OOC Chat

Alrighty I believe that's everyone who wanted to be in from the start so the question now is do you guys want to kick off the plot or would you like to play around with your characters a bit more first? I'm keen to jump into it myself but I also like seeing where these characters are going so there's no rush. There'll also be plenty of opportunities to do more slice of life-y type stuff down the track.

So far, these characters don't have much of a reason to interact with each other. Unless they recognized one another from the dream or something, I don't see why they'd purposely come together. That said, I think transitioning into the plot would be a better choice for now. Once they know each other better (or know each other at all) through plot happenings, trying out a bit of slice of life would make more sense.

Oh sure, I was more thinking people might want to develop their individual stories more rather than meeting up which would, as you pointed out, be a bit contrived at this point.

Ah, I see what you mean. It's a valid reason to want to continue on in the vein the RP is in at the moment. I don't particularly have a preference between them, so I'll see what everyone else wants to do.

Cool, now this next point is kind of embarrassing cause I only just remembered it, but you guys are going to have to give some thought to what you character's dungeons, that is the "new worlds" you're about to be sucked into look like. We'll need at least one of these to be fleshed out so that we can actually explore it, which I'd like to do via PM with whoever wants to go first, eventually we'll do the same thing with everyone's dungeon though.

<p>

Ah, I'd forgotten that point too. As I'm starting Azumi's dungeon, I have a few questions relating to how far into this process we can go. I'm sure I'll come up with more as I take time to properly flesh it out, but for now...

<ul><li>Boss designs. Are these up to our discretion? </li>

<li>Enemy designs. Typically in Persona, regular spawn enemies carry over from one dungeon to the next, regardless of theme. Should we design all/some/none of the enemies in our dungeons? </li>

<li>Definition of a dungeon. In P4, dungeons were all closed-off facilities (eg: Kanji's bathhouse, Naoto's lab, Rise's...stripclub I think?). All very regular buildings. Can we take some liberties with a dungeon beyond this? Such as incorporating outdoor areas? Can we have a single floor that's longer, rather than multiple levels? Etc. Etc. </li>

We should definitely get the plot started. Honestly, it will probably give us more to work off of in the long run.

Of course, what exactly would be involved in getting things started? Do we do someone's dungeon from the get go, or do we do some kind of orienteering course for would be Persona characters?

all great questions.

1. Yup, you can design your own boss certainly, there is a rule concerning them that I'll share with whoever goes first and keep from everyone else until they see it ICly just cause I think it'll be fun so you may wish to hold off on that aspect unless you want to go first.

I can even maybe, and this is a big maybe because I don't really think my skills are up to capturing people's visions, draw personas and bosses for people if they want, I can link to some of my work so far and people can decide if they want to do that for themselves.

2. If you want to, what we might do is have a "bestiary" of standard shadows and have miniboss or squad leader shadows that are more thematic. I'd certainly encourage people to come up with these enemies if they want to but I won't stress it, I can do them myself pretty easily since they wont be that important.

3. Since the dungeons can be thought of as "a new, ideal world" I think it's perfectly fine for them to be more expansive, and include a variety of areas.

4. Ah yes I will dig up the Persona app I made and go into that stuff in a bit more detail.

Your characters will all sit through a brief, instructional video on safe and responsible persona use guest starring Adam Baldwin.

For real though I'm planning to jump us straight into a dungeon. On that note:

Is anybody keen to have their dungeon be explored first? It'd be nice to work out on order now.

As far as the boss, I'm really just designing the physical feel of it (<span style="text-decoration:line-through;">and the amount of edge per square inch. hint:too much</span>) for right now. Nothing as far as mechanics yet. I'll keep that in mind. I think smaller 'squad leader' or whathaveyou shadows for each dungeon could be interesting. More work, of course, but hey, these ones aren't as serious of an undertaking.

