California stood on the pier next to the raft. Only one body tonight. That was a bit of a relief, honestly. She tapped the mic and cleared her throat, "hello everyone! A bit cold out here tonight, yeah?" She smiled, hoping to ease the tension. These events were always tense. A ritualistic body burning. Had someone told her two years ago that she would be leading them soon she would have assumed it was a racist assumption about her ancestors' practices.

Now, as she stared at the student body a chill went down her spine. What if it was her next time? She shook off the thought and held up a note, "his girlfriend left this for me to read before the burning." The crowd murmured around her and she took a breath and launched into the speech. "Jackson, as I watched you running for your life, I felt only one thing. Sweet, sweet vindication." California's eyes widened. The crowd sputtered out mixed reactions. "Serves you right for fucking around with my roommate, you nasty piece of shit. I hope she follows behind you."

The rest of the note was somehow worse, so California folded it and stared out. "I cannot read the rest of that and feel peace about it, but I will say I hope her roommate is far, far away from her tonight." The crowd roared with laughter as their president held up the rope keeping the raft from floating away. "Rest easy, or maybe not, fallen student." She released it and the volunteer archers launched their fiery arrows into the body bag.

"Well," she started as the raft became engulfed in the flames, "time to party in his honor!" Music began playing from the speaker system and students began pouring drinks and lighting bonfires. California wished she had brought a coat. She was cold and nauseous. Honestly she wanted to go to bed, but she knew she needed to stay and keep an eye on things. As a small, scrawny boy with black hair -- he'd never dealt to him before, he couldn't remember his name -- shuffled away from him, he went through his ritual: half of his profits went into his wallet, the other half into a a creased envelope he kept in the inside pocket of his battered jacket. When it was full, he'd send it home, to his first home: nowadays, of course, his home was with Townes. She was his family.

But that didn't stop him having more family who depended on him. This money was for his sister, Cyndi. If he couldn't be around to look after her, he could at least fund whatever it was she wanted to do with her life.

Bowie often found himself being the protector. He'd followed Townes away from his sisters to protect her. He sent money to Cyndi so she could protect herself. And--

"Hey, fucker! Move along pal, she isn't interested in you."

And often, he protected Barbie too. When she teetered over to him on impossibly long, impossibly thin legs, she fell forwards and he caught her. Her manicured fingernails dug into his arms as she steadied herself, and she turned eyes like dinner plates up towards him. Sometimes he felt bad. The girl had a problem, and he was only making it worse by continuing to supply her.

It wasn't his business what she did, though. Dealing required a certain amount of detachment. Usually, he was pretty detached, but Barbie was Townes' friend and she was vulnerable and therefore she was his responsibility.

"Bow, oh my god, I totally love you."

He grimaced as she planted a long, wet kiss on his exposed neck. Awkwardly, he patted her white blonde hair, and gently pried her off of his skin, as if she was some sort of leech. That answered the question he was yet to ask, then: it appeared to be an ecstasy kind of night for Barbie.

"Love you too, Babs. You want some water? Townes went to get drinks but--"
"Townes, I love her, she's like my best friend!"
"Yes, she is your best friend, maybe--"

Before he could ease Barbie into a sitting position, she had already vanished into the crowd. He sighed and slumped against the fence, plucking a joint from behind his ear and sparking it up. As he inhaled deeply, all he could think about was Townes: she'd been gone all of five minutes and he was missing her like crazy. Though, in his defense, she'd been in is life for so long that she was as much a part of him as his left kidney.

More important, actually. Because he could survive with just one kidney, but he couldn't survive without Townes.

He exhaled, marvelling at his own genius.

"I'm a fuckin' romantic, that's for sure. I'll stick that in her Valentines' card next year."

It was ironic. There was a body burning on a raft in front of her, and all Sabine could think about as she stared at the student president was a song. One called California. Agh. She rubbed her head, pinching the skin in between her eyebrows as she tried to ignore the stench of burning flesh mingling with salty seas. It was rancid, but worse was that it tainted one of her favorites. From a young age, even from trapped inside the bowels of America, Sabine loved the smell of seasalt.

