"Don't ever venture beyond the bunker."
Those are the words that every child born this day in age hears on a daily basis.
Twenty years ago, or maybe longer, the world was thrown into disarray when the United States caused the biggest nuclear meltdown known to human history. Since then, the West half of the country has been completely eradicated, and radiation has spilled into the rest of the world. The next generation has been raised completely underground, having never seen the sun that the old generation knew of before.
Matt was one of these children. Often a defiant one, even from a young age, he still hadn't managed to break the golden rule; Don't venture beyond the bunker. Tonight, that was going to change. He waited until the authority figures, namely the community of parents in the bunker, went to sleep. He then ventured to his best friend's bed, nudging them awake.
"Come on, follow me." He whispered quietly to them, looking around to make sure no one else was still awake. "We've got to go check this out."
