Maeve Hightower

full name: maeve hightower (nรฉe
aguilar)
age: 30
ethnicity:
dominican
birthplace: seville,
spain
sexuality:
lesbian
pronouns: she/
her
magical ability: telepathically communicates
with animals

personality

Maeve is a pretty reserved person. She calculates her moves carefully and avoids rash decisions, knowing that acting on impulse will only lead to harm. She comes across as disinterested in friendship or getting to know people, presenting as cold and sarcastic. Mainly, she does this to protect herself from getting hurt emotionally. She used to be a bit of a pushover in her youth, eager to please her parents, but that only lead her down a path of unhappiness so she's decided to stand up for herself from now on. She's typically a very honest person, not afraid to tell it like it is. However, she is great a lying if she chooses to do so. If someone doesn't mean anything to her, and not many people mean anything to her, she won't hesitate to stab them in the back or double cross them. Typically when she is being friendly with someone she is doing so with a specific goal in mind and isn't being too genuine about it.
She feels as though she can only count on herself for survival and doesn't trust easily. In the extremely rare case she does trust you she will be an extremely loyal, valuable ally, but getting Maeve to trust you takes effort and time. Even after a person has her trust, she'll still be careful around them and be observant over their words and actions, trying to make sure she's aware of any ulterior motives. While she harbors some very defensive tendencies, they're just that- defensive. Deep down Maeve is quite kind and doesn't truly want to harm anyone, she just thinks it's more important to ensure that she doesn't get hurt herself.
likes: animals (especially horses), quiet, silver jewelry, warm weather, grass, the smell of old books
dislikes: loudmouths, enclosed spaces, long dresses, oranges, snow, eating animals (she's a vegetarian)
fears: being trapped
ambitions: to be independent and free, only reliant on herself

history

(CW- mentions of forced marriage and faking of death)
Maeve Aguilar was born in Seville, Spain to Anabel and Lucas Aguilar. Lucas was a diplomat from the Dominican Republic, who had been living in Spain to maintain peaceful relations. Her family was appearance obsessed, and Maeve always felt pressure to be the perfect daughter for her parents. She indulged them by becoming a respectable girl, intelligent with good manners. She was uptight, never letting the facade falter. The only time she felt truly at peace was when she was horseback riding. It was an activity acceptable to her parents, and she felt a sense of belonging when interacting with these creatures- they even kept her company. Something she discovered was that she was capable of communicating with animals telepathically. When she was younger she thought this was a figment of her imagination, but she how the animals behaved when she communicated with them- doing as she asked and such- confirmed that it was very real. She always felt more fond of animals than she was of people, particularly her family's horses. As a girl, she took to learning acrobatic tricks upon horseback as a party trick and excuse to spend time out in the stables. Her parent's showcased their daughters talent at events, similar to how people would play piano or sing at gatherings, Maeve would entertain guests with her impressive horse tricks.
Maeve always felt suffocated in her life, rather the life her parents wanted her to live, but things took an even more dire turn when her parents informed her that she would be wed to Sir Arthur Huntington. Sir Arthur was a British Lord nearly 15 years her senior, she was only 18 when this declaration was made. She'd learned that her parents wanted to aid in getting more connections within England and that they were getting quite a bit of money out of this deal. It was horrifying, and she had no idea how to get out of it. She was too afraid to run away, but had too much self respect to go through with this marriage. Her answer to this problem cam in the form of Sir Marcus Hightower. Surprising enough, she met Marcus at her own engagement party. He was a very wealthy heir about the same age as her. He found her outside in the gardens, crying. They spent the whole night talking about Maeve's problem and then got to know each other. While clearly not a romantic match, they got along really well and became fast friends. The next day, Marcus approached Maeve's parents with a deal. He offered them double the amount of money that Sir Arthur was offering them so he could marry Maeve instead. They accepted, wanting nothing more than a good deal for themselves and for their family's image to look good, not really caring where their daughter ended up. This led to the girl's lack of trust in people in general, knowing that even those closest to her were willing to sell her over to a stranger for quick money. Maeve was so thankful to Marcus though, who made it clear that he expected nothing out of her during this marriage, all they had to do was keep up appearances for their families. Still, she became a colder woman than she was in her childhood, scared of being trapped in an unfortunate situation. Still, she could always count on the stables. After moving to Marcus' oceanside hometown in England, he had given her three horses to keep as her own and she spent much of her time caring for them and working on her horse tricks. They became some of her most trusted friends, she could always count on them for an escape. Years went by, and it became apparent that while she was relatively safe, this was no life to live. Maeve knew Marcus deserved real love, not a marriage of friendship, and she desperately wanted to break free from the perfect standard she had set for herself. So, they devised a plan. The circus that had came to town gave Maeve an idea. She went in and auditioned to be talent and perform there with her horse tricks, demonstrating her dramatic acrobatic talents upon horseback. Those who witnessed her audition would note that she was a woman of few words who seemed emotionally distant, but had great showmanship and a taste for the dramatic. Once she was accepted as talent, she knew she had somewhere to flee to so she faked her death. Marcus was able to successfully feign distress and claim that she'd accidentally fallen off the pier and was lost to the ocean. With that, Maeve amicably parted ways with her husband as the late Lady Hightower, running off with her horses to the circus to perform and never be seen again by family or friends. This was about five years ago, since then she built up her act in the circus as the Silver Rider, performing tricks upon horseback for patrons to enjoy.
