I've had an idea bouncing around in my head for a while now so here's a summary of it:
A girl's DNA was combined with a wolf's at birth in a twisted experiment to test a theory, leaving her with many animal like habits despite looking fully human. however when the doctor dies in a crash she is sent to live with his wife and daughter. She is often shunned by the woman who eventually leaves her in the care of her equally distant and (seemingly) uncaring adopted sister who she thinks hates her as well. This isn't the case but the older girl isn't big on hugging/kissing but shows affection through other ways (messing up the girl's hair, gentle teasing to try to get her to smile, etc.) the younger girl finally understands this when she comes home upset about bullies at school and her sister becomes concerned and tries to comfort her, much to the younger's surprise.
