It was midday and the runners had just arrived back from the daily run. Isaac was talking with Nik about what he had found. "So, Nik, did you find anything interesting or noteworthy?" He was glancing towards the open doors as if a griever was about to leap out and maul them both to death right then and there. He shrugged it off and looked back at Nikolay.

Nikolay
Runner
Interaction - Isaac

Nikolay swept his hand through his hair, the blonde and some slightly brown strands hung down sloppily in his face, covering his rather tanned forehead. When he first arrived he had been pale, but now as he took to running through the maze, he developed a rather tanned appearance. The runner wiped away some of the beads of sweat from his forehead as he looked over at Isaac, he trusted the guy full heartedly, that's why he wasn't afraid to report back to the Glade Leader and Keeper of Runners. "If I'm being honest, Isaac, they're getting closer--not us, those monsters," he informed rather quietly.

Nikolay sighed before scratching at his head again, his eyes darting around cautiously. "I don't want the others to worry...but I took a route a little closer to the entrance and, I heard something. I had to retrace my steps so that I could avoid it, that's why I showed up early today," he concluded, casting his stormy eyes towards the maze behind him. "What will we do if they get out of hand? They haven't gotten this close to the maze before--I've never even heard one of those things out in the day!" he was a little frazzled. Like most people, he didn't have much experience with a griever, so when he thought he heard one he was conflicted.

Elise a. Adair, Keeper of the Cooks

The Glade's kitchen was a place that, needless to say, was a regular visiting spot for essentially ever Glader. The 5 cooks, clearly varying in skill, spent day and night cycling through the most important of meals in order to keep everyone in good shape. It was admittedly not the most intensive task one could be given, but it sure kept you busy.

The Kitchen, also known as 'Elise's castle', was a place that was once nothing more than a mere wooden shack with a measly counter dividing itself from the rest of the Glade. The then newbie, now Keeper of the Cooks, was not content with what they had. Luckily, after having bribed/convinced the Keepers in charge of building and repairing respectively, it was time for renovations.

What was once a little wooden shack was now a.. somewhat bigger wooden shack. Elise's palace had doubled in size, with the counter stretching from one end to another, leaving a moderate space to the side for the cooks to hurriedly move in and out of. The many pots and pans were no longer scattered all over the place like madness, but instead neatly stored in the newly-built racks. To make sure they wouldn't be baking in the sun while standing at the counters the roof was also extended, casting a nice comfortable shadow over the cooks. The former 'scars' of the Kitchen were also plastered up, and the place was also given a bit more support to make it not look like it could fall over at any moment. Needless to say, Elise was very happy.

Lunch was generally the least intensive preparation wise due to sandwiches making up most of the midday menus. Elise always liked to start the day off with a proper, savoury breakfast, causing lunch to generally be less spectacular. People were welcome to come to pick something up right from twelve o' clock, although most would wait a bit longer. Nevertheless, there were always people that just couldn't wait for Elise's beautiful creations. Today, the lovely Mr Moody was on that list.

Elise respected the Keeper of the Baggers and, although their (one-sided) conversations didn't usually last very long, found him to be a pretty okay guy. He had his weird quirks, though, and Elise was definitely not one to shy away from teasing him for them.

At this point, it was pretty well known that Elise liked to 'make use' of her position of power to poke a bit of fun at a certain set of individuals. Anton was amongst those that had to suffer.

A cheeky smirk had crept up on her face from the moment she had noticed the seemingly stoic individual, her hands placed on her hips while she happily stared at the Bagger as he appeared in front of the counter.

"My my, look who's early. Did you miss me that much?" Elise teased, giggling at her own oh-so-funny remark. She would walk to the side of the counter where most ingredients were stationed, getting to work on her thoroughly excited customer's meal. Today, a ham and cheese sandwich with lettuce, tomatoes and a good dose of mayonnaise was on the menu. Elise always preferred to prepare such things on the spot to make them look as fresh as they could.

While she kept herself busy piling up the sandwich, Elise obviously wouldn't just stop talking. No, she had to enjoy the moment as much as she could.

