who turned off the lights?
chapter one
rainy
10:32pm
Mostly silence played throughout the residency as it was quite late into the night. Even with the dull stillness, the tenants were overusing electricity. And, with a soft “fuse” sound, the lights dimmed out in seconds. The heating system was switched off, the WiFi disappeared, but most importantly there was no more light illuminating the apartments.

So who turned off the lights?

He had been talking to his parents when the lights flickered and then a small noise was hear, the lights shutting off, along with his connection dropping. He sat in the darkness, chills creeping up his back as he turned the flashlight on, on his phone. He was terrified of the dark, and he found himself moving off of his chair, crawling on the floor so he could find his way to Sin who was asleep. He found his way into the small bed, curling up next to the taller boy, his arms slipping around him, hoping her didn't startle the boy too bad in case he didn't hear him.

He held the boy close, burying his face in his shoulder as he sighed quietly. His phone pinged a few times and he glanced at it, picking it up and messaging his parents about the issue before opening up the tenant gc. At Jisung's words about 'whar idiot used all the power', he rolled his eyes, of course Jisung would say that instead of worrying about the others. He responded before putting the phone down, cuddling back into Sin.

chie mukai

Chie's fingers fell flat on her keyboard, the soft typing that previously filled her apartment silenced. A small shard of light gleamed across her lap, the only light to be seen in her now dark apartment. She swung herself out of the plush chair she was positioned in and blindly reached for her phone, sighing with relief when her hand closed around it. She clicked it on, rapidly tapping and swiping in a intricate pattern as she checked all her apps. The chat she had joined with the other residents was blowing up, new notifications rapidly replacing the ones before them. Gently furrowing her brows, she skimmed over the confused texts. She tapped her foot lightly, looking over her shoulder anxiously.
"Hey Kana, can I come over??? Sorry" She typed, sending the message. Her eyes flicked around the darkened apartment before she shook her head and chuckled lightly. What am I even looking for? It's not like anything would've gotten into my apartment in the past few minutes... Glancing back down, she noted with a smile that Kana had invited anyone in need over. So she grabbed her small clutch from the mantle and faltered to her door, sprinting across the hall to Kana's apartment. She knocked gently, bouncing on her heels as she waited with a smile.

The paintbrush glided effortlessly over the canvas, blending the sunset colors in a few fluid motions. It was so therapeutic, the soft music playing from her kitchen, and the satisfaction that this was her last piece for the exhibit. She had been living in her room for what seemed like months, doing nothing but working on paintings for the watercolor exhibit she had been so honored to be invited to join. She was a mess though. Sleep had become a myth, the evidence being the dark circles under her focused eyes. Her dark hair was piled up in a messy bun, various strands having fallen out and framing her face. But she didn't care. She never saw anyone anyways. She would look put together when she had to leave the apartment.

Hye-jin leaned back with a soft hum, eyes narrowed as she looked over the piece. It was the biggest piece of her work, it being a sunset reflecting off the calm waters of a lake, but it was the most difficult for her. She wanted it to look perfect, not too realistic, but not surreal or abstract. It needed a balance. Her perfectionism was her downfall in these situations. In the past, she had tried too hard to make the perfect painting and ruined it which had led to a week of her just loathing her existence and sleeping. It was a rough time. "I just need to put the final highlights on the clouds and I'll be done." She was speaking to herself, but it made her feel a lot more confident in finishing the painting. Maybe she'd get five hours of sleep, that would be good.

But it seemed that luck was not on her side. As Hye-jin went to dip her brush in the paint, the lights switched off, alongside her music. It was pitch black in her apartment and she froze. Her whole body was rigid as she sat on the stool, her brain totally blank. Slowly she started to realize what was actually happening. The power was off. The paint was still wet and she couldn't see which meant she couldn't continue to paint. Panic filled her entire being and suddenly she was about to hyperventilate. The exhibit was in one day and her main piece was going to be ruined. Hye-jin did the only she could do besides screaming, which was texting the group chat.

Her fingers typed furiously as she tried to use her phone to light up the canvas. It was difficult though, especially since it was so large. She hated the dark in general, but her fear of it was overruled by the terrifying feeling of ruining the exhibit, getting a bad grade in school and being a failure of an artist. (She exaggerates a lot). Finally, the last person she'd expect to help offered his services. Ji-sung wasn't a bad person by any means, frankly, he was like a cat, but he usually seemed so awkward around her so she was cautious whenever they interacted. But that didn't matter. She'd have someone to hold a light so that she could actually finish the painting. Still, time was against her and she felt anxious as she waited for the younger to arrive at her place.

Aneko tripped as the lights flickered out, landing ungracefully on the floor. She laughed sweetly as she realized that the power had cut, immediately reaching for her phone. She logged on to the chat, smirking as she read through the messages. " Ooh, on my way babe" She sent happily, swooping up off the floor. She sauntered to the spacious vanity in her bedroom, turning on the large lights that flanked her mirror. They were battery powered and the harsh light cast eerie shadows over Aneko's face. She hummed smoothly as she brushed through her hair, twisting stray strands into loose curls.
Dotting on a pretty coral lipstick, she pouted and added a light gloss before nodding at her satisfactory work. After plastering on her signature honey-sweet smile, she strode comfortably out into the dark hallway. The carpeted floor softened the usually sharp clicks of her stilettos and the only sound was her brisk knock echoing down the hall.

