seven is always watching. she observes, listens but rarely speaks, and does not interact with the other kids; the only time she does is when it is absolutely necessary. when not with the scientists, seven chooses to remain alone with only the company of her beloved pink plush rabbit, bunny. being so isolated does get lonely at times, but she has learned to deal with that by simply bottling it up and ignoring it, much like she does with every other strong emotion she feels.

milena cherise duval, daughter of elena and maurice duval, was left at a hospital four years after she was born with nothing but a pink plush rabbit and a note clipped to her shirt that read "her name is milena. take care of her, we can't anymore. there's something wrong with her". the nurses weren't sure what to do with her, so for hours, she sat in the waiting area until a doctor arrived and claimed her. this wasn't any doctor milena had met before, in fact, she had never seen this man in her life. he told her that he knew who she was and had a special place to take her, promising she would get to see her parents again. that was a lie.

milena was taken to a lab, needing to be sedated on the way there due to... complications, and from then on was addressed only as 'number seven'. she spent the next 10 years in the lab surrounded by kids with strange abilities like herself (truthfully, milena hadn't even been aware she had special abilities, believing she was just heavily dissociating any time she seemed to disconnect from her physical body).

in the lab she followed a strict schedule... or, she was supposed to. milena proved to be one of the most challenging children to work with, often unintentionally causing disruptions and other problems. for the first few years at the lab, she had rather frequent meltdowns; whether it be because of overstimulation or they had just pushed her too far, the result was her receiving punishments every single time. they thought milena was just taking longer to adjust, but her behaviour only seemed to worsen over time. many scientists were concerned about keeping someone as volatile as milena despite the abilities she had. they decided to monitor her further in hopes of figuring out any way to keep her calm long enough to run the tests they needed to.

after a particularly rough day of testing, milena had to be sedated in order to calm her down. the doctor who initially brought her into the lab had been overseeing the tests that day, and the outcome was not what he had hoped for. he didn't know how to make her cooperate or at the very least stay calm long enough for them to complete a full set of tests. he took milena back to her room and, upon arrival, noticed a distinct lack of a pink plush rabbit in her room. he had noticed how aggressively protective she had been of the plushie when they first met, and felt compelled to test something. he had, for whatever reason, kept the plushie that had been taken from her on arrival, and decided to use it during testing the next day.

as the doctor expected, milena made testing difficult for them yet again, but instead of trying to push her any harder, he showed her the rabbit- "if you are good, you get to have the rabbit." that was all he said as he stepped away, watching as she stopped moving almost immediately, eyes trained on the plushie. from that point on they used the plush rabbit as a way of controlling her and although it took time, they were eventually able to condition her so that any time she felt like she was going to have a meltdown or get upset, she would force herself to bottle those feelings. by the time milena was 8 years old, they no longer needed to use the rabbit during testing and gave it to her to have during all hours, even allowing her to hold onto it during tests. outside of testing, she was still having trouble adjusting to everything, but they dealt with her if ever it got out of hand (punishments and sedatives worked wonders).

even after a decade at the lab, milena never truly got comfortable with being there, but she has learned how to behave the way they want her to. she knows how to be good. despite being good for them, as an extra precaution, the scientists keep miles slightly drugged up in order to keep her calm outside of testing.

a couple of years ago, seraphina would have been described as a rather energetic character; kind, charismatic and excitable, she was always looking to connect with others and was a good friend to them. now, she is more often described as a freak, disgusting, and someone to avoid; all of this due to being outed as a lesbian when she was 15, sera has become something of a social pariah. from then on, seraphina saw no point in hiding her true personality to keep up appearances for the public in order to please her father.

sera is a dickhead; she's sarcastic, rude, and doesn't care much for other people or their feelings if she doesn't know them. being shunned and harassed by just about everyone for over a year now has made her bitter and she has very little patience to deal with anyone. seraphina has enough to worry about as it is, what with living on her own, working almost every day, and keeping up with school; she doesn't have time to deal with assholes that can't get over the fact she prefers to kiss women.

seraphina mae langley was born in paris, france. her parents, manon and alexander langley, moved them to hawkins when seraphina was 2 years old. she had a pretty normal life growing up, save for the disaster that was her family. alexander was abusive and ran the household; he brought in the most money as a politician, so manon never left him. aside from seraphina, manon also had three sons to take care of, triplets (jackson, everett, and benjamin) who were born a year before seraphina. leaving alexander would be the worst option for all of them. manon decided that having to deal with alexander's abuse was better than being in a low-income family.