Grabbing a solid spoonful of mayonnaise, Elise made an attempt at sketching a nice little smiley face, speaking up during her artistic adventure.

"So, how's my favourite Bagger doing? We barely get to talk these days. Such a pity, don't you think? We should totally chat up sometime." Elise looked over her shoulder, an impish smile still stuck to her face while she knew all too well what she was doing. She received no reaction, but she honestly didn't expect one anyway. His expression was plenty.

"You know, smiling a bit once in a while wouldn't hurt you. A very wise, stunning, culinary talented person once said that a smile looks good on everyone. That includes grumpy Baggers. " The cook finished up the last eye of the smiley before pushing the last slice of bread on top of it and cutting her creation with one diagonal sweep of the knife she was wielding. Placing the knife back on the counter, Elise moved back to Anton with the plate resting on her palm as if she was a waitress.

Coming to a standstill in front of Anton with the counter in between them, Elise tried to lock eyes with the Keeper, her expression seemingly playful and excited. "That'll be one smile." Elise would tease, holding the plate far enough from him so he wouldn't be able to snatch it away from her. "I'm waiting," she added, her left hand moving back down to be placed on her hip while she kept eyeing the taller individual.

Sooner or later, Elise was rewarded for her persistence with a light glimmer of happiness manifesting itself in a smirk. She would've been happier with a fully fledged smile, but this was fine too. They would have plenty of time to keep building it up.

"Wonderful. Make sure not to smile more than that or you'll have all the girls passing out." Elise's smile grew brighter as a result of her success and consecutive teasing, placing the food down on the counter for Anton to take. "Enjoy~"

And now it was time to wait for the next customer.

THEO LEANED ON THE GARDEN HOE THAT HE HAD BEEN WIELDING FOR THE PAST THREE HOURS OR SO. HE LIGHTLY PRESSED HIS HAND ON HIS FOREHEAD, AS IF HE WAS HOLDING HIS HEAD. THE BOY CLOSED HIS EYES AND LIGHTLY FURROWED HIS BROWS, WAITING FOR THE DULL PAIN TO GO AWAY. LATELY, HE HAD BEEN GETTING HEADACHES QUITE OFTEN. WHEN HE TRIED TO CHASE THE REASON, HE ONLY CAME TO A FEW CONCLUSIONS. THEO COULD MEND ANYONE’S BROKEN BONES, BUT WHEN IT CAME TO HIS OWN HEADACHES, HE NEGLECTED THEIR TREATMENT. THE REASON FOR HIS HEADACHES WAS EITHER STRESS, LACK OF SLEEP, PRESSURE CAUSED HIS GLASSES, OR THE SCORCHING SUN THAT WAS FRYING HIS RAVEN LOCKS. NO MATTER HOW LONG HE HAD BEEN IN THE GLADE, HE STILL WAS THE SAME PALE AND LANKY BOY WITH THE SAME INTERESTS. HE WANTED A TAN, HE WANTED TO BE SAFE FROM THE SUNBURNS.

THIS WHOLE ‘GARDENING’ THING WAS REALLY GETTING TO HIM. IT WAS ROUGH, PHYSICAL LABOR. THEO, ON THE OTHER HAND, ENJOYED OTHER TASKS MORE. SOMETIMES, SECRETLY, THEO CAUGHT HIMSELF WISHING FOR SOMEONE TO HURT THEMSELVES OR GET INTO SOME ACCIDENT SO HE COULD SWITCH BACK TO HIS JOB. HE WAS A MED-JACK AFTER ALL, WHY WAS HE DOING THIS CRAP? RIGHT, BECAUSE HE HAD NOTHING ELSE TO DO. NO GIRLS AND GUYS MOANING ABOUT THEIR PAINS AND BROKEN BONES TODAY. AS SOON AS HE WOULD CATCH HIMSELF THINKING THOSE THOUGHTS, HE SHOOK THEM AWAY AND SCOLDED HIMSELF UNDER HIS BREATH.
AS THE PAIN PERSISTED, THEO GAVE UP ON THE GARDENING EVENTUALLY. HE LAZILY SHIFTED HIS EYES TOWARDS THE KITCHEN. TECHNICALLY, HE WAS ALLOWED TO GRAB SOME GRUB NOW. HE HAD MISSED HIS BREAKFAST, AFTER ALL, THIS MORNING. IT WAS SOMETHING HE RARELY ALLOWED TO HAPPEN. YOU’D NEVER KNOW WHEN THE FOOD WOULD STOP COMING. BESIDES, BREAKFAST WAS THE BEST MEAL OF THE DAY. THE THINGS THAT FOLLOWED AFTER WERE LACKLUSTER COMPARED TO THAT. HE DROPPED THE GARDEN HOE AND COULD ALMOST FEEL THE FLYING DAGGERS OF SOME OF THE TRACK-HOES THAT WERE STILL BUSY WORKING. WHATEVER, HE DID NOT CARE.