It was a fond memory; her father, holding a fishing pole, and her mother, drinking a Budlight. Oh, Alabama. What shitty beaches you had. Looking back up and touching her hair absently, she saw Cali abandon the microphone and almost immediately start shivering like a leaf. It made her realize just how viciously the cold bit her skin -- eating up all warmth in sight and chilling her to the bone. She shivered, arms grasping her shoulders, looking from side to side as she tried to stop her teeth from chattering.

And there it was -- a flash of blue, but no, not one of the sea's darkening hues -- a beacon in the crowd of bland blondes and browns. Sabine turned, eyes flitting over the heads to spot it again. Blue. The freshman, was it? Freshman were... interesting. It's like they were a bunch of open nerves; all class act, no humour. It was something, at the very least. She began weaving her way through the crowds, bumping jostling bodies and coughing through puffs of smoke and the remains of the rancid stench of the corpse. What a wake up call. Almost subconsciously she grasped for her pocket -- where she kept the small knife she carried when she didn't have her bag.

She stopped for a brief moment, eyes locked on the dying sun. Orange, red, blue creeping in. Blue. Right, where was Alise? Her eyes, scanning and searching, finally gleamed upon the head of bright blue hair. It was admirable in a way, her courage. But whatever. Sidling up behind her, Sabine clucked her tongue and flicked a strand of her hair back. "Darling Alise, is it? She spun into the girl's vision, plaid skirt fluttering around thighs clad in fishnet tights. "Nice pyro show, am I right?" [/div][/div]

The last time she’d been to one, it had been an intensely awkward, somber affair complete with black umbrellas and fragile silences as the crowded mass of the community watched the casket be carried out the front gates. It all had felt like diving to the bottom of a lake and staying put among the dying algae and fish bones: lungs aching, eyes blurred, and pressure enough to internally combust. She liked Pembroke’s methods better. Sure, the wind off of the water was biting right through her thin jacket and the smell was way too much like the time her mom burnt a beef casserole to a crisp in the oven, but at least there was somewhere for all the energy trapped in the crowd to go. It was kinda thoughtful. Just like how the wording of the student body president was, steeped in some precise blend of lightheartedness and conscience. Just like how the matching fires lit up along the shore were, mirroring the lone raft.

Alise figured it was even more thoughtful that the guy handing out shitty plastic cups with a few bottles of horrifically flavored vodka lined up alongside him didn’t point out the fact that she looked way too wide-eyed to be anything but new to Pembroke. Sure, this funeral was a welcome surprise, she still could really use the comforting weight of a drink or two on her shoulders. Deaths like these were exactly what her parents had warned her about when she got her acceptance letter. Well, that and parties like these, but she figured the risk factor between the undead and rowdy college kids wasn’t exactly comparable. At least one of those could usually be distracted by good music and dumb shit to do.

She barely made it five feet through the crowd before she heard someone tsk behind her. More than that, she didn’t even have time to turn around before someone was popping into her field of vision, dark clothes and setting sun nearly blending her into the crush of students behind her. “What? Oh, yeah, just Alise. Hi.” She raised a hand for a quick wave, taking a furtive sip of her drink like that could buy her a second of time to try and place the girl’s face. Definitely not another freshman; Alise had already made a hearty attempt at memorizing most of the names of those in her grade, and she knew she’d remember someone with this striking of an aesthetic. “The fire’s definitely, uh, a lot,” she said with a tentative smile, glancing back over to where the raft was slowly drifting out into the wine-dark water. Finally sick of the incessant buzzing, Ledger fished around in his pocket and drew out the offending object, rolling his eyes when he saw the name illuminated on the screen. Of course it was her, the girl who just couldn't seem to take a hint, no matter how many times he made the situation crystal clear. Girls were, in his experience. fairly stupid. There were a few exceptions of course -- California was obviously smart enough to be president, and there were a handful of other who didn't make him want to tear his hair out -- but the majority? Not worth the trouble. He answered the call.