Personally, I've barely skimmed the surface of this dungeon design, much less its mechanical quirks, and I've already realized I'm going to need a lot of time to work it out. I'd prefer not to have to rush it and go first. Ehe.

Sure! Keep in mind that once you're turn comes around I'll hash the details out with you, so you don't have to have it be perfect or completely nailed down in advance. Also everyone, feel free to PM me if you'd like to discuss your dungeons in any way.

Here are some general guidelines or kind of a checklist for everyone thinking about their dungeons.

1. The theme, as you've probably gathered, is an escape form the world, your dungeon should be a world that doesn't have whatever problem your character doesn't wanna face and while it might be creepy and unnerving it should also be somehow alluring, at least to that character. As the team ventures deeper into that dungeon and closer to the exit that fear will start to become a theme in the dungeon, subtly at first then more overtly, almost as if the dungeon itself is trying to convince it's victim to stay in the earlier, safer areas. In order to exit the dungeon that fear will have to be confronted head on.

2. That's another point, the exit of the dungeon's will be at the end of them, in order to return to the real world one must confront whatever it was that scared them out of it in the first place. The only way out is through, so to speak. This won't apply during NPC rescues, since those dungeons were designed to trap the NPC's and the players won't be entering under the dungeon's terms so to speak.

3. The boss, which will be guarding the exit, should symbolise this fear or issue as well as sharing characteristics with the eventual persona of the victim.

4. Dungeons don't have to be straight combat, if you'd like to incorporate some kind of puzzle or other alternate challenge we can probably work something out.

5. You may wish to consider some flashbacks or memories from your character's past to incorporate into your dungeon.

6. As mentioned above, you might like to come up with some unique shadows to use as mini bosses, this is optional though.

7. Just let me know if you have questions or are otherwise unsure about something.

Unrelated, here is the persona app, well sort of. This is what you'll initially be able see of your persona, after your character's dungeon has been completed they'll have access to their true persona so I'll initially restrict that part of the app to whoever goes first

Code:
[divide][/divide]
[b]silhouette:[/b] (All that will be visible and known of your persona at first will be a vague, holographic silhouette that represents a fraction of it's true power. No pictures here (although it might be a good idea to find one for later) describe it in broad terms.)

[b]elemental affinity:[/b] Your persona will have an affinity with one or two elements, it will resist damage from that element and will be able to use offensive spells from it while being vulnerable to attacks from the opposite element. You may choose two affinities but the trade off is having two weaknesses and your persona's proficiency with elemental attacks won't develop quite as quickly. The available elements are: Light, Dark, Fire, Wind, Ice, Lightning.)

[b]Role:[/b] Persona's can be broadly categorised into the kind of role their stats and abilities allow them to excel at, examples include physical or magical attackers, defensive specialists, support or offensive supports who debuff enemies. Roles are not incredibly rigid, a persona may specialise in one area while also performing competently in one or two others, or even be an all rounder with no real deficiencies (And no real outstanding strengths) Focusing on one area will result in greater mastery of that area while generalists trade raw strength for flexibility and utility.

More of this Character sheet will become available after certain events unfold...

NOTE: Like the character's of P4, your characters will eventually obtain a more powerful "ultimate" form of their personas after completing some kind of personal arc. This will be quite a bit down the track so you don't need to consider it much right now but when you decide what figures to draw symbology from it might be worth making sure you don't use the most prominent or mostpowerful so that when that persona evolves you kind of have somewhere to go with it.

Okay so I stumbled upon a great tumblr, an artist doing hypothetical shadows and personas for character from 3 and 4 that don't have them canonically

Apart from being damn cool in their own right and excellently drawn, they're a pretty good source of inspiration if your wondering about where to take the designs of your own personas and bosses. The right ups below detailing the mythology and such that inspired them is also very interesting. So I just thought I'd share that with you guys, you might have seen it already, I'm not really a tumblr person so it's the first time I've seen it.

