"Hold on tight, Ritsu!" Shifting his grip on the small mascot one more, Moura twisted his body. Now, Moura didn't have much battle experience in comparison to his fellow crusaders. He didn't escalate fights into brawls either, even if he wanted to inverted someone's nose into their face. Doing that would stress his mother and as a good son who saw her hardships, Moura didn't want to put more on her plate. So, what happened next surprised him.

Letting out a cry, Moura's foot shined as it spun around and slammed itself into a yokai. The force of the blow sent it flying into its allies and in some of sort of domino effect caused them all to fall on top of each other. "Strike!" Now, Moura was really feeling it now. Not letting even a second for it to pass, jumped into the moshpit of yokai.

Opening the palm of his hand, light manifested in spheres. The process felt odd, as if something was being taken out of him, but Moura chalked it up to whatever magic stuff Ritsu was talking about earlier. The spheres immediately directly into the yokai's eyes and burst into bright flashes when coming into contact. The attack itself did little to the yokai, but it did blinded him for Moura to-

"RITSU MISSILE!" Throw the mascot right into one of the Yokai's face while he dashed right into one of them. Tightening his fist, Moura lower himself before uppercutting the yokai that Ritsu had 'hit'. There were many more to go through, but punching them into the ground was good enough.

"Got it, got it, got it!" Moura shouted over to Ken. Now suffice to say, Moura wasn't completely confident if his fists could hurt such a big creature. If he would have made an estimate it approxiatemly three times his size and ten times his weight. But that wouldn't stop him. "Eat this!" Opening his palm once more, light spheres shot forth from his palm. Coming straight for the elephant's eyes, Moura was hoping disorient it.

Just so he could this. "Here we go!" With a running start, Moura jumped into the air. He had seen it once with Ken and Daichi before he was a crusader, but it seemed like a pwoerful move. Stretching out his leg, Moura jump kicked the elephant on its side.

Yes! She saw the net thrown out by her cousin and knew they would manage this. With Suzume charging in against some unknown figure she had a wide area she needed to keep track of and like eleven people in the way of her view.

She wasn’t alone though and she needed to keep that in mind. Something easy to do when she heard the clang of the shovel come down. Tetsuya could always be relied on but it was her job to get them still for him in the first place.

“Yeah! I’m good. Don’t tire yourself out too fast okay, I’ll secure them and you can come clean up okay!”

She flicked her wrist with all the grace and practice of a long time pitcher as she aimed to nail one of them into the ground with the dart at the length of her chain.

“EAT DIRT YOKAI!!!! SUZU, YUU, TETSU, MARIMARI LET SWARM THEM!”

OPENING NIGHT
Her shadows were limited in their range, and her hands cramped under the continued struggle of Yokai in her webbing, but the quick acting of her comrades gave her strength.

Kemari’s thinking had proved useful and that gave her confidence. But what more could she do? To answer that, she had to get creative. Up until now, Kemari hadn’t conceptualized any offensive or aggressive maneuvers with her abilities. But in the face of this danger with the reality of her friends’ lives on the line bearing down on her, she could think of a few. Execution was the only remaining issue… Then again, was now the appropriate time for experiments?

Surely there was more to her shadows than simple threadwork.

Kemari chewed it over with uncertainty and ultimately decided against it. She had ideas now—inspiration for growth—but this was not the training field, and the Yokai were not dummies. This was real. And speaking of reality, she could no longer bear the strain on her hands and found herself withdrawing her shadows, thus releasing the bound Yokai.

“Kemari is sorry,” she whispered, regretful that she could not hold them further.

The crack of thunder allowed no time for dwelling—a firm reminder that the battle was still ongoing and paused for no one, no matter their incapacities. Kemari let her eyes scan the field once more. Maura and Ken were focusing one of the three largest Yokai. Nanami hung back, inquiring about a plan. Suzume’s attention was fixed on the lone, masked figure above. And Masao and Tetsuya were wiping out the smallfry that skittered about like marbles on wood flooring.

“EAT DIRT YOKAI!!!!” Masao yelled. “SUZU, YUU, TETSU, MARIMARI LET’S SWARM THEM!”

Kemari nodded and steeled herself—bottling up the fear inside.

She rushed forward alongside Tetsuya and urged him in passing, “Assist,” to direct his attention toward an oncoming Yokai. Then she hit the wet ground in a slide, gliding beneath the airborne beast with its sights narrowed on Tetsuya. With one hand, she cast a shadow around its throat from below before using both to snag the beast to the ground as she twisted and got up to a knee in fluid motion. It took all of her might to yank it down, but it met the pavement hard, and Kemari awaited Tetsuya’s final blow.

“Kemari cannot yet kill.” She was not equipped to do so.

Opening Night

Like a bubble, that protective coat of childish rapport popped before the serrated voice from above.

”The path you tread…”

Calm assurance, punctuated by thunder.

”…leads only to ruin.”

Yuuka paused, her confidence fading from her eyes before her smile. Light slipped away, and only the shade of a wilted wisteria remained. Within the memory of a moment, a viscous, deep-seeded dread pooled within. The fear—rather, premonition—of something gone terribly wrong. Beyond the present, seeping its ruin into her past and spilling over her future.

She snapped her head to the now opened warehouse doors.

“...AHHHHHH!”

As Masao called the group to action, Yuuka started sprinting. Only, it was in the other direction.

OH MY GOD. I’M GONNA DIE. WHAT ARE THOSE THINGS!? I’VE GOTTA GET OUTTA HERE!!

Half way into her sprint, Yuuka dug her heels in the mud and forced herself into a 180º turn.

“NO! I’ve gotta be brave!” She shouted in defiance of her nature. “Gotta be brave for Ken! Gotta be brave for Masao and Kemari! Gottabebravegottabebravegottabebrave—!”