PUSHING HIS GLASSES UP, HE SCRUNCHED HIS NOSE LIKE SOME ANIMALS WOULD SOMETIMES DO. TO HIS DISMAY, THE KITCHEN SEEMED TO BE RATHER CROWDED. SOMEONE WAS EVEN TALKING. GROSS, A BIG NO FROM THEO. HE KEPT ANALYZING THE SHACK. IT HAD CHANGED A LOT OVER THE YEARS, BUT THE BIGGEST CHANGE WAS RATHER RECENT. HE WAS SURE THAT THE CULPRIT WAS THAT ONE GIRL WHO WOULD OFTEN PLAY FAVORITES WHEN IT CAME TO MEAL SIZES AND SPICES. “TROUBLESOME,” HE SIGHED AS HE STARTED SNOOPING AROUND, TRYING HIS BEST NOT TO BOTHER THE OTHERS.

Isaac simply looked at Nikolay and sighed. "Just get yourself some food, ya slinthead. We'll talk about this at tonight's Gathering." With that, he walked off to chat with Elise. Once there, he simply leaned against the side of the shack. He was fidgeting with a small knife, looking it over closely.
Isaac turned to face the Gladers who were currently eating. A few of them nodded in acknowledgment while a few more just ignored him.

Nikolay
Runner
Interaction - Isaac, Elise

Nikolay scratched at the back of his head, his forehead still dripped with a few beads of sweat, only getting smeared with his sleeve. The blonde haired brute was still frazzled by the time he finished speaking with Isaac, he seemed to only further his worries about what he had heard earlier that day while out on his run. The often friendly man was quietly walking towards camp, crossing the open area slowly. He had never really seen nor heard one of those monsters before, so it could be a good estimate that he might have just heard the walls of the maze creaking loudly, but he doubted they would groan and growl in such a horrid way.

Even as he walked, Nikolay tried to make sense of what happened, a frown adorning his jawline. He kept to himself as he walked, giving the occasional wave or 'hello' to a Glader that approached or tried to talk to him, though most were busy so he was left to his own devices until he reached the cooking shack. This was when he pulled himself together. Wiping away the frown and putting on a relatively blank expression as his blueish grey eyes flicked over towards what looked like Elise talking to poor Anton again.

Nikolay couldn't help but smile at the sight, he didn't speak to Anton very often, he kept to himself and since Nikolay was off on his own during the day aside from going on his runs when they might partner up, he didn't really try and talk to others outside of the runner roles. Sure he talked to the cooks, Isaac, and sometimes Max, the map keepers were always someone he gave his reports to as well, but he tried to stick to talking to people he would have to get to know often. Nik wanted to know every name of the people he would go out running with, so in case something happened, he might know how to address them and their absence or just to jump back in and hunt them down within the maze.

"Hey Elise," Nik waved over at the cook. He wondered how long it might take to appease the cooking queen, her price was usually high when she was teasing someone. Shifting his weight he jumped in line, he was rather hungry and needed some rest. Truthfully he thought he could fall asleep on the ground if he had to, but it wasn't a surprise. Nikolay was often the first asleep and the last to wake up, it was a relative fault of his, almost sleeping in way too late, and then he was usually one of the few who decided to take a few extra minutes within the maze too. Though currently as he waited, he was eager to grab a sandwich of the cooks' making, he always enjoyed dinner and his time off.

