Totally human, I swear!
This roleplay is meant to portray a broad range of characters and a bleak setting. The views and actions of the characters are fictional, but may be based on real-world ideologies and events which could be considered disturbing. It is not meant to be an exact representation of anything that has happened in the real world. Please be responsive to the limits expressed by your fellow roleplayers, and do not be afraid to express your own limits.

  • If you don't understand what somebody else means, ask for clarification. There is no shame in it, and if anybody gives you flak about it then it is not your fault.
  • Hostility on our side of the fourth wall is needless. Things should be worked out in a civil fashion should conflict arise.
  • lease be patient with delays, as they may come due to unforeseen circumstances and last longer than intended.
  • Insensitive language belongs to insensitive characters. Ableist, racist, ageist, sexist, or otherwise expressly prejudiced language is prohibited from out-of-character descriptions and narrations, but may be used in-character. I will be inquiring about anything I find to be questionable, and may ask you to rephrase things and explain why the text in question is offensive.
  • Differences in style or creative ability are welcome here. Write script style, novel style, or anything outside and in between; Be as loquacious or laconic as you please.
  • You may not control another person's character, or make big changes to them without the consent of the roleplayer that made them.
  • You may make as many characters as you want, and there is no deadline for character creation.
  • Please make your character a relatively probable age.
  • Your character's primary trait should not be their sexuality.
  • Please no canon characters from any media, even AU versions. You can use a picture for a faceclaim, or reference canon characters in the chat or roleplay, but that's the extent of it.
  • Do not roleplay as a recognizable real-life person, even an alternate version of them. If you need a character who fills a real-life role such as the leader of a real country, make up a fictional character to replace them in-rp.
  • You may use any medium to convey your character's appearance.
  • Wait a minimum of four minutes after the last narrative post is made to post your response.
  • Please stay with this roleplay as long as you can, and do not permanently leave while your character is interacting with somebody else's. Let everyone know and find a way to write your character out if you must leave permanently.
  • f you have any other questions, feel free to ask and I'll answer when I can, and update the rules if need be. No worries, I'll let everybody know when the rules are updated, and the amendments will appear both in this post and in an additional one

The Location

Silver Hill Center for Containment and Research, located in Silver Hills, South Dakota, is primarily housed in an extensive building of Brutalist architecture. It is shaped like an octothorpe, the inner courtyard having a ceiling of thick plexiglass.
All windows are inlaid with chicken wire, and do not open without a swipe of a sufficiently cleared employee's identification card.

Creature Life

The former humans contained here, known officially as just "Creatures" are housed in individual cells, the only window of which being a sliding plexiglass door. Each cell is equipped with a landline phone capable of making calls only within the building. Other features the cells have may vary, being individualized to the needs of the Creature who lives there.
The creatures typically have free roam of common areas such as the courtyard, the Creature cafeteria, the library and any of four recreation rooms in addition to their cells. Creatures must report to their cells at evening roll call or during certain lock-down protocols and may also be confined to their cells full-time as a disciplinary measure.
Routine examinations of the creatures are done every day, while experiments are not always done at a regular interval. Experiments range from scans and blood tests, to more invasive tissue sampling, to the administration of drugs and other substances. These experiments are not typically lethal, but are often unpleasant. Occasionally, the Creatures are tested based on their capabilities, such as agility or flight speed.

Employee Life

Employees typically live in their own houses or apartments off of Silver Hill's grounds, though Silver Hill's southeastern wing has housing for special circumstances like severe weather.
Employees usually eat in their own cafeteria, but there are exceptions to this, such as security guards eating while they keep an eye on the Creatures or researchers and therapists trying to build rapport with the Creatures.
Employees of all kinds are expected to keep discretionary emotional distance from the Creatures. Though it is evident to many of them that the Creatures are not vicious, inhuman monsters as the government would want them to seem, most of the Employees of Silver Hill would consider treating the Creatures they work with as fully human to be anthropomorphism. The modes and intensities of this dehumanization are varied, ranging from patronizing attitudes to outright aggression.

The Truth

There is no known cause for the mysterious transformations. The Creatures' genome is indistinguishable from an ordinary human's. No microbes or contaminants have been found in the Creature's body that aren't also present in untransformed humans. Indeed, even to those most learned in this topic, the only universal differences seem to be in form, physiology, and ability. Though occasionally mild to moderate changes in instinct and behavior are present, most Creatures are indistinguishable from their human self in cognition, communication, and other mental capacities.