"Hayden!"

That name. Why did she always insist on calling him that? It wasn't like he hadn't told her a hundred times before that he was Ledger.

"Katie. I thought I told you to stop fuckin' calling me. What's it gonna take to get that message through your stupid ginger skull?"

Maybe he was being too harsh. She was a nice girl. The main problem with her was that she thought she could tie him down and ruin his life.

"It's important, Hayden. You said you'd come for Daria's birthday, it's tomorrow, you're supposed to be here."
"I'm not coming."
"Don't do this to us. She keeps asking for her daddy. I need you to be here."
"Look, kitten. I'm not her fuckin' daddy. You kept her after I told you not to. So she's all yours, babe."
"Hayden--"
"If you call me again, I will come, and I will make you sorry."

He hung up abruptly and wedged his phone back into his pocket, making a mental note to ask someone how the hell you went about blocking a number. With all of that unpleasantness out of the way, he scanned the crowd, looking for something to do.

Or someone.

The joke made his mouth twitch into a smile momentarily.

Ledger was bored, dangerously bored. The problem with being terrifying was that it came hand in hand with a pretty solitary existence. He needed a friend of some kind, someone to put up with him, and to help him. A relationship that would be beneficial. It needed to be somebody easy, somebody too nice to tell him he was being unreasonable, someone who would pity him and look after him and give up everything for him.

Like Katie had, once. He needed a new Katie. Except a Katie who'd remember to take her birth control.

He set off into the crowd, a new mission in mind. Like a wolf on the hunt.

The one thing she didn't understand was why people felt the need to give her such filthy looks. People she barely knew, especially. It made her upset. Because she knew she'd never look at somebody that way, and definitely not if they hadn't done anything. In fact, she'd been dishing out compliments like she was running out of time ever since she'd arrived.

And the worst part was, she'd only just finished sewing her outfit the night before. She'd stayed up practically all night so she could have it completed, and now it seemed that everyone hated it. Or maybe they just hated her.

Marina didn't understand that, either. She tried to be nice, she tried to be generous, she tried to be friendly, but people either never gave her a chance or tried to use her for money. They whispered behind her back about her clothes, her makeup, how her daddy was the Marlo Ruiz and she'd probably only gotten into the school with a bribe in the first place. In all honestly, Mari was beginning to think that herself and the Marina Ruiz everybody had invented were two separate people altogether.

There were a few people who did like her, though. One of whom she was waiting for.

He was, technically speaking, late. But she understood his reasons, she respected them, and she sympathised. Which meant she was completely happy to wait, even if she was starting to get cold, and could really use a drink.

As willing as she was to wait, she was ridiculously relieved when he finally materialised.

"Jagger! Hey, hi, I was waiting for you, how are you?"

Teetering towards him on too-high heels, she continued to babble, and then pulled him into an embrace.

"The party only just started. Would you like a drink? Because I might get a drink."

Disapproving looks sent her way didn't bother her now that she had backup. They didn't bother her too much anyway, because she was following a simple mantra: life is too short to wear boring clothes.

Jagger looked at the clock. It was getting close to time to leave, but his mother was having trouble. She was crying and shaking. The boy's heart was heavy as he eased her into bed. "Come on, Mama, I'll brush your hair for you. Don't cry."

Her breathing steadied as the brush moved through her hair. He sang her a lullaby after she took her medicine, to help ease her to sleep. He took a deep breath and left the phone next to her, his contact pulled up.

Jagger then went to the kitchen and put the cat and dog's food in their bowls and called them to dinner. "Come on kids let's eat." Once they were eating he got dressed and did one final check of the house. A kiss on his mom's forehead and he left. She didn't even notice. With a heavy heart he headed out, locking the door securely behind him.

He was late to the funeral, but it was pretty typical. He was just glad there weren't any zombies on the route, he really didn't need to deal with that tonight. He got to the lake after the fires were already lit and saw Marina waiting for him.