jiae hyunsun

Jiae was curled up on her side when the lights shut off. She clenched her blanket, burrowing deeper into the nest she had built for herself. A beam of light was cast up to the ceiling by an incoming notification on her phone, and she turned it on exhaustedly. The glowing phone screen was her only source of light and Jiae's eyes casually wandered up to the top right corner. Exhaling painfully slowly, she drew in a breath before screaming. Across her apartment, a batch of charred muffins sat still steaming. Jiae had decided to try to replicate Kana's muffins because she didn't feel like going over, and had ruined a muffin tray and wasted an hour in the process. They tasted like charcoal. Having no wifi didn't help with her delicate emotional state either.
She flipped over to stare up at the ceiling, frowning profusely. Turning back around, she nuzzled her face into the pillow. Might as well get some sleep.

chai tea
Chaisai stared up at the ceiling, waiting for his body to shut down into sleep mode. But, per usual, it was refusing to show the teenager mercy, and falling asleep wasn’t coming too easy for him. This became his nightly routine, stare up at the ugly popcorn ceilings until sleep washing over him. He blinked slowly, his eyelids drooping down, with each second, they grew heavier. The only thing lighting up his room was some cow nightlight his aunt bought him before he moved to Korea. It was quite childish, but it did its job. It wasn’t like anyone was staying over to see it. As soon as that little animal light shut off, he sat right up. He couldn’t sleep without it on. It was one of the only things that cured his aching homesickness.

He shoved the blankets off of him with a slight irritation leaking through his usual calm facial features. As soon as he was about to fall into a blissful sleep, his cherished nightlight broke. Frowning, he got off his bed and kneeled down to the cartoon-cow light before gently pulling it from the plug. But, it wasn’t the only thing seemingly broken in the apartment, the radiator wasn’t producing any heat. His brows knitted together as he reached out to press his hand against the radiator, nothing was there besides reminisces of heat.

“Are you kidding me?” He sighed as crossed his legs on the wooden floor, his back pressing against the dark wall. He patted around in the dark for his phone, eventually finding it after long moments of blindly hitting things. He held the device in front of his face, preparing himself to ask what was wrong with the power in the tenant’s group chat. Much to his pleasure, people were already asking. He was relieved to find out that nothing was wrong with his apartment, and he wouldn’t have to replace the bulb in his nightlight.

After a replying a few times to his neighbors, he decided it was best to ignore future messages, and instead focus on fixing the lighting situation. Tea wasn’t a candle fanatic, but he had quite a few because ‘they created soothing scents.’ He doesn’t use them as often as he did when he first moved in. Then, he had a reason to use them, he had to air the horrifying scent out.

After searching for matches for a solid five minutes, he was finally able to gather all the candles together and light them. One by one, little sections of the apartment were being lit out. “Hope this isn’t a fire hazard,” He muttered to himself as he placed the last one on the living room table. His house looked like some setup from a pathetic guy in a romantic movie. Without any context, it could be rather embarrassing.

The room felt so empty without the sound of the heater. The rain felt distant. He wasn’t used to this sound in the dead of winter. No heater noises or warmth; it was just strange. He was hoping the apartment owner was already working on this issue, so he could plug his light back in and sleep.

A late night shower was just the thing he needed to calm down after a long day of arguing. His boyfriend had gotten chewed out by one of the tenants for basically asking them for free food and it caused a lot of issues. Long story short, the pink-haired model was spending the night alone with a group chat being his only source of company.

Mainly he wanted to talk to Chaisai but he didn't have any pressing matters, plus he didn't want to get on the topic of boyfriends and get a little lecture again. Sunan got out of the shower and dried off his body, quickly getting dressed into comfortable sleeping clothes. He put on a random Netflix show and just began to do his nightly routine. Going to bed was probably the best solution for him anyways. He had only gotten into Korea that morning after a long flight from his last shoot location. He was tired from the plane ride and the argument, so he wanted to sleep.

Putting on a headband, he pushed his bangs back and out of his face so he could wash it comfortably. It was all fine and dandy until he was in the middle of rinsing the soap off and the water stopped working. He couldn't open his eyes because of the soap and so he fumbled around aimlessly for something. "Oh my god, this cannot be happening. I'm going to open my eyes and there's going to be a murderer or crazy fan. Yup, I'm going to die tonight" Sunan tried to turn on the water again, but nothing happened so he could only groan and complain. The Thai man eventually found his towel and wiped the soap off his face, but it still didn't get everything. His vision was a bit blurry as his eyes were currently on fire due to soap getting in them.

The pain was almost blinding (wink wink) and he swore a lot, clumsily trying to turn on a light or something so he could get at least a water bottle and rinse his face again. But he couldn't see anything. With a loud thud, the tall male tripped over his coffee table and landed on the floor with a loud shriek of surprise and pain. He stayed on the floor, no longer being able to distinguish where the pain was coming from. Maybe if he just slept there, it would be fine in the morning. He didn't know why he had such bad luck, but it was always there. At photoshoots, he'd fall into a pool, break a prop, hit his coworker on accident. It was always something that caused issues and embarrassment.

Sunan decided to deal with the pain and forced his slender frame to get up and head back into the bathroom so he could look at his phone. It was difficult at first, but he forced himself to ignore the burning sensation and just looked through the group chat. So the power was out. Great. Nice going. He whined softly and rubbed his eyes, not knowing what to do. Normally he would spend time with his boyfriend, but the man was probably off somewhere doing God knows what. Still, Sunan dialed the number and waited for him to answer. It went to voicemail so he explained the situation and hung up the phone. His next and most reasonable option was to see if anyone wanted to help him out.

The messages were a bit, on the accusing side, but he appreciated the concern his friends had for him. Sunan managed to sit on his couch without tripping on something and just relaxed as much as possible. Thoughts about his boyfriend and his not so good habits bounced around his head and made him sigh. He was a good guy, he just wasn't comfortable with Sunan's friends so he didn't act sweet. Whatever. They would be okay. At least that's what he told himself.

