Community [Isekai Hell] January 2024 Community Event - Overkill

It was late afternoon. The sky was starting to be become dark and the sun was preparing its slumber in the horizon. The city, however, refused to sleep. In a big city like this, the amount of activity wouldn't be changed much by the cycle of the sky, its just changed what types of activity would be more prominent. People came back home from their field and fills the tavern, some stores close and the others open and pets returned back to their owner's house while the strays keep roaming the street. Somewhere in a shady alleyway, a rat had managed to find a treasure from nearby dumpster, a big block of cheese. It planned to brought it back to its den and feeds its family. Unknown to the rat, just a few feet away from its location was a hungry black cat shrouded in shadow. The cat had been eating nothing but those crunchy biscuit-like pet foods for the last few days and was now hungry for a fresh bloody meat.

The cat had been stalking that particular alleyway and scattered several foods to lure some preys. Above the alleyway, perching on a thin strand of clothesline were several crows looking attentively at the alley below them. They knew the location of the foods the cat had put, but they also knew that the cat would pounce at them if they dare to take it, so they did the clever thing and wait until someone else took the bait and then take their spoils once the cat was distracted. At least that's what they're planning.

As the rat dragged the cheese across the alleyway, it felts a sudden sense of danger as its nose picked up a particular smell along the way. The smell of cat and bloodlust. In a split second, the rat dropped the cheese and jumped backward right before a quadrupedal figure landed on the spot it was in. The rat didn't waste any time before it turned its direction and ran as fast as it could, the cat let out a frustrated growl as she eyed the rat. She wanted to chase the rat but there's another ruckus behind her and when she turned her back she saw the crows haphazardly plucked the other hidden baits she was prepared.

"Hey! Stop!" The cat lunged at the nearest crow, but the bird quickly took off into the sky, making the cat crashed into a pile of garbage on the ground. The crows vanished into night sky and the at couldn't do anything beside letting out her frustration by yelling.

"I have enough of this!" Eeriel was never a good hunter. Firstly, she used to be a human before getting reincarnated here, and secondly, she had always been taken are of by someone else, whether it her now dead master or other kind strangers. She didn't have any experience doing a proper hunt as a cat, even if she had all the physical capabilities for it. The reason why she want to start hunting by herself? She want to be independent. Getting fed by people was nice and all, but she was sure there would be time in the future where she wouldn't be able to rely on other people. For that probable scenario, she needs to at least be able to hunt by herself like a proper cat...

Like a proper cat...? Why? She had been aware for quite a while that her psyche had become less human and more cat as the time goes by, but it seemed that she unknowingly also desire to acts more like a cat now. She's scared. She didn't want to fully turn into a cat.

Shaking her sudden identity crisis away, she figured that if she wanted to keep her humanity as much as possible then she should at least try to do things as if she was human. What would a human do to catch rats? Set up a mousetrap, set the house on fire, use poison, train a cat? Nah, none of those thing she would be able to do with what she has right now. She didn't have the right limbs to set off such complex devices. She did have another thing though, something that she learn during her time with the NEET wizard in his tower: magic.

The problem with her magic was so far she had only managed to do it at such a short range the rats would probably notice her chant if she do it next to them. She needs to learn to do magic without incantation like her master. That, or cast her spells from further range the rats wouldn't even notice her presence. After some thinking she decided to go with the second option.

Thus her training began. Eeriel would repeatedly shoot at targets with her magic. Gradually she would put the target a bit further and force herself to strain her magic further. Days and weeks passed. The range of her magic had been improved for a considerable distance. She prepared for another hunting session.

It was late afternoon. The sky was starting to be become dark and the sun was preparing its slumber in the horizon. The city, however, refused to sleep. Somewhere in a shady alleyway, a rat pulled a big block of cheese from a dumpster. Unknown to the rat, a predator had been eyeing its movement. This time though, Eeriel didn't stalk from a nearby shadow. Instead she was sitting in a relaxed loafing position on one of the rooftop, roughly 100 feet away from the rat. This way not only her prey wouldn't notice her, but she also gains a good vantage point to observe a wider area. Focusing on the rat, Eeriel chanted her magic and shoot a bolt of pure mana towards her target. The rats didn't have enough time to react before the bolt blast its body into pieces.

"Huh... Did I... really did it?" Eeriel's eyes widen in disbelief. She really managed to hunt something by herself. Granted, sniping rat with magic was definitely something a regular cat wouldn't do but that's make it even better. It's a method that would hopefully tether her humanity and keep reminding her of who she really was. Though, now that she looks at the splattered blood and flesh on the ground, its probably an overkill.