seraphina was a weird kid growing up. despite being from a family that was made of money, she never acted like she was a child that came from wealth. she dissected dolls for fun, took everything apart to see how it functioned, collected dead bugs, and liked girls a little more than she probably should have. the way sera dressed, in baggy clothes that she begged her mother to get for her (all picked from the boy's section), she stuck out like a sore thumb when she stood alongside her family. despite manon's best efforts to make their daughter appear normal, there was only so much she could do; she was able to get her to stop dissecting things, collecting dead bugs, and forced her to wear nicer clothes, but there wasn't much she could do in regards to her liking girls a little more than she should.

life continued, alexander was still a terrible father and manon did nothing to stop him, their kids were worked to the bone as they desperately tried to keep their father happy to avoid his wrath, and sera kept causing problems. by the time sera was 12, her parents could tell something was still off about her, seeing how she fawned over one of her friends- a girl named tiffany, someone she had been playmates with since they were young. manon insisted it was nothing, worried alexander would do something drastic, and she was right to be worried. eventually, alexander caught onto the way sera acted with tiffany; for a while he tried not to think anything of it, the last thing he wanted to believe was that his only daughter was a homosexual. one day, however, he almost caught tiffany and seraphina kissing. the two had barely separated in time, but alexander could tell something had happened and he had a hunch it wasn't good. he didn't need any more reason than that, so without saying a word to manon or anyone else, he sent seraphina away a week later. alexander made the excuse that she had to go out of state because she was sick and desperately needed treatment, that this was the only way.

she didn't come home until a couple of months after her 13th birthday; things went back to normal, seraphina went about her life as if she hadn't been gone for 6 months, and no one spoke a word about what happened. manon stayed quiet about it and acted as if sera had never left, her brothers tried to talk about it but were silenced every time, and seraphina pretended like those 6 months had never happened. from the day she got back and over the next two years, she caught up with tiffany and found a wonderful new group of friends. they were kind and genuinely seemed to care about seraphina; she was finally starting to act like a normal girl.

on her 15th birthday, seraphina invited all of her friends over for a birthday party. everything was going well up until the end of the party. parents were arriving, gathering around the refreshments table, waiting for the kids to finish whatever little game they were playing. the final game of the night was supposed to be a friendly game of truth or dare, nothing serious- purely meant for laughs, maybe a couple of embarrassing stories, but unfortunately it took a turn when seraphina was asked truth or dare by one of her close friends, fiona.

sera chose truth, expecting her friend to ask a silly question or something that would have her reveal a dumb secret; what she hadn't expected was for fiona to ask, "is it true you're gay?". seraphina had been shocked into silence, mouth dropping open, and when she didn't respond fiona continued, "fine, if you won't answer... i dare you to tell us the truth. tell everyone how you told me you want to kiss a girl, that you said kissing boys is gross". there was no salvaging the situation as fiona began to laugh and shove sera, calling her disgusting, and unnatural, she repeated it loud enough for everyone to hear. fiona hadn't been looking to cause drama just within the friend group, she was trying to destroy seraphina's life, and it worked.

the person seraphina had trusted with this secret, the one who promised she would never say anything, had betrayed her. not even a couple of days had passed before sera was officially labeled a complete outcast. she became a target of hate and harassment, and two weeks after the incident her family disowned her. alexander kicked her out of the house so suddenly that she barely had enough time to gather all of her things. manon did absolutely nothing to stop this, she simply watched as her daughter was thrown out without batting an eye. her brothers, however, did everything they could to help her. they waited until both of their parents were out of the house and snuck seraphina inside. they helped her gather everything she could (including her cat, bonbon), and loaded it into the van the four of them had been working on renovating for the past year. they helped her sneak into the house often to restock on supplies, get something to eat, etc, but were eventually found out and all ties were cut. she was completely alone.

since then, seraphina has lived out of her van. her parents have completely written her out of their lives and her brothers have been forbidden from speaking or being seen with her. the four of them meet every couple of weeks so they can bring her more cat food and other things to take care of bonbon, money for vet bills, and the like. once that delivery is made, seraphina and her brothers go back to pretending they don't know or care about each other.

The Porter family moved from Indianapolis to Hawkins when Ashley was only five years old, much to the tiny Ashley's chagrin. But her mother, Christina, thought Hawkins was a much nicer (and safer) place to raise a family than the big city. Anthony Porter, of course, had to find a new job in town. A videographer by trade, he found work at the local news station. In his free time, he showed Ashley how to work a camera, and introduced her to the wonderful world of film and theater. She took to it like a duck to water, gleefully enjoying obscure art house films her dad had somehow got his hands on, even though nowhere else in town had these kinds of tapes. He would take her to see traveling broadway productions in Indianapolis, whenever they managed to scrounge up enough cash, or to the local film festival.

Though Ashley remembers time with her father fondly, her mother did not see it quite the same way. While little Ashley was sat alone in a movie theater watching something she was certainly far too young to see, with an empty seat beside her, her father was making deals in back alleys. He had a habit of gambling, conning, and odd-jobbing his way through life. It wasn't something Christina appreciated. The Porter home, located on the wrong side of the tracks at the edge of Hawkins, was always filled with argument by the time the sun set. Though he was always running off to the city for god knows what, Anthony even found his way to scum around in Hawkins, mainly by selling drugs to whatever desperate teenager was willing to be a dealer.