Sin Yang wasn’t aware of the current situation. The mounds of blankets on top of him prevented him from feeling any temperature change whatsoever, and he was still fast asleep. But, the dead body under the blanket came alive again when the phone beside him began buzzing rapidly. His tired limb reached out from the mound of blankets, into chilly air to grab the device. Something was off with the temperature of the apartment, but his fuzzy mind wasn’t able to comprehend what was going on. To protect himself, he pulled the covers over his head, creating an even warmer barrier.

He squinted as his eyes adjusted to the bright light of the phone. Once his blurry vision cleared up, he was able to read the messages that were popping up in the group chat. They were messaging about the power going out. He was too tired to read much more of it, but he ended up typing a few things into the group chat before slowly falling back to sleep.

Warm hands wrapping themselves around him brought him back to consciousness, and his eyes opened once more. Although he couldn’t see anything in the pitch black, he knew it was Jason, and he instantly became comfortable in the other’s embrace. Was it strange for friends do stuff like that? He never had a close friend like Jason, so everything felt new. But, still, stuff like this was a rare occurrence. “Hm? What is it?” He muttered softly. “The power went out.” Those words were a reminder for himself and weren't meant for the male beside him. He assumed Jason was frightened, so he climbed into bed with him.

He glanced over to the direction of the door when he vaguely heard the sound of knocking. But, he wasn’t sure if he was imagining things. His hearing wasn’t the best, so he couldn’t tell whether it was real or not. Blinking, he gently pulled himself away from Jason before climbing out of the bed.

The half-asleep male stumbled to the door, his arms hanging heavily by his side. Who could be at the door this late at night? Perhaps if he fully read the group chat, he would’ve been able to know. “I’m here, I’m here,” He said through the door. He twisted the doorknob and pulled the door open. As he stared at the dark abyss in front of him, he could barely make out a figure of a woman, but shews there. “Yeah?” He spoke, his voice rather raspy. “What do you need?”

Jason huffed quietly as Sin spoke, feeling bad he had woken the male up, but in a sense he was kind of glad since he didn't feel as lonely or scared with him up. At the knocking, Jason jumped, his arms tightening around him almost protectively for a second before he let go, he was about to move and get the door but Sin was already up and heading for it. He heard the voice and sat up, crawling out of the bed and stumbling to the door.

"Aneko?" He asked curiously, "You actually came?" He laughed, "Come on in."

"It's okay Sin. While you were asleep I made a joke about how someone should come cuddle me because you were asleep and I guess she actually did come." He smiled at her, "She's already here so let's just chill and wait out the blackout." He shivered at the cool air on his bare arms and legs, moving to grab one of Sin's hoodies and slipping it on, finding it more comfortable since it was a lot bigger then his own.

Aneko grinned brightly, placing her hand on the shoulder of the stranger that came to the door. She smiled even brighter when Jason came to the door, leaning forward to plant a friendly kiss on his cheek. Swiveling around so she faced Sin, she swung her arm around Jason's shoulder. "Oh, don't be so surprised!" She trilled. "Nice to meet you, Sin. I'm Aneko." She said flirtatiously, raising her hand to her lips as she giggled shyly.
She treaded cautiously into the dark apartment, twisting a strand of raven hair around her bright red nail. "So, do either you happen to know who caused this? I would like my internet back.."

Jungha was pissed. For starters, her professors assigned a project that they obviously conspired together that consisted of multiple components due in eighteen days — despite her constant complaining, though, she is as good of a student as she can attempt to be. The students had been required to choose a topic relative to the youth, so she chose social isolation (because anybody can still feel utterly alone, even if surrounded by people). The assignment consisted of a news or feature article component, a social media component, a video documentary component, and a photo gallery. Any reasonable person would think that this were to be completed as a group project, but her professors decided against the idea and assigned it individually.

She'd gone through the entire day without punching a wall, a feat that she felt deserved congratulations. After taking a shower, Jungha began to work on typing up her article at around ten at night, occasionally side-tracking herself to write down the names of psychology and social experts she could interview for the article, as well as fellow peers. As she finished writing down the name of a professor from Hanyang University, Jungha took a glance at her laptop screen. A pop-up on her Google Docs page was alerting her that there was no internet connection.

Sighing, she set her notebook down beside her crossed legs and leaned forward to move the mouse towards the WiFi triangle. When she clicked on it, she waited a few moments to wait the apartment complex's WiFi, only to realize that it was not appearing. Sighing once more in the span of a minute, Jungha began to climb off her bed to get herself a glass of water from the kitchen. Surely, if she stepped away from her laptop for a few seconds, she could return to stable internet connection.

When Jungha stepped out of her bedroom, she froze immediately. The single light that she always left in her kitchen was turned off, and the remainder of her home was plunged into absolute darkness. Her first thought was that someone broke into her house. She made a move to grab the nearest object she could get her hands on to utilize as a weapon, her hands wrapping around her Shakespearean Literature textbook. "I swear to fucking God, if someone is in here, I will beat you with a textbook." Any normal person would simply go back to their bedroom and grab their cellphone, but Jungha was past coherent and reasonable thinking.

The absolute silence that responded to her made her falter, lowering her arms and setting the book back down on the table she grabbed it from. Jungha turned and walked back into her bedroom, finally reaching for her cellphone from where it charged on her bedside table. The power must've gone out, she finally realized when she noticed that her phone had ceased charging and was disconnected from the internet. Luckily, she could send out a message to the group chat that consisted of the other tenants. From what she read, the others had realized the power had gone out. Jungha made her presence known by yelling at Hyejin with her permission.

There was no possible way that the rain outside could be the cause behind the power outage. It was surely their landlord's fault; he must've forgotten to pay for the electrical billing, or didn't pay it in full price. Grunting, Jungha slid her phone into the back pocket of her jeans and hurriedly tied her shoes on. She intended on giving the landlord a piece of her mind — for all she knew, she lost her article draft.

