Oh no, don't worry I'm sure people use both words on here, it's just that the word alert is more common.

Yes, if you edit a post to include an alert to someone, would it show up in their alerts?

I believe it doesn't show up in their alerts, so I would advise you to repost the post again.

Just going to add that I'm quite sure it won't show up as an alert if it's simply edited in.

Yeah. Tagging someone (such as @Sunkissed ) will not alert them if it's just edited in. A new post needs to be made.
