Just as all members of the Alderghast Royal Family, Eyran is able to channel Aether to manipulate the weather, call forth storms, and summon lightning. While fairly powerful on his own, his magic is most efficient when he uses his sword, Tempest of Caitríona (pronounced Kah-threena), named after one of his ancestors who was a legendary druid queen during the Great Migration.
National Background
The people of the Crystallean Kingdom have gone through several relocations in their history, but none so profound as the Great Migration, when Celtic tribes banded together to flee Ireland when the Romans invaded the British Isles many centuries ago. While initially erecting settlements along the east coast of North Almaen (North America), confrontations with other refugees – primarily English and Nordic – drove them deeper inland.
After countless generations of nomadic lifestyles – and integrating native tribes of Almaen into their population – the ancestors of the Crystalleans eventually discovered a lush forested valley and erected a new settlement along the Ambya River. While it had a number of names in the Irish language, the increasing influence of English in the greater world led to the village being referred to as Sapphire Port for several centuries, until it grew big enough to be renamed Sapphire City.
Another major cause of English being promulgated as a world language was the growing regime in control of the British Empire. The Tudor Dynasty had for years been employing covert tactics against the Roman Empire, the Russian Empire, the Mongol-Sino Alliance, and the Arab-Indian Union – it’s primary rivals. These nations – known at the time as the Five Great World Powers – had to some extent grasped control over much of the planet.
The expanse of the World Powers was due mostly to the invention of the first crystal steam-powered airships at the hands of the Alchemists’ Guild, a branch of the University of Alexandria in Egypt. This was the single largest research establishment at the time, catering to the education of anyone who sought to learn, primarily noble families from the World Powers. For most of its existence, the University had remained independent and neutral in all matters of war as part of the Alexandrian Free State, but by the time the airship technology was widespread, the Roman Empire had seized control of Egypt.
After a number of skirmishes, the Brits eventually captured Alexandria for themselves, and developed new biological weapons to use in covert military operations. They also managed to tame a monster-infested area of Scandinavia that had been left alone by everyone for good reason, using special amulets to enthrall dragons and trolls and frost giants to do their bidding. This allowed the British Empire to shatter the other World Powers, as well as influence city-states and colonies in North Almaen, South Almaen, Afelta (Africa), Oustellia (Australia), and the scattered island chains of Matanesia (Polynesia/Oceania).
After several more centuries of war and shifting national borders, the large empires of the past had shattered into smaller countries, and Alexandria had returned to a Free State. Meanwhile, back in the Pacific Northwest area of North Almaen, Eyran’s ancestors had befriended a tribe of dragons local to that area, leading to the Sacred Embrace, when Elder Zordon of the Stone Dragons of Eltar and Chieftain Shea Teegan of Clan Alderghast joined their spirits and erected the Dragonspire upon Eden’s Hill in Sapphire City.
At the time of the Embrace, the Irish clans of North Almaen had lived in independent settlements and city-states inbetween periods of occupation by the World Powers of the past, but once the Dragonspire had been erected and the first Power Rangers were created, the entire Pacific Northwest gradually united with Sapphire City as it’s capital and Edenstone Palace was built around the Dragonspire on Eden’s Hill.
According to the current calendar used by Eyran’s people, the Sacred Embrace happened in 803AC (After Caitríona), and the Crystallean Unification happened in 874AC. The Old Realm Wars erupted between 896 and 1027AC as non-Irish forces from other parts of North Almaen tried to invade the Crystallean Kingdom’s new borders (Northern California, Northwestern Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Southern British Columbia), primarily in pursuit of the Dragonspire. The Power Ranger Brigades thwarted all of these attempts, and the Wars stopped after the Treaty of Fort Hondor in 1028.
At the time of the Treaty, North Almean was divided into six nations – the Crystallean Kingdom (borders already defined), the Aztec Tribal States (Southwestern United States, Mexico, Central America, and parts of Northwestern South America), Pimera Republica de Castro (Southeastern United States, Caribbean Islands, most of the parts of South America not under control of the Aztecs), the Great Sioux Nation (Midwestern United States, only native region to successfully defend against all invasions, strong allies with the Crystallean Kingdom), the Nordic Federal States (Northeastern United States, Southeastern Canada, descendants of Scandinavian refugees), and the Yukon-French Territories (the rest of Canada and Alaska, part of the larger French Commonwealth.)
