Let It Be What It Is

She loosened the sword in the sheath. "You know exactly why I am here. I need to take my apprentice back to her home."

"Your apprentice? You mean my newest daughter? She's better off here, Farkrie. With me and my family. Come, it's been too long since you had dinner with us."

Lenira waved to her, and gestured to the open door. The city was bustling just outside it.

Lenira smiled, and stepped out into the heart of Duheimdale. It was a beautiful city, and with a port it made it the center for trade and commerce. One of the largest cities in the empire.

And it was Lenira's. The local government bowed to her and her husband, and no authority could touch her. The people, if they knew who she was, bowed low and got out of her and Farkrie's way. Though Lenira didn't see, but Farkrie probably noticed, some of the people were hiding children and teenagers from Lenira's sight. She was well-known for her child soldiers.

At the edge of the city, but not too far from the county jail, was a grand house, with gardens around it and a large, iron gate guarding it. Here Lenira swept her hand across the surface, and it opened silently.

As they walked through the gardens to the manor, other teenagers joined them. All were under Lenira's power, and all glared at Farkrie. But before they reached the house, Lenira turned, and went towards a gazebo. A small lunch had already been set. Hot food and cool drink sat on the table with two chairs, and Lenira invited Farkrie to sit as a young man pulled out her chair, and she began to eat the delicious food.

Farkrie ignored the food, and glared over the table at Lenira. "I see you haven't stopped recruiting." She gently brushed the minds of the children, and each one was brainwashed by this woman.

She had no idea where Gwen was anymore. Knowing Lenira, she was probably in a room full of wards to keep out magic.

Lenira smiled, and one of the children near her stepped forward. She held his hand, patting and admiring the strength it had. "Recruiting is such a... vulgar word. I adopt my children. And I love them all, dearly. Is that what you did? Adopted... what was her name? Gwen? But Farkrie, you must eat. The food isn't poisoned, I assure you."

Farkrie glanced at the plate in front of her. "Sorry, but I will have to decline your offer. Now if you'll excuse me.." She pushes her chair back and stands.

"Where are you going, Farkrie? Surely you wouldn't be so idiotic as to try and find the girl on your own. You won't, you know. Even I don't know where she is. You are too late, anyway," Lenira continued as Farkrie stood. "I'm already beginning to erase your poison from her mind."

Unknown to anyone at the gazebo, Gwen was being carried through the secret tunnels to a safehouse. Safe being a strong term. More like a carefully guarded and warded prison.

But Navarre, the elf boy who hadn't fallen under Lenira's spell, was kept in a cage in the middle of the tunnel. Far away so that no one could hear him. But as Crispin carried Gwen past him, he acted. Navarre reached out, touching her bare ankle as they passed. Fortunately they didn't notice.

Navarre's magic was... special, to say the least. It was the reason Lenira had grabbed him in the first place. Lenira specialized in mind magic, but Navarre's magic was more gentle, more healing. If he went down the path Lenira had gone down, he could control minds like her, but he didn't. He could heal, comfort, and connect to the emotions of a person. Empathic magic.

And a touch was all he needed. Instantly he found her mind and connected to it, and was amazed. He hadn't connected in a long time, but Gwen's mind was incredibly dense, cloudy. Voices rang all around it, and he could understand why she was unconscious.

He knew her name, from the voices that were calling her. Gently he breathed in, and out, using his connection to ease away the fog, to help her recover. He was doing that for a long time, before the connection was suddenly cut off.

"Oh, my teachings are the poison?" Farkrie raised an eyebrow. "Maybe once-upon-a-time they were, but not anymore. The only person here that hasn't changed is you, Lenira. I have become stronger, but you are still the scheming snake that I remember you being."

Every muscle in her body was taunt, ready for an attack at any moment. If she reacted fast enough, she may be able to disable the children, but Lenira was a different story.

((Because you're an elf, you can hear the whispers.))

Lenira was about to respond, but one of her daughters, Tyrinia, rushed forward, whispering in her ear. "The new girl's awake." Lenira nodded and the girl bowed, rushing back out again.

Lenira turned back to Farkrie. "I have some business to attend to. My children, escort Farkrie to the city, and make sure she doesn't return. She's not welcome here, not anymore."

As if they were all connected, they all bowed simultaneously, and two of the older boys went to grab Farkrie's arms. Lenira walked towards the main manor, and before going in watched Farkrie. The elf was right; she had grown stronger. But not strong enough. There was no one with magic quite like Crispin and Gwen's, and with both of them under her power, Lenira could finally set her plans into action.

Farkrie sidestepped the older boys, a scowl etched onto her face. She drew her sword, reluctantly. She didn't want to hurt these innocent children, but she really didn't have a choice. If she couldn't get to Lenira, then Gwen would be hurt and these children would be enslaved forever.

"Mother!" One of the girls, barely ten years old, went to her. She was clearly underneath the spell. "She's going to hurt you!"

Lenira laughed, but to those not under the spell it sounded like a cackle. "Oh, don't worry, child. Nothing can hurt me."

With a last look in Farkrie's eyes, she let that statement sink in. Nothing can hurt me.

The doors opened, and Lenira headed inside, the doors closing again as soon as she was within.

The boys glanced at each other, and grabbed Farkrie again, this time holding her more tightly. "You're leaving. Mother said so."

And with that they tried to drag her off the property.