CLEO
It had been a long day. As much as Cleo enjoyed a good run, there was also the fact that the runners all came back each day with no new findings. Well, there was something definitely up lately, something that both Isaac and Nikolay noticed as well, being fellow runners, but that was best kept on the down low. Cleo hated saying things that reduced the morale or optimism or hope of the other Gladers, and she refused to let herself down by worrying about it either. For the time being, she wanted to focus on her typical routine, which meant heading right over to the food shack. She was starving, as she always was after a run, and it was during this time each say that the Glade’s best cook got her best customer because Cleo certainly could eat a lot.

Still unable to slow to a normal walking pace, Cleo jogged over to the line. A few people were milling about after already having gotten their food so it made the line looker bigger than it was so after a bit of squeezing theough and trying to get on her toes to see where the hell she was, Cleo just managed to shove herself out from between two bulky builders before landing herself quite unsteadily right next to Anton. To keep from crashing into the counter, she latched onto Anton’s arm, eyes widening briefly out of the worry that she would still crash into the counter anyway, but she managed to steady herself before she let her fingers uncurl from Anton’s arm and a wide smile reappeared on her face.

“Elise, I am starving,” she announced, for the moment, not having eyes for anyone else but her because she would be presenting Cleo with the food she loved so much. “I will be coming back for seconds once everyone else is served,” she added, as she always did. Cleo didn’t like knowing that she was possibly taking away someone else’s chance to have a full meal so she waited till they all had at least one helping before she allowed herself to get a little greedy.

It was then that she noticed who was around her. To her left, stood Nikolay, fellow runner, and she gave him a grin. “How is it that you beat me here?” She asked, cocking her head to the side curiously. She was unaware that he’d gotten back earlier than usual that day.

Shifting her attention — because she so rarely stayed focused on one thing or person for too long when there were other distractions around — Cleo turned on Anton, the same grin still on her face. “And how are you today, Annie? I feel like it’s been forever since I saw you.”

Cleo was well aware that a nickname like that could reduce how much Anton already tolerated her but for some reason, Cleo liked to believe that that wouldn’t happen. Maybe because she was too much of an optimist. Either way, nothing could stop her once she set her mind to something and she decided long ago that whenever she could, she would call Anton the nickname she came up with for him — which wasn’t very hard really. And Cleo had a habit of making nicknames for people she really clicked with. Just like Elise was Ellie and Nikolay Nikki. And perhaps Cleo also had a problem ending people’s nicknames in an ‘ee’ sound.

Theo was joined on his trip back to the kitchen by Rewa. Not a medic but a full-time gardener, he's likely come to know that she doesn't talk while she works. But when she set her hoe aside, she can be remarkably social. At the moment, though, she's somewhere in between for she's making the trip to wheelbarrow over a small crop just harvested, likely to supply whatever the cooks put together for dinner that night.

"You look tired, Theo," Rewa says at last as they approach the kitchen. She doesn't seem especially pleased to see how busy it is either. She turns a concerned look on him, though, as she parks the wheelbarrow. "You feeling okay?"

Given his own disinterest in small talk, and her preference for focusing on the job, Theo's headaches had likely never come up but she looked at him now as if noticing him for the first time. "I won't say that we don't need you in the fields, whenever you have time. But if you need a lie down or something..." She shrugged. "I'll pick up the slack. Besides, we need our medic health or who's going to treat us?" There's a flash of a teasing smile.

Theo was caught off-guard by Rewa's words. He recognized her voice but was still surprised for some reason. He had noticed her wheelbarrowing her way next to him but was still surprised to hear her talk. She didn't seem to talk much when she was working, and he didn't mind that at all. Theo didn't know much about the young lady, other than how hard-working she was. All day every day she was gardening and farming and whatnot. It was admirable in a sense, how she relentlessly continued her work to supply others.