He wrapped his arms around her as soon as she was close enough. "Sorry I'm late, she's having a rough night." He pulled back to look at her. "Is this the one you were working on last night? It looks great."

The girl was flirting with some jock type, stroking his inflated ego so much that she didn’t notice as two of her drinks were swiped. Giselle sipped on the fruity liquid as she made her way away from them. If anything she was doing the girl a favour, getting sloppy drunk by a lake was a good way to end up in the next boat.

The thought reminded her of the old wives tales about young maidens who would drown themselves to rid themselves of their ties to the world. Only to be trapped for eternity, walking the earth as a ghost. It made her wonder if they existed did they just follow their reanimated bodies around. Watching as their body killed their friends and family.

It was, for lack of a better word, unfortunate, that funerals had become so commonplace. Something that once made Romi violently ill was now just another thing, a part of life, like breathing air.

Romi had always been a lover of peace and good will. A good kid with good morals. His mother in particular always looked to him as a shining star of goodness in humanity. He did all the stereotypical "good" things. He helped women cross streets and plucked cats out of trees, he fed the local population of stray animals and any time he had excess cash he'd give it to the homeless. This had not changed about him in the slightest. If anything, he'd become even more blindly charitable as time went on.

Luna. his sister, who he'd loved dearly, always said to be kind to the poorly. She was the kindest, most thoughtful of souls. She imbued him with it. The first death he witnessed during this apocalypse broke his heart. He wept for a person he hardly knew. He even wept for the people who seemed to bully him relentlessly for being out-of-touch. He cried until he had no water left in him. Because death was tragic. Luna had said that, too. "Death is an utterly tragic thing." She held his hands. "If you stay with me, brother, we'll never have to die."

But at some point during this whole thing, he was buried by a sick complacency. He feared his heart was becoming dead. He filled sachets with herbs, wore crystal pendants around his neck, lit candles and incense until the smoke clouded up his room, or until his roomie yelled at him to knock it off. It made him anxious. The possibility, the idea, that he was losing touch with the goodness in him. The goodness his sister had worked so hard to cultivate, the goodness he'd worked so hard to maintain, now melting away like ice cream on sun-stained asphalt. Vapor. Poof.

For this one, he tried to force it. He did cry a little, not because he was sad, but because forcing himself to cry was immensely painful. By the time they'd actually sent off the body of the poor victim, he'd already stopped, and if anyone were to look, they'd have no clue. Sighing, he reached for the dimebag he'd been carrying, considering rolling a blunt. It seemed insensitive, but did anyone really care anymore? Was sensitivity on anybody's mind? But he withdrew an empty hand. He surely wouldn't be the first person to sacrifice his decency.

Now, standing a fair distance away from the castoff point, he was gazing at the small arrangements of flowers growing past the pier. He'd planted them, of course. What's the point of writing "plant a flower" in your Twitter bio if you yourself won't do the same? And, as he watched, an unwieldy foot crushed one of the white daisies. Romi felt destroyed by that, his chest tightened and he forced himself to look away.

This wasn't what Luna would have wanted for him.

Any job was a good job, after all.

But the light of the raft was already dimming along with the last honeyed remnants of sunset, and Jason hadn’t found a soul who wasn’t swept up into conversation within five minutes. Which was, like, good. It was an objectively good thing that the campus community was tight enough that even from the advantage of a six foot viewpoint he couldn’t see anyone looking lonesome, but it meant Jason had nothing to do but stand still for all of twenty minutes, and that never led to good things. He was already starting to regret leaving his shop. He could’ve cleaned out the toaster ovens. Again. Or converted a mini-fridge to fit into his old oversized suitcase, hopefully without frying the outer layer of already-cracked leather.

Jason and regret went hand in hand, just like Jason and restlessness, Jason and boredom, and countless other unfortunate descriptors that totally fucked up his clean concept of what a social worker ought to act like. It all seemed kinda hypocritical to expect the kids in the school he interned with to figure out how to act like total adults when he couldn’t fit the bill either. At least he had the luxury of legal alcohol to help him through it.