In mere minutes, she was out the door of her apartment and flying down the dark hallway and staircase, a stern look of frustration set on her features. She was certainly pissed.

It came to no surprise that Kana was prepared for the power outage. As soon as the lights began to flicker and her oven shut off instantaneously, she was stepping around her kitchen to her sitting room, where she kept a cabinet with candles. There was nineteen to be exact, a result of her unexplainable need to purchase any discounted candle, especially those that smelt of lavender. Ensuring that each candle had a wick to catch fire, she began to grab three at a time and situated them in different areas of her abode, her feet gliding across the floor in a fluid routine, as if she had practiced for a situation like this daily.

With five in the sitting room, four in the kitchen, two in the bathroom, two in her bedroom, and the remaining candles scattered around in hallway corners, her apartment was illuminated with a faint orange glow from the flames she'd lit with a lighter. A satisfied smile stretched to her lips, then forged into an expression of concern as she moved back to the kitchen, where she had left her phone. Surely enough, she had multiple notifications from the other tenants regarding the power outage.

After reassuring the others that they were free to make themselves comfortable in her apartment, which was lit up with candles. She intended on bringing out the blankets she kept stored away for when the heat chilled into a cold that nipped at everyone's bare skin, and board games that made homage in her bedroom drawers. The truffle chocolate mix she'd been stirring sat atop her kitchen island, untouched since the lights had gone off. Kana had been in the process of creating a truffle chocolate pie, and planned on finishing up the bottom layer before pouring it into the pie crust she'd made with crushed graham crackers, then sticking it into her refrigerator overnight.

Suddenly remembering that she had bought multiple flashlights months before, Kana hurried out of the kitchen, her fingers tapping away at her phone screen to notify the other tenants that she had flashlights if they needed one. In her bedroom, she bent down beside her bed to grab a box from underneath, where she had kept the flashlights stored. She grabbed the three in the box and turned them on to make sure the batteries hadn't died. Glad that they indeed worked, she smiled and peered down at her phone, reading over a text that Hyejin had sent, asking for a flashlight. A few seconds later, Jisung alerted that he would be grabbing the flashlight for him and Hyejin.

As she rose from the bedroom floor, a knock sounded from her door. "It's open!" she chirped, making her way to the hallway to greet whoever it was. Her hands were occupied with the flashlights, but Kana didn't hesitate to move one to be held between her thighs and using her now-free right hand to open the door. She glanced up at Chie and grinned. "Come in, come in. Every room in the apartment is lit by candles!"

Moving away from the door to let the other girl walk in, Kana walked back to the living room, gently setting the flashlights down on the table situated in front of the couch. She grabbed her phone from her pocket and opened the group chat, thinking for a moment. Everyone but Jiae and Juwon had shared their current whereabouts, and Kana couldn't help but begin to worry. She sent out a text to the group chat, then turned off her phone to look at Chie. "Do you need anything?"

The cafe had a steady flow of customers, many coming only to hear her sing, which was a great feeling in all honesty. She felt her confidence rise the more people sat there and clapped for her, singing along to some of the songs she covered. It was always fun to perform for people that were really into it. The pay wasn't bad either. The weather on the otherhand was a total bitch. It started raining in the middle of her walk back to the complex, and she was completely unprepared. With no umbrella in hand, Juwon suffered in the cold rain, running down the sidewalk to the best of her abilities. The slush on the concrete was everything but pleasant and her shoes were thoroughly soaked by the time she arrived.

The dark building didn't even phase her as she walked inside, wringing out her long black hair, the water splattering all over the tile floor. "God, that was fucking stupid. I hate rain" She sighed dramatically, flipping her hair over her shoulder and out of the way. Oh well. Maybe she could take a bath and just forget about the fact her makeup was smeared and she looked like a wet rat. That'd be pretty chill. Juwon pressed the elevator button with a sigh, shifting her weight from foot to foot as she waited for it to get to her level. Only it didn't. The light never came on and nothing really happened. She pressed the button two more times and there was still no reactions. So she did what any rational person would do, she pressed it as many times as she could.

Juwon let out an annoyed noise before she kicked the button as if it was totally normal to do so. But the elevator didn't show any signs of working. That's when she decided to complain in the group chat. Leave it to her friends to not tell her the elevator was out. The YouTuber then began the climb up the stairs, scrolling through her Instagram to keep herself occupied. It really never dawned on her that the whole building was out of power, even when she reached her own apartment. It wasn't until she went to Kana's place (as usual), that she realized something was wrong. There were a bunch of people already there and candles littered the entire place.

"Unnie? Did something die? Why does it look like you're holding a sacrifice or funeral...?" She furrowed her eyebrows together and slowly processed everything. "Wait, did the power go out?" Juwon rubbed the back of her head and looked at all the previous messages, seeing that every resident was complaining about it. Some people were ready to fight, others were just confused, it seemed to be pretty fun. "How am I supposed to shower? I'm soaked from head to toe!" She groaned and took off her dripping shoes and walked further into the apartment, looking for the blonde haired baker. "Unnie, you should've called me. I would've picked stuff up at the store to help you out with this"

She wasn't really concerned about the outage since she already had her videos up for the week, but she was concerned about not being able to shower. Plus her makeup was a mess and she did NOT want to look like a mess in front of Kana. That was a huge no no in her book. Number one thing to not do was look bad. She tried to fix her appearance to the best of her ability by using a candle for light and her phone camera, but it wasn't much help. "I wonder if the landlord knows about this. Has anyone stopped by and checked on him?"