He turned around sharply on his heels as she addressed him. "Tired? Oh...it's just my face," the boy waved his hand before his face. There was some truth to that. He had learned over the years that most of his expressions were either annoyed, fearful, sad or plain neutral. He did feel nice though when someone did ask about his condition, even if he detested small-talk. "It's unfair if you do all the work. Don't worry about me," his voice was oddly quiet.

Theo reminded himself of a mouse with his grey hoodie, almost whispering voice and nervous mannerisms. Even now, he was fiddling with the sleeve of his hoodie. If you looked closely, you'd notice how the sleeve hem on the left side was decorated with snags. Some people bit their nails, he chewed on the hem of his sleeve when he was nervous. A health hazard? Sure thing it was. "I- uh, we should get sandwiches," he scrunched his nose again and tried to motion towards the shack...kitchen...thing

Almost right after having handed of Anton's sandwiches, Elise was about to go back to preparing some sandwiches seeing as more people seemed to steadily arrive. Another cook had opened up a line next to her, sending a good portion of the arrivals into that direction. The Keeper, motivated as ever, was energetically hopped over to the ingredients, only to be caught by the familiar voice of a runner.

Turning around again with a curious look on her face, Elise noticed a well-known individual offer her a friendly wave. A smile instantly appeared back on her face, waving back at the taller blond. "Hey! You're back early. How's it going?" She stood still for a while, carrying a plate in each hand while she looked at Nikolay. Seeing him back so early raised several questions, but there wasn't really time to ask them all at the moment. That lack of time was reassured by another runner crashing in through the lines, and Elise couldn't help but chuckle when she seemed to pretend as nothing happened.

"Oh really?" Elise responded sarcastically, referring to Cleo just stumbling herself through the line. The cook walked back to the ingredients and started doing her magic rituals at a slightly faster pace than before, although she made sure to add just as much love as she did to Mr Grumpy's plate. She nodded approvingly as she Cleo informed her of her later return, which was obviously something Elise had grown accustomed to at this point. Although perhaps not 'fair' in some people's eyes, Elise always made sure to add a little extra to the meals of the Runners. she felt like giving a bit of encouragement to arguably the most important pieces of the group wouldn't do anyone much harm.

"Sure thing!" Elise finished dissecting yet another successful sandwich, piling both halves on top of each other and secretly adding a third triangle to the collection before manoeuvring herself back to the front counter. As said before, a little extra encouragement wouldn't hurt anyone. It was essential that the runners ate well. Besides, Nikolay was an especially friendly individual, so Elise was instinctively inclined to give him some bonus love.

"I still have some cake left over. Last time I checked one particularly chunky slice still had your name on it." Elise smiled brightly towards Cleo as she made her way back to the counter, placing the especially filled plate in front of the male runner. Her eyes would trail off to him before she spoke up. "Same goes for you, Nik." Elise winked playfully, turning back around to put something together for Cleo.

While her hands did all the work, Elise couldn't help but listen in on the conversation going on at the counter. She finished up Cleo's plate right about when she coined the term 'Annie', sending a thorough surge of excitement through the cook's body. Elise could practically feel Anton's brooding that she'd imagine he'd be going through right now, so she kept herself from adding more fuel to the fire. She would definitely keep that nickname in mind, though. No doubt about it.

Returning back to the counter, Elise held Cleo's plate that had also gotten a third slice despite having already said she'd come back for seconds. Elise didn't really worry about there not being enough for everyone. She had a knack for instinctively knowing when they were at risk, and they surely weren't at the moment. The track-hoes and slicers brought in plenty of resources to work with, so as long as their novice cook wouldn't mess up they'd be just fine.

"Here you go!" Elise put the plate down in front of Cleo and gave it a little nudge forward, stepping back with a satisfied grin on her face. Although she wanted to chat up with the runners, she would eventually move back to make more sandwiches. There were still plenty of Gladers to feed, after all.

"It's just my face."

Rewa couldn't help but smirk slightly at the acknowledgment. The truth was Theo was one of the most unlikeable lot in the Glade. He'd never seemed particularly cruel or intentionally awful. Rather, he maintained a sense of separation, of aloofness, like he was above all of this. It didn't help that he was even less social than she tended to be. But then, Rewa was well aware several of her fellow track-hoes thought much the same of her. Theo had a recognizeable focus to him; it just didn't extend to gardening. And even there, doing a job he wasn't passionate about, he still worked without complaint. Which was more than she could say of some of the other Gladers who'd been press-ganged into helping out now and then.