Persona Shadows

Ah so a note on personas, which I will edit the app to include a reference to. Like the character's of P4, your characters will eventually obtain a more powerful "ultimate" form of their personas after completing some kind of personal arc. This will be quite a bit down the track so you don't need to consider it much right now but when you decide what figures to draw symbology from it might be worth making sure you don't use the most prominent or most powerful so that when that persona evolves you kind of have somewhere to go with it.

Just something to keep in mind.

Update: I think @Tarquin and me have pretty good idea of how this first dungeon is going pan out, I still have a fair bit of prep work to do but I'm confident I can kick things off sometime today or tonight.

So now would probably be a good time to lay out some expectations just so everyone is one the same page. I think most of this stuff will have been mentioned somewhere but it'll be nice to have it all in one place.

1. It'd be great if everyone could get that preliminary persona app a few posts up completed. It doesn't necessarily have to be done before we start but this first dungeon won't be very long and you will be getting your personas at some point in there. Or your silhouettes at least, to use my own terminology. If you're having trouble coming up wit ha persona or settling one idea then you have a few options.

a) You can send me PM and we can bounce around a couple of ideas, I'll do my best to respond as quickly as possible to these.

b) If you don't mind revealing your persona before it's "moment" You can just post here in the thread or in the private chat and get everyone's feedback or suggestions, this is probably your best option, judging off what I've seen so far we have a lot of smart people here.

c) trawl through the mythology section of wikipedia. If you're anything like me you risk losing an entire afternoon to this kind of thing so be careful.

2. There have been some questions about combat, this is pretty much going to be a free form rp, I'm not going to be rolling any dice or implementing any stats. There will be a character introduced pretty soon who will be able to tell you guys how strong a particular enemy is or if there are unusual conditions to the fight, use that stuff and your knowledge of your character's personality and strengths to decide what a good response would be. For important fights, I'll respond to determine how effective a particular attack was but against weaker opponents you'll be free to dispose of them in your posts. Of course for this first dungeon there won't really be any much weaker opponents since you'll basically be starting out but later on you guys iwll have more freedom in that regard.

3. If you have any other questions, thoughts, suggestions concerns etc. Now would be a great time to bring them up, otherwise stay tuned for that IC post!

I am. So. Sorry. Work has just been a little hectic lately and I've had so little energy for other stuff. Anyway things are a lot more settled now and I'll be much better about keeping you guys in the loop on future delays.

In brighter news the plot has now materialised, everyone's characters have been whisked away to shadownet! You will have woken up in your dungeon so if you don't have a good idea of what that looks like yet than keep any descriptions of that space vague, if you do have some ideas you can think of this as a chance to give us all a little preview. Or not, up to you. Otherwise I'll be moving you all to the same location fairly soon and getting on with the adventure!

Nah man, you're good. At least you put up a post rather than just stop. I've had an idea cooking for a while, so I'm glad to give a taste.

(Also I'm down with discussing being the next dungeon dude.)

Great, we can probably just go with first come first served unless someone else is super keen in which case I'm happy to hash it out.

Sorry I haven't posted yet; there was something unexpected that didn't let me get to a computer for a while. I'll reply today.

Boy this new formatting is... It's gonna be a while before the info thread doesn't look like garbage and everyone's apps got all messed up to. You may wish to clean those up at your leisure, feel free to post them in new threads in the character section which we can do I guess, or you can just edit the original posts.

Edited Azumi's profile back to something that doesn't look entirely like garbage.

Ugh right?! I can't get my lore pages looking anything more than functional, I really felt like I'd nailed the tacky tourist brochure vibe for the Sunrise Heights one as well.

Anyway I got a post up, I apologise if it feels rushed, I did quite a bit of travelling today but I also  really wanted to get something up today, strike while the iron is hot and all that. So this post has properly introduced ADAM! A character that I've sort of been picturing since I came up with the idea for this RP. He's basically gonna be your Teddie and is mostly reliable, if a little easily excited.