In the fit of her passion, Yuuka tripped over a dog-shaped yokai—launching herself into the muddied ground. She did a single somersault before landing on her bottom. She snapped her head to the thing she tripped over, only to realize her mistake too late.

The yokai had been ensnared in one of Kemari’s shadow-esque webs. But they had slipped away, and barely ten seconds had passed. The yokai wouldn’t forget such a transgression, especially during its moment of weakness.

Yuuka scooted herself back as the beast prowled towards her. As she made less and less distance through the thick mud, her mind raced faster for a solution.

And then it clicked. She looked down at her hands, where her pastel pink gun still laid.

OF COURSE! I’ve got this!

But as she looked at the yokai through the scope, she lowered the weapon ever-so-slightly. She was within her rights to hesitate! Who wouldn’t feel bad about shooting a dog?

The yokai bared its teeth, its fangs preparing to sink into her flesh. The low growl turned to a sharp, frightening bark within seconds. Having spotted her hesitation, hunger flashed in its eyes.

Like an instinct, Yuuka raised the gun again and shot—right as the yokai attempted to pounce.

Where she would have felt deep regret, she instead felt confusion. Because instead of a loud boom, a small click went off. And now the yokai sat down with a spinning head, all because of the carmine red dart sticking above its eyebrow.

It shook its head wildly before wagging its tail on the ground, and panting happily. Its eyes, once smoking alien pools of perception, were but tiny dots. It trotted over to Yuuka’s side before gently nudging her arm with its nose.

It was acting like… a normal dog.

“...HUH.”

OPENING NIGHT
"Ah..." Tetsuya said in acknowledgement to Kemari. A foe was enwebbed at his feet, and all he had to do was finish it off. But Tetsuya's hand hesitated. While with the other yokais Tetsuya could bring himself to kill them since it was an eat-or-be-eaten situation, there was nothing of the sort with this yokai. He'd be killing an innocent being. But Tetsuya could also see how much effort Kemari was putting into holding the yokai down. He couldn't just let Kemari to continue struggling.

Tetsuya raised his shovel and slammed it flat-side down on the yokai's head. The blow caused the yokai to slow its struggles, but not outright kill it. Hissing in frustration, Tetsuya raised his shovel once again, this time using the sharp side to cut off the yokai's head. Immediately, Tetsuya turned away and focused his attention to the other attacking yokais, not wanting to look at his handiwork. Offhandedly, Tetsuya commented, "Myah, Kemari, perhaps I'll teach you how to use a shovel~"

Despite the confidence and flair that Tetsuya said those words with, Tetsuya was doing his best to hide the fact that he was quite out of breath, as if to gaslight himself into thinking he wasn't tired. It wasn't in his style to exert himself so aggressively. It felt awful, the sweat running down his back, the way that his lungs burned, the way that the muscles in his arms protested with every swing. But unfortunately, as Tetsuya took a moment to look at his friends all fighting, he realized that the enemies weren't going to loosen up anytime soon.

"This is a fantastic introductory mission," Tetsuya said to Ritsu, the sarcasm dripping with every nyah-ful word, "I better get some catnip as a reward afterward."

CURTAIN CALL
Like a flickering flame, the masked adversary appeared once more in their midst. His eyes burned with hidden rage. Twin souls bound to solitary flesh. The force of his intensity radiated off of him in waves. All around him, Crusaders battled Yokai. Their light illuminating the darkness. The darkness could not snuff it out on its own.

And yet, that same darkness was deepening. It pooled at his feet. It writhed behind the thin veil that separated this world from the world beyond. Alert. Awake.

Their eyes were on him, now. It was time for the Final Act.

"Your efforts are meaningless. He is coming. You're all going to burn."

He raised his hand. A whirlpool of shadows blinked into existence in the sky above them.

The door cracked open. It was mere inches. More work to be done. But to erase these feeble guardians... It was more than enough.

From the sky, thunder cracked. An arc of lightning illuminated above them the gargantuan silhouette of something lording above them. It rose like a pyramid piercing the heavens. Three peaks. A crown of horns. The shadow of massive wings. The impression of a god.

The masked man stared up at the formulating darkness in awe. Eyes widening. He realized he was laughing. The sound of a roar drowned out all sound. All thought. The clock struck midnight.

As the hammer stroke fell, to obliterate all, motes of warm, inviting light twinkled into view around the gathered guardians. One by one, they blinked out of existence just in time, as the wave of destruction rolled over everything in its path, consuming all.

The curtain fell.

THE ATRIUM
You awaken in a place that is not a place.

Before you stretches a grand foyer of such elegance, the likes of which you have seldom seen in your life. A monumental staircase, twin and symmetrical, rises like the spread wings of a marble swan from the polished floor, cresting gently towards the upper levels before disappearing out of sight.

Light, like from the sun, filters down through an oculus of stained glass—a kaleidoscopic eye through which you spy glimpses of the impression of a world beyond—casting a mosaic of light upon the meticulously tiled and intricate surface below.

Tall, rectangular columns stand sentinel, flanking you on either side, supporting lofty arches adorned with acanthus leaves. Potted greenery dots the space. From somewhere further within, a lilting tune is softly playing.

You have never been here before, yet to walk here is familiar. Comforting. Like coming home.

Suddenly, you remember. Where you were, before you were here. Before a halo of light spirited you away. To this place. What is this place?

This is the gathering room

A voice answers. It speaks inside your mind.

You are presented with an understanding. This place once housed your forebears, whoever they were. It has laid empty for some time. It is yours, now. A safe haven against the dark.

Suddenly, you realize you are not alone.

Then you wake up.