Perhaps he lit too many candles. He had a feeling something would catch aflame if he didn’t put out a few of the lit wicks. So, he went around, placing the lids back onto a majority of the candles to kill the mini, hazardous fires. But as the realization came of what he had done, it was already far too late; he wasted matches lighting those candles. He let out an annoyed groan before falling back onto the loveseat. The remaining candles gave the living space an orangey hue and filled it with scents of sweet fruits. At least something good came out of the candles.

He laid back against a throw people and pulled another into his arms. Would it be like this the whole night? Eventually, he’d fall asleep from exhaustion, but that would be much later into the night. He’d probably die of boredom before even got an ounce of shut-eye. But, like a saving grace, his phone buzzed, and Sunan’s name shown across the screen. And, he needed major saving.

The group chat turned a little bitter after Chaisai threw a few insults towards Sunan’s current boyfriend, who of course was an asshole. He was some lazy sleaze who just freeloaded off of everyone. The Thai male doubted he was getting his message across, but he still felt good digging at his friend’s lover. It seemed the elder had troubles when it came to dating, and his taste in men was really bad. For god sake, the kid’s boyfriend ditched him like he was nothing. They were all terrible people.

But, of course, the insults ended, and Chai promised to go and pick Sunan up, who had injured himself on accident multiple times.

He stood up from his comfy position on the couch, preparing himself to leave. While reaching for the door, he stopped himself. Should he change his clothes, or would that be strange? He was dressed in pajamas, but it didn’t feel appropriate. Would he embarrass himself in front of Sunan? Usually, he wore clothing that matched -- but, his pajamas never matched. Then it occurred to him, who would even see him in the pitch black? It was nearly reaching eleven, and the only light illuminating the hallways were the dim streetlamps.

He used his phone’s flashlight while navigating the corridor. The eerie darkness led him to feel slightly anxious as he wandered down the hall. He would hold up his flashlight to each door, and each time he would mildly be disappointed when he saw it wasn’t the right one. Until he finally landed on the correct apartment.

He slowly opened the door and peaked his head in. “Sunan?” He called out before slipping in the dark room. “It’s Tea. I’ve come to save you.” He paused for a few moments before chuckling lightly. “To save you from yourself.”

The pinkette rolled onto his stomach and hid his face in a pillow, just mentally preparing for seeing Chaisai. He had texted off and on while he was at the shoot, but it wasn't often since there was a time difference and Chai was always busy with class. So they didn't really get to talk all that much, and Hoseok didn't exactly approve of their close relationship. But Sunan was convinced it was just because Chaisai was unfriendly whenever he met a boyfriend of the model. He was a very picky person and never missed a chance to give a sassy remark about his choice in partners. It was upsetting but it was attention from the younger that Sunan had that nobody else did. He liked to know that he was cared about in that way.

Sunan jolted up into a sitting position when he heard a voice break through the silence of his apartment. "Chai? I'm on the couch. Watch out for my stuff on the floor, I haven't had time to unpack since I arrived this morning" He didn't remember that he had his headband on and wasn't wearing any makeup, he was just focused on seeing the shorter, yet incredibly handsome features of his friend. Sunan outstretched his arms like a child wanting to be hugged by its favorite sibling or something. "Thank you for coming over~ I would get up and hug you but my shin really hurts and it hurts to open my eyes" While the last part was true, his eyes were still open, struggling to adapt to the darkness. But when the teen got closer, he could see his features and it made his heart flutter.

It was the usual feeling he had whenever they were together. It had been maybe over a year since they had met and every time they hung out, the taller couldn't help but feel like your typical female lead in any kdrama. He would just listen to Chai all day and night if he let him. He was rough around the edges and didn't always express himself but he was so charming and sweet that Sunan couldn't help but like him. The crush was only a crush though. If he actually confessed, he was positive he'd ruin their precious friendship. So he held back and didn't allow himself to do anything to cause the male problems.

"Did you miss me while I was gone? I brought back some snacks that I thought we could eat together but I guess they aren't really useful right now" He felt out of his element as he rubbed his stinging eyes, looking more like a child than an adult. It was difficult for him to actually seem his age. His appearance looked like a high schooler's and his personality was a lot less masculine than most and he tended to be overly passive and let people walk all over him. "I don't really know where to go, do you think Kana has stuff to wash my eyes with? They really burn but my head also kind of hurts so maybe I'm dying"

Sunan was a bit nervous, actually scratch that, he was really nervous. He had been getting into arguments with Chaisai in the group chats and it was upsetting, especially when the younger bullied him a little harsher than usual. He just wanted to make sure they were okay. "You know, you could totally be like a fire fighter or something. Tea to the rescue could be your slogan, it'd be great" His native language slipped easily from his lips and he tried to make himself feel more comfortable and confident, but it didn't work. He could tell that his face was bright red, his heart was beating stupidly loud, and his hands were awkwardly gripping his shorts in nervousness. God, he was a mess and they didn't even do anything. Maybe he should actually consider moving in with his boyfriend.

Sin Yang wasn’t expecting such an abrupt greeting. First expressions, the stranger was very outgoing. She reached for him and touched him, which caused him instinctively step back to protect himself. He was never much of a touchy person, especially with new people. Not to mention, the flirty approached wasn’t something he was expecting so late at night, and he was still dazed and confused.

But, the woman’s approach to Jason woke him right up. He blinked as he watched her interact with him. The dark was making it difficult for him to see, but he could make out a kiss on the cheek. Was he missing something? He was so puzzled with the whole situation. They couldn’t be dating, right? He would’ve been told. He nodded slowly when she introduced herself. Unfortunately, the introduction didn’t clear up any of Sin’s questions, but it was a start.

He watched as she further infiltrated the little apartment. Wait out the blackout with her? That seemed rather uncomfortable, at least for him. He was fine with her being over, but he was dying to crawl back under the mounds of blankets and sleep. But, alas, Sin wouldn’t say anything. He wouldn’t let any words fall from his mouth. They weren’t caught in his throat or on the tip of his tongue; he just didn’t have anything to say.