Not that he was drinking now; he was honed in on his lazy circles of half-assed self-reflection and scanning the crowd near him in equal measure, and bringing a drink into the equation felt like it’d tip things right over and into the waters of time-wasting. If there was one thing he couldn’t stand to do, it was nothing at all.

He probably should’ve felt more guilty about the way his expression lit up like a goddamn Christmas tree when he saw Romi loitering alone. He vaguely knew them from sheer campus osmosis alone; the hippie guy, all art and long hair and more contemplation than Jason knew was possible for a living, breathing human being to stomach. Needless to say, Jason thought he was pretty rad. Jason, generally, though every living soul was pretty rad. And that was reason enough to at least go say hi.

“Hey!” Jason called as he good-naturedly pushed his way through the crowd, less of a direct line and more of a uncaring meander in Romi’s general direction in direct correlation to how many different ways he was being pushed to at the same time. “Romi, right?” He finally eased to a halt relatively in front of Romi, offering up a one-note grin. “I think I’ve got history seminar with you this semester?”

He barely noticed Basile out of the corner of his eye and through the dimming light but was quick to drag him into the conversation too. Partially literally, with a strategic half-step and a pat on the shoulder that was nearing on bear hug. “And the campus’s favorite foodie, how’re you doing, bud? You two’ve met before, right? I hope so, I suck at introductions. Couldn’t remember my own last name if I had my driver’s license right in front of me.” He was beaming by now. One-on-one conversations were great and all, but the more people to talk to, the better. Less chance of anyone feeling left out. Besides, he liked Romi well enough since he was one of the few people on campus who didn’t actively give out bad vibes, and he liked Basile well enough because the guy was just plain talented. Both with classic baked goods and the more specialized type. Jason was content; two interesting people to chat up until they got sick of him was not bad for a rough start to the festivities. Its delectable aroma pervaded the air- a melange of chocolate, fresh pastry and dabs of sweet caramel. Basile hummed as he made his way around the kitchen assembling his latest creation. He had found a way to infuse his special ingredient into every element of his snickers inspired tarts. His old edible recipe was known for being powerful so this one was going to knock peoples socks off.

As his grandma always said, “never promise to make a pie and fail to deliver on that promise.” Whenever he was in the kitchen baking up a storm it always took him back to his childhood. His grandmother was a famous pastry chef in her time and he always looked forward to seeing her. She created his love of food, spending hours together in the kitchen laughing and enjoying each others company. Nothing beats the feeling of making something with someone you love. He didn’t think she would approve of his secret ingredient though.

His eyes flicked up to the clock as he placed his tarts on the serving tray. It was already past time to leave, he was late. Whenever he started baking he could never keep track of time. It was so easy to get lost in the art of making delicious morcels. He quickly added the rest of the treats to the serving tray. If he continued to fluff around he would miss the party altogether. At his current speed, the fires would already be out by the time he got there.

After rushing back to his dorm to get changed out of his baking attire he was finally ready to head down. As he walked to the party, the tray of goodies in hand he sent out a tweet for the student populace to find. While most would expect him to come with the usual special treats he had a surprise. This lot were freebies. It was mainly so he could observe how they reacted to the new recipe. Then prices could be adjusted from there.

Upon his arrival, there was a chorus of “Hey Basile!” from his excited peers. The only thing college kids liked more than edibles were free edibles. By the time he had made it to the middle of the crowd he was already relatively tipsy from the drinks, people had been offering him. This was the life.

As he paused for a minute deciding where to go next the decision was made for him. He was pulled into a one-armed almost bearlike hug by Jason as he was pulled into a conversation. “The usual delivering some special treats. It’s a new recipe” he chuckled, holding out the tray to the two. If they were in a conversation he could observe the effects without it being creepy. That was very mad scientist thinking. No one would Green out. Probably. As long as no one ate more than one it should be fine. “I think we have met in passing. It’s Romi, right? Also, Jason, your name is basically a superhero name. It is the easiest thing to remember.”

