BIOGRAPHY

Personality:
Dick was born into an artistic family, his father being an artist long before becoming a businessman. As such Dick has always valued self expression and creativity over conventional skills. Rather than attending regular school, Dick was raised on film sets. This created a different set of values for him compared to other men of his generation, as Dick didn’t see a need to try and succeed in life, instead wishing to live a fulfilling life. Even when that changed for his father, who had been jaded by years of being a businessman, Dick remained positive and just wishing to be an artist.

Dick loves to learn new things, perhaps his most studious aptitude. Since he was young he wanted to learn how to use a camera, or write a script, or create a set. While of course his first love is film, Dick has also read many books throughout his life, whether they be stories, science, or psychology. Another aspect of this is that Dick is always interested in new technologies, especially the talking motion pictures.

While most people who only see Dick from a distance would think him composed, he is really a bundle of nerves. The stress of working at, and soon becoming the head of a major motion picture company has left Dick shaken. He has taken to drinking to quell these thoughts, but that itself has proofed to be a problem as he drinks to excess. While doing a little bit better right now, Dick is still one wrong night away from falling back into total alcoholism.

The aspect of himself that Dick hides the most is his sexuality. While coming of age around the beauties of the film industry, Dick would also notice the men as well. Not believing himself homosexual as he did like women, Dick has no clue what bisexuality is. Dick has managed to go most of his life burying these feelings deep down, but he did slip up once while aided by the power of the drink.

History:
Dick’s father was Arthur Awbrey, a Welsh artist who experimented with cameras. Alongside his friend Dylan Baughan, Arthur would create a name for himself in the European art scene. However it was on a trip to Paris in 1895 that Arthur and Dylan first saw a moving film. Enraptured by it the two wanted to learn as much as possible about it, spending several years trying to get their own. This search would take them to America, where they would work under Thomas Edison. Around this period Arthur would marry an American woman named Meredith, soon having a son named Richard.

As a small child, Dick would be on the sets of various films under Thomas Edison. Dylan would become an accomplished cameraman while Dick’s father Arthur handled behind the scenes issues. By the Nineteen-Tens, both Welsh men were regarded well in the American film business. In 1915 they would make the jump to producers when they opened up AW-BAU Pictures.

Now living in Los Angeles, Dick and his family would be happy as the studio had hit after hit. Dick would eschew going to normal school, instead being taught in the business. From a young age Dick knew that he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps, to be a titan of the film industry. To that end, Dick would begin appearing in AW-BAU films from the age of twelve, mostly in background roles. It was on these sets that Dick made friends with a lot of the greats.

By the time Dick reached sixteen he had begun actually working at AW-BAU Pictures. It wouldn’t take long for him to realize that there was tension between the two owners. Arthur Awbrey wanted to stick with the tried and true comedies and period pieces, while Dylan Baughan wanted to take from the experimental stuff happening in Europe. This tension almost split apart the studio. But Dick would step up, becoming a voice of reason for the two men from Wales.

While he was trying to manage the studio, Dick continued to watch almost every film that came out at his local cinema. That was around the time he first saw a Lon Chaney horror film. Dick was immediately smitten. While he had read horror books before, a well worn copy of Frankenstein still on his bookshelf at home, he hadn’t realized how powerful it had been on screen. From then on Dick championed horror at AW-BAU Pictures.

Dick’s father would not agree, instead saying they stuck with Buster Keaton and other actors who brought in the laughs. Frustrated, Dick would take up drinking. Of course since prohibition was a thing, he did it in secret, under the veil of mob owned speakeasies. Dick would soon develop a problem, drinking to the point of blackout. He would continue to hide this till he awoke one morning in jail. Apparently he had been harassing people on the street the night before.

Arthur Awbrey would bail Dick out, using his connections to quash the story. Deeply embarrassed, Dick promised to quit drinking. Dick would then return to the studio just as talking movies were becoming a thing. Amazed by the technology, Dick would champion for its use at AW-BAU Pictures. But just as he was discussing it with his father, Dick would relapse.

Returning to the speakeasies, Dick would drink all kind of powerful brews. He didn’t remember most of the night, but Dick remembers that he hooked up with a gentleman in the washroom, something he had never done before. Once again embarrassed, Dick would learn that the mafia head of the club was aware of what happened in the washroom, and would hold the information in case he needed a favor from Dick.

Dick would then throw himself into his work, trying to block out the bad memories. Under his burgeoning leadership, AW-BAU Pictures began to pull ahead again, having several popular films that year. While Dick won’t admit it, he still does drink on stressful days, but has been able to limit it so he doesn’t blackout.

EXTRAS

List any scandals they were part of, whether they were made public or swept under the rug:
Anyone who frequents the speakeasies in Los Angeles knows Dick is a regular customer. It is also known that he usually drinks too much. This did result in him being arrested for disorderly conduct. This whole arrest was covered up by Arthur Awbrey, quashing the story, and paying off the local police. The mafia is also aware that Dick had relations with a man, though they have decided to hold onto this information for the time being.

List any powerful connections they have:
Most of Dick’s connections are in the film world, knowing several big name actors and directors. He has met some of the mafia bosses of Los Angeles, as he visits their speakeasies, but has no real pull with them, just being another customer.

Any other interesting facts:
Dick does dream of writing his own films, but feels he’s not good enough. However he does write a lot of poetry, which he mostly keeps to himself. He also has a penchant for outdoor activities like gardening and fishing. Dick is also ambidextrous.
