Duncan "Dunk" Powell

Age: 12

Personality: Duncan is an eager boy, somewhat naive yet adventurous and free-spirited. He places much value in his own freedom and independence, and has little time for people who want to "push folks around and tell them what to do". While his impetuosity and disregard for authority can land him in trouble, his heart remains in the right place. He is kind, outgoing, compassionate, and is never above inconveniencing himself if it will help others.

Background: With the decade-long period of economic stress and labor unrest in Great Britain, the interwar period may not have seemed like the best time to bring a child into the world. Nevertheless, Duncan Powell was born on 18 August 1927 to a, young, working-class couple in Cardiff. His was a poor family, by all means, with his father raising as much money as he could as a dockworker and the mother staying home to tend to the household. Dunk's earlier years were average, considering his social class. He got fed twice a day, made friends with other boys at school, and he grew very close to his mother, as his father spent a lot of time at the docks, working. Yet his life was not quite so idyllic. As Dunk grew older, he started to hear some of the arguments his parents were having. They argued about everything: money, the family, the economy, his father's long hours away from home. It saddened Dunk to see his parents not getting along, but he didn't see it his place to step in, especially since some of those arguments were about him, and the others were quite hard for a young boy to understand at times.

On 3 September, 1939, just two weeks after his twelfth birthday, the United Kingdom and France declared war on Germany, who had commenced its invasion of Poland two days prior. Dunk's father had been conscripted into the military, leaving his wife and son behind in Cardiff. His mother did not have the funds to get herself or her son out of the country, but out of caution, she left her son in the care of a "family friend" in England, somewhere the Germans would never think to bomb, while she stayed behind in Wales. Dunk was uncomfortable with the prospect of leaving his home and family behind, yet also excited to have the chance to travel this far from home. Deciding to make the best with what he had, he boarded a train to England, hoping he could wait out the war in one piece.
