prep for the ball. Hogwarts Annual Harvest Moon Ball had gone with a theme to honor the Moon at its fullest point, a multitude of spells seemingly bringing the night sky just a bit closer to the student’s fingertips tonight.
The Great Hall was stunning in itself. The tables had been entirely removed save for a few scattered here and there to allow some of the students a break, though most of the floor was left entirely open for dancing. The entire expanse of the black ceiling was dripping with a blanket of iridescence that morphed into beautiful renditions of constellations as far as the eye could see, complete with elaborate chandelier arrangements that involved thousands of tiny diamonds and fountains of gold light. It was reminiscent of the starry night skies that were made especially prominent during Hogwart’s winters, with spontaneous bursts of light that twirled through the cool air and dipped lower onto the dance floor to tell tales of the sprawling star fields and asteroid belts across the galaxy.
The alluring energy weaved through the walls and the gorgeously thick blue carpeting, plunging the entire Great Hall into an incredibly vivid scene of the Milky Way, the pinwheel of stars extending past where the walls should have been and wrapping the whole room in an unrivaled cosmic brilliance.
Already the Hall was slowly filling up with students— all dressed in gowns and robes of rich colors and fabric that seemed to breathe life into the decorations themselves. Every single one of them walked in ogling the spectacular sight that beheld their very eyes, stealing their breath away and capturing their attention like never before. It was like stepping into the vastness of space itself, and near impossible to make certain of where the illusions of magic began or ended.
It was a masterpiece like never before.
Hogwarts never disappointed when it came to their school dances after all.