"I suppose I can understand that," she said in reply as the two stopped in the kitchen. "People tell me I look angry sometimes when I'm just working."

When he dismissed her concern and insisted on pulling his weight, Rewa could only nod. It was fair and reflected a good work ethic. It also meant she'd keep a closer eye on him, look ofr symptoms of pain and overwork. Rewa was inclined to be a lot more sympathetic to someone with a good work ethic than she was when faced with an excuse by someone just trying to get out of doing their chores for the day.

"We're here, we might as well get sandwiches," she said, agreeing with Theo. When he motioned towards the kitchen, Rewa shrugged and took the lead, urging him to come in with her.
In the kitchen itself, Elise looked to be hard at work making sandwiches. Rewa rather liked the best cook in the Glade. She was friendly, outgoing, charismatic, every bit the engaging conversationalist that Rewa herself sometimes wished she could be. Tucking a strand of curly brown hair back behind her ear, she slid up to the counter and tapped it to get Elise's attention. Then she smiled brightly and said, "If you have any sandwiches handy, Theo and I could both use one. Whatever you have is fine, I'm not picky. Theo, go ahead first while I unload the wheelbarrow for the kitchen."

And then Rewa went to work restocking the kitchen's improvised pantry.

Having relaxed, Nikolay slowly placed his hands into his pants pockets, he wanted to lift his eyes towards the wall but he didn't want to get shaken up all over again. He wasn't this thrown off by something before, he seemed to work himself up badly, so when he had ended up reaching Elise and her cooking shack, he forced himself to slather a grin on his jaw. "Hey Elise," he greeted stepping up to the counter like area she stood in front of giving out sandwiches. Nikolay was rather watchful to not bump into anyone, his lighter colored eyes flicking over towards the cook. "I didn't get very far today is all," he informed, "I'm good, starving but good," he teased slightly, light colored eyes flashing as he looked over at her. He was genuinely getting calmed down with the familiarity everyone brought, and the smell of the food shack also reminded him of something familiar, home.

It felt all the more casual when a very familiar redhead trotted on over. Cleo was one of his friends, well everyone was practically a friend and family member to Nikolay, that went on runs. He liked his fellow runner, her bouncy and perky spirit was refreshing when he got nervous, so as he was currently frazzled a little, he let his grin broadened. "Jeez, who would have thought you got slower Cleo! I thought you were faster than that," he jested, looking back over to Elise.

Once she passed a plate his way, he was back to his usual self. Nikolay quickly snagged the sandwich off of the plate and began eating it, "As always Eli, it tastes amazing. Thanks," he added munching quietly on one of the halves he received. He wasn't one to notice the small details, but he had noticed the extra half he got when he started running. He found that little ounce a very appreciative action, he always wanted to give back but never found a real way to do it other than carrying some stuff around when people needed it. "Whoa, whoa, did I hear cake? Y'know, I'm a guy, maybe I should also get Cleo's slice," he hummed amusedly, poking another teasing comment towards Cleo. "Just joking, don't worry, your food is safe from me," he added after a moment, he had nearly forgotten how protective she might have gotten if he had been serious.

"Hey, let me know if you need some help, yeah? Since I got back early today I can always lend a hand when I'm not running," he called over his shoulder. Nikolay stuffed the last bit of his sandwich half before strolling over to a place to sit. Placing his rump into the chair, Nikolay leaned back gratefully. He'd have to tell the other runners before long of his findings, maybe later that night when it'd be quieter, that way they could avoid that area. He knew the maze would end up changing but there were a few paths that would lead to the same area. He wasn't entirely sure what Isaac wanted him to do about that situation, or if he would instead broach that topic with a few other people. Though as he thought that over, he realized he didn't have much of anything new for their map keeper, Nikolay slumped in his chair as he wondered if any of the other's would add to the map.