Farkrie slammed her hilt into the back of the head of one boy, knocking him out. She whirled around and did the same to the other, turning to see if anymore attacks were coming.

The first boy went down, but these children were more than prepared to handle her.

Or so they thought.

One of the girls spun her fists. Energy appeared between them, and four other children did the same, shooting them at Farkrie. The other kids launched themselves at Farkrie, beating upon her with their tiny fists. It was a lot of little attacks all at once.

((Okay. Be back in an hour or so.))

Farkrie swung her sword, slashing the faces of the children, effectively blinding them with their own blood. She winced as she did so.

The screams of her children didn't reach Lenira's ears, for she was busy.

Gwen was standing, her arms crossed, defiant. When Lenira entered the room, she frowned, and made her stare icy cold.

"I don't like you. I don't know what you did, but I didn't like it."

Lenira just smiled. "My my. I only healed your rib cage. The other side effects, well, they can be quite cloudy on the mind. There might be some other side effects, do you want me to--"

"No! Just let me go, I can take care of myself."

Lenira did not like to be interrupted. She moved fast, and Gwen recoiled, going to the back corner. Lenira waved her hand, and the boys grabbed Gwen and hauled her forward. Gwen struggled, and kicked out. She didn't like not being able to cast her magic. She'd come to rely on it way too much in the past year.

"Get her outside. This room has my best wards on it."

Outside? Yes! Gwen thought, but it wasn't what she thought it would be. She was dragged out into a throne room of some sort. The room she had been in was one of the many doors along both walls. At the head of the room was a large throne, hence why Gwen called in a throne. Lenira stood before her, looking very much like an evil queen.

She touched her cheek, and this time, Gwen fought. She didn't know what the cloudiness was, only that she didn't want it.

Lenira though, forced it on her. And the more she forced, the more it hurt.

"Gwen, Gwen," Lenira tsked. "I will get through. You need me."

Gwen fell to her knees, like a hot knife was burrowing in her skull. She groaned, and wanted to just give up. But that voice, that voice from before. It was so kind, and now it was strong. Urgent, but calm.

I'm getting help. Stay strong.

Gwen cried out, resisting, but she couldn't for long. The cloudiness returned, and Gwen sank into the evil voice that was binding her to her will.

Navarre knew that Gwen wouldn't be able to withstand another attack. But he also knew that he couldn't do much where he was. He sent a message to Farkrie, exactly how to get to Gwen, and to stop Lenira. Before it was too late.

He knew Farkrie wouldn't remember him. How could she? He was three when it happened. But she would know what to do with the information. He just hoped she got there in time. It would take her a few minutes, running, to get to the throne room. Be quick, please. She can't take another one.

Farkrie felt a brush against her mind and she almost threw her wards up before she realized she faintly recognized the presence. The other person gave her instructions on how to find Gwen, and told her to hurry. She didn't need to be told twice. She found a passageway into the tunnels and ran down then, sprinting at full speed, which for an elf, was fairly fast. It only took her a little while to reach the throne room, but it felt like forever. She burst through the doors and quickly analyzed the situation. Gwen was on the floor, Lenira was standing over her, and multiplechildren were spread across the room.

The children all were itching to attack, that much was clear to anyone looking. Lenira let go of Gwen, and she fell on the floor, her eyes wide open.

"I thought I told my children to escort you off my property. No matter, as it's too late for you. I estimate that when Gwen awakes, she will be as eager to please me as these children are to kill you."

Farkrie held out the bloody sword. "I do hope that when I kill you the spell you have placed over them breaks. I'd hate to have to break it myself, one by one." She raises an eyebrow. "Let's find out, shall we?"

Lenira laughed, and it wasn't a pleasant sound. "And you hope to do that how? Perhaps I'll just kill this girl now. I do have many wonderful children already."

Casually she took a knife from a boy standing near her, and held it's open above Gwen's chest. "No matter how quickly you move, you won't save her in time. Why waste the effort?"

With her other hand she gestured for them to go to her, and one of the older girls twisted in the air, casting a firey blast in Farkrie direction. She was the only one to attack, however. It was as if the others were waiting in line.

Farkrie held up a hand and the fire congealed into a ball and reversed directions, heading straight for Lenira.

Navarre didn't know why he was helping. Probably because he was tired of Lenira always getting her way. And he had actually got a connection with Gwen, which hadn't happened for a few years.

But he was fighting in his mind, looking for her in hers. It was incredibly foggy, and dense with haunting music and Lenira's voice, repeating the brain washing words. "GWEN!" He yelled, running to and fro. If he didn't find her soon... The fog wouldn't ever clear up.

Gwen! Where are you?

The girl jumped, grabbing the fire magic out of the air and like a ping pong board sent it back to Farkrie, adding strength to the fire magic.

Farkrie twisted her hand and and the fire dissipated in the air. She had no idea how she would get to Gwen in time, without hurting these children.

Growling the girl swung her arms, and caused a fire blanket, a flat fire spell that caused all of the children to either duck or run from the room. Two little boys, twins, didn't go anywhere in time and got burned, badly.

Lenira though, didn't stop her. She simply broke the necks of the burned twins from across the room, and brushed their deaths off like they were nothing. Now the only people in the room were the fire witch, Lenira, Gwen and Farkrie.

"You're outmatched, Farkrie," Lenira reminded her. "Even if you were to kill Celeste, Gwen will be underneath my spell for far too long. Give in now, and I won't torture you for killing my children."