“You lads got your eye on anyone tonight? This campus has the cutest girls you’ll ever come across” he said, winking at a group of giggling girls as they made their way past. He had already given them the tarts but there was always the other kind of chocolate he didn’t mind on delivering. “Or guys. The wind was howling, the fire blazing, but Marilyn's world was far from a Christmas carol. Actually, it was exactly like a Christmas carol, except her true love didn't let her in and she was left to freeze to death while staring at a burning body.

Reaching up to rub her shoulders, she let her eyes drop from California, who was wholeheartedly doing her job as student president, and now apparently, funeral priest. She started weaving through the crowd, ducking under people filming the fiery corpse floating off into the sea. She was only here for one reason anyways -- some hot-shot overly tall sophomore was bringing edibles, or something like that. Little Mills might be all innocent and small town, but wheat wasn't the only thing growing in those green fields.

A flapping hand hit her shoulder, and she flipped around with a frown. Another gaggle of stupid giggling girls -- guess some people really never change after highschool. Marilyn sighed and briefly turned on her phone, trying to distract herself from the raucous talking clogging her ears and the fact that nobody was alone.

But her, of course.

Grumbling, she rose on her toes, grateful for the chunky sneakers she wore. In truth, they were more of a style choice than thoughtful precaution, but a win was a win. She peered over the crowds, scanning through squinted eyes until... just a few feet away, there he was. Glitzy suit and all. What can I be saying? I look like a corner whore overdosed on plaid and probably a little bit of black tar heroin. And, just to her luck, he was standing with supreme good-boy Jason and spiritual stoner Romi.

Approaching the trio, Marilyn tapped on Basile's shoulder and looked him dead on, batting her eyelashes. Preferably she wouldn't even have to look at the other two. "Hey Basile," She murmured, dipping her chin with a coy smile and leaning forward gently, "got any of those treats I heard about?"

Funerals were never Dante’s favorite — to the point, it made him sick to his stomach. His thoughts often plagued with the sight of his mother, and seeing her nimble body laid in the casket, was enough to scare him away from them. It spooked him out to think something that was one living, was gone. Therefore he often opted out of them, and found solace in his lonesome, however this person, in particular was a complete stranger to him, much like the others who passed.

He was never the chatty type, nor did he have many friends. He was intimidating and detached, scaring most people away with a simple glance, and often kept to himself making his social circle small. Yet, despite it all, he found himself in the crowd alongside his sister, Makayla; who dragged him along to help in supporting her friend, California. If it was anyone else, he would’ve said no, but when it came to his sister, Dante could never find it in him to reject her — she was all he had, so he could spare just a little bit of his time to be here with her. Plus, he didn’t mind California. Much of her was a mystery to him, but he had some form of respect for her, for doing what she does.

Dante only stayed by the side of his sister temporarily, planting a kiss on her cheek and a fleeting whisper of “see you” before he walked away in anticipation of the burning. He could skip out on this part.

He’d only gotten so far, before the sounds of celebration and music began to play, and the swarm of people dispersed to party. However, amongst the crowd he bumped into a figure much smaller than him and almost knocked them over if it wasn’t for him steadying them. “Jesus, you good?” Upon seeing the person, the rest of his words died on the tip of his tongue, it was Barbie. He hadn’t seen her for awhile, and unsurprisingly she was a mess.

Townes took her time going to get drinks, knowing Bowie was likely dealing. She didn't mind it, had no issues being around it, but sometimes the buyers were weird. Call it paranoia. Call it PTSD. Whatever. All she knew is sometimes she worried about him.

Clutching their drinks tightly she eased through the crowd. People recognized her and moved out of her way, knowing she wouldn't change paths. She felt a bit uneasy with so many people in the area. Unable to keep her eyes on everyone at once.

Her pace, face, and attitude didn't falter. No one would ever know about the images in her head. No one but Bowie, Nixon, and Georgia. Not even Barbie knew. She probably wouldn't get it, really.
