Old soul
Harry Potter, Dumbledore, Hermione Weasley - those people all have one thing in common, and that is that they have been dead for so that long the only place they exist is in textbooks and memory.

The world has changed drastically since their time. First, the divide between the muggle world and wizarding world was nearly eradicated in 2045 due to an influx in muggle-wizard children. However, with this intermingling came what pure-blood families had long feared would come to pass, a dilution of wizard-blood potent enough to nearly wipe out the 'superior' wizard race.

Although in this day and age it's hard to find anyone without even a droplet of wizard blood in them, to find a true wizard - someone capable of more feats then the common folk could dream of, someone strong enough to direct their power through one of those archaic 'wands' of old days past - that's a feat in itself.

It's not rare now too see people practicing what little bits of power they possess in public, from putting a glow to their hands, to floating a couple of feet off the ground. Magic is celebrated now as it has never has been before.

But as much as it is celebrated by muggles and purebloods alike, the two still exist in two entirely different worlds. The muggle world holds only people with a touch of magic (not potent enough to do much besides party tricks). And the wizarding world's doors are closed, holding and obscuring from sight the few wizards that remain.

Fortunately - or perhaps unfortunately enough for you, depending on your circumstances - you are one amongst the minority.

Whether you are a member of a pureblood family whose insistence upon keeping it in the blood has resulted in enough magic (and inbreeding) to last centuries, a muggle-born lucky enough to be born with gifts none around you understand, or someone with a different story entirely, you have received a letter of invitation to Hogwarts. The wizarding world's doors open, hopefully, to you.

The Wizarding World
The year is 2070 - twenty-five years after the Muggle and Wizarding worlds briefly "merged" with the influx of the Muggle-born wizarding population, and the wizarding world has shrunk considerably, though this wasn't just an overnight change.

It's been a gradual downward shift in numbers over time, and now it has sunk so low that there's talk of wizards dying out completely. The muggle world and the wizards that are steadily emerging from it are virtually this world's last hope. That is an inadmissible fact that few have really grasped the meaning of. But it is hard to ignore now, with pureblood families dying out left and right. The wizard world is slowly shifting - half-blood's and "mud-blood's" are becoming the majority, not that anyone would know it as the positions of power are still occupied by a pure-blood, arguably decrepit majority.

Wizarding policy is mainly traditionalist as well as deceptively simple these days - keep the muggles out and keep the wizards in. It's virtually a containment policy, and receiving a permit for business or even travel outside of the wizarding world is practically impossible without friends in high places. Muggle items have to be smuggled in now more then ever, and wizarding opinions of muggle-borns are at an all time low.

The Muggle World
The year is 2070, but the Muggle-world (as wizards still refer to it) is thirty-years behind the pace it should be technologically.

This is due in part to a nuclear missile experiment gone awry in 2020, in which the wizarding-world famously and publicly (as the incident was broadcast world-wide) intervened, involuntarily placing themselves in a position to be viewed as the Muggle-World's own personal super heroes. The other reason is undoubtedly the main resultant of that particular incident - the world's new-found fascination with all things magic and an abrupt shift from all things scientific.

Magic, wands, Harry Potter - What little Muggles are now aware of the world that for so long was fully obscured from their gaze is now is a world-wide phenomenon, captivating the imaginations of children and adults alike. It helps that many now carry diluted versions of the wizard gene, although it doesn't enable them to do much more then sometimes only subtle little party tricks. Regardless of how wide-spread magic ability is, it is rare for a muggle to see or even meet an actual wizard in their lifetime. But that doesn't stop the whispers of "wizards" from emerging on every street corner.