Ashley found herself enraptured in theater and film, even in school. She quickly became close friends with her neighbor Charlie, often escaping her own fraught home for his. The two became nearly inseparable. It was around this time in middle school that Anthony Porter's luck finally ran out. After a drunken brawl in some casino in Indianapolis, Ashley's father was sentenced to 10 years in prison. It left the remaining Porter family devastated. With her mother now always at work to keep them living, Ashley found herself spending even more time away from home. She drowned herself in drama and film club, and making perfect grades. Then her one lifeline, Charlie, left too.

Going into high school, Ashley was left a friendless geek primarily known in town for her family's terrible reputation, thanks to her dad. She was mocked with people assuming that after her father's sentencing, her mother's rumored "affairs", and her best friend in juvie, Ashley must also be destined for a terrible, embarrassing failure of a life. So she completely remade herself. Gone was the lack of fashion sense, the interest in nerdy shit like obscure movies or drama club, or the tears in the school bathroom. Ashley set her mind on becoming popular. After a short stint on the JV softball team, she joined the cheerleading squad and slowly worked her way up to some positive social standing. She will do anything to keep her place and avoid her seemingly cursed fate, even if it means being cruel or playing dumb.

Mikey comes across as your average dimwitted asshole. In many ways, this is true. He has a tendency to turn everything into a joke, even in poor taste, and seems to have little regard for the effect this has on people. At best you'll get a very fake-sounding apology if you take offense to something he's said. He's well-known in Hawkins High for being a class clown, a title he's held since elementary school. Leave it to Mikey to waste an entire class period with dumb jokes ending with a frustrated teacher and the jock getting off of detention by virtue of being a star player. As you might expect, he is incredibly cocky and exceedingly self-assured. He has a stupid level of confidence, leading to him being equally as stupidly brave.

Though he can certainly be an abrasive presence, Mikey has his redeeming qualities. He's very action oriented and a tried-and-true problem solver. He can be sweet in his own way. Despite his clear emotional constipation and inability to take things seriously, he isn't blind to other's emotions and will often go out of his way to show his concern. This could be purchasing a gift, trying to make someone laugh, or pouring over books together to ace a test. When he isn't playing the clown, Mikey is just generally charming. He is a real optimistic, enthusiastic person with an endless social battery.

Natasha Carreira-Albano was born to Lorena and Richard Carreira-Albano. The family lived in New York for some time, Richard working as a big city cop and Lorena staying home to take care of her young daughter. With her father out of the house so often, Nat grew quite close with her mother. Despite the household's dynamic, Lorena never enforced typical gender roles on Nat, even encouraging her to pick up skateboarding and handywork. On the other hand, Richard was one to often down on Nat's hobbies, claiming no young girl should be indulging in "boyish activities". Even so, without Richard at home, Lorena continued to support Nat.

When Natasha was around 7 years old, Lorena was hospitalized with cardiac cancer. Richard took time off work to care for both his wife and daughter, though eventually had to take up more work to afford for Lorena's care. Unfortunately, Lorena would pass away less than a year later, leaving Nat in her father's care. Soon after, Richard turned to drinking and developed an addiction, resulting in him getting fired from the police force. He scrounged around for whatever work he could find afterwards, often leading him to be out of the house for hours-- or sometimes days-- at a time. Due to this, Nat was often home alone from a young age, picking up little skills and street smarts. Seeing as she was never very close with her father, it was natural for her to keep to herself. She continued to hone her skating skills, and practiced most of the activities her mother had encouraged.

Around the beginning of middle school, Nat developed romantic feelings for a girl in her classes by the name of Liz. Over the course of the year, the two became inseparable and eventually began secretly dating. Liz would often keep Nat company at her house-- seeing as she was still home alone so often. Liz led quite a different life, so Nat would take time to teach her the little things she knew, including how to skate. On one particular day, while the two were sitting in Nat's room, her father came home from a shift early. He stepped into his daughters room-- never one for knocking-- to find the two kissing. After sending Liz home, an hours long argument endued between the two, her father throwing accusation after accusation at her. The result of the argument: moving.

While it might've been an overreaction, Richard had long been considering a move to a quieter town, some place easier to live than the cities of New York. All he needed was one more good reason. So the two picked everything up and left within the week, landing themselves in none other than Hawkins, Indiana... a small, peaceful town. Richard took this opportunity to crack down on his daughter. He scored a job as a local cop once again, and did his best to enforce tight rules for Nat. Although, she had practically been on her own for long enough to find her own ways to deal with it, and everything else Hawkins had to offer.