Well, besides the fact that he wanted to go to bed.

Aneko spoke again, which caused Sin to turn his attention back to her. But, he could only shrug at her before mumbling something along the lines of how he didn’t know. How would he know? He slept through the power going out. He assumed someone probably had too much plugged in at once or the power box was just too old.

He moved past the two to sit on his bed. Although he wanted to lay under the sheets, he only sat on the mattress, on top of the covers. It felt wrong to be impolite and go straight to sleep. He should at least give her a chance. She was a guest after all.

If Jason was okay with her, he should be too.

As a kiss was planted on his cheek, he stood there stunned for a second, his cheeks turning bright red and he had never been so thankful for a blackout before. An arm slipped around him and he allowed it, just looking at Sin's silhouette.

"I don't know, it suddenly turned off when I was talking to my parents.." Jason frowned, rubbing the back of his neck. "I wish it would come back on as well.. This is the first time I've been able to speak to my parents all month." He pouted, sitting beside Sin and laying his head on the males shoulder as he continued to pout like a small child.

"We don't have many chairs but you an sit in my desk chair?" He spoke, motioning towards the wooden chair with a pillow on it. He could feel Sin was uncomfortable so he gently rubbed his back, letting him relax against him. "Sorry, she comes off strong." He whispered in Sin's ear, giving him a smile. "There's chaos going down in the groupchat right now too.. Why would somebody give Jisung a lighter out of everyone here.." He spoke towards Aneko.

Those are the ones who will kill you.” [/div] [div class="divider"][/div] [div class="textbox"] [div class="scroll"]Ji-sung could feel his lumpy mattress digging into his back as he lay down to sleep. The old mattress had come with the apartment, and he was currently regretting not splurging on a new one. He wondered vaguely whether a good night's rest would be worth the 200,000 won he'd have to spend on it. He shifted onto his side. It was still uncomfortable. He shifted onto his stomach. No difference.

Giving up, he threw off his blankets and sat up. He went to check his Twitter, only to find that there was no WiFi. Was there something wrong with his router? Ji-sung made his way across the room, stumbling over the piles of clothes on the floor. It had been weeks since he'd made the effort to tidy his apartment. When he wasn't training, he was studying, so maintaining his living space had fallen by the wayside. He would get around to cleaning up sometime. Just not today.

Plopping down beside the router, it seemed like it wasn't even on. He unplugged it and plugged it back in, but it was still off. Deciding to look up the problem, Ji-sung turned on his mobile data and a message popped up on his screen.

so uh, we out here with no power huh

Seriously? That was the reason Ji-sung had to get out of his warm bed? Because some asshole decided to plug in too many things at once? He expressed his discontent in the group chat, only to be met with a lukewarm response. Then he saw Hye-jin ask for a flashlight. Well, it's not like he had anything better to do. Staying in his apartment, alone, in the dark, wasn't exactly Ji-sung's idea of fun. Watching Hye-jin paint was about the most entertainment he was going to get.

He looked presentable enough in his t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms, but decided to pull on a jumper over it as well. The poor insulation meant that the heat was quickly escaping from the apartment, and he wasn't too keen on freezing to death during a power outage. He fumbled over to the door, trying his best not to bump into anything. When he managed to wade his way through the random objects lying on the ground, Ji-sung decided that he was definitely going to clean up his room after the power comes back on.

Now that he was outside in the corridor, Ji-sung realised just how quiet the apartment block had become. If he listened closely, he could even hear the faint patter of rain on the ground outside. As a young child, he had always loved the sound of rain drumming against the window. But as he got older, he found out that it was only pleasant when you had the privilege of staying inside. At times like this, Ji-sung felt grateful to not be outside in the pouring rain.

Ji-sung arrived at Kana's apartment, finding it to be surprisingly well-lit. At least, it was well-lit compared to his apartment. "Noona? I'm here for the flashlight." He called out. As he made his way inside, he spotted Ju-won fixing her makeup. "Oh. You're here too." He said mildly. "What the hell happened to your face?" Well, it didn't matter. Hye-jin seemed to urgently need light, so he decided he wouldn't stop to talk. He picked up a flashlight from the table and turned it on and off to check that it was working properly. Everything seemed to be in order. "Hey, if you see Kana noona, then tell her thanks for the flashlight." He told Ju-won, before rushing off.

Standing in front of Hye-jin's doorstep, Ji-sung knocked on the door. "I'm here, with a flashlight, so maybe answer the door." He muttered, mostly to himself. When he thought about it, he hadn't seen her face to face for a while. As usual, she was ever the recluse. In any case, he was looking forward to seeing her painting. It was true that he felt awkward around her, and frankly just a little bit intimidated, but he couldn't deny that she was a talented artist.

aneko hyunsun

"Ah, I'm good." Her bashful laugh rang out and the mention of Jisung who had always been an interesting neighbor to have. She grinned cheerfully, gently tilting her head to reveal a deep set of dimples. "Clearly someone that doesn't know her all that well~!" She parted her lips delicately at Sin's stiffness and Jason's whisper in his ear, rapidly evaluating her situation.
Calculatedly weaving words and mannerisms in her mind, she figured that the best thing to do would be to leave them be. Aneko was more socially adept than she seemed, and her mind moved at a mile a minute when she was focused. She placed a nail on her chin before turning back to them energetically. "You two.." She paused, swishing her hair behind her shoulder, "Are just the cutest! I'll leave you alone now..." She chirped, biting her lip and batting her eyelashes.
Without another word, she careened out of the open door, a slight wind ruffling her hair. She broke out onto the rooftop of the complex from a path she had seen Jiae navigate thousands of times, the wandering moon casting a cold gray haze over her silhouette. Cold rain patted a dull melody on her bare shoulders. She drummed her nails across her collarbone as she let her thoughts drift like the rolling clouds concealing the stars.