In the centuries after the Treaty, the citizens of the Nordic Federal States began moving towards a dictatorship as one individual began consolidating power within the Council of Jarls – Lord Governor Worgen Arhimsson. Up until this point, each State was partially independent and appointed a single Jarl to represent each on the Council, while a Lord Governor was elected from past Jarls to lead them as a nation. Each Jarl had a strict five-year term, after which many would seek election to the position of Lord Governor.
Worgen had been a popular Jarl, and enjoyed enormous support during the election to appoint the next Lord Governor. But he had already been planting the seeds to form his dictatorship, through lies, deceit, blackmail, and anything else needed to gradually bring the entire Council under his thumb. After five years as a Jarl and another five as Lord Governor, his term of public service would have been complete, but by this time he had such a strong grip on the country that there was barely any opposition when he declared himself the permanent leader.
Over the following decade, he completely reorganized the nation into the Nordic Imperium, re-titled himself as Lord Imperator, named New Valhalla (New York City) as the capital, and began a massive campaign to conquer more land, with the ultimate goal of making another attempt to steal the Dragonspire.
The early years of the Imperium were marked by incredible conquests, primarily during the Nord-Castro War (1469-1474), where they stole all Castroan land in North Almaen, and the Nord-Aztec War (1474-1476), where they carved a path to the Pacific Ocean and set up a western headquarters in Nuatal Bay (San Francisco Bay), which was only a few miles south of the Crystallean border. Then, suddenly, the Imperium ceased hostilities, claimed they would retain the land they conquered but pledged no further invasions, and the other five nations begrudgingly signed the new Treaty of Raven Rock in 1476. This was also the year Eyran Alderghast was born.
Personal Background
Eyran was born early in 1476 to King Aldwin and Queen Saoirse, in a period of relative peace after the signing of the Treaty of Raven Rock. He grew up enjoying his youth with the children of other noble families, traveling to their summer mansions near the beach during the warm, sunny days. He grew a bit taller than the others, even beginning to sport facial hair at only fifteen. His beard was short-lived, however, as his mother demanded he shave it off until he was older.
While he could never be a Power Ranger, he did devote himself to his magical studies, and even spent six months abroad as a student at the University of Alexandria when he was seventeen. He originally was intended to spend a full year there, but was ushered back home when he received word that his mother had fallen ill.
Only a few days after his return, she passed away, the cause of illness and death discovered to be a strange new poison. King Aldwin and Ranger Commander Clare Daugherty both suspected imperial motives, but couldn’t help but wonder why the Imperium would suddenly renew hostilities after seventeen years of peace.
In the weeks that followed, more nobles were poisoned, and soon the king was dead as well, leaving Eyran as the sole heir to House Alderghast. It was then – August of 1493 – that the Nordic Imperium openly violated the Treaty of Raven Rock and their armies marched north. Soon Eyran found himself standing outside Edenstone Palace with his friends, watching as General Mavston Hurk and his First Imperial Legion breached the walls of Sapphire City.
Soon the battle would unfold into the Royal Courtyard, the Dragonspire would explode, and Eyran, Commander Daugherty, and the Commander’s granddaughter would fall through a rift, finding themselves in a strange new world without magic. This new place seemed very similar to home, and the calendar was even similar – the names of the months were the same, but the years were different – it was 1493 After Caitríona back home, but 2019 Anno Domini in this other world. It seemed the Irish still inhabited their homeland as well, whereas in his world, Ireland was left a blighted wasteland after the Roman invasions.
There were many differences in this new world, but also many similarities. New friends, but also new enemies – and old. There was a lack of native magic in the Aether flow, but incredible sciences and technologies that had developed in its stead. Eyran was thoroughly excited at the prospect of all he would learn in his new home...