Time moved slowly and it made Hye-jin feel anxious as she sat on her stool, phone in hand as she read the group chat. She was mostly waiting for Ji-sung to message and say he was at her apartment, but once the younger had logged off, he stayed off. It was scary because she was worried that she was wasting time and letting her paint dry for no reason. Still, the drama that went on was enough to entertain her for a bit. She needed a distraction. Hye-jin licked her lips and began to type a message in the chat, mostly inquiring about the location of the tall male, but before she could send the message, there was a loud knock on her door. She jumped and stared into the dark area that was her apartment and began to run through a few scenarios. She just wanted to know what to say to him. "One second!" Her voice was somewhat meek, but she hoped that he had been able to hear it.

The woman used her phone as a flashlight and made her way through the apartment and to the front door. She took a deep breath and opened the door, eyes trained on the male's shoes. Hye-jin eventually looked up at him and smiled gratefully. "Thank you so much for coming over Jisung-ssi. I know it's probably the last thing you wanted to do but I appreciate it" She always spoke in a very gentle and well-mannered way, especially with people she wasn't comfortable or very familiar with. It helped her seem a lot more put together than she actually was. "You can come in if you want. I just need you to hold the light for a small amount of time if you don't mind"

It was weird, having someone in her apartment that is. Rarely did the artist invite anyone over as it was mostly her studio and a place that she didn't want people to see. It currently looked like she was moving in due to all the various paintings that she had packed up to move to the exhibit location. There were various sketchbooks scattered about and a few abandoned teacups here and there. Overall, it was neater than most artist studios. Her bedroom was incredibly organized and clean, as it was the place she was rarely in. Upon reaching the canvas, she took her place on the stool and waited for the younger to get comfortable and hold the light. Hye-jin was very grateful that she could finish the painting and allowed herself to focus on it. She painted as quickly as she dared, worrying flashing over her normally calm features every time she encountered paint that was too dry to blend, but that was okay.

She rarely worked with another person watching, but due to the awkwardness of their friendship, neither had much to say, so the experience was comfortable. Ji-sung was a lot like a cat so he made her a bit more comfortable, especially when things were quiet and calm between them. She was just glad that it was dark inside the apartment because she didn't want him to see how horrible she looked. Nobody really saw her when she was working so they were spared the gorey details of her grandmother like wardrobe and appearance in general. She pushed her round glasses up the bridge of her nose and leaned closer to the canvas, inspecting certain details of the sunset and the clouds she was currently fretting over.

The sleeves of the thick sweater were pushed up to her elbows, showing her pale and thin arms, and showing how large the sweater was overall. Her skirt was comfortable but wasn't really the most fashionable. It was warm and she thought it was cuter than her usual sweatpants. Still, she was a mess. Her appearance had been clearly neglected and while she still smelled like the usual rose and toasted sugar perfume, she needed to take a long bath and just relax. The ink of watercolors stained her fingertips, ruining the red nail polish she had put on a few days prior. Hye-jin leaned back and worried at her bottom lip, unsure if it actually looked decent. She didn't like her paintings and sold pretty much every single one at shows so that she didn't have to see them.

"Umm do you think it looks alright? I don't really know what to add or change and I did what I wanted to do but I'm worried it looks bad." A worried hand ran back through her hair, loosening the hairstyle in a very annoying way. But Hye-jin didn't care. She wanted to change the painting right then and there. The constant struggle of an artist who doubted their work. "I thought this was a good idea but I don't know anymore. This is supposed to be the centerpiece yet it's the worst" Pushing her glasses up, she pressed the palm of her hands against her eyes, a desperate attempt to come up with something that would make her feel more confident in it. "Do you think it's okay?"

chai tea
Chaisai slipped into the dark room, gently shutting the door behind himself. The familiar voice rang throughout the dark apartment, which planted a smile on the young male’s face. He seemed to have a lot to say, so he just the other’s voice ring out. The sound of his voice was soothing in the unsettling in the dark. Like when your mom runs into your room after a nightmare to softly talk you back to sleep.

“Mmm,” He hummed. “I’m sure she does. If she doesn’t, then you can just go outside. The rain will wash it out,” He joked as he sat down on a free space on the couch. “Just close your eyes if they burn so much. I’ll just lead you there.”

Unlike the other tenants, Sunan came from Thailand like Chai. Tea, the name was almost foreign on his lips. His whole life he had been referred to and addressed by the nickname. But, when Sunan said it, he felt all warm on the inside. Both coming from Thailand, they had no problems pronouncing each other’s names or speaking to each other in their native language. It all came quite easily. It was sweet.

“Firefighter?” He mused. “I think I’d crack as soon as I stepped into a burning building.” It was tempting to say some flirty remark about how he was already Sunan’s firefighter, but he bit his tongue. Sunan had a boyfriend, although he was that man was a terrible person, the other seemed so infatuated by him. But, that was the cycle wasn’t it? Date terrible people, blindly love them and then break up. He wondered if Sunan ever noticed how repetitive it was. He was waiting, no anticipating, the breakup between them.

He cleared his throat as he glanced towards the barely visible frame. “We should probably go soon before you go blind.” He stood up from his seat and pulled a few strands of hair out of his eyes. “If you put your hand on my shoulder, it’ll be like a train,” He joked. Although, he wished it wasn't a joke, but a sweet flirt instead.

The lack of power in the complex was quite the blessing, for him at least. While everyone was panicking for the lights to switch back on, he was praying they stayed shut off. He was worried his fuzzy, mushy inside feelings were showing through his tan skin as red, flushed cheeks. The dark masked it, keeping it hidden from any further embarrassment.

The moment the hands made contact with his back, he felt his shoulders unstiffen and drop. The sweet whispers hit his ears, for a moment, like honey. Although they were meant to be reassuring, they made him feel childish. He knew Jason didn’t mean to make him feel like that, those were probably the last of his intentions; pampered like always. When he first moved out, he told himself he would live independently, but it never seemed like that. He stayed silent, not knowing how to reply other than nodding.

He glanced back towards the female figure. The streetlights coming through the windows reflected off her, but it still wasn’t enough to be able to clearly see her features. She was intimidating from that view, and it didn't help that she was flirtatious. Just as quick as she came, she left the apartment. But before she left, she said something; her words confused him, and his eyebrows knitted together. Something about them felt passive-aggressive, or perhaps that was just his mind playing tricks.

“She left quick,” He acknowledged. In a sense, he was disappointed. He was amping himself up to actually begin a conversation or at least attempt. On the other hand, her departure was a sweet relief. His eyelids were weighing down over his dark eyes just thinking about being able to sleep. “Mmm, going to lay under the covers. It’s getting cold,” He muttered before crawling further into the bed and pulling the layers of blankets over his bare legs. The power outage was a reminder to wear pajama pants instead of boxers.

He pulled his phone in front of his face, curious to see the current state of the group chat during the blackout. Just as expected, everything had gone to shit. He let out a quiet chuckle, and his eyes turned into crescent moons as he read a few of the messages.

The blackout didn’t affect him in the slightest. Before moving in with Jason, he used to sleep in the pitch black. He preferred it over sleeping with the lights out, something about the dullness of dark and the lack of interruption. But he knew his roommate had a little fear of the dark, so he let it slide. Eventually, he set his phone aside and fell back against the pillow. “When do think the power will turn back on? I doubt the owner is even up right now.” He only made that assumption because the owner was a middle-aged man, who never had even the slightest imprint of bags under his eyes.

Aneko was already out the door before he figured out she was leaving. "Oh.. Bye?" He raised an eyebrow, waving to her before crashing onto the bed next to Sin, crawling under the blankets with him as he shivered in the cold. He made sure Sin had most of the blanket though, leaving his back bare to the cold, laying his head on the blanket beside his pillow.

When Sin smiled, the phone light letting Jason see him, he felt his insides melt. Sin was just so cute, everything he did made Jason happy, even if the male never seemed to understand any advance Jason made. "I don't think for the rest of the night." Jason sighed, he was going to spend the night doing all of his assignments but that was out the window now.

"I hope it's not out in the morning.. I need to do homework and then go to work and I'd rather be showered and clean before going." He subconsciously started to play with Sin's hair as he spoke.

"Then I need to get a few groceries.. Like.. Laundry Sauce." His eyes twinkled as he joked, thinking back to the earlier gc conversation where he was bullied over not knowing the word detergent.

"The rain? Wow, you're so nice. Honestly though, my eyes hurt enough that I think rain would make them feel way better" He shuffled over slightly when he felt the dip of the younger sitting down on the couch. He leaned closer to him, their shoulders pressing against each other's slightly. "You'll lead me? You got a lot more manly while I was away haha" Sunan laughed softly, his heart aching as he moved his hand to almost hold the teen's. He pulled away though, gripping his shorts instead. He didn't deserve that sort of contact or relationship.

He shook his head, running a hand back through his hair, thus noticing the headband. He quickly took it off and tossed it somewhere off to the side. Good thing he avoided that embarrassing situation. He hated how he looked when he was washing up for bed. "I'm sure you'd be good at anything you did. You're just one of those people" He wanted to compliment Chaisai further, but he didn't want to cross the boundary he had created the day they became friends. He didn't want to cross it because once he did, it would be too late.

Sunan bit his lip as Chaisai got up far too soon, making the model realize that they couldn't really have alone time together. There was no point. They were friends and usually, friends hung out with other friends during these situations. Yet the pink-haired boy wanted to selfishly enjoy solo time with Chaisai. "A train?" He mused with a small smile and extended a slender hand, touching the warm arm of the Thai youth. "Trains are kind of loud and I don't feel very safe on them" Standing up, he allowed his hand to trail lower and lower until he intertwined their fingers, confidently holding Chaisai's hand, despite his heart having long since passed out.

"I like this though, I feel way safer like this. I doubt that I can fall like this" Sunan didn't want to make it awkward so he tried to lighten the situation with a slight joke as he stood next to the shorter. He felt out of his element since he was always very careful with their skinship. Sure, he would cling to the male at school and be an annoying person, but that was socially acceptable. But holding his hand during a blackout instead of his shoulders? Yeah, that wasn't really a thing that friends did. Sunan cleared his throat and used his other hand to rest it on the teen's arm, just as an extra precaution so he didn't trip.

He was a bit worried about other's making comments about their situation, but at that moment, he didn't care. The teasing and slight pressuring the other tenants provided was annoying, but Sunan kind of liked it. He liked the fact that people thought they would be a good match and they were cute together. It made him feel happy since it couldn't actually happen. He had a boyfriend, one that he was currently in a fight with, yet he was totally in heaven from simply holding a guy's hand. It was unfair. He was such a manipulator.

His heart felt like it was melting and he was positive his hand was getting clammy from embarrassment and shyness, but he didn't want to let go. His pulse was pounding and his face was flushed bright red, but it was okay. Neither could see the flustered expressions or hear the beating of the other's heart. It was a case of one-sided loves on both sides. Yet the oldest of the pair refused to see it. He only saw his love and feelings slowly getting swallowed by the fake smile as he said they were only friends. He took his time with walking, not wanting to get to Kana's place too quickly. He wanted to be selfish, if only for a little while. At least this small amount of time would help him carry on with his facade.
